What happens when a mother, daughter, and best friend set out on a road trip across France to celebrate a milestone birthday? In Celebrating 75 Years with Vanessa Christman, host Annie Sargent talks to Vanessa, a librarian from California, about the trip of a lifetime: Mother-Daughter Celebrating a 75th Birthday in France. Get the podcast ad-free Vanessa planned this adventure around her mom's long-time love of France. They landed at Charles de Gaulle, picked up a rental car, and hit the road. From charming Burgundy villages like Tournus, to the sparkling Mediterranean coast near Martigues, to the lavender-scented hills of Provence and the grand castles of the Loire Valley — they saw it all. Along the way, they visited abbeys, tasted Gigondas wine, created custom perfumes in Grasse, explored markets in Carpentras, and dined at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Ardèche. Vanessa shares what went right (most things), what went wrong (French tacos!), and her top tips for traveling with someone who has reduced mobility. This episode is full of practical travel advice and heartfelt reflections. It's especially helpful for anyone dreaming of a multigenerational trip to France. Megan Bartholomay, our Froggy Wine Specialist from Republic National Distributing is back with another episode of Wine Wednesday.  Follow Megan @fargos.winest  This week's wine: Saint Cosme Little James' Basket Press Blanc  Wine Description Château de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the benchmark wines of the appellation. The property has been in the hands of the Barruol family since 1490. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992 making a dramatic shift to quality and converting to biodynamics in 2010. The estate lies in the heart of Gigondas where 15 hectares of vineyard grow in the shade of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain. In addition to the estate-grown wines labeled “Château de Saint Cosme,” Louis Barruol buys grapes from contracted growers, labeling these “négociant” wines simply as “Saint Cosme.” Saint Cosme Little James' Basket Press Blanc is an unconventional blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc are traditionally grown in different regions but Louis Barruol believes them to be complementary. The wine is vinified in stainless steel tanks.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For the first episode of season 4, the Cupboard is pleased to welcome Nelson Boschman to speak with us about his book, The Growing Season, and to lead us in an informative wine tasting. A pastor, teacher, and musician, Nelson considers himself a wine enthusiast rather than an expert. He sees in the vineyard and wine-making the stuff of life and spirit.   We hear some of Nelson's story, about concepts of identity and challenge and change that are present in wine-making and in the spiritual life. We see, in Nelson's love of the vineyard and the process, that often the most enduring spiritual lessons come in paying close attention to the things that we love.   Tasting Notes: We learned a great deal from Nelson about the ways we can experience and enjoy wine. “80% of the wine experience is olfactory, it happens through the sense of smell. To look, swirl, sniff are the first three steps to taste.” The wines we tasted on today's episode are both available at BC Liquor Stores. The first was the 2018 Cairanne from Boutinot and the 2020 Gigondas from Dom Brusset, both from the Rhone region in France.

