Brian committed himself to practising contemplative spiritual disciplines every day for a month. Here's what happened... Psychological studies suggest that certain personalities are better suited to hearing God's voice than others. Those who are “feelers” rather than thinkers seem to be pre-disposed to experiencing the Spirit in sensory ways. So what does that mean for the thinkers and the intellectuals among us? On this episode of the show, we're talking Spirit experiences and analytical thinkers with someone who appreciates both. Dr Brian Ross is an associate professor at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary in California who hails from the Anabaptist tradition but regularly ministers at a wide range of churches. In Brian's words, he's always "lived in his head," but things changed when he began practising some of the contemplative spiritual disciplines. You'll love this conversation, particularly if you're a “thinker” rather than a "feeler”! Brian brings some wonderful wisdom and insight to the topic. In this conversation, you'll learn about: Brian's journey to faith from a broken home, through a nihilistic and depressing season as a teenager to his decision to follow Jesus and enter pastoral ministry. Brian's angst in discovering that the church was not always a place where people were naturally oriented to answering his questions. Relating to God as an intellectual: I've always lived in my head by nature, but this doesn't mean my walk with God isn't practical or personal. God as an incarnational being meets us where we are - that's where God has met me. Sometimes you might hear people say things like Christianity is not a philosophy - it's a relationship and I know what people mean by that, but I would always say, “what's wrong with it as a philosophy?” because I find that compelling. Brian's initiation into the spiritual disciplines and the Spirit encounters that followed. Brian committed himself to practising the disciplines - such as contemplative prayer, meditation and sitting in silence - every day for a month. He explains what happened: Nothing changed for a while. Then after a few weeks, I began to have experiences I'd never had before… that I do not have words or categories for. I found them often beautiful and compelling… So, this is what Pentecostals and Charismatics talk about! Brian's reflections on the variety of personalities God has created and how we all experience God differently. Since we all reflect God's likeness, we should expect that we would relate to God in different ways. For example, through acts of service, doing justice, intellectual enquiry, participation in nature and prayer or worship experiences. The need to incorporate all aspects of our intellect to know the fullness of God including rational discourse and deep thinking. Indeed all the early church leaders related to the Greek thinkers of their time. The impact of spiritual experiences on Brian's life… These experiences that are often beyond words are a visceral reminder that there's much more to reality than what we see or understand or control. Some advice for those who haven't had those Spirit experiences. Subscribe to God Conversations with Tania Harris and never miss an episode! About Brian Brian A. Ross, DMin (George Fox University), is Associate Professor of Pastoral Ministries at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary in California. A twenty-six-year ministry veteran, he has served as a: youth pastor, church planter, Senior Pastor, interim teaching pastor, church planting coach, preaching coach, pastoral search consultant, and outreach/strategy consultant. What makes Anabaptist history radical, and how does it shape who we are today? In this episode, we're joined by Valerie Rempel, former dean of Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary and a trusted historian in MB circles, to explore the significance of Anabaptism's 500th anniversary.Valerie walks us through the bold decisions of early Anabaptists, the importance of believer's baptism, and the challenges of allegiance to Christ above all else. We also reflect on how these radical beginnings continue to influence our faith, from a commitment to discipleship to navigating today's cultural and political complexities. Whether you're familiar with Anabaptist history or hearing these stories for the first time, this episode will inspire you to think deeply about what it means to live as a follower of Jesus.

If we're honest, many of us don't really know what to do with the Old Testament. We know it's important, but some of the stories are hard for us to understand in our modern American evangelical context. In this week's episode, we talk with Dr. Tim Geddert about his new book "The Beginning of the Story: Understanding the Old Testament in the Story of Scripture." Tim taught New Testament courses at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary for 37 years. Although Tim has focused on the New Testament in his career, his new book tackles common questions and misconceptions that Christians have about the Old Testament. He says properly understanding the Old Testament is crucial for understanding the New Testament and Jesus' teachings. Tim discusses several challenging aspects of the Old Testament, such as violence and war, Old Testament law, and the reward/punishment narrative. He emphasizes the importance of reading the Old Testament through the lens of Jesus and the New Testament writers. We hope today's episode and Tim's book will be helpful tools to better understand the Old Testament as an essential part of the biblical story.
