There are a lot of people talking about burnout, but most of them are actually only teaching basic stress management strategies. Today's guest, Cait Donovan calls bulshit on most of what is being called burnout prevention and recovery. A licensed acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine practitioner turned keynote speaker, author, trauma informed burnout recovery coach and host of the wildly popular podcast, “Fried: The Burnout Podcast” has become a good friend over the past couple of years. I have so much respect for her no-BS approach, that blends personal experience and scientific inquiry, with a passion for addressing burnout on both individual and societal levels. The reality is that burnout is not a character defect, nor it is a badge of honor. We live in a culture that puts all of us at risk for burnout and the women who listen to this podcast are at an even higher risk than most, for reasons that Cait and I will get into in this interview. Here are a few of the highlights before we dig right in: 1️⃣ Burnout prevention ≠ burnout recovery: Cait Donovan challenges the traditional notion of burnout prevention, arguing that it focuses too much on stress management practices. Instead, she emphasizes the importance of burnout recovery, which requires understanding and addressing individual factors that contribute to burnout.2️⃣ Unique protection factors: Every individual has their own set of burnout protection factors. These factors could range from having a strong support system, regular vacations, engaging in hobbies, to even embracing change. Identifying and incorporating these factors into our lives is crucial in preventing burnout.3️⃣ Burnout is not solely caused by workplace factors. Other aspects such as cultural, health, family history, and environmental factors can also contribute to burnout risk. By recognizing and addressing these underlying factors, we can mitigate burnout and improve our overall well-being.Want to get more of Cait into your life? Today's guest is Cait Donovan. Cait Donovan is a Keynote speaker, one of New York City's leading burnout experts, host of “Fried – The Burnout Podcast,” author of the book "The Bouncebackability Factor", and an acupuncturist with a master's degree in Chinese medicine.  This was a great conversation about burnout, resentment, and boundaries. We discussed: Feeling not good enough. 2:00 The biggest component of burnout is feelings of not being enough. What does burnout mean to you? 4:18 Burnout is when the pilot light in the body goes too low and there is not enough energy to sustain normal functioning, rejuvenation, etc. The feeling of not being enough is part of burnout, and being too much is also part of it. The difference between burnout and stress. 9:21 Stress and burnout are a continuum. Burnout is the far end of chronic unmitigated stress, while stress is healthy and good when it is not chronic. Resentment is the number one tool for keeping yourself out of burnout. It is one of the main tools that she teaches people. More on resentment If you pay close attention to resentments objectively, you will notice that each and every zone of your life where your boundaries are being crossed. Boundaries make you more generous and more forgiving. 17:00 When boundaries are in place, the places that you enjoy being generous are available to you and you can use them. What does it mean to honor your calendar? 19:03 The importance of honoring appointments and paying yourself back What resentment feels like to Cait How to set boundaries when you feel resentment. 20:48 When she feels resentful, it is because she is over giving and feeling like she is doing the same thing. When there is a mismatch in a relationship and resentment is building up, ask yourself a few questions to sort through what is really going on. For some of us and even relationships, we bounce before sending a boundary because we are afraid of setting a boundary. How to avoid burnout? 26:04 Finding the balance between bringing resources in and only releasing the resources that are available. If one does not learn in one area of their life, they can leave whatever relationship or job they want and take it with them to another place. What is the first step to identifying your resentments? 28:26 Identifying resentments is one of the first steps when people come to work with you, because they are the signposts.   Here's a link to Cait's mini-course on resentments!  https://www.caitdonovan.com/store      Resources Mentioned: Sign up for the Webinar here: August 21st, 4PM Eastern: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Yg17bBbCQEeBIz_Y8x4Z3Q August 29th, 12PM Eastern: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sUrUAn_0SNyNivUFOg9I5w   Join the Advocate with Elegance membership!   Stay Connected with Heather: To schedule a call with Heather, click here  To follow Heather on Instagram, click here To subscribe to Heather's newsletter, click here To request a transcript of this episode, email: operations@heatherhansenpresents.com     ____________ Disclaimer: The Elegant Warrior Podcast is presented solely for educational and entertainment purposes. Why am I so tired? Why am I so resentful toward my patients? Every time I got a phone call. I was like what do people want from me? Like I couldn't even and it sounds I say these things with like full knowledge of how awful it sounds for a healthcare practitioner to feel resentful toward their patients. I understand what it sounds like. I'm telling you that it's embarrassing, but also the truth. I didn't realize what I was going through was burnout until like six or seven years later.11:50 But our brains are designed or designed to find the thing that we find pleasurable, get it as much as we can, and then become complacent and want something more. That is literally how our brains are designed. And originally, that helped us travel further. It helped us intermingle genes with further, right, like tribes. And because we were spread out because we were searching for something more because we were pushing our boundaries. 