Ep 425: Cairanne of the Southern Côtes du Rhône with Jean-Etienne Alary of Domaine Alary

Wine for Normal People

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2022 51:29

Cairanne is an 877 ha/2,167 acre appellation in the southern Rhône Valley that has been farmed since the time of the Greeks. It is not just a regular appellation, it is a cru of elevated status in the Côtes du Rhône. It doesn't get the credit it deserves! After tasting much of it at a wine fair in the southern Rhône, I found it unbelievably delicious. A cru with acidity and a lighter profile but still so much character? YES. And after speaking to a few of the other producers in the appellation, I found Jean-Etienne Alary and his father, Denis. Jean-Etienne has a worldly view, after spending time in Australia and New Zealand, and Domaine Alary's wines are some of the best Cairanne out there. Combining old techniques and newer ideas, Domaine Alary makes spectacular wines, with Jean-Etienne taking over the main winemaking duties from his father, Denis, who helped lead the charge to make Cairanne a Cru. Photo: Denis and Jean-Etienne Alary. ©Wine For Normal People   Here's a quick look at the topics we discuss in the show:  1. Jean-Etienne gives us a full education on Cairanne. We cover: Cairanne's location and its proximity to places like Gigondas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Rasteau, as well as the Rhône River The main grapes that are grown, typical blends of Cairanne, and how a small percentage of Cinsault, Counoise or Carignan can go a long way. We discuss the whites, which are a small but very important part of the wines of Cairanne The three main types of terroir and what grows best on each The climate and the strong Mistral effect, which helps keep disease off the grapes. We hit on climate change and drought, and what it means for certain grapes in the appellation The elegance that defines Cairanne versus all other Cru of the south   2. Then we discuss the 11 generations of the Alary family, their history in Cairanne and their essential role in Cairanne The Alarys have been involved in wine in Cairanne since 1692 and have farmed exclusively in this area since, surviving wars, phylloxera, mildews, to be what it is today We discuss Denis Alary, Jean-Etienne's father and how he started to make significant changes when he graduated from oenology school in the 80s. We talk about the age of the big wine critic and how the Rhône bent to the will of certain critics but has come back to its roots. discuss how Denis and the close-knit wine community of Cairanne fought to get the appellation to cru status for decades, finally achieving the goal in 2016. Finally, we cover how Denis moved Alary to a certified organic property in 2009, years before it became trendy!   3. We discuss the cru system and how, even though all cru are equal in the eyes of the law, they are not treated the same. Jean-Etienne talks about his aspirations to make Cairanne as well recognized as other cru     4. We discuss Jean-Etienne's experiences in winemaking in Australia at Henschke and New Zealand at Seresin and the differences in how things get done in France vs the New World.   Photo: The Wines of Domaine Alary. ©Wine For Normal People 5. We talk about the wines of Alary: The Cairanne from Alary, and the role of Carignan and how it can be made in a lighter, elegant style The whites, although only 5% of the AOC, are 20% of Alary's production and based on the Clairette grape, from which Alary makes stunning whites that are reminiscent of Sauvignon blanc. Winemaking philosophy and the use of technology versus intuition The future for Cairanne and for Alary   If you haven't had a wine from  Cairanne, seek it out, especially the wines of Alary. These wines are elegant, drinkable, and fantastic with food! ____________________________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week:  Wine Spies uncovers incredible wines at unreal prices - on big names or boutique brands from all over the world at up to 75% off! This podcast was recorded after my trip to the Découvertes en Vallée du Rhône, a wine trade fair that I was invited to by Inter-Rhône. It was a wonderful learning experience and I stayed on for a few days afterwards to explore Hermitage, Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, St. Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, and in the south, Beaumes de Venise with Claude Chabran of Rhonéa, Gigondas with Elisa Cheron from Familie Cheron of Domaine du Grand Montmirail, and a self-guided tour of vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It was a fantastic trip and I am grateful to the people at Inter-Rhone for the opportunity. Photo: Découvertes en Vallée du Rhône at Palais des Papes in Avignon, Elizabeth Schneider, Wine For Normal People   If you are curious about some of the people I mention as partners in crime in the show: Matt Walls, Rhône expert, Decanter's Rhône contributor, author of Wines of the Rhône Adam Lechmere, editor of Club Oenologique and prominent wine writer Elizabeth “Liz” Gabay, MW – Rosé goddess (and the world's foremost rosé expert) Jamie Goode of Wine Anorak and author or several books Also, not mentioned by name (with apologies, but MC Ice had me thinking of Brits – these guys are fantastic), Kurtis Kolt, a great writer and consultant from Vancouver, Canada and Gurvinder Bhatia, Editor-in-Chief of Quench magazine Photo: The Rhône in Bloom! by Elizabeth Schneider, Wine For Normal People   Côtes du Rhône percentages are PLANTINGS, not blend percentages in Côtes du Rhône wines. So if the requirement is 40% Grenache for a Côtes du Rhône, that is how much Grenache must be plantedin a vineyard for Côtes du Rhône, not how much has to be in the blend. Case in point: I had a 99% Syrah that was a Village wine.   The producer is a big part of whether you like a wine or not, but you should still learn region before you learn producer. Producer can make or break your experience. It's hard to learn but once you understand what the region has to offer, the next step is finding the producers you like. Great producers: Familie Cheron of Domaine du Grand Montmirail, Gigondas   About white grapes in rosé wine…it's a-ok! I mentioned Elizabeth “Liz” Gabay, MW – goddess of pink wine and her son Ben. Look them up. White wines are allowed to be used in rosé as long as those grapes are fermented with the juice from red grapes. Whites Clairette, Picpoul, and Bouboulenc are used to lighten up one of my absolute favorite rosés, the Rhône cru, Tavel.   Roussanne grows really well in the southern Rhône and there is more of it than ever before. The is distinctive when you taste it in a blend and there are more whites from Côtes du Rhône and the Villages planting and growing this awesome grape to make it a bigger part of blends. Check out the pod we did on this wonderful grape.   Clairette is another a grape that no one talks about it but is awesome – acidic, refreshing, can be like Sauvignon Blanc, lighter style Rieslings, zippy, and green fruit notes. It is used in large proportions in Côtes du Rhône blanc from the south.   Cairanne, the cru of the southern Rhône, is light on its feet and a completely different wine than the rest of the cru. Because of the larger proportion of Cinsault, the lighter soils, the Mistral wind, and the terroir, the wines have a lighter touch than many of the other southern Rhône cru. Cairanne makes pretty and elegant wine still with great fruit.   An important point from the trip: Please STOP SENDING ME COMMENTS ABOUT MY FRENCH.Even when I tried to say names of regions and wines, I was not understood by folks in the Rhône or other parts of the south. It often took Google translate to communicate. If I tried to pronounce things in French it would have a terrible effect – neither French speakers nor English speakers would understand me and it would be futile. WFNP is an English language podcast and I need to pronounce things so that English language speakers (most of whom speak no French) understand what wines and regions I am saying so they can seek these wines out. After this trip, I will no longer be answering these comments and if you find that offensive, you can feel free to turn off the show. I'm sorry to see you go, but I'm no longer going to be apologetic for anglicizing French. Photo: Dentelles du Montmirail in Gigondas, by Elizabeth Schneider, Wine For Normal People   Gigondas is NOT a baby Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in my opinion. Some is very tannic and harsh, some is just beautiful but it is all about skill and terroir. The best producers aren't trying to mimic Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They are their own expression of mainly Grenache in a hot, mistral effected areas of the Dentelles du Montmirail. Moulin de la Gardette and Domaine de Longue Toque are exquisite examples of terroir-driven Gigondas wines that are not trying to emulate Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Photo: Condrieu, by Elizabeth Schneider, Wine For Normal People Condrieu has a lot more to it than you may think. First, it has two different parts, In the north where the wines are almost Sauvignon Blanc like – herbal, lime-like, lightly floral (jasmine) with higher acidity and a lighter body. In the south the wines are more like a traditional Viognier – peachy, sweet lemon, apricot notes with a fuller body but still with more acidity than New World Viognier Condrieu has some rows of vines that, because of the undulation of the hills, face north or northeast. These north facing rows are not considered Condrieu and are declassified into IGP Viognier, according to Aurelien Chirat from Vignoble Chirat. Finally, whole bunch fermentation can be used to add texture to wines but also to dilute or absorb alcohol. The stems have water in them that will dilute alcohol, they also can absorb some of the alcohol into their wood. Aurelien Chirat of Vignoble Chirat in Condrieu Most winemakers use outside labs as required by the AOC laws. There is use of technology as a check