Guest Preacher, Noemi Vega Quiñones, continues our Fall series by preaching from Exodus 16:11-30 about God's vision for Sabbath- a vision that is rooted in intimate knowing and trust. How might the "elder story" presented in Exodus 16 invite us into Yahweh's vision for collective liberation and flourishing, centered in rest? And how does that vision connect to the Indigenous vision of buen vivir, reminding us that collective care is not just for humans but for the entire community of creation? ------ GUEST PREACHER BIO: Noemi Vega Quiñones was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and migrated to the United States when she was five with her mother and two younger siblings. She is a Mustang Fellow at Southern Methodist University, an adjunct professor at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary, and is currently conducting her field research in the Central Coast of California where she grew up. Noemi hopes to contribute to buen vivir en conjunto with her communities.
It's part 2 of our conversation with Dr. Mark Baker. We are talking about becoming a centered-set church. What is that? Most churches are bounded or fuzzy, but its the churches that are centered that see the greatest transformation. How do we know that? Because that's what we did! The question is: are sinners welcome at your church? Yes, we call people to repentance, but when does that happen? Do you require them to behave before they belong? Believe? What's the order? Do they have to look and sound like everybody else before they are accepted? What are the standards? Who is in and who is out? Is there room for a process? What happens when someone sins? What about the person who is in sin and just starting to come to church and wants to learn? And what about the person who is considered an insider but whose personal life is a complete mess? What do we do? What is more important: believing? behaving? belonging? Which should come first? And what does that matter? Our guide in our journey today is Dr. Mark Baker. Mark is the J.B. Toews Chair Professor of Mission and Theology at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary and the author of Centered-Set Church: Discipleship and Community Without Judgmentalism (Downers Grove, IL: IVP Academic, 2021) Mark helps us to examine what he calls three different approaches to church. Borrowing from the missiologist Paul Hiebert, he helps us to see what is considered a "bounded set," "fuzzy set," and a "centered" set approach to church. This is a conversation about where you live in the everyday-its about how we judge and shame others, and what the best approach is to ensure flexibility with the process while honoring the purity of obedience. Welcome to episode eighty-six of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I'm excited to be re-joined by Dr. Mark Baker. Mark is Professor of Mission and Theology at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary. Mark is an alum of Wheaton University, has a master's degree from the New College for Advanced Christian Studies (Berkely) and a PhD in Theology and Ethics from Duke. Mark has written extensively in theology and ethics, but the primary focus of our conversation is his most recent book Freedom from Religiosity and Judgmentalism: Studies in Paul's Letter to the Galatians – part of the Luminaire Studies Series published by Kindred. I had a conversation with Mark a few months ago about his book Centered-Set Church: Discipleship and Community Without Judgmentalism, his new book applies some of those insights into reading Galatians, and the result is a really thoughtful and fresh reading of that great Epistle. It's a great book and a rich conversation.

Welcome to episode sixty-five of New Creation Conversations. I'm excited to be joined in today's conversation by Dr. Mark D. Baker. Mark is Professor of Mission and Theology at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary. Mark is an alum of Wheaton University, has a master's degree from the New College for Advanced Christian Studies (Berkely) and a PhD in Theology and Ethics from Duke. Mark has written extensively in theology and ethics, but the primary focus of our conversation is his most recent book – published by IVP Academic – Centered-Set Church: Discipleship and Community Without Judgmentalism.A few years ago, I was asked to speak at the regional gathering for the Church of the Nazarene and in that message I shared an often-repeated story about an American rancher and sheepherder who got the chance to spend time with other ranchers and sheepherders in the outback of Australia and New Zealand. He noticed quickly that they didn't have many fences keeping the herd or the flock in place. When he asked about it, the herders from down-under remarked, “We learned decades ago that if you dig really good wells the sheep and cattle won't wander from them, and you don't need as many fences.” In these very divisive times, both inside and outside the church, I have grown to love that simple illustration and return to it often to think about how we might work for unity within the very diverse Body of Christ. Mark's research and writing on “Centered-Set Church” takes the beauty of that story and fills it out thoughtfully and helpfully. As readers of the book (and listeners to our conversation) will discover, the challenge to creating a “centered-set” community is not just what Mark will call “divided set” ways of identifying as a people, but also the ways “fuzzy-set” forms of identification also become problematic. It is a very helpful and timely book, and a very relevant conversation. So, thanks for leaning into this week's New Creation Conversation.

