Episode Notes This week finds Lorraine, Will and three non-descript second-row band members pretending to harmonise, singing a soppy ballad to a group of kids in a school gym before being bundled into a van for two more shows that day. Our heroes review new Netflix documentary, Dirty Pop, and find out the sordid story behind the backs of The Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. Who will turn out to be the Harry Styles of Pop Filter? One look at this weeks episode photo on Facebook will answer that question. Next up, Will goes to the parallel bars while Lorraine takes a run towards the vault and hopes her case of The Twisties is behind her as they give their thoughts on Netflix documentary mini-series, Simone Biles Rising. Will soon finds it more difficult than he anticipated to actually get onto the parallel bars, while Lorraine's case of The Twisties kicks in well before the actual vault, resulting in a spectacular fall and ten severely stubbed toes. Simone Biles became the Olympic All Around champion for a second time in Paris yesterday. In doing so, she defeated her rivals, seemingly conquered gravity on some elements, and put to rest certain 'demons' from Tokyo 2021. Back then, she withdrew from competition citing a case of "the twisties". But what are the twisties? Often described as equivalent to the "yips" that affect golfers, the twisties can affect athletes in skill movement sports, effectively costing them the ability to know where their bodies are in space. To explore this phenomenon, and understand how athletes overcome it, we are joined by Prof Dave Collins, a performance psychologist with 40 years' experience in elite sport. Prof Collins has worked with 90 elite athletes, many in sports where the dreaded twisties can strike, such as freestyle skiing, BMX, snowboarding and gymnastics. He explains the differences between the yips and the twisties, and offers insights into they are conquered.Show notesHere's where you go to sign up for Patron, with a small monthly pledge, which then gives you access to our Discourse forum where other listeners share their thoughts and responses to these issuesGuest Prof Dave Collins' website Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Marko has come in annoyed with an old lady at his gym, he reckons everyone there is also annoyed with her as she does something at the gym that Marko thinks is inappropriate. Ox discusses Botox, he's decided to never get it. And he is not a fan of tattoos. We find that Ox has a medical condition. He explains what's going on, there's a fair bit. The big fella is falling apart! He's been squirting stuff up his nose to help with one of his conditions, and he's decided he loves it. And Ox then starts telling us how much he enjoys sneezing. Strange. The hotline rings, and it's Joe from Mernda in Victoria who has a comment on the supermarket grape saga. Joe's a delivery driver and Ox reckons delivery drivers know a thing or two about pinching stuff….Joe denies this, and he seems like a good unit so we believe him. We have an update on the spring roll situation in 13th Beach Golf Course. Ox has a few more tweaks he's keen to see at the club. He decides to try and get the new boss on the pod to run through his list of requirements. Ox is annoyed with supermarkets, not for the reasons you might expect.Back into the statman segment with The Ox. Will Marko be happy with his stat today? It's a bit inappropriate and we're not convinced at all that it is a stat, it feels more like a fact.We toss around ideas on the ‘homework' from last week: what is a question you could ask someone and if they were honest, their answer would tell you if they are a good person or not. We hear a bunch of your questions, and we give some of ours.Ox has been off Twisties for some time, he admits that he has fallen off the wagon because he has been stressed. On food, specifically soup: Ox has a recipe that he reckons is a ripper, and he's making some soup to bring to his local golf club for the boys. It's what he calls an ‘oxymoron' soup. Both Ox and Marko watched the Head of the Secret Service get grilled by a politician in the US, and decide to play the exchange…it was intense, worth listening through the whole thing. Thanks to the team at the E&S Trading Clearance Centre in Clayton, Melbourne on Dandenong Road - right opposite Ikea. Fun pod today. Marko has brought in what he calls the Tom Brady of snacks - a new Twisties combo which combines chicken and cheese. The Ox challenges Marko's statement that Tom Brady is the greatest sportsperson in history, by tossing up Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Disagreement ensues. On Tom Brady, The Ox has watched the roast and loved it. He explains to Marko what happened. Ox and Marko don't know why we're not doing roasts in Australia, and they list a bunch of Aussie names who should be roasted. Marko reckons we need to develop the Couple of Blokes roast TV show. The boys reckon there is one person in the world who should be roasted, and that is Trump. Ox reckons Trump is home and hosed for the election, Third Man disagrees but thinks it's tight. Marko is unsure. Whilst we avoid politics on the pod, Marko restates his hatred of councils. We discuss signs you're getting old. Ox makes the