It's the holiday season—time to relax, reflect, and spend time with loved ones. So, to mark the occasion, we're sharing the full, never-before-heard interview with one of our most exciting guests to date, Professor John Amaechi OBE. Professor John Amaechi is an extraordinary individual with an inspiring journey and impressive credentials. Plus, he's got some very strong opinions on Star Wars and peanut butter—trust us, you'll want to hear this. In this extended, unedited conversation, Leanne and John dive deep into what makes a great leader, the challenges of diversity in leadership roles, and the importance of self-awareness. Key Topics: Leadership vs Management: What sets true leadership apart from management and why this distinction is vital. Diversity & Inclusion: How inclusive leadership impacts business success, and why mediocrity is the real enemy in workplace diversity. The Importance of Self-Awareness: Why great leadership begins with understanding yourself, and how this critical skill can shape your effectiveness as a leader. The Role of Leadership in Society: Why leaders must be responsible for shaping both the culture within their organizations and the wider community. Star Wars & Peanut Butter: John's take on the best Star Wars film (spoiler: it's a good one) and the only acceptable way to eat peanut butter. Yes, we went there. Why You Should Listen: This interview is one for the books. Whether you're a business leader, an aspiring entrepreneur, or just someone looking for a fresh perspective on leadership, John's insights are invaluable. This episode dives into the real, human side of leadership, touching on vulnerability, self-awareness, and why leading with authenticity can be the key to success. "Management is not a destination but the start of a new career path" - Dave Kline Today, we're taking a deep dive into the transformative journey from being a top performer to becoming a stellar manager. Your hosts, Leanne and Al Elliott, welcome Dave Kline, a seasoned expert in the field of management and co-founder of MGMT Accelerator, to shed light on the often underestimated transition that many face in the corporate world. Through engaging anecdotes and personal experiences, including a unique story about the Godfather trilogy, Dave illustrates the challenges and new beginnings that accompany a management position. Leanne and Al navigate the conversation to explore the essence of effective management and leadership, underscoring the importance of setting clear expectations, prioritising effectively, and understanding the intrinsic needs of employees. When you can share stories that demonstrate the value of your product or service—while making your prospective client the hero—it makes what you offer come alive. Patti Pokorchak likes to say, “When people see the value, they will find the money.” Learn how Patti crafts stories that show value in this episode of Sales Reinvented!  Outline of This Episode [1:19] Why is storytelling an important skill? [1:46] Is storytelling something that can be learned?  [2:37] The ingredients of a story that sells [3:18] The attributes of a great storyteller [4:03] Resources to improve your storytelling [5:16] Top three storytelling dos and don'ts [6:25] How to keep your story more concise [7:19] How to make the story about the customer [8:12] When people see the value they find the money Is storytelling something that can be learned?  Patti jokes that she's living proof that you can take a shy geek and turn them into a more outgoing multi-million-dollar sales professional. Storytelling is another tool in her arsenal that she uses and teaches. She believes that if you want to improve, it helps to have a board of advisors and accountability partners so you can practice your stories and get feedback.  The ingredients of a story that sells You have to set the scene. What is the conflict or problem that needs to be resolved? The climax involves turning your potential client into the star of the story. Patti emphasizes that you have to pace yourself and use different tones. Make your story concise so your listener doesn't tune out. The least amount of words makes the maximum impact. Lastly, don't forget to pause at the crucial moment of the story.  Patti breaks down some other useful storytelling dos and don'ts: Make sure the customer is the hero of the story Make sure there's a lesson to be learned Be concise. Keep your story at 2–3 minutes Don't be boring. Don't be long-winded. Don't make it about you.  Listen to find out how Patti makes her stories concise and customer-focused.  When people see the value they find the money Patti was asked to come in to give a dreaded second quote to train a department that was already working with someone they trusted. To prepare for the quote, Patti started asking questions. She asked what the other consultant was charging. It was only $1,000 a day. Patti's target quote was $10,000 a training day. She was 10 times more expensive. But that didn't deter Patti.  Patti had been working for Learning Tree for a few years by then. She was confident that they provided world-class training. So when she gave the quote, she shared how they developed courses, which included beta testing, six months of training, and constant evaluation of trainers. In comparison, their consultant had never taught this course before. Their consultant wasn't qualified in comparison. Did they want their 20 engineers to waste two days of their time on an unproven course? Patti won their business by showing the value of their training. When people see the value, they will find the money. It's why Patti always preaches value.  Resources & People Mentioned Jeanne Robertson Stories Dave Lieber Dallas Morning News The Power of Storytelling to Change the World Connect with Patti Pokorchak Connect on LinkedIn Follow on Twitter Connect With Paul Watts  LinkedIn Twitter  Subscribe to SALES REINVENTED Audio Production and Show notes by PODCAST FAST TRACK https://www.podcastfasttrack.com

