Working under the online name Trackless Wild, Janisse Ray is an American writer, naturalist, and environmental activist. Just about everything she does speaks to me of the largest meaning and importance of what it means to be a capital G gardener in our world. A moving storyteller, speaker, and teacher, her book titles include Ecology of A Cracker Childhood (1999), a memoir; Wild Spectacle, Seeking Wonders in A World Beyond Humans (2021), a collection of essays; Red Lanterns (2021), a collection of poems; The Woods of Fannin County (2023), a novel, and many more. Her most recent title is based on her many years teaching writing, particularly place-based creative non-fiction: Craft & Current, A Manual for Magical Writing. Her acclaimed work has earned Janisse a Pushcart Prize, an American Book Award, the Green Prize for Sustainable Literature, a Nautilus Award, and the Arlene Eisenberg Award for Writing that Matters, among other well-deserved awards. For me, the most striking aspect of her talents (expressed ardently across genres) is the precision with which she lovingly gives voice to her own place, specifically her home ground of rural South Georgia's uplands and coastal plains – and from there, the greater U.S. Southeast generally. The climatic and seasonal fluctuations and moods of the flora and fauna across mountains, and meadows, roadside verges and meandering creeks, Janisse is always documenting the lives and ground out of which places grow people. Her work Seed Underground, A Growing Revolution to Save Food (2012), was one of handful of books about the poetics and politics of seed and seed people in their places that inspired me in my writing of What We Sow, On the Personal, Ecological, and Cultural Significance of Seeds (2023) (along with the likes of Henry David Thoreau's posthumously-published writings on seed dispersal, and Gary Nabhan's Enduring Seed). While very much rooted in the Southeast, Janisse, like all great nature writers, gives voice to the importance of all places through her devotion to her singular place. Janisse's teaching (online and at various universities across her career) focuses on encouraging the practice of place-based, heartfelt observation and writing as a way to grow better people, and therefore as a way to durably tend to all places. Janisse joins Cultivating Place this week to explore what it means to be devoted to place - in word, action, and spirit. Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Feb 22nd Publish Date: Feb 21st Commercial: From the Drake Realty Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, February 22nd, and Happy heavenly Birthday to MLB HOF Sparky Anderson. ***02.22.24 – BIRTHDAY – SPARKY ANDERSON*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. A Couple indicted for disposing of baby's ashes Five People Displaced After Fire Breaks Out in Marietta Marietta Council Tightens New Restrictions on Downtown Housing Plus, Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food longevity. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: A Couple indicted for disposing of baby's ashes A couple from Dallas, Anilus and Rosnie Frederic, were indicted last week by a Cobb grand jury on serious charges relating to the alleged theft and disposal of a child's ashes. The incident reportedly took place at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital's linen sorting facility where both were employed. The Frederics are accused of stealing a small gold and black urn containing the cremated remains of a baby from Carla Watson on January 25, 2023. The urn was reportedly located inside a teddy bear belonging to Watson. The couple allegedly took the urn home and disposed of the remains in an unspecified manner1. Initially charged with theft by taking and abandonment of a dead body, the charges were upgraded to include malicious removal of a dead body from a grave, removal of a dead body from a grave, and abandonment of a dead body, all felonies. They were arrested in April, and each posted an $8,470 bond after spending a day in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. The indictment was handed down on Tuesday, February 13, in Cobb Superior Court, presided over by Judge Henry Thompson. STORY 2: Five People Displaced After Fire Breaks Out in Marietta A fire that erupted in a multifamily home in Marietta on Tuesday morning left five people displaced. The incident occurred on the 9000 block of Whittington Parkway off Austell Road around 10 a.m. Over a dozen fire crews from Cobb County were quick to respond, successfully containing the flames. The blaze was primarily limited to one unit, though two other units suffered smoke damage. Cobb Fire Chief of Staff, Michael Cunningham, commended the swift and efficient response of the fire crews. "Our crews did a fantastic job getting the fire isolated to one unit," he said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and thankfully, no injuries were reported1. As a reminder to the community, Cunningham emphasized the importance of checking smoke detectors regularly and closing doors before bedtime. STORY 3: Marietta Council Tightens New Restrictions on Downtown Housing Marietta City Council has recently implemented stricter controls on downtown residential development by modifying zoning regulations1. Under the new rules, developers must now gain specific approval from the council for construction of residential buildings in the downtown area. This significant shift follows a series of heated debates, including a freeze on apartment construction and disputes over architectural designs. Prior to this change, residential construction was generally permitted in the central business district. However, the new regulations necessitate explicit council approval1. In addition to this, the amendment revises the definition of building height, retaining height restrictions but allowing certain exceptions for structures such as church spires. These modifications are intended to address concerns about preserving the historical and aesthetic integrity of downtown Marietta. This comes in the wake of previous legal disputes and disagreements over development projects1. As always, stay tuned for more local news and updates. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back. Break: HENRY COUNTY SHERRIF STORY 4: North Cobb Christian Triumphantly Advances to Round 2 The North Cobb Christian Eagles soared to victory in the first round of the Class AA state tournament, defeating North Murray with a solid 77-56 score. The team's strong start set the pace, leading them to host either Providence Christian or Columbia in round two. Guard Gabe Bolden was a standout, netting 14 of his 19 points in the first quarter. As a collective, the team demonstrated exceptional offensive prowess, contributing to their success. North Murray's Isaiah Morrison led his team with 16 points and seven rebounds. Stay local, stay informed, and watch for updates on the Eagles' tournament journey. STORY 5: Fannin County too much for NCC The Fannin County girls' basketball team delivered a commanding performance against North Cobb Christian, securing a 65-37 victory in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs. The game, which took place in Kennesaw, saw Fannin County take an early lead, scoring the first five points and maintaining their advantage throughout the match. This win propels the Rebels into the second round of the playoffs, where they will face off against the winner of the Providence Christian and Columbia match. North Cobb Christian, despite having won 13 out of their last 14 games, experienced their second consecutive loss, bringing their season to a close. Despite the loss, North Cobb Christian coach Ray Gutierrez expressed pride in his team's accomplishments and optimism for future improvement. North Cobb Christian relied heavily on Addie Johnson, who led the team with 18 points, while Ava Garner contributed with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Fannin County, on the other hand, was propelled by Courtney Davis, who scored 22 points, including five 3-pointers. Davis played a significant role in establishing the Rebels' early lead, scoring 11 of her points in the first quarter. We'll be back in a moment. Matthew and James sit down with Tom Gillespie, long time Leonard resident. Tom has lead an incredible life, from growing up in an orphanage to serving in Vietnam and on to being a Police Officer, Judge, and now Author. His two books "Silent Tears" and "Vietnam A Week in December 1969" explain what made Tom the way he is and the decisions he had to make. Press Release: One Week in December 1969, is a compelling read that appreciates a group of soldiers who served in the Vietnam War 1969. This book explains the event that took place in a matter of a week and was important enough to impact a certain timeline in history. Without these soldiers and their efforts, the world may not have been the same. These events have been sworn to secrecy, up until now. Tom Gillespie has finally been able to openly discuss all of the important events that took place during this time. He explains all of the precautions and the details that are necessary takes in this story. Tom Gillespie has been a law officer, a Constable, a judge, and the owner-operator of his own private security agency. In his book, you will learn more about his experience as a government contractor with a Top Secret Clearance. Tom Gillespie is not a famous person, but he should be. Few, if any, people in history have impacted world events on as large a scale as Tom Gillespie did in one week and gone completely unnoticed. Get copies of this particularly interesting read and enjoy a book that will help you realize how big the world is and how we remain unaware of the truth and sacrifices people make daily. Vietnam – One Week in December 1969 is out now on Amazon. About The Author Tom Gillespie is a noteworthy man who has lived with secrets no one was made aware of. He is not one to brag and certainly keeps himself busy. Vietnam is not his first book, and his previous release, “Silent Tears,” is his story about his childhood which is equally impressionable. He is a simple man who has stuck by his vows and lived a peculiarly secret life.

First place winners will compete in the state round on March 11 at the Academies of Creative Education, located on 1160 Dahlonega Highway in Cumming. Students who earned a top three placing in their category at the regional event will receive a medal or ribbon for their achievement. Frank Graham and Lori Stuart, both CCSD instructional technology specialists, organized the event according to a CCSD press release. The regional event was held virtually this year with students submitting a video presentation of their projects. CCSD students competed alongside Pickens, Gilmer, Murray and Fannin County students in the Piedmont region. For a full list of CCSD region winners, visit https://www.cherokeek12.net/News/techfair23. Cherokee County accounted for 29 of 36 possible selections on the all-Region 6AAAAAA basketball teams this week, with two players of the year in Brandon Rechsteiner and Mataya Gayle. Etowah's Rechsteiner and River Ridge's Gayle led their respective squads to No. 1 seeds heading into next week's region tournament. The Eagles are 11-1 in Region 6AAAAAA play, while the Knights went undefeated in the region for the second straight year. Eight honorees came from River Ridge, including five from the girls team alone — Gayle, first-teamer Sophia Pearl, second-teamer Kayla Cleaveland and honorable mentions Allie Sweet and Makayla Roberson. Pearl is averaging 13.4 points, behind only Gayle and Cleaveland (14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds). Etowah had the second-most players named to the all-region teams, with five boys and one girl. Mason Etter joined Rechsteiner as first-teamers, while Chase Clemmons and Dimitri Angelakos were named to the second team. Rechsteiner and the Eagles had an especially strong January. The Virginia Tech-bound guard averaged 19.3 points, 5.1 assists and 4.3 rebounds while leading Etowah to a 9-1 record in the month. Sequoyah and Woodstock each had five players earn all-region recognition, with Creekview at four. Following its rejuvenation during region play, Woodstock's girls were represented by Karson Martin and Casey Miller on the first team, alongside Pearl and Sequoyah's Elle Blatchford. Four nonprofit organizations in metro Atlanta have received donations from Delta Community Credit Union toward their respective mission to support local youth education. The credit union invested $35,000 in the educational services organizations Wednesday, kicking off the 10th year of its “Philanthropic Fund” awards. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta was awarded $10,000 to support its “Big Futures” curriculum, which emphasizes college and career exploration for students in grades 8 through 12. The organization, which offers one-to-one mentoring relationships for area youth, serves families in 12 metro Atlanta counties including Cherokee County. Another $10,000 was awarded to Communities in Schools of Atlanta, a dropout prevention organization that partners with 63 schools in economically challenged areas across Atlanta Public Schools, as well as Clayton County, DeKalb County, and Fulton County Public Schools. The grant will help provide wraparound services and intensive case management to nearly 2,800 students and support the organization's College and Career Readiness Program. Breakthrough Atlanta also received $10,000 to support its Vox Teen Voices program, which offers free afterschool and summer workshops for Atlanta teens. Mental Fitness 21st Century Learning received $5,000 to support its STEAM Academy, which allows many students who lack access to quality, affordable afterschool programs to participate in a STEAM curriculum that includes drones and robotics. Cherokee County and four of its cities have received a federal grant for the creation of a transportation safety plan to improve pedestrian safety. Cherokee County, Canton, Holly Springs, Woodstock and Ball Ground were awarded a $450,000 action plan grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All program on Feb. 1. The grant was part of $800 million in awards for 510 projects through the first round of funding for the program, which provides funding for regional and local jurisdictions to develop a transportation safety action plan aimed at improving road designs to better sidewalks and crosswalks to prevent deaths and serious injuries on the nation's roadways. Day told the Tribune Friday that the public can expect to see the plan in 2024. The next steps are to complete grant award agreements and procure a consultant to complete the study. The study will likely begin later this year, he said. The plan will determine what projects and countermeasures are needed to improve the safety of the county's transportation system, Day said. With this plan and list of projects, the county and the cities can then set forth a strategy and timeline to complete the projects. Day added that the plan will likely make recommendations on intersection, signalization and pedestrian facilities improvements, among other possibilities. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services promoted two firefighters Thursday night at the Cherokee County Fire Training Complex. Fire Apparatus Operator Justin Martin was promoted to the rank of sergeant and Sgt. Nicholas Spain was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. The newly promoted firefighters began serving in their new roles Feb. 5. The two were surrounded by family, friends, and fellow firefighters at the event as they were recognized and celebrated for this accomplishment. Fire Chief Eddie Robinson pinned the promoted firefighters with their new-collar insignia. Badges were pinned on the firefighters by family members. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - - The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. Josey trailed 38-30 heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored Fannin County 17 to 4 in the final frame. The Lady Eagles defense has defined their season, and that proved to be the difference in the state championship as well, scoring 22 points off turnovers, compared to 11 for the Lady Rebels. “We've been playing from behind the last three rounds of the playoffs and we were never in a spot where we didn't believe we could finish it out,” said Josey coach Jawan Bailey. “I had to tell myself about three or four times in that second half that we've been here before, we've done this before, don't get down, don't let the girls see you get down and don't allow them to get down,” added Bailey. “We were never in a terrible spot where we didn't believe we could finish it off,” said Bailey. Josey last played in the state championship game in 2018, losing to Laney. Several Josey seniors on this year's championship team played in the 2018 game as freshman, including Jamirah Mitchell. “When we were down, when we had that deficit, we knew we had to fight back,” said Mitchell. “We got ourselves together, talked in the huddle, came back out and came away with a win. It brought tears to my eyes,' added Mitchell. “I have blood family on my staff and then I have 12 daughters that I coach,” said Bailey. “It's one big family atmosphere and it's always sweeter to win this thing with your family,” added Bailey. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ernest-tate/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ernest-tate/support

"Buck" Rogers of Rogers & Fite, LLC share how they secured justice for the Johnson family after an intoxicated 16-year-old driver recklessly slammed his Dodge Ram 1500 into the back of their minivan at 78 mph. Inside the minivan were David and Susannah Johnson and their four children -- Brooke, 10, Kathryn, 8, Hannah, 6 and Owen, 3 -- who were enjoying a family vacation in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Tragically, Hannah was pronounced dead at the scene, and Owen sustained massive injuries that caused him to be a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic. Kathryn's pelvis was shattered on impact, causing her to have to learn to walk again. Brooke had several broken bones and her mother Susannah sustained multiple broken ribs. After two hours of deliberation, a Fannin County, Georgia jury returned a verdict of $128,813,522, including $40 million for Hannah's wrongful death, $30 million for Owen's intangible damages and another $40 million for his future medical expenses. This was the fifth-largest wrongful death jury verdict in the United States in 2018.
