Kristin Caruso is a writer, editor, and researcher. She has a background in public relations and print journalism. Before Kristin joined Gaming Historian (hosted by her husband, Norman Caruso), she was an award-winning columnist and reporter. Kristin has a bachelor's degree in communications from Simmons College. Previously, she co-hosted the “Let's Go to Court” podcast. Currently, Kristin and Norm are co-hosts of An Ole Timey Podcast. Head to https://www.youtube.com/@fierceconversationswithtoby to find all video interviews! Transcripts available at https://tobydorr.com/podcast-schedule/ Some of our fierce topics today: [00:07:11] Writers often struggle with giving up control of their work to others. [00:09:47] An email was sent asking to join the novel critique group with a memoir, and it was agreed that it was fine. The chapter shared was so gripping that it was hard to believe it was nonfiction. [00:23:40] learned the most about writing and interviewing from Kristin's high school journalism teacher, Susan Massey. [00:25:21] People not from the Midwest often assume that everyone there knows each other, but it's actually a big place. [00:25:35] Kansas City has a small-town feel where it seems like everyone knows everyone. About Kristin Caruso: Kristin Caruso co-hosts An Old Timey Podcast. The show allows Kristin to justify her late-night deep dives into art heists, royal drama and old timey mysteries. She is a writer, a mutt enthusiast, and is only occasionally inappropriate.  Links mentioned in this episode: Kristin Caruso: An Ole Timey Podcast: https://linktr.ee/OldTimeyPodcast https://www.youtube.com/@GamingHistorian https://www.instagram.com/kristinpittscaruso/ ____________________________________ Toby Dorr: Books and Audiobook Website   Patreon YouTube Instagram Facebook Or head to https://linktr.ee/fierceconversations for all things Fierce Conversations with Toby. I'm on vacation this week, but very happy to share this interview we did on another show, with Norman Caruso (The Gaming Historian) back in 2021. If you enjoy games as much as we do, check out "Colette & Matt Have Entered the Chat," wherever you get podcasts: https://haveenteredthechat.com/ -- Original Show Notes from May 28, 2021 -- Norman Caruso, aka The Gaming Historian, has been meticulously documenting the history of video games (and their weird peripherals!) on YouTube since 2008. It took him 7 years before this passion project became a full-time job. More than 90 million views later, his channel is among the most rigorous and well-respected in the world of games journalism. Norman has covered topics as ubiquitous a Tetris and Super Mario Bros. 3, all the way down to failed tech like the Sega Mega Modem and an IRL fishing module for the Game Boy. We chat with Norman about how he got his start, why primary-source historical research takes so long, how he chooses topics, why it's OK to be wrong sometimes, and why you may never see a Pokémon video on his channel. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Waxwork. The feature film debut of writer-director Anthony Hickox, this homage to horror films is bloody and funny in equal measure. A gaggle of high school students investigate a local waxwork run by the erudite David Lincoln (David Warner). The student body is about to run afoul of scarcity. Waxwork has a paper thin premise to hang a plot on, but somehow it all works. The gore effects really revel in their squishiness, the variety of waxwork scenarios that come to life show a healthy measure of creativity, and it never overstays its welcome. A Marquis de Sade sequence is very strong despite lacking nudity. Mat enjoys video game history YouTube videos from The Gaming Historian. The Gaming Historian is back, by popular demand! Norman agreed to do another episode with us on one condition: that we talk about food. We agreed. (Let’s face it… we’re in no position to be turning down internet celebrities.) Brandi starts us off with a finger-lickin’-good story about Burger King’s chicken fries campaign. Everyone loved the commercials. They featured an aggressive, masked band called “Coq Roq.” There was just one issue.  Coq Roq bore a striking resemblance to the actual band Slipknot. Slipknot was not amused, and neither were their fans. Then Norm tells us about his favorite legal battle of all time. It all started when the Kansas City Royals’ terrifying mascot, Sluggerrr, accidentally hit a fan in the eye with a foil-wrapped hot dog. Hold on tight, folks. This one goes all the way to the Missouri Supreme Court. Kristin wraps things up with a tale about a group of cattlemen who sued Oprah Winfrey. Initially, it looked like Oprah would lose. The trial would take place in the heart of cattle country. And her jury was all-white. All over town, people proudly displayed bumper stickers that read, “The only mad cow in Amarillo is Oprah.” But if there’s one universal truth in this world, it’s that no one and we mean NO ONE is immune to Oprah Winfrey’s charm. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The time Oprah battled with the Texas beef industry,” The Texas Tribune “How the west was won over,” Texas Monthly In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Slipknot’s Burger King Beef” thesmokinggun.com “The 7 Most Bizarre Fast Food Industry Lawsuits” by Ian Fortey, cracked.com In this episode, Norman pulled from: “Jury clears Royals once again in Sluggerrr hot dog toss that ended badly,“ The Kansas City Star “Man alleging Sluggerrr hurt his eye with a hot dog gets another chance with Royals lawsuit“ The Kansas City Star “Testimony is heard a second time in lawsuit involving a Sluggerrr hot dog toss” The Kansas City Star

This week, we discuss video game lawsuits with our special guest, Norman Caruso, the Gaming Historian (http://thegaminghistorian.com/) . How did we get the Gaming Historian on this little dog and pony show? It’s hard to say. It could be that he’s a huge fan of obscure podcasts. … or it could be that he’s Kristin’s husband. What can we say? It’s a gigantic mystery. In this episode, Kristin starts us off with Devin Moore, a teenager who shot two police officers and a 911 dispatcher. When the police finally caught up with him, he said, “Life is like a video game. Everybody’s got to die sometime.” That mindset left a lot of people asking whether violent video games were to blame for his murder spree. Then Norman brings us our only non-violent crime of the day when he tells the fascinating story of Atari Games vs Nintendo. This lawsuit focused on the very first unlicensed games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Brandi wraps things up with Daniel Petric, the 16-year-old boy who shot his parents after they took away his copy of Halo 3. His defense attorney said that Daniel’s recent infection made him more susceptible to the game’s violent themes…. But we’re a little skeptical. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The Rise and Fall of Video Gamings Most Vocal Enemy,” Kotaku “Court Rejects Appeal in Alabama Suit Blaming Game for Slayings,” WSFA “Grand Theft Auto Player Gets Death Penalty,” The Inquirer “Can a Video Game Lead to Murder?” CBS News “Driven to Kill?” People Magazine In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Game Over For Teen Who Killed Mother Over Video Game” by Edecio Martinez, CBS News “17-year-old Accused of Killing Mother Over Halo 3 Video Game May Get Verdict Soon” by Marvin Fong, The Plain Dealer “Petric Sentenced to 23 Years To Life: Father Says Son Regrets Shooting Mother Over Halo 3 Video Game” by Jordan Cravens, The Morning Journal In this episode, Norman pulled from: “Game Over” by David Sheff A History of AT Games (http://mcurrent.name/atarihistory/at_games.html) Atari Games Corp v Nintendo http://digital-law-online.info/cases/24PQ2D1015.htm

Smash Bros Cast Episode 3 Smash Bros Melee History Developer: HAL Laboratories Release Date: Japan November 21, 2001. North America December 3rd, 2001 shortly