He brings to the conversation a wealth of experience in coaching, training, and high-performance team development. Stephan has spent over 15 years exploring the fundamental question: Why does coaching work? Join Ashanti and Stephan as they unravel the concept of psychological safety, its relevance in today's complex and global workplaces, and how it can be a game-changer for leaders striving to enhance team performance. Stephan shares insights into the challenges leaders face in creating psychological safety and emphasizes the importance of measuring it within your team. “So what you're pointing to really is the courage that leaders require. I would also closely couple courage with vulnerability. As a leader, we need to demonstrate vulnerability, as in I don't have all the answers. I am not perfect. I'm willing and able to learn, wanting to learn, and so then we coupled that courage and that vulnerability with curiosity.” Episode Highlights: ● How can we define Psychological Safety ● What are the links between Psychological Safety and High Performance ● The need for leaders to demonstrate Courage, Vulnerability, and Curiosity About : {Stephan Wiedner} Stephan Wiedner is an entrepreneur whose mission is to abolish apathy in the workplace. "Psychological safety is a belief held by an individual about the extent they feel they can speak up, say what's on their mind, express concerns, even admit mistakes, in a team setting without fear of reprimand or without fear of some social consequence; or maybe we don't want to speak up because we don't want to seem like we're oppositional to the status quo." Stephan Wiedner from Vancouver, Canada, is a certified Psychological Safety coach. Sixteen years ago Stephan founded Noomii.com, now the web's largest network of professional coaches, with thousands of coaches in hundreds of cities across North America and internationally, including Australia. Stephan also founded Zarango.com, a flight simulator for business interpersonal skills, where Leaders practice responding to challenging team scenarios. We are hearing more and more about a topic that I am quite passionate about - 'Psychological Safety', and of which I am aware is a challenge for many introverted leaders in the work environment. First coined in 1999 by author and Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School, she states that “psychological safety means an absence of interpersonal fear. When psychological safety is present, people are able to speak up with work-relevant content". Today's conversation with psychological safety expert, Stephan Wiedner, using his own insights, puts the concept into perspective and further discusses how companies can create a culture that lets people feel that their voice matters, leverages people's differences and in turn enables each individual's unique skills and talents to be valued and utilised. “It's like following a leader off of a cliff… just because they said jump, you jump. You want to be able to have that freedom to be able to push back and disagree and think about it.” -Stephan Wiedner It isn't easy to speak up in the workplace. As with all things worth getting right, balance is required. To navigate safely between creating dictatorial workplaces where only the leader's thought matters, or free-for-alls where so many points, thoughts and ideas are put forward, finding direction becomes impossible. He has spent his career educating people on the value of understanding and creating psychologically safe environments in the workplace. How do you measure psychological safety and the impact it makes on your organization?Stephan Wiedner is a psychological safety expert whose career has focused on developing sustainable high-performance leaders, teams and organizations. His passion for unleashing the collective potential of people has led him to be one of the co-founders of noomi.com, the world's largest network of independent life coaches. He's also developed a software called skillsetter.com, and is the CEO of Zarango.com.Today's discussion talks about Stephan's transition from the well-calculated and systematic world of construction management, to the complex world of understanding human behavior through coaching. This led him to starting Noomi.com as a platform for coaches to offer their services, and at the same time, for individuals to find the right coach that suits their needs. He then further niched down to psychological safety which emerged from a need to quantify the impact of coaching on organizations. He then observed how psychological safety directly correlates with high-performance teams, and this is the most common theme in his coaching engagements.Psychological safety is about creating a speak-up culture - an environment where people feel safe to speak up, to admit mistakes, and to ask for help. This is where the perceived benefit of speaking up is greater than the fear. Mick and Stephan also talk about how to measure psychological safety and how to maintain a culture of respect through feedback. Stephan then talks about skillsetter.com, which he describes as a flight simulator for interpersonal skills, where you can prepare for turbulent life conditions even before it happens in real life.Listen to this episode to know the benefits of creating a speak-up culture, celebrating diversity, and empowering individuals to contribute to a greater cause.Book References: The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth by Amy Edmondson Radical Candor by Kim ScottSeven Years in Tibet by Heinrich HarrerSocials:Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/swiedner/Zarango: https://zarango.com/Noomi: http://www.noomii.com/Skill Setter: https://www.skillsetter.com/Join us in our mission at The Leadership Project and learn more about our organization here. https://linktr.ee/mickspiers You can purchase a copy of the Mick Spiers bestselling book "You're a Leader, Now What?" as an eBook or paperback at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09ZBKK8XV

From Stephan: Recent tech redundancies will shift the power from the individual back to organisations, who'll require more in-office work and a reduction in salaries. From Dan: The shift from remote to in-office working will vary depending on sector, with different sectors having different needs and expectations of how people come together to work. Tips for facing 2023 From Amy: Every person in an organisation needs to be a keeper of the culture. You need to fail... Yes, I said it. Because failure is the fastest way to success when you're innovating. But it's surprisingly hard to fail. And this is a major problem. Why, you ask? Well, in our service design practice, failure is part of prototyping. You have an idea, you create something, you try it in the real world, learn from what happened, and based on that, improve your solution to repeat this process. See what I did there? You try and learn, that's the key. Trying something, you actually hope that it's going to work out differently than you planned so that you can learn. But when things don't work out as planned, this is often perceived as... failure. And failure isn't what most organizations embrace or celebrate. The truth is that they fail at, well yeah, failing. There are many reasons for this, but maybe the biggest one is a lack of psychological safety. Here's the kicker... Scientific research has proven that the best-performing teams have the highest degree of psychological safety. So how do you grow the appetite for failure in a risk-averse organization that is focused on maintaining the status quo? We explore that question in this week's episode with Stephan Wiedner. Stephan has done a lot of research on this topic and seen many examples of what works and what doesn't. So if you're interested in building a "fail-safe" environment in your organization, then you don't want to miss out on this conversation. One thing that surprised me in this episode was that you can objectively measure the levels of psychological safety. Of course, this is a great tool to show you and your CEO if you're heading in the right direction. Enjoy the conversation, and keep making a positive impact :) - Marc --- [ 1. Stephan Wiedner is today's Expert Insight Interview guest. He is the founder and CEO of Noomii & Zorango. He coaches in hundreds of cities and helps organizations equip their leaders and high potentials with the tools required to navigate. As an experienced coach, he helps to measure what is most important for team effectiveness: Psychological safety. Stephan and Our host John Golden discuss the concept of psychological safety at work.
Psychological safety is made up of a number of tiny interactions. Whether they be Slack messages, meetings, or emails, these forms of communication – and their responses – determine how likely someone is to speak up and share their ideas.Stephan Wiedner is a psychological safety trainer, CEO, and volunteer firefighter. Stephan trains coaches to help create spaces where people feel free to speak up, with the confidence to know they'll be heard.Takeaways from Dan ad Pia Attunement is about making sure everyone is on the right mental frequency, and not just assuming you're on the “correct” setting and everyone else needs to adjust. Focus on those micro moments of communication. Because without taking care of those micro interactions, problems can occur in the macro.