Dr. Angela N. Parker has a Ph.D. in Bible, Culture, and Hermeneutics (New Testament focus) from Chicago Theological Seminary. Angela’s book entitled Bodies, Violence, and Emotions: A Womanist Study of σῶμα (body) and πτῶμα (fallen body) in the Gospel of Mark is currently under contract with Wipf & Stock. Reading through the lens of womanist and postcolonial thought, Angela’s work addresses the issue of bodies falling as a result of imperial violence in the Gospel of Mark. The issue of fallen bodies is especially important for contemporary Christian communities who witness police violence against black and brown bodies. Prior to receiving her Ph.D., Angela earned the Master of Theological Studies degree from Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Shaw University, a historically black institution in Raleigh, North Carolina. This is a conversation with scholar and author Matthew Bates. We talk about a little word with a big meaning: pistis. This Greek word is often translated "faith" or "faithfulness" but we discuss how it might be better to translate it as "allegiance." Matthew W. Bates is Associate Professor of Theology at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois. Bates holds a Ph.D. from The University of Notre Dame in theology with a specialization is New Testament and early Christianity. His books include Salvation by Allegiance Alone (Baker Academic), The Birth of the Trinity (Oxford University Press, 2015), and The Hermeneutics of the Apostolic Proclamation (Baylor University Press, 2012). He also hosts OnScript, a popular biblical studies podcast. In this series, Kurt will explore Paul's worldview concerning God and creation. What did Paul have in the background? How did this affect how he would think about Adam and Eve? Then, we will end our series looking at Romans 5 and its compatibility with evolution (or lack there of). This series explores Paul's vision for how women fit into the announcement that Jesus is Lord. It argues that Paul was an egalitarian, believing that women should be included (without distinction) in leadership roles within the church and home. Paul did not believe that women were "the same" as men, but that they equally offer gifts to the community as leaders, teachers, pastors, bishops, etc. This series will demonstrate why Paul was pro-women. This is an interview with new author, Alice Connor. Her book, Fierce: Women of the Bible and Their Stories of Violence, Mercy, Bravery, Wisdom, Sex, and Salvation, seeks to excavate the neglected stories of women in biblical tradition. Walter Brueggemann says that... "The “old, old story” concerns “All the king’s men” or “All the president’s men.” The “new, new song” is about all the women who belong to the coming realm of liberty and justice. Alice Connor is a skillful artist who knows how to transpose old, old stories into new, new songs. In her lively imagination the old old stories do not stay old. They are powerfully and accessibly new and contemporary for our time and place. Connor knows that “feminism” is about power. She shows how these ancient stories are filled with powerful futures." We chat about Paul's church ladies and other biblical themes, as well as the journey from idea to book. Catch up with Alice at her website: Fierce Ass Women. In this series of occasional episodes, Kurt discusses some practical tools for learning biblical Greek on your own. You don't have to attend seminary or enter a "classics" program to learn this language. You do need a plan. In this first episode, Kurt maps out what he thinks is the most accessible approach to learning Greek, if you are a self determined learner. It won't be easy. You will have to build Greek into your life. Perhaps build out appointments with Greek that you keep nearly legalistically :-) But it will be worth it. In this episode, Kurt gave an inside look at William Mounce's Greek resources in his 'Basics of Biblical Greek' series. Kurt recommends going 'all in' and purchasing the Basics of Biblical Greek Pack, which includes: the BBG textbook, workbook, flashcard set, Get an A! study guide, vocabulary audio CD, and full chapter lectures DVD. *For just the book: BBG *For the workbook: Workbook *For the entire course: BBG Pack *Also, Kurt forgot to mention, but the BBG Pack works great with the free course that the author, Mounce, offers on his website here: Greek 1 Course. Utilize his free vocab software, built into the class format, called "Flashworks"!!!! *Other tips include carving out time in your schedule and mapping out a plan to go through each chapter in a reasonable amount of time. If this is your "second shot" at Greek, you may be able to go through this book quicker than the average first time student. To "refresh" your Greek might take two months, where to learn Greek for the first time might take closer to 4-6 months (or less, depending on the time you can invest). *Also, Kurt highly recommends the Sing and Learn New Testament Greek CD resource as a companion to this curriculum pack. *Lastly, I mentioned a "conversational" learning method as well which I will return to in future episodes. But the best option of this approach of self-learners is Conversational Koine. This episode asks the question: What is "covenantal nomism?" It is possible you have never heard of this phrase before, but for anyone studying Paul, it is crucial that you have a basic understanding of this concept as it pertains to second temple Judaism. *Download the Guide (This a free book buying guide for last minute Christmas shoppers!)