What Do You Do?: A Tool for Understanding Yourself Better and Finding Your Unique Path in Life

Andrew Petty is Dying

“What do you do?” We're all familiar with that question. It comes up naturally when we meet someone for the first time in a social setting. Its usual purpose is to learn what someone does for a living to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads.  In this episode, however, we'll REpurpose this old question in a new way to help you know yourself better and discern even more clearly the paths in life for which you're uniquely made. It will become a new tool in your ongoing quest to live YOUR life with guts, gusto, and abandon.    My Answer to “What do you do?” “I seek to understand how we should conduct ourselves in this world to produce the best results with our lives.” That's my most current answer to the repurposed version of the familiar question, “What do you do?” that I'm sharing with you today. It's a description of what I've ALWAYS done, regardless of my age or stage of life or job. It's a description of what I can't NOT do, of what I've always felt compelled to do, of what always calls to me in the midst of whatever else I'm actually doing.  It's not a carefully-crafted mission statement or a statement of intention. It's not aspirational. It's a statement of what IS. It's a statement of who I am and what I do in the world on a fundamental level. I can no more change myself on that fundamental level than I can alter the course of the stars in the sky.  That's the level of insight that we're after with our newly-repurposed version of “what do you do?” My desire for understanding has been evident from an early age–as have been whatever impulses guide you on a fundamental level. One day, when I was a little boy, for example, I paused to examine the dirt, and then asked my mom “what's the dirt doing?” (There may or may not have also been another episode at about the same age where I paused to pray for a caterpillar, then sent it to caterpillar heaven with a decisive stomp of my foot. My mom still hasn't gotten over the shock. She thought I was praying for its welfare, but apparently I was administering its last rites. But I digress…)   What's the Big Deal About Answering “What Do You Do?” for Ourselves? The big benefit of knowing what we do on a fundamental level with this kind of clarity is that it strengthens our sense of who we are and what we're here for. Enlightened and strengthened in these ways, we can then pursue personal and professional paths that align with what we do on a fundamental level. What we do for a living to keep food on the table and a roof over our head can be a natural extension of what we've always done and will always seek to do on the deepest levels of our being.  I'm grateful that what I do for a living IS a natural extension of what I do on the most fundamental level. I've discovered that that marriage between both levels of doing is a self-perpetuating engine of growth, both fed by and feeding the very processes that drive it.    Life is hard enough without the added hardship of persisting in personal and professional paths that don't align with who we really are and what we really do. And the world needs all of us as fully engaged in our unique purposes as we can possibly be. How confident are you in your current answer to “what do you do?”   How to Answer “What Do You Do” for Yourself I've arrived at my current answer to this question through ongoing observation of myself as I move through the world. But that observation has occurred in the grit and grime of real life, not from behind glass with lab coats and clipboards. My conclusions at this point are based upon real-world trial and error, successes and failures. They are the result of countless implementations of my formula for human growth, Insight + Action = Transformation.  My answer is also based upon others' feedback about what they observe in me. I've proactively sought that feedback from family, friends, and professional acquaintances. I've also enlisted resources like coaching and therapy to create the kinds of insights that those kinds of partnerships are especially good at creating.  My answer will continue to evolve, too, as long as I stay engaged in the question and summon the courage to act upon what I learn.  What are one or two observations have you made about yourself so far in life that help you better understand what you do on a fundamental level?    Draft Your First Answer to “What Do You Do?” Today “What do you do?” is a familiar question that you can repurpose in a new way to help you know yourself better and discern even more clearly the paths in life for which you're uniquely made. It takes time and awareness to wield this tool, and all of us are capable of wielding it well if we choose. It takes courage to act upon the insights we gain, forsaking paths that aren't ours in favor of ones that are.   