on the health of the wine, but analysis is not a decision making tool unless there is a problem. This is a very different philosophical bent than the New World. Photo, Côte Rôtie, by Elizabeth Schneider, Wine For Normal People  Two things on Côte Rôtie… Despite what I have heard and read in recent times, Côte Rôtie has have Viognier in it – I didn't find a producer who made a wine without at least a little. Most had 3-5% Viognier in their Syrah wine. The only wines that didn't have Syrah were special old vine plots or from designated vineyards, from which the winemakers wanted to showcase the Syrah for that particular wine. The plateau of Côte Rôtie has high quality, even though wine people malign it. I loved some of the wines from there – they are softer and easier to drink younger. Some of the wines smelled like manure and carnations – there are several theories as to why, which we discuss in the show.   Photo: Hermitage, by Elizabeth Schneider, Wine For Normal People  A few things on the very small appellation of Hermitage Books say producers are permitted to blend in Marsanne and Roussanne into the Syrah. That is true, but there isn't one producer who is doing that. The style is 100% Syrah and although that is for flavor, it's also because producers need white grapes for the white wine of Hermitage, which represents 30% of what is grown and made. If you haven't had a white Hermitage, that should be your next investment! This is rare wine and it's a bargain for how little there is in the world.   Crozes-Hermitage has two parts around the base of the hill of Hermitage each makes different wine styles. The northern side is on uniform granite. This is the old part of the appellation before it was expanded many times into southern flatter areas after World War II. Crozes Hermitage makes 50% of all the wine of the northern Rhone and the flat, southern part is less expensive than any other part of the Rhone, so younger producers have a chance to move in and get established. This is a good thing, even if it means the wine can be variable. Photo: St.Joseph, by Elizabeth Schneider, Wine For Normal People  St. Joseph is a tannic wine and it is not similar to Crozes-Hermitage, as many books will tell you.The appellation is varied, with many different types of granite (it really should be broken up into pieces). Although the wines from farther north are a little softer, I found them to be so harsh in tannin I could barely drink them. The verdict is out on if they will mellow with time, but to drink the young wine was nearly impossible for me. If you love harsh tannin, this is your wine.   Châteauneuf-du-Pape is bigger than the entire northern Rhone combined. It is VERY varied in terroir, farming, and quality, so caveat emptor!     There are a million other little tidbits woven into this show. If you want to explore Rhône beyond study guides and generalizations, this show will get you far in understanding how different reality is from what may be published in books.   I hope you enjoy our “myth-busters, Rhône edition”! ___________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week: Our sponsor: Wine Spies! Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly newspaper column.Wine-steak pairing 3-9-2022You do not have to be a wine cognoscente to know cabernet sauvignon plays well with the salty and fatty flavors of a rich, well-marbled steak. But, what if you want to go beyond that pairing?Grilled steaks—strip, rib-eye, hanger—certainly pair with cab, but so do syrah and merlot. Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas (both grenache-syrah-mourvèdre blends) are in the conversation. Syrah/shiraz is a bit lighter, but brings whiffs of smokiness to its role as another cab alternative.Rib-eye, T-bone, and porterhouse steaks win with zin. Zinfandel delivers acidity, tannins, spice, and grapey notes to complement the meat flavors. High alcohol can abet the bonhomie of the beef feast.Photo by SphilbrickLeaner cuts of meat like top sirloin or flank steaks enjoy pairing with malbec and its jammy, dark fruits, and chocolate elements. If you prefer filet or tenderloin—lighter cuts with less fat and more delicate cooking such as searing and/or oven roasting—then lighter reds enter the dinner drama: pinot noir, beaujolais, nebbiolo, sangiovese. As cuts get lighter with little or no fat like filet mignon, pairing with pinot noir certainly enters the pouring picture. A light, tasty cut such as New York strip, even with its marbling, works with gamay (Beaujolais). In both cases, the less assertive wines allow tender and delicious meat to play the lead in the meal. Finally, if you refrain from plunking down big bucks for meat and instead chow down on comfort food like meatloaf, circle back to big reds—cab, merlot, shiraz, malbec, cab franc, red blends. Beauty here is you can go with the more affordable examples of those wines, even ones that come in boxes, and still be proud of your pair.Tasting notes:• Galil Mountain Winery Merlot, Galilee, Israel 2018: Soft, easy drinker.

