Saudi Arabia's murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi; Belarus' hijacking of a plane to arrest opposition journalist Roman Protasevich; and Rwanda's forceful rendition of “Hotel Rwanda” hero Paul Rusesabagina are some of the most well-known examples of transnational repression by authoritarian regimes. They are part of a larger trend of regimes aggressively reaching across the globe to silence or intimidate dissidents in exile. This panel discussion, recorded at the 2022 Oslo Freedom Forum, examines the practice of transnational repression, mainly as it targets independent journalists. Featured Guests: Megha Rajagopalan: Investigative journalist Rushan Abbas: Executive director of Campaign for Uyghurs Masih Alinejad: Iranian journalist and activist Can Dündar: Turkish journalist and documentarian

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded August 20th, 2022 Colombia inaugurated Gustavo Petro earlier this month. The election was close fought, the results indicating a near even divide between the Pacto Histórico candidate and his right-wing opposition, who split the vote between them, allowing Petro's victory. But, whether loved or loathed what's certain is, Colombia's first ever leftist president has made history, and could bring "historic change" to South America's most troubled nation. At least so says my first guest, who's recently returned from attending the August 7th inauguration ceremonies in Bogota. Dan Kovalik is a lawyer, educator, labour, peace, and justice activist, democracy defender, journalist, author, and filmmaker. Dan's observed elections in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Colombia – where he witnessed the 2016 peace plebiscite promising an end to the generational war there. Kovalik's book titles include: ‘Cancel This Book: The Progressive Case Against Cancel Culture,' the "Plot to" series on American efforts to undermine the governments and economies of Iran, Venezuela, Russia, (and to control the World entirely) and his latest is, ‘No More War: How the West Violates International Law by Using ‘Humanitarian' Intervention to Advance Economic and Strategic Interest.' His recent article, 'Colombia's First Leftist President Will Bring Historic Change, If the US Lets Him' is a sign post at Colombia's political crossroad. Dan Kovalik in the first half. And; it's no surprise Canada's foreign policy is aligned with the United States on Ukraine, Russia, Iran, China, and Latin America; successive federal governments have always got along by going along with our behemoth neigbour south, but it would shock many Canadians to learn the degree to which their political system has been infiltrated, and the mechanisms used to deliver the nation's decision-making into foreign hands. Aidan Jonah is the Editor-in-Chief of The Canada Files, a socialist, anti-imperialist news site covering Canadian imperialism, federal politics, and left-wing resistance to colonialism across the world. Jonah has broken numerous stories, including how the Canadian Armed Forces trained neo-Nazi "journalist" Roman Protasevich while he was with the Azov Battalion, and how a CIA front group funded the group which drove the so-called "Uyghur genocide" vote in parliament. Aidan Jonah and just when did the CIA start pulling Canada's strings? in the second half. But first, Dan Kovalik and Colombia's gamble on sovereignty with leftist, Gustavo Petro. British and Irish airlines are some of the safest in the world but the case of Ryanair flight 4798 shows that it's not just crashes that airlines need to remain vigilant over when looking at safety.Ryanair flight FR4978 was travelling from the Greek capital, Athens, to Vilnius in Lithuania on Sunday 23 May when it made an abrupt change of course over Belarus, some 10km (six miles) from the Lithuanian border. According to an unverified transcript from the Belarusian transport ministry, air traffic controllers told the pilot at 09:30 GMT "you have [a] bomb on board and it can be activated over Vilnius". Even though the plane was closer to Vilnius than Minsk, the pilot was told to divert to the Belarusian capital. At 09:47 the pilot declared an emergency. As the plane landed witnesses said Roman Protasevich, an opposition Belarusian journalist, was "super scared", and one quoted him as saying "I'll get the death penalty here". He had been charged in absentia with inciting mass protests, but Belarus's KGB security agency also placed him on a list of "individuals involved in terrorist activity". When the plane's 126 passengers disembarked, police arrested Mr Protasevich and Sofia Sapega, a Russian citizen studying in Lithuania. Three other passengers were listed as remaining in Minsk. The other passengers were allowed on to the plane, which flew on to Vilnius around seven hours later. And even now, aviation advisors and safety boards are not fully sure what happened.Of course this podcast is completely free, as is my weekly travel email.