Live YOUR life with guts, gusto, and abandon.  Take a new step in that direction today. Draft your first answer to “what do you do?” Don't white knuckle it, and don't censor or judge yourself. Then, update your answer whenever observations made in the real world generate new depths of insight into what you do. Wash, rinse, repeat.  Remember: You ARE going to die. But you're not dead yet. Luckily, her dad bailed her out. ●Because of this incident, Rosie was under parole for half of her high school life. Life After Arrest●The system doesn't set you up for success. ●However, Rosie still felt lucky. She had a supportive family and probation officer. ●But the stigma of being a troubled kid cannot be avoided. ●Yoga and meditation changed her life during those turbulent times. The Importance of Names●Jessica's last name is of Spanish origin, so a lot of people tend to mispronounce it.●While she doesn't mind her name being mispronounced, she still understands the power pronouncing a name properly has.●On the same note, Rosie's last name is also mispronounced often. But she doesn't feel like she has to correct people for it.The Past Months for Jessica ●Jessica is not an optimist. The year 2021 has been tougher than 2020 for her. ●There's a lot of pressure to go back to normal. But we're still confronted with a lot of problems like a lot of people getting sick and dying. ●We're also facing climate change and political unrest in the middle of the pandemic.●Back in 2019, other astrologers have also predicted that something terrible was coming. ●As an empath and astrologer, the whole situation is stressful for Jessica. This situation must be considered by spiritual people as a trauma response. ●But these people still deserve empathy, even if they may be our enemies. ●The current situation then challenges us to live in a way that reflects our values.Acknowledging Negative Thoughts ●Nobody's life is completely positive all the time. It's the human condition.●But some people ignore bad things happening around them because they believe they should not pull negative thoughts into their sphere. ●This belief is a gross misuse of privilege and a misunderstanding of spiritual concepts. ●If we cannot stay aligned with the positive or constructive while we are in the reality of terrible things, then we have more spiritual work to do. ●We must learn to be present and kind not because of its results but because it's the way to be. Keeping Ourselves Informed ●Our society tells women to let men handle important things. Although not a conscious intention, it's become a cultural heritage.●Women must be informed and allowed to state their opinions about the world and the news. ●Individually, we must learn to figure out how to translate things ourselves. It's important not to rely on others when it comes to digesting information. ●It's impossible to describe information to someone without putting your spin on it. ●“Crowdsourcing” with a group of people you trust to keep each other informed is also possible. This practice can help empathy translate into action and civic engagement. Engaging Conversations to Put Things into Perspective●Rosie recently had a conversation with her mother about why she used to wear black all the time. ●She was living in an area and going to a school where colors can get you killed. Wearing the wrong shade can potentially cause an issue with gangs. ●Engaging conversations like this helped put things into perspective for her mom. If they had discussed this at that time, it would have put less stress on both parties.●This example further emphasizes why we need to be authentically interested in the other person and where they're coming from.Sharing Your Truth ●Rosie's parents are proud of her book. But they still have reservations on why she needs to share her business with the world. ●This reaction has much to do with the cultural and generation gap. Millennials are more comfortable with personal sharing than Boomers. How Jessica Feels Radically Loved●Jessica compared the feeling of being radically loved to that of her vagus nerve named “Viva Las Vagus.” ●Her vagus nerve is her ally and resource. ●For the first time in her life, she's starting to appreciate, work with, and treat it with the reverence it deserves. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode[23:54] “The spiritual community...does deserve criticism, because we have a responsibility to be civically, politically, [and] socially-minded to take responsibility for the power of our actions and our words.”[26:14] “We need to be able to talk about how to be critical thinkers and what's the difference between disinformation and misinformation and misunderstandings. How do you determine what's real and what's not real?”[40:19] “It doesn't matter how much we practice being spiritual. At the end of the day, we can't just go live in a cave somewhere and pretend like everything is, at times, not falling apart.”[41:27] “If we cannot stay aligned with the positive or the constructive, while we are in the reality of all sorts of terrible things, then we have more spiritual work to do.”[47:13] “Whatever strategies we can come up with to be informed, stay informed, not just empathetic on a spiritual level, but to have empathy translate into action and civic engagement, that's what will make this Pluto return ideal.”About JessicaJessica Lanyadoo is a well-renowned psychic medium and astrologer with over 20 years of consulting experience. Cynthia Coredo’s childhood was rife with loss. At age 6, her father was murdered. Coredo witnessed his lifeless body lying on the streets of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. As a teen, she lost her older sister to illness and her mother to suicide, the result of depression from joblessness.    Coredo embraced the realization that she was responsible for raising her siblings and herself, and she knew that vocational training and education would be the pathway to self sufficiency. As a result, Coredo recognized a broader vision and created Footsteps — a leadership and entrepreneurial incubator for young women and girls.    With three grants totaling about $5,000, World Connect, a nonprofit that invests in sustainable grassroots projects, collaborated with Coredo to expand her vocational vision. To date hundreds of Nairobi women have been taught vocational skills and placed in internships; the majority now work full time.    Pamela Nathenson, executive director of WorldConnect and two-time guest of SheVentures, emphasizes that World Connect has a high project success rate after several years because of the nonprofit’s emphasis on local entrepreneurs being the key to understand the roadblocks in their own communities. WorldConnect provides some of the capital to jumpstart their solutions.   In sum, these two women — one in New York, one in Nairobi — are working for the betterment of women in under-served, poor, and slum communities.    On International Women’s Day, listen to this riveting story and consider how you can effect change for women and girls internationally on this episode of SheVentures.

N4L 091: "Never Binge Again" by Dr. Glenn Livingston

SUMMARY A formerly food-obsessed psychologist, Dr. Glenn Livingston delivers his free book, Never Binge Again: Reprogram Yourself to Think Like a Permanently Thin Person. (Stop Overeating and Binge Eating and Stick to the Food Plan of Your Choice). Borne out of his own disillusionment with traditional psychological approaches to overweight and/or food-obsessed individuals, the book cracks the code on binge eating. Contrary to the popular thought that focuses on healing and self-love, Livingston proposes a different approach. After spending several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating and self-funding a research program with more than 40,000 participants, Livingston has finally found a way to help us cage the “food monster.” Most importantly, his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison has led him to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. KEY POINTS “Exercise bulimia” = purging by working out really hard Everyone could blame bingeing on some trouble or life trauma. Find the voice of justification, and disempower it. Control of the middle-brain impulses; take charge and assert superiority. “Pig” = reptilian brain; “pig slop” = unhealthy food; “pig squeals” = powerful arguments filled with persuasive lies to get us to overeat Your personal food plan should include when you eat foods: never, always, conditional, and sometimes. Written laws make it possible for people to get along in society. Similarly, we need to write our “laws” for interacting with food. Like an archer aiming for a bullseye, we need to commit to a specific target before eating. Dependency on others to police our eating doesn’t work and leads to failed diets. The deprivation trap: what don’t and do get by not eating certain foods Taking control and deciding the kind of person we want to be is at the center of our personalized food plan. This approach to eating is a codification of common sense. QUOTES FROM LIVINGSTON “I figured there must be a hole in my heart, and if I could figure out how to fill the hole in my heart, then I could figure out how to fill the hole in my stomach.” “I went about trying to love myself thin.” “Ask yourself, ‘Do you eat beyond your own best judgment, and would you like to take control over that?’” “Ambiguity is the Pig’s best friend.” “Commit with perfection, and forgive yourself with dignity.” “The way to get started with this is to think about the single worst trigger-food behavior that dogs you, and then make one rule.” Get a free copy of Never Binge Again along with starter templates for developing food plans and recorded coaching sessions, OR go to Amazon to buy a print copy by clicking the link below: BUY Never Binge Again: Reprogram Yourself to Think Like a Permanently Thin Person. What better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than with an in-depth look at a woman who is tirelessly working to improve women’s lives globally? Pamela Nathanson and her dedication to helping women and girls across the globe is an inspiration. As executive director of World Connect, Nathanson and her team focus on issues ranging from sex trafficking to entrepreneurship. Each project has the goal of making these communities self-sustaining. One of World Connect’s projects in Rwanda  single-handedly reduced urinary tract infections (UTIs) in a group of women and girls by 100 percent. World Connect requires women’s involvement in all projects, and a whopping 51 percent of them are women-led. This episode highlights women's struggles outside of the United States.