Le but ? Welcome back! This week our house wines are from the Southern Rhone. The Southern Rhone is an incredibly varied and diverse region with a lot going on.  And we cover a lot of it in this episode. If you haven't checked out the episode last week about Chateauneuf du Pape, please give that a listen before this episode because we reference it quite a bit and it will provide a lot of context for the Cotes du Rhone, Gigondas and Vacqueras, and some of their less famous friend appellations. We also go full in and talk about rosé and the sweet wines of Rasteau and Muscat Beaumes de Venice. So if you have ever found yourself wondering what GSM is or how dry IS a dry  rosé, then I can't wait to share this episode with you. I used my favorite book, the Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson. i also looked at maps in the World Atlas of Wine 8th Edition, by Jancis Robinson. I also used the website https://www.chateauneuf.dk/ and Decanter Magazine.   If you are interested in any of the wines I talk about in this show: Stephane Ogier: http://www.stephaneogier.fr/Chateau Trinquevedel: https://www.chateau-trinquevedel.fr/en/Chateau D'Esclans: https://esclans.com/Kirkland Brand Gigondas: https://costcowineblog.com/2018-kirkland-signature-gigondas/OK that last one has no website of it's own but there is a whole blog that just reviews Costco Wines. This is an independent podcast, written, narrated and produced by me, Rachael so if you are going to do the Gigondas Pepsi challenge then make sure to review and rate and I will see you next week. If you spotted a correction or would like to request and episode you can reach out at housewinepodcast@gmail.com or on instagram @housewinepodcast. Music Credit: Too Cool by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4534-too-coolLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

They talk about vulnerability, fear, judgment, shame, prevents pleasure in people's lives. Michelle asks Beth how do her clients find her or recognize they need a pleasure coach. Beth shares many of the questions her clients are asking from communication, to how to have sex, and more. They discuss at length about what society thinks pleasure should be versus what a person's true pleasure is and how to recognize and to embrace it. Beth says in the search for pleasure it's beneficial to know your Pleasure Type. She talks about the Erotic Blueprint which describes five pleasure types, sexual stages, and pathways to pleasure. They talk about how society is starved for authentic pleasure. The conversation winds through the tendency to apply guilt after pleasure and how it can morph into shame which becomes very dangerous. People need to identify what truly matters and aligns with their core values. Michelle shares her philosophy about happiness and its constant presence in life. Beth talks about how she uses Improv principles in learning authentic pleasure and developing a more robust sex life. Serge Doré is a fan favorite and he returns to tell us about the place in France where he feels most at home: the Rhône. He's been in wine for decades, since he got his start in his native Quebec, and has been a wine importer and wholesaler out of Chappaqua, New York for almost as long as he's been in wine. To order any of the wines he mentions or those you find on Serge Dore Selections , go to Grapes The Wine Company We've learned about life as an importer and about the business of wine in Bordeaux from Serge, and this time he tells us about the Rhône. If you are unfamiliar with the area, I'd check out the Rhône overview show first. This show goes into detail on regions and Serge regals us with stories of meetings with famous producers, and the spectacular wines they make.    The show notes this week are primarily a list of the many producers Serge mentions in the show.   Big Northern Rhône Names: E. Guigal (king of Côte Rôtie),  Domaine Jean Michel Gerin (Côte Rôtie) M. Chapoutier (king of Hermitage) Domaine Jean-Louis Chave (Hermitage, mainly) Cornas: Domaine August Clape, Domaine Alain Voge (the Cornas appellation is much improved, more elegant) St. Joseph: J.L. Chave, Domaine Chez, Delas, Anthony Paret (also makes excellent Condrieu, a white-only appellation of Viognier) Crozes-Hermitage: Laurent Fayolle, Cave de Tain It's from the southern Rhône but here we also mention a Roussanne wine in this converasation of whites: Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc Roussanne Vieilles Vignes    One great nugget Serge shares on Condrieu: It's good the year it is released, not after. Also, don't forget Hermitage Blanc -- it's stunning.  Southern Rhône Cotes du Rhone Villages: we discuss Plan de Dieu – and Philippe Cambie Gigondas, Vacqueryas: We discuss Domaine du Pradas, Yves/ElisaCheron   We discuss fewer producers and more about the differences in Cru: Vinsobres: Higher in altitude, cooler climate, more elegant wine Cairanne: Bigger wine, bolder than Vinsobres Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueryas: Are all bolder styles Others mentioned: Lirac, Rasteau, Beaumes de Venise Serge tells us the trick to getting good Cotes du Rhone: which is buy a brand, not something you’ve never seen unless you know the importer or producer! If you want the Estate Côte du Rhône he imports:  Domaine de Dionysos. Serge tells us the most important thing about the Rhône and maybbe about wine in general these days:  “It depends on who makes the wine and the attention they pay to the wines”      And according to Serge this is getting easier as the younger generation is looking to focus on quality not quantity! Go togo to Grapes The Wine Company to order any of the wines Serge discusses!    Thanks to our sponsors this week: Thanks to YOU! The podcast supporters on Patreon, who are helping us to make the podcast possible and who we give goodies in return for their help!