The two sides were already at odds over Lukashenko's victory in last year's presidential election, which was widely deemed fraudulent and which triggered huge protests against his 27-year rule. EU penalties over the vote — and the crackdown on demonstrators that ensued — were criticized as toothless, but the plane incident sparked measures targeting Belarus' aviation sector and, more recently, its key industries. The tensions have left Lukashenko reliant on Russia's Vladimir Putin for support. Lukashenko threatened in a speech in May to send drugs and illegal migrants into the EU unchecked, with Lithuania a prime target as it has become a temporary home for the president's political rivals. The number of undocumented immigrants — mostly from Iraq — crossing from Belarus jumped to 822 through July 2 this year from 81 in the whole of 2020. A still image obtained by Reuters shows a flight path of Ryanair FR4978 on May 23 on its way from Athens, Greece to Lithuanian capital Vilnius and diverted to Minsk, Belarus when flying over the country. Citing a “bomb threat,” Belarusian flight controllers ordered the jet to land in Minsk, where authorities arrested Roman Protasevich, a dissident journalist who was on board. Sharing a 679-kilometer border, the Lithuania-Belarus tensions reflect the struggles between EU and Russia — the great powers behind them. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/07/12/2003760685

There were widespread reports of beatings, torture and the inhumane treatment of prisoners – those on the outside faced intimidation and the prospect of losing their jobs. The latest news from Belarus that shocked the world was the dramatic abduction of journalist Roman Protasevich, whose Ryanair flight was force-landed in Minsk, creating an international scandal. The crackdown on dissent and reporting in Belarus goes on, and its authorities are keen to present their version of events to the world. At a recent press conference in Minsk, Jonah Fisher was presented with a dilemma when detained blogger and protester Roman Protasevich was brought out to speak to assembled journalists and diplomats. High in the Himalayas, Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries, with a weak and under-funded health system, particularly in rural areas. Rajini Vaidyanathan travelled there to report on the impact the pandemic is having on families across the country. Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was one of the most infamous drug cartel heads in Mexico for years - though he's ended up jailed for life in a supermax prison in the USA. Tara McKelvey covered his trial in New York in 2019, where she saw one of his former mistresses give dramatic testimony - and met his wife in the courthouse cafeteria. Two years on, the two women's fortunes have very much reversed. Bukhara is one of the most renowned of the ancient cities along the ancient Silk Road linking China and the West - a storied place with millennia of artistic and intellectual history embedded in its mosques, madrasas and mausoleums. Sara Wheeler chose a more intimate kind of building to get a feel of its history. And Andrew Harding recalls moments on the road across Africa - from Libya to Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire to Zimbabwe - when it took a team to get the job done. While the joke goes that reporters get the credit and camera operators get the fun, what is the producer's lot? Some of them - like his colleague Becky Lipscombe, now leaving the BBC - really can make all the difference. Producer: Polly Hope

He also discusses the strange case of the Belarussian anti-government activist, Roman Protasevich, who prophesized his own capture by government forces in a dream. The episode ends rebutting science guy, Neil deGrasse Tyson's latest attack on the hypothesis that UFOs are extraterrestrials, in an article that recently appeared on CNN.com.

In late May, Belarus forced a Ryanair plane to land in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. The plane was flying from Greece to Lithuania, but was in Belarusian airspace. Local forces cited a “bomb threat” as the reason for the stop. After hours in Minsk, officials arrested two passengers: Roman Protasevich, an exiled Belarusian journalist, and his girlfriend. After not being seen for weeks, Protasevich has reemerged on Belarusian state TV. Once an outspoken critic of the Belarusian regime, he changed his rhetoric. He apologized and said that Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus' dictator, is the valid leader. Many humans rights groups however found that Protasevich appeared to have been tortured and was being forced to make this statement. In this episode, Drew and Alex look into how shocking it is that a private airline can just be forced down a man can be taken, no questions asked. They can only imagine what ideas this is giving the world's dictators. Drew and Alex also talk about Belarus and its close ties to Russia. Alex Lukashenko, has met with Putin since the incident and seems emboldened by their alliance. Lukashenko doesn't believe in fair elections, especially after stealing an election last summer. The entrenched dictator is considered Europe's last dictator and he is also somewhat of a remnant of the Soviet era, the anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917 is still a national holiday, and he controls state owned factories and companies. The US and Europe face a serious dilemma with Belarus. Do they punish Russia? Sanction Belarus? Or isolate the country?