* This is the final episode in this series. In one hour (a long episode!) you will get an immersion into the book of Revelation, including how to deal with the question of violence! The end of the world. The end of the ages. The rapture. The Great 7 Year Tribulation. The Anti-Christ. The second coming. All of these themes come out of various versions of Christian theology. Some of them were embraced by Paul. Many of them would seem absurd to him. In The End Times in Paul and Others, Kurt Willems examines Paul's "end times" theology, seeking to understand his own expectations of the Second Coming through a historical lens. Then, Kurt compares various other New Testament authors' perspectives on the end as well. Do they line up? Does Paul envision a future tribulation and a rapture? What about Jesus? Revelation? And others? If you are tired of end times madness but want to know what the historical Paul believed and taught, this series is for you. But it doesn't stop there, in an uncharacteristic move for The Paulcast, we will devote full episodes to other relevant texts from outside of the Pauline epistles! This special edition episode of The Paulcast is a sermon that Kurt gave at Pangea (Seattle, WA) the Sunday after the 2016 Elections. He looks at the way social media and life filter us from authenticity and God's glory. His texts come out of Exodus and 2 Corinthians as he explores Paul and unveiled Christianity. It is not a "historical" or "theological" episode, per se, but more of a pastoral approach with those scholastic things running in the background. In this episode, Greg Boyd chats with Kurt Willems about spiritual warfare in Paul and others. This is a pastoral and theological conversation, more so than an issue focused only on the historical Paul. But, from time to time, these conversations are fun as well! Paul didn't just sit around and pontificate lofty theological ideas from a chamber flowing with the finest wines and grains of abundance. Not even close. Paul, although an intellectual, was a practitioner. For him, theology is always practical. In Paul's short letter to Philemon, he challenges power structures of the day by contending for peace between a slave owner (Philemon) and a runaway slave (Onesimus). According to our friends at The Global Immersion Project, peacemaking in the way Jesus involves several practices: SEE, IMMERSE, and CONTEND—with the dream of eventual restoration. In this letter, Paul has clearly taken time to SEE the humanity of both of these men, he has IMMERSED in their stories, and now must contend for the life of Onesimus. This letter is peacemaking 101, folks! So good! In light of the current challenges we see in social media land, family relationships, and church dynamics in the aftermath of the Orlando mass shooting of 49+ LGBTQ persons, peacemaking couldn't be more relevant today. Listen along as we learn from Paul how to enter spaces of conflict. This episode is sponsored by Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary. In this special edition of The Paulcast, Kurt explores a topic that is on the hearts and minds of many people in the aftermath of the horrific shooting that took place in Orlando. 50 lives were lost. 49 lives were lost because of one thing: their identity. LGBTQ persons continue to struggle to find equal footing in our society, and this tragedy is another reminder of how far our culture has to go to make a safer and more humanizing world. Questions are often raised, during times like this, about how the Scriptures speak to issues pertaining to sexuality. In this episode of The Paulcast, Kurt explores the Roman vision of sexuality and virtue and how Paul confronted such ideals of hierarchy with a better way: the way of love. Is Paul homophobic? Doubtful. Was Paul speaking to issues of same-sex practices that are the same as what LGBTQ folks advocate for today as blessed before God in the context of covenantal marriage? That is a "debatable matter." What isn't up for debate, however, is Paul's insistence that Christ-followers of differing convictions belong at the same table. Without solving the "who is right?" question, Kurt offers some observations about gender in the ancient world that 'traditionalists' and 'progressives' tend to interpret differently.