Ep 237: The Grape Miniseries - Grenache/Garnacha

Wine for Normal People

This week, we focus on this splendid grape that has come into its own. From obscure blender to a star varietal, Grenache or Garnacha is a total crowd-pleaser and can be a delicious wine in its simplest and most complex formats. We give the lowdown on it -- from red to white to "furry" Grenache, I'm positive you'll hear about some wine in this podcast that will make you want to run out and get it!    Here are the show notes: Grape Overview We cover the origin story -- the wine spread around around Mediterranean and we believe it originated in Spain in Aragón, moved north and south of Pyrenees to France. The Sardinians of Italy would argue this premise... It's traditionally been a blender but now great varietal examples are available Grape character: Grenache is fruity, rich, sweet-tasting with red and black berry notes  Its challenges: it ripens to high sugar levels and it can oxidize – even young wines brown around the rim. It can lack tannin The key to great Grenache/Garnacha -- it NEEDS well drained soils and water stress to thrive and yields must be controlled!! The vine has strong wood and is heat and wind tolerant -- it grows well in hot, dry climates. Makes everything from rosé, to white, to sweet wines and does it well!  We discuss Grenache Blanc (one of my faves!) The wines of white Grenache are full bodied – fat and soft or floral, terroir-driven wines Usually blended with Grenache Gris, Clairette, Marsanne, Roussane, Viognier, Macabeo, others If yileds controlled, great full bodied wines that can be age worthy Places: Châteauneuf-du-Pape,  California, South Africa, Priorat, CndP, Tarragona, Rioja, Navarra   Other mutations --   Southern France and Sardinia: Grenache Rosé and Grenache gris make pale rosé and lightly tinted white wines. Pink skinned and more perfumed than Grenache blanc Garnacha Peluda: wines lower in alcohol and higher in acidity that show spicy and savory notes  Where do we find Grenache/Garnacha? France Rhone: Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, Vacqueryas, and all over the southern Rhône - Grenache noir is the most common variety  The GSM blend: Grenache can have a jam-like consistency when very ripe but usually adds bright fruit and alcohol to the blend. Syrah is typically blended to provide color and spice, while Mourvèdre can add elegance and structure to the wine Rosé: Tavel and Lirac roses, Provence, Rousillon for rose, Roussillon: dry wines, but also Vins Doux Naturels – Banyuls, Maury   Spain Blends with Tempranillo, varietal as Garnacha Considered a "workhorse" grape of low quality suitable for blending but Priorat's rise and New World Rhone Rangers sparked a re-evaluation the variety North and east: Rioja, Navarra, Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Cariñena, Madrid, La Mancha, Priorat, Penedes Dry farmed, concentrated and tannic Aragón is the probable origin of the grape and has the largest surface of Garnacha in Spain     Italy Cannonau in Sardinia -- high alcohol, can be harsh and green.  Other Old World regions– Other southern Italian places, Algeria, Israel, Morocco, Cyprus, also grown in Croatia   New World: Australia and California   Australia Lots of GSM, some varietal wines McLaren Vale = luscious richness and spicy notes Barossa Valley =jammy, hugely fruity, can be over the top United States Used and abused at first -- grown in the hot central San Joaquin Valley because of its tolerance to heat and drought. Made sweet "white Grenache" wines, a la white Zinfandel Rhône Rangers movement in the late 20th c helped bring Grenache up in status -- rising in popularity and quality in CA In the early 20th century, Grenache was one of the first successful grapes in Washington State.   Garnacha/Grenache is an amazing, do-all grape. There's a style for everyone, so try it if you haven't!    