comment that his hearing is 'off the charts' good, and maybe getting better. Markos hearing isn't great. Marko wants to borrow Ox's ear cleaner thing, Ox disagrees saying that you can't share stuff like that.Has Marko had Botox? We discuss Marko's beauty routines. Ox is a fan of cucumbers on the eyes. Speaking of skin regimes, one of Ox's mates has had a very, very nasty accident involving a certain part of his body. He won't give his mate's name, but he does show a pic. It is horrific. Leads to a conversation about 'ball bags'. We need to know if we should share the photo, if you want to see it, let us know in our Twitter poll (hot tip - you don't want to see it).On the subject of Ox's mate, we discuss why some kids TV show characters didn't wear pants. Seems weird. And how did this get through the ABC TV censors?Ox the Statman is back, this week with a stat on Tiger Woods, delivered by Marko who has taken over the segment. It's a bit more complex than previous stats, but a good one.Marko has been listening to Ox calling the footy on SEN and loving it, Ox has been listening to Daisy Thomas on Triple M calling the footy and is annoyed by his continual use of one specific word - which we find out, from Ox, does not mean what we thought it did! Marko raises a saying that gets said wrong all the time.Ox has seen a new invention that he is annoyed he didn't think of. He explains. It has to do with peeling a specific fruit. Ox comes up with a name and slogan for this invention. Back onto fruit, Markos hatred of fruit comes up. We'll put a poll up on what you want Marko to eat, which Marko describes as a 'jump the shark' moment. Is he the only person who refuses to eat fruit ?Ox has been down to e&s trading and he managed to get an awesome deal in an example of incredible customer service, which is what you get at e&s - he explains on the pod. We're here thanks to the team at the E&S Trading Clearance Centre in Clayton, Melbourne on Dandenong Road - right opposite Ikea. Today on the podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Adam Paterson, Head of Performance at Portsmouth Gymnastics Centre in the UK and MAG Lead England Coach. As an accomplished MAG Coach, MAG International brevet judge, and personal coach to members of the GBR Development squad, Scotland, and England Senior squads, Adam shared his valuable insights on how to develop twisting on the floor exercise. We covered everything from building a strong foundation to overcoming mental blocks and fear.By understanding the individual's challenges and providing a supportive environment, coaches can guide gymnasts toward mastering the art of twisting.Adam also addressed the common issue of the "twisties," a phenomenon where gymnasts experience a mental block and lose their ability to twist safely. Through targeted drills and exercises, gymnasts can improve their proprioception and spatial awareness, allowing them to feel more at ease while executing twists. One of the highlights of our conversation was exploring alternatives for those who may not have access to specialized equipment like trampolines or foam pits. Adam shared creative ideas and drills that can be done in a regular gym setting, making it easier for individuals with limited resources to work on their twisting skills. We discuss:The ingredients of a happy and successful club. The challenges of coaching a younger athlete. Advice and tips!Visual and head position. Coaching the cause, not the effect.Step-by-step process of dealing with the twisties. How growing can affect special awareness of what to look out for and how to manage. How to introduce twisting to gymnastics. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 5, 2023 is: yips YIPS noun Yips is a plural noun that refers to a state of nervousness that affects an athlete (such as a golfer) when they're about to make an important move or play. It is almost always used in the phrase "the yips." // Afflicted with a sudden case of the yips, Doug tensed up and pulled his putt too far to the left. See the entry > Examples: "In his fourth season in Boston, [Daniel] Bard had a 6.22 ERA with 38 strikeouts, 43 walks and eight hit batters in 59⅓ innings. He had the yips, leading to a seven-year hiatus from the big leagues. He bounced around in the minor leagues trying to reclaim control before retiring from baseball in 2017 to become a player mentor and mental skills coach. Bard returned to the pros with the Rockies in 2020 and was named NL Comeback Player of the Year." — Cydney Henderson, USA Today, 31 Mar. 2023 Did you know? When it comes to sports, yips happen. We're not sure who coined yips; we also can't say if this plural noun has anything to do with the singular yip, a word of imitative origin that refers to a dog's sharp bark. What we do know is that the yips have sported their name since at least the 1930s, and that the term first appeared in golf-related contexts. Anxious for similar language? Perhaps you're familiar with twisties, a term popularized in 2021 during the Tokyo Olympic games when gymnastics GOAT Simone Biles suffered from an affliction akin to the yips in which gymnasts experience a mental block causing loss of spatial orientation. Twisties doesn't yet meet our criteria for entry, however, so we'll have to bench it for now.

