Track17

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2023 86:51

[Setlist] - [00:00:00] Intro, Steady + Gast Kristoffer Cornils - [00:04:08] Zuletzt gehört: Isolée, Happy Birthday + Instra:mentals FabricLive - [00:08:24] Was ist last.fm eigentlich?
- [00:52:57] Wieso hat last.fm so sehr an Relevanz verloren? Liegt es an der Kommodifizierung der Musik?
- [00:57:13] Last.fm war 2008 der erste richtige Streamingdienst, bevor es Streamingdienste gab - [01:04:01] last.fm als Vorbild für das Nutzer*innenverhalten heute: Wir tracken Filme, Schritte, Bücher, Essen etc. - [01:10:53] Hätte last.fm seinen Niedergang überhaupt verhindern können? Wer nutz es heute noch? (Wir zum Beispiel)

The strange thing about these pre-records is that technically, this file you're listening to has been "in the bag" since Saturday morning yet somehow Steve's only now gettin' around to uploading it. He's had ample time to get it uploaded yet it's still late in the day. Oh well. This week the mix is "new stuff from Paul and Steve accidentally plays 3 songs that he's heard on TV shows". The latest in my podcast series, investigating the Current State of Music. DJ Format found fame in the earlier noughties and a DJ and producer, bringing out albums like "Music for the Mature B-Boy" bringing a fresh cut and paste approach not really heard from a UK producer. Introding Canadian Born rapper Abdominal, his beats and flow felt more like a West Coast American release. Supporting Jurassic 5 at Brixton opened the door for Formats style and gained him widespread coverage from Radio 1 and beyond. Fabric gave him the opportunity to release a DJ mix as part of their coveted Fabriclive series, bringing to the fore his impeccable DJing skills and bringing longevity to his career. Further albums as himself and with the Simonsound cemented his musicianship, from straight up hip hop, to jazz and beyond. Djing regularly around the world, putting together compilation albums, producing new music, Format never stops in his quest for sonic perfection. His latest project is putting out a release which he hopes can generate some funds for a friend with cancer, which you can find more out here: www.youcaring.com/gisellechamberlain-1054141

Members Athys and Syntopia individually garnered significant respect and experience with their solo projects, but it was through the combination of their brutal but intricate sound design skills that the true power of Hypoxia emerged. Their first single ‘Space Time’ was quickly recognized by DnB Arena head Risky as being a standout track and released it through the ‘DnB Arena Winter Selection’ compilation in 2013. Follow-up single ‘Badass’, released on Titan records, built on that strong start - arriving to equal acclaim and gaining support across the scene from those who know. ‘Badass’ on Titan Recordings was featured on Ed Rush’s ‘Fabriclive 82’ mix and played out by a range of well-respected Djs. Following these standout tracks, label of the moment ‘Eatbrain’ snapped them up – releasing their first full EP ‘Anova’ to an insatiable audience of Neurofunk fans and catapulting Hypoxia deeper into the minds of ravers globally. Their live shows to date have included ‘Tomorrowland’, one of the largest festivals in the world and ‘Rampage’ – Europe’s biggest DnB and Dubstep event, as well as tearing clubs across Europe to pieces. The duo are currently working on new original material, including cross-genre Techno and Electro-influenced sounds and a number of high-profile collaborations. 2016 saw Hypoxia release their follow up ‘Cognition’ EP on Eatbrain, which was received with wide acclaim, as well as playing on the label’s rapidly more-legendary club events. Joining the MethLab roster has cemented their direction towards an uncompromising breed of heavy tech, with their track ‘Exploit’ set for release on the label before the end of the year. An LP of gargantuan proportions in currently in production, hold tight.

Many people claim to have eclectic tastes, but few carry through on their promises as ably as Illum Sphere. The Manchester man is as likely to drop a hip hop joint as he is freak you out with some wave or dub, make you move your ass with some boogie or pummel you into submission with some techno. It is the same story at his night, Hoya:Hoya, which has grown into one of his native city’s most acclaimed parties, with unbeatable residents like Jon K, Krystal Klear and Jonny Dub a key part of that. Given his magpie approach to playing records, it’s no wonder the same goes for Illum Sphere’s style when producing. He has put out his wares on 3024, Fat City, Young Turks and Tectonic, and is now a regular Ninja Tune artist with a brand new album one the way later this year.  The mix, which is the first after his Fabriclive in November 2014, Illum Sphere serves up is typically atypical. Over the course of eighty minutes he takes you up, down and round and round through a hard to categorise world of sound. Atmosphere and texture are as important as beats and tempos, and it is hard to think of anyone as able to cover as much ground, with as much of a sense of cohesion, as this most fascinating musical man.

Nowadays, a lot of people think of dubstep as the music that plays while drunken frat boys pump their fists. From a Key & Peele parody to a general disdain among dance music fans over 30, dubstep has become somewhat of a whipping boy for EDM. It wasn’t always this way. Once upon a time, dubstep was the underground alternative to the overly commercial direction UK garage took in the mid-2000s. Dubstep was dark, sparse, and a direct link back to the drum & bass roots. Our guests today remember dubstep’s formative days, because they were there. Although the genre was well established in the UK by then, Caspa & Rusko's 2007 collab Fabriclive.37 helped introduce dubstep to audiences around the world. They also know what it’s like to lose the plot. Following the success of Fabriclive.37, they got caught up in touring and their partnership just sort of faded. They never exactly split up, but ended up not working together for more than half a decade. Now, they’re back together and making the kind of music they love, starting with the formidable new single, Blouse an Skirt. Along the way they’ve learned some important lessons about hard work, commitment, and avoiding the trap of making music to satisfy the crowd instead of making what you love. Listen in and learn what we learned. Then leave us a comment and a one-million star review. And don’t forget to come back next week for more. KASRA (UK) superb guestmix (Fabriclive promo): 1.
