The Democratic National Convention is being held in Chicago this week and many Americans will be re-introduced to V.P. Kamala Harris when she delivers her speech on Thursday night. I have a background in local Democratic politics and have always been a strong supporter of women running for office. Earlier this summer, we held in-person workshops for women who are running in the Central Florida area where we helped them with their public speaking and storytelling. It was a lot of fun and it showed me once again how powerful someone's personal story is! In this episode, I'm joined by two of those women, Jennifer Adams, who's running for U.S. Congress in Florida's District 7, and Sarah Henry, who's running for Florida State House in District 38. We talk about: Why they decided to run for office and the importance of asking women to run What it's like being a female candidate and having a public voice and presence Their stump speeches and how they tailor them based on the audience The surge of support and enthusiasm for V.P. Kamala Harris's campaign for President and what that tells us about the importance of authenticity The lessons they've learned about being themselves vs. trying to be someone they thought they should be What they learned about storytelling, taking up space, and messaging from the workshops we did with then The importance of donating to women candidates (find local women that you can donate to!) Thursday, May 25th, 2023 Representative Anna Eskamani serves on behalf of Florida's 42nd district of Orange County in the state House of Representatives. We discuss her victories at the ballot box and her work to represent her constituents. Her campaign slogan is “Working for you. Fighting for us.” When serving in the minority of the Florida state legislature, you only pass legislation by working across the aisle. Anna is a firm believer in calling people in before calling them out, and on finding common ground on issues of good government. Her formula for success is showing up for people by focusing on real life issues, like on tax fairness, versus the manufactured culture war debates. A Florida State House hopeful is not a college graduate but she has gone out of her way to claim otherwise. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been making the rounds on liberal media since her win over Democratic incumbent Joseph Crowley Her statements have been repeatedly fact-checked and now the left-leaning Washington Post has debunk many of her common claims. The Democratic National Committee in June quietly passed a resolution that banned fossil fuel companies from donating to the party but guess what they are doing now. Rallies in Charlottesville this past Saturday were supposed to be about opposing the rise of white supremacy, but Antifa showed up early and well we'll talk about it. Join us on Friday, May 8, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. for the next edition of our podcast, America's Community Voices Network, onBLOGTALKRADIO.COM, with our special guest the newly elected representative for the Florida State House of Representatives, District 61, Mr. Edwin Narain. Since his election to office during the last election cycle, the freshmen democrat has made his debut in the Florida State House with great distinction. He was the first freshman ever elected to lead theminority caucus (unprecedented) and he was the chief sponsor of a bill that was passed into law to provide critical training to police officers to recognize the symptoms of a diabetic episode. Known as "The Arthur Green Act," this critical bill was sponsored my Rep. Narain after Mr. Green's untimely during a traffic stop in which he was suffering a hypoglycemic episode. The police officers, through no fault of their own, did not recognize the symptoms and attempted to arrest Mr. Green for erratic and DUI driving. Mr. Green collapsed and died in what was at the least a highly preventable death.