Having been favored to become the first female gymnast to win back-to-back Olympic all-around gold medals, Simone Biles has put her mental health first today and walked away from the all-around individual competition. Some are saying it's the end of an era...but is it really the start of questioning the amount of pressure we put on elite athletes and beginning to support their mental health?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
From Simone Biles' brush with the twisties to Rick Ankiel's experience of the yips, the constellation of phenomena known as the yips–and the stories of the athletes who experience it–are some of the strangest in the world of sports. Far more common, but perhaps equally opaque, are mood disorders like depression and anxiety, and on this episode of Losing Control, host Justin Su'a talks with Karen Swartz, a clinical psychiatrist who specializes in mood disorders and community education. Mood disorders destabilize confidence, shift the relationship with the things we care about the most, and impact how we see ourselves–just like the yips–and in the second half of the episode, retired Major Leaguer Rick Ankiel reflects on the yips, mental health, and how his experiences in baseball have shaped his relationship to sports, and to life. Rick Ankiel, a retired professional pitcher, outfielder, and author of “The Phenomenon: Pressure, the Yips, and the Pitch that Changed My Life” Karen Swartz, the director of clinical and educational programs at the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center and a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Losing Control is a podcast about the yips. But this episode isn't about the yips. It's about two of the tools athletes and elite performers utilize to maintain a healthy mind: meditation and humor. Dr. Amishi Jha studies meditation and its impact on our attention, stress levels, and performance. Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas study humor, and the power of a mindset of levity. Part of the yips story is about how we live our lives, and on this episode of Losing Control, host Justin Su'a shines a light on a practice and a quality that can have a profound impact on your performance, your work, and your life. Jennifer Aaker, professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and co-author of “Humor, Seriously: Why Humor Is a Secret Weapon in Business and Life” Naomi Bagdonas, lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and co-author of “Humor, Seriously: Why Humor Is a Secret Weapon in Business and Life” Dr. Amishi Jha, professor at the University of Miami and author of “Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Former starting quarterback Joel Stave led the Wisconsin Badgers for 31 wins between 2012 and 2015, and to this day, Stave remains the Badgers' all-time winningest quarterback. But success isn't only about the wins or the completed passes, and in one of the lows–and highs–of his life so far, Stave battled and overcame the yips. And although only some athletes will experience the yips or the twisties, all athletes will confront life after sports. For a perspective on making the transition from a life-permeating identity to whatever comes next, host Justin Su'a talks with Adriana Duffy-Hörling, a former gymnast and current professor of law who competed for Puerto Rico on the world stage. Focus on what you can control. It's a phrase you've heard more than once if you've been listening to this podcast, and it typically refers to reorienting your perspective or ideas of success from the external to the internal: from elements outside of your control, to elements within your control. But on this episode of Losing Control, host Justin Su'a talks with renowned mental performance coach Dr. Colleen Hacker about how to manage, repair, and sustain a critical component of elite performance that is outside of control: confidence. And for a perspective on how to achieve consistent high performance sustainably, bestselling author Brad Stulberg discusses the perils of heroic individualism and the possibilities of other models of success. The yips are one of the most extraordinary and unusual phenomena in sports, and far more common among elite athletes are battles with confidence–or lack thereof–and achieving success sustainably in environments that demand consistent high performance under pressure. Performance anxiety and the yips are not the same thing, and feeling unable to perform or compete before a big event is far more common than actually being unable to perform or compete due to the yips. But these ailments share more than a few similarities, and on this episode of Losing Control, host Justin Su'a talks with a concert pianist who has not only performed on many of the world's great stages, but who has battled–and learned to manage–performance anxiety. And for a perspective on battling severe, debilitating anxiety on the court, you'll hear from none other than Mardy Fish, the former American number one and former world number seven, who faced severe anxiety at the height of his professional tennis career. The yips has been described as a wiring problem in the brain. But what is a wiring problem in the brain? It may be dystonia, a neurological movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle spasms or jerks, and on this episode of Losing Control, host Justin Su'a talks with Dr. Steven Frucht, a neurologist who has been treating people who suffer from movement disorders for decades. And for a broader exploration of how we move, you'll also meet two neuroscientists whose cutting edge work focuses on the neural control of movement, or how the brain controls the body: Dr. Alaa Ahmed and Dr. Lena Ting. The yips is not only present in a sport like gymnastics, which requires an almost unparalleled degree of athleticism, but also in sports like archery and golf, which demand extraordinary mental fitness. In archery, it's known as target panic, and in this episode of Losing Control, we explore the mental game of one of the world's top archers, Paige Pearce, who has battled–and is currently managing–target panic. But it's in golf that the term yips, used to describe an involuntary movement that interrupts a golfer's putt, chip, or swing, is believed to have originated. Arguably, golf is also the sport in which the yips have been the most widely studied, and Justin talks it over with David Owen, who has been writing about golf for decades, and who has spent time with some of the top pros in the game, including none other than Tiger Woods. We've talked about the yips, but what about the twisties? The infamous variety of yips that afflicts aerial athletes, the twisties is a term which describes the experience of athletes who lose their sense of proprioception, or their awareness of where their bodies are in space. It was this unusual malady that led to Simone Biles stepping away from the 2020 Summer Olympics, and although she may be the best known athlete to have battled the twisties, Simone Biles is far from the only athlete who has experienced it. To better understand this strange and dangerous phenomenon, Justin sits down with Aimee Boorman, one of the top gymnastics coaches in the world and the former coach of Simone Biles herself. And for a look at how an athlete contends with the twisties–and triumphs in spite of it–you'll hear from Gary Hunt, one of the best cliff divers in the world and the nine-time Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series Champion. Today the Atlanta Braves' Tyler Matzek is a World Series Champion and one of the top relief pitchers in Major League Baseball. But just a few years ago, Tyler Matzek was ready to walk away from the game, and not because he was ready to retire, but due to a bad case of the yips. Matzek had tried everything he'd heard of to fix his throwing, and nothing was working–nothing, that is, until he met Jason Kuhn, a mental performance coach and fellow yips-sufferer. Matzek's work with Kuhn would be the catalyst that initiated a remarkable comeback, and on this episode of “Losing Control” you'll not only hear how Tyler Matzek got his pitching back, you'll get a behind the scenes look at the process that keeps him at the top of his game.