15:52 And the more we start respecting other people's calendars, the more our calendars will start to be respected. But at the end of the day, no one respects your calendar, if you don't.21:07 The emotional side to me is, if anything changes in your day, last minute, you absolutely lose your mind. So if one thing gets added to your to do list, or one person asks you one additional question, or you get one email that you weren't expecting to get, it throws everything off completely, you have no emotional space for flexibility and responding and reacting because you are so close to the edge, that no matter what, it'll just throw you right off.22:54 On top of that, I see massive amounts of resentment. When you're burnt out. Everything feels unfair. I'm doing all these things for all these people. And I'm not getting the gratitude, I'm not getting the praise, I'm not getting the speaking slot, I'm not getting the I'm all these things, and I'm not getting what I deserve in return.23:37 And then there's a host of physical symptoms, headaches, anxiety, gut issues, inability to sleep, low libido, foggy brain, neurological symptoms, there's a whole host of symptoms that could that you know, the kind that you go to your doctor and your doctor does your bloodwork and he's like, everything's fine. And you're like, it's not it's not I'm not fine. I'm not fine over here.30:07 So if you are afraid that you're burnt out, you are burnt out.Connect with Cait Donovan:Instagram: Cait_DonovanLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/caitdonovanspeaks/https://friedtheburnoutpodcast.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/friedtheburnoutpodcasthttps://caitdonovan.comSpeaking Inquiry: https://www.caitdonovan.com/speakingResentful Journal: https://www.caitdonovan.com/resentment-journalWhere to Start If You Think You Might Be Burnt Out & Want to Recover: https://www.caitdonovan.com/blog/what-episodes-of-fried-do-i-listen-to-first-for-burnout-recoveryCait's Book Recommendation: The Body Keeps the Score via Amazon: https://a.co/d/iPUUxfuConnect with Nancy:Instagram: https://instagram.com/nancysurakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancysurak/Website: www.nancysurak.comShe's Wild Sound Production by:Luke Surak, Surak Productions: surakproductions@gmail.com

I'm so excited about my guest, Cait Donovan, today! Cait speaks about burnout in an entirely different way, one that is more forgiving and filled with grace. As you may know, I have already experienced one round of burnout. I had no idea what was happening to me, but I thought it was entirely my fault. I carried the guilt and weight of the question, “How could I let this happen?” Here's the excellent news. From my conversation with Cait, I learned that this might be a bit of our genetics, upbringing, living and work environment, and choices. And if you've experienced burnout before, you know how difficult it is to heal. Starting with a dose of self-compassion is a beautiful place to begin. During my conversation with Cait, we discussed: 1. The origin of burnout and why looking at the last 3-5 years of history before a bout of burnout can share some clues 2. What burnout is and isn't according to the medical community 3. The symptoms of burnout 4. How repeat burnout is a real thing 5. What you can do to heal from burnout proactively. Cait Donovan — burnout expert, speaker, author, and host of “Fried - The Burnout Podcast,” — joins Dayna and Gabe to discuss burnout, boundaries, speaker burnout (yes, it's a thing!), and how you can take better care of yourself right now. As a speaker, you may find that you're overexerting yourself and saying "Yes!" to every speaking gig you get asked to do because you don't want to miss out on anything or decrease momentum. However, you have to know when is the right time to say yes to a speaking gig and when to say no. Cait talks in this episode about how resentment is your superpower, and if you're feeling resentful about a situation or a request, then it may be better for your well-being not to take it. We also discuss evaluations and how to deal with those negative comments that may hit us so hard and get us down or in our heads. The key is knowing yourself and recognizing what you need to bounce back from the negative feedback, especially if you have another speech or presentation to give soon! Burnout is not new, but it's a big buzzword these days because it's affecting so many people, especially as we navigate through COVID-19. We hope this episode encourages everyone who is dealing with burnout or feeling the effects of burnout to talk to someone and get the help they need. Cait is so real and vulnerable, and we appreciate her sharing tips for how we can better take care of ourselves right now - as speakers and as human beings.