We also look at shootings that occurred over the holiday weekend, and how a seven-year-old boy managed to save his family by swimming for an hour. Then getting to the heart of the discussion, while U.S. politicians continue to press for investigations into the possible origin of COVID-19 at a virology lab in Wuhan, China, some scientists have raised objections to variations of the lab theory. We look at these theories and weigh the possibilities in terms of what scientists have had to say about the matter in recent days. Alexander Mercouris, editor-in-chief at theduran.com & host of "The Duran'' on YouTube, joins us to discuss "Spygate 2." Reports that the US National Security Agency enlisted the aid of Denmark's intelligence services to spy on German Chancellor Angela Merkel and potentially other European leaders is causing an uproar amongst US vassal states in Europe. Meanwhile, many observers are yawning at the reality that these nations have generally accepted their status as powerless clients of the US empire and are unlikely to do more than complain.Levi Rickert, editor and publisher of NativeNewsOnline.net, joins us to discuss the genocide against indegenous people in Canada. The bodies of over 200 children were found in Canada at a building that was used to strip them of their culture and indoctrinate them into European culture. Observers are using this as an opportunity to revisit the genocide and violence associated with Western imperialism. Mark Sleboda, Moscow-based international relations security analyst, joins us to discuss Belarus. The President of Belarus is talking about the Western attempt to overthrow his government, and is joining a chorus of international voices warning that NATO and the US empire are rapidly dragging the planet towards a third and potentially final world war. Also, Roman Protasevich, the man who was arrested in Belarus from a RyanAIr plane last week was wanted in connection with Ukrainian Nazi operatives, according to Russian foreign policy sources.Greg Palast, investigative reporter, joins us to discuss election issues in the US. A major political struggle has erupted in Texas as GOP politicians introduce a restrictive voting bill and Democrats walk out to halt the process. Also, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) argues that the Democrats must show equal resolve to push through legislation that the GOP opposes.Daniel Lazare, investigative journalist and author of "The Velvet Coup," joins us to discuss Israel. The landscape is shifting, as Washington, DC produced over 35,000 people at a rally on a rainy cold Memorial Day weekend. The leaders of the Democratic party are struggling to deal with a large group of major donors who support the Netanyahu Likud regime, while facing growing opposition in their major voting blocs.Ajamu Baraka, former VP Candidate for the Green Party, joins us to discuss Columbia and Brazil. Brazil is facing a major internal crisis, as the citizens are taking to the streets in large numbers to protest the neoliberal policies of Jair Bolsanaro. Bolsonaro and his US supporters are particularly concerned as the former left leaning leader Lula De Silva seems ready to make a comeback. Also, we discuss how Israel is influencing far-right wing politics in South America, and in particular, the US controlled government of Colombia. Margaret Kimberley, editor and senior columnist at Black Agenda Report and author of "Prejudential: Black America and the Presidents," joins us to discuss the militarism of the US empire. We discuss Caitlin Johnstone's article in which she pushes back against war propaganda and explains her concept of US foreign policy. Also, we talk about Jim Bovard's article about the run up to the invasion and occupation of Iraq.Laith Marouf, broadcaster and journalist based in Beirut, Lebanon, joins us to discuss Syria. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad won the Syrian election with 95.1% of the vote. As is normally the case with perceived adversaries, the US condemned the election as illegitimate before the voting process began. Also, does the end of the Syrian war mean that the war torn nation can return to its status as a power player in the region?
