In this episode I speak with Abby Burle, founder of Love Your Story, an organization dedicated to create places of belonging for families impacted by disabilities. This project started after Abby and her husband Ryan traveled around the country seeking medical care for their triplets. They realized the financial impact of disability on family, and that many families spend more than 22% of their annual income on expenses related to the disability. In the episode, Abby talks about her journey as a mom to children with disabilities, and how she advocated to start Love Your Story. She shares the story of their first project, which was to purchase a home in Gainesville, Georgia to provide physical and financial rest for families traveling to the area for medical treatment or intensive therapies. Abby is passionate about inclusion and changing the way we talk about disability and understanding those who live with disability in their families. Michigan’s problem-solving courts have been extraordinarily successful in solving problems and saving lives, thanks in large part to Dr. Barbara Howes. These innovative courts reach 97 percent of our state’s population and help to make communities statewide safer and stronger. Also called treatment courts, they are successful because participants can access treatment and other support needed to address underlying issues affecting persons entering the criminal justice and abuse neglect court systems, specifically, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, mental illness, and untreated trauma. Unlike traditional courts, problem-solving courts are not adversarial and take a team approach that brings community stakeholders together to reach a “win-win” outcome that prevents further offenses and saves local governments the cost of incarceration. The Cass County Courts have been on the forefront of the problem-solving/treatment court movement and have obtained numerous federal and state grants to provide much-needed services to our Cass County community. Cass County’s full continuum of problem-solving courts focuses on providing evidence-based responses that work to improve outcomes, restore families, and make our communities safer. My name is Jason Mendelsohn, and I am 49 years old. I have been happily married for 22 years, and we have three terrific kids; a son and daughter twins, 17, and an 11-year-old son. When I was 44, and in the best shape of my life, I put my hand on my neck to ponder a question while taking a financial exam and felt a bump. After passing the test, I spoke to my father, who is a physician, and we called my otolaryngologist (ENT) concerned about the bump. My ENT, knowing that I didn’t smoke and that I drink only socially, asked me to come see him over the next few weeks. I saw him three days later, as I am a guy that goes to the doctor. He put me on 10 days of antibiotics and steroids, while also having me schedule a needle biopsy and CT scan, in the slight chance the bump didn’t go away. Two days later I left for the Florida Keys on vacation and then flew from there to Washington, D.C. for an industry conference. I felt great and enjoyed both trips. Marianne will be discussing her new book; "Rae Of Hope: Stories Of Survivors", which is a book about kids who have been bullied. Rae of Hope: Stories from Survivors is a collection of real stories, written by real people who have suffered at the hands of bullies. In each story, contributors dig deep into their own painful memories to vulnerably expose their horrors with the hope that their survival will inspire others to fight. This collection includes contributions from across Canada, the US and UK. Read stories of bullying survivors, including submissions from Leah Parson’s, whose daughter “Heather” was bullied to the point of suicide in 2013 in Nova Scotia; Jenna Nickie, the “Warrior Mom” from Saskatchewan; Evan Wiens, who fought successfully for a gay-straight alliance within a Christian-based school district and Candace Maxymowich, a budding politician subjected to international online bullying during a civic election campaign also contributed to this project. Gina Dickason, founder of Families Impacted by Bullying shares her daughter Jade’s story for the first time ever. Along with real Stories, Rae of Hope: Stories from Survivors includes vital information that could help you identify and stop bullying in your home or community. By sharing our stories, we take back our power and are no longer victims. Tune in as we welcome author Marianne Curtis and her informative book titled; "Rae Of Hope:Stories From Survivors."