Thank you to our sponsors this week: YOU! In this solo podcast, I give you a bunch of ideas to make gift giving and holiday pairing easy! Here are the show notes: 1. First I talk about potential all-purpose wines that will work for a lot of different holiday foods: The reds: Sonoma, California Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon Chilean Syrah Côtes-du-Rhône (or Gigondas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape) Bordeaux -- specifically Merlot-based, and look for the Cru Bourgeois label The whites: Santa Barbara, California Chardonnay South African or New Zealand Chardonnay Chenin Blanc from South Africa or Loire White Rhône blends from California or Rhône Rhône producers I mentioned: E. Guigal, Chapoutier   2. Then I gift some questions to ask before buying wine as a gift for someone: What do they usually drink? What do they eat? What kind of person are they -- adventuresome or less so? 3. Finally I hit on gift ideas: Waiter's corkscrew Sparkling wine stopper Foil cutter Vacuvin or just the stoppers Wine accessories gift set Jane Anson's "Wine Revolution: The World's Best Organic, Biodynamic, and Craft Wines" Oz Clarke books, including: "Grapes and Wines", which I love as an easy reference book A Wine for Normal People gift certificate! An Amazon gift certificate (where they can buy the stuff above, or starting in January you can send them to my winefornomalpeople.com and link to these and more wine gifts I recommend!) In this episode we chat about restaurants and places she particularly enjoyed and why she recommends them. She also explains why you should not let yourself be intimidated by difference and that French people are a real and eager to get to know you and share their culture with you. Life in the Lubéron is simple and satisfying in ways that will surprise you. [5'17] The village of Ansouis, do you say the "s" or not? [6'17] Heather introduces herself and why she and her husband spent two months in the Lubéron. This village was a good place to experience full immersion. [7'51] How did you pick this lovely place in particular? [8'25] One criteria was a walk-able town. [9'55] The difference between a "maison de village" and a "lottissement" . [10'20] A long-long time ago in many "maison de village", the ground floor is where the animals used to live and people setup their house above the barn. [11'26] On a different trip they stayed in Mérindol where they farmed silkworms. [12'26] Let's locate Ansouis and the Lubéron on a map. [14'25] Scenic drive between Lourmarain and Gordes [15'46] Books by Peter MaillePeter Maille made the Lubéron famous in the English-speaking world. What makes this area so charming. [17'58] Why is France so scenic? There is a reason for this! [19'22] Great books and movies about the Lubéro: Manon des Sources, Jean de Florette, and other books by Marcel Pagnol. Another good one is Les lettres de mon moulin (a collection of short stories, including "le curé de cucugnan" that Annie mentions). Uncorked is the book we'll be reviewing soon on the podcast. You join the Join Us in France Book Group on Goodreads if you're a reader. [21'57] Playing "pétanque", the bacci-like game. [24'54] The unspoken yet very rules rules pertaining to drinking wine in France (and alcohol in general). [25'15] Cooking with local foods: duck, rabbit, oysters. Eating outside by candle-light. Buying Paella and Rotisserie chicken at the market. [29'31] Getting to know local markets when you stay for a while, and finding the ones that are more to your liking. [30'34] Pizzeria Nonni in Lourmarin. [31'] Some of the funny things that happened to them in France. Grocery shopping in Pertuis and how French grocery carts are different in France. How you should weigh fruits and vegetables before you get to the checkout. Feeling like a dumb American tourist. [36'] Don't be intimidated by difference, try things even if it's new and strange! [36'38] Attending a celebration  in the village and misunderstanding how village celebrations work. French guys trying to get the American visitors drunk. [41'45] Spectacular fireworks display and getting to know people in the village because they weren't afraid to attend this village celebration. [42'] French people can come across as unfriendly because they don't smile at you