This week, we're deep diving PepsiCo's $1.95 billion acquisition of the prebiotic soda brand Poppi, discussing the shift towards health-conscious beverages and their potentially misleading claims, and digging into influencer-adjacent beverage drama like cheater brands, "vending machine gate" and rumors about if the investments of Alex Cooper and Alix Earle in beverage companies have something to do with their public falling out (and Alix being "dropped" from the Unwell network). This deep dive touches on many topics: the broader trends in the beverage industry, influencer culture, the "Health Halo Effect" of unregulated better-for-you sodas, and, most importantly, the power of branding. Deep in the misty heart of Appalachia, where ancient mountains whisper secrets and shadows stretch just a little too long, there's a legend lurking at every turn. In this chilling episode, we step into the Devil's domain—literally. From the eerie Devil's Tramping Ground, where nothing dares grow, to the ominous Devil's Looking Glass, where the Prince of Darkness himself is said to gaze into the abyss, these mountains hold more than just ghost stories. But it's not just the devil who roams these haunted hills. Hooded figures appearing in the dead of night, sinister fiddle-playing that lures the unsuspecting into otherworldly gatherings, and faceless apparitions warning trespassers—Appalachia is alive with spirits, cryptids, and things that go bump (or boom) in the night. Is the devil truly a lurking menace, or is he simply the misunderstood guardian of these ancient lands? Does he deserve the nickname 'ole horny? And will he journal about his hurt feelings if your answer to that question was no? Grab your pendulum, keep your wits about you, and step carefully—because some doors, once opened, never close. As we heard last episode, Argentinian businessman Senor Davidoff had chartered a boat to take 41 of his men to South Georgia to salvage metal and other materials from abandoned whaling stations. The had not reported to the British head of a scientific mission at the port of Grytviken despite being told to. It was March 1982 and the Bahia Buen Suceso had dropped off the scrapmen on the island who were breaking down the abandoned buildings. They'd also been joined by a French film crew who were forced to seek shelter at South Georgia. After they fixed up the broken tiller and mast, they sailed to Leith Bay from Grytviken to film the scrapping – having decided to forego their planned trip to the Antarctic which had almost ended in catastrophe. On the 23rd March, Lord Carrington the British Foreign Secretary sent an even stronger message to Buenos Aires. If the Bahia Buen Suceso was not ordered back to remove the 41 Argentinian workers left on South Georgia, the Royal Marines would do this forcibly. Endurance was now ordered to head straight for South Georgia and arrived there on the 24th March, then the crew awaited further orders. By the evening of the 23rd March, Admirals, Lombardo, Allara and Busser were gathered at Puerto Belgrano. The all-important army General Garcia was at V Corps HQ only 37 kilometers away. These men communicated and drew up a rushed plan by the evening of the 25th March. Junta leader Galtieri was told the invasion of the Falklands could begin on the 1st April, with a South Georgia operation planned for the same day.The Falkland's plan was simple. First they'd capture Stanley with its airport and Royal Marines barracks. Then they'd focus on the second largest settlement at Goose Green. The Argentine navy would carry out these invasions which was partly dictated by the amphibious nature of the operations.  Get bonus content on Patreon Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Rachel Blank started Allara out of a personal need. Rachel was diagnosed with PCOS after years of struggling with unexplained health issues. Since then, she's seen multiple doctors, has read a ton of information, and tried a variety of diets. But through it all, she continued to feel alone, discouraged, and frustrated. And the more she talked to other women with PCOS, the more this seemed to be a common experience. Rachel finally decided that the status quo when it came to PCOS care needed to change, and that's why she built Allara. It's the level of compassionate, specialized care she wishes she'd had years ago—and the care we all deserve. In today's episode, you will learn: - The common symptoms of PCOS - Why it can take so many doctor's visits to actually receive a formal PCOS diagnosis - The issues surrounding the structure of our current healthcare system--and why it's leaving patients frustrated and confused - The importance of nutrition in managing PCOS symptoms - The confusion around suggested diets for women suffering from PCOS - What you can expect as a member of the Allara Health community - How Allara plans to redefine the approach to women's wellness Fill your coffee cup, sip away, and get your FYX of Coach Krysta and her guests on The FYX podcast. If you, a girlfriend, sister, daughter, coworker, or any other female in your life is struggling with PCOS--or thinks she might have PCOS symptoms, visit Allara's website at www.allarahealth.com to learn more about the Allara platform, and how Rachel and her team are helping PCOS patients receive better care. For this week's deep dive, Alex, Natasha, and Chris dug into the world of hormonal health, a sub-sector within the massive (and booming) world of digital health. The show was inspired by Natasha's latest Extra Crunch piece: "Hormonal Health is a massive opportunity: Where are the unicorns?". To round out the show, we asked one of the featured founders, Dr. Elizabeth Ruzzo, to hop on the mic and help us understand if hormonal health is at its infancy, or at an inflection point, in tech. The tl;dr before we hop into the show is that hormones -- while constantly evolving and changing -- are center node for a ton of health conditions that disproportionately impact women. These can include mental health issues, infertility, diabetes, and more. If you're someone interested in the world of digital health and always read about the Ro's and Hinge Health's of the ecosystem, this episode will teach you what else there is that deserves equal - if not more - attention. Here's what we got into:We started with landscaping! We defined the term "hormonal health" and got a sense of market size, as to show the opportunity there is to innovate here right now.Ruzzo walked us through the opportunity in pro-active medicine, as well as how investors reacted to her pitch when she was first raising her seed round. We ping-ponged around different reasons as to why hormonal health is an underserved category, starting with stigma and ending with stigma. This post from a set of venture capital investors discussing the market opportunity that women's health may have for founders and VCs alike. Then we got into Modern Fertility's acquisition by Ro, and why Ruzzo and many in the digital health community were surprised at the outcome. That said, it's still one of the rare exits, and as far as unicorns go, there are virtually no companies valued at over $1 billion that focus explicitly on women's hormonal health.Shifting gears, the trio turned to startups working on PCOS, one of the most common hormonal conditions out there that impacts one in ten women. Former Ro director Rachel Blank announced today that she is starting a company in this world, Allara. To round out the conversation we touched on the recent Veera venture capital round, and closed with a short discussion concerning the the term "femtech" and why it's not so good.Don't forget to take the Equity survey, and we'll chat you on Friday morning!