on the streets and they don't talk to you on the streets. [43'16] Bring your own bags at the grocery store! Using bio-degradable bags for loose produce. [45'22] How did you find the house you were staying in? [46'47] What are places you visited that you recommend? L'Art Glacier near Ansouis Château la Dorgonne in La Tour d'Aigues and the way they do the visit is original and delightful, they send their two dogs along and you can see the vines and the olive trees Château Constantin now owned by William Chase in Lourmarin Hiking in the Lubéron following path markers Mushrooming Gorges de Regalons near Mérindol (walk through a crevasse, many caves too, you can come up on the top of the mountain if you keep going long enough) The scenic town of Gordes with art galeries Vacqueyras and Gigondas, great places for wine, not as well-known as Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Vacqueyras has a great wine cooperative where you can buy the wine on tap [50'] Americans may think that French people are fancy when it comes to wine, but we're actually not for the most part. French people don't drink wine at the wrong time of day, but it doesn't matter if you drink it out of a plastic jug. [60'] In Vacqueyras you will see the street lined with big "platane"(plane) trees and the Café du cours (not "coeur" as I said on the show) where they have a great duck barbecue dish. [61'] Pizza trucks are dangerous in France! [62'] Vietnamese food in La Tour d'Aigues, La Perle de Jade, they make great Vietnamese hot pot or fondue [64'] Les Calenques de Cassis which are more difficult that it seems they should be. [65'] Soccer match in Marseille where the fans are extremely intense: the sing, they chant, they dance, you can't hear the person next to you talking. [66'] Camargue to see the flamingo, the horses, the salt bays. [67'] Cucuron is a delightful little town with a great market—funny name, it sounds like "rounded behind" in little French kid parlance. [68'] Little wine bar called in Mérindol La Cave à Aimé. [72'] Fontaine de Vaucluse, natural pool that floods the area around in the Spring, but it's a dreamy beautiful blue the rest of the year. There is also a nice market there and the town is lovely too. [75'] Bonnieux, it's along the Gordes drive and it's worth a stop. You can drive almost all the way to the top and then walk, there are beautiful trees, it's a lovely place to stop for a picnic or stop at a restaurant. It's steep and it overlooks the valley, so it is picturesque. [77'] Roussillon and the red rocks. It's a pleasant town to walk through, it's a lovely place for a hike because it's so different from other places in France or even in the Lubéron. Don't just go through the town, but do hike around. There is a place in the city where you can pay an entry fee, but you can see the same things on other hiking paths. [79'] Abbey de Sénanque, the most photographed lavender fields in Provence, the products the monks make there are wonderful, truly potent lavender products. The right time of year to see the lavender fields in bloom is late June to mid-July. [81'] The light and scents of the Lubéron are what make it special. The environment there is unlike the rest of France. You get the sequedas, the dry air, lavender, thyme, rosemary, that grow wild, and when you step on them as you hike you get wonderful sensations. That's why Van Gogh and Cézanne painted there, the light is gorgeous there. The Rhone Valley lies in southeast France.  From the town of Vienne in the north to Avignon in the south the Rhone River runs south for roughly 120 miles.  The Rhone Valley is actually two valleys with Syrah being the main varietal grown in the north.  In the southern Rhone region the king grape is Grenache, which is usually blended with Syrah, Mouvedre, Cinsault and Carignan. On this podcast we review five Cotes Du Rhones and two Cru wines from the villages of Gigondas & St. Joseph.  Once again we convened a panel of tasters to help us evaluate the wines.  Open up a bottle of Rhone wine and join us as we explore the rich red wines of the Rhone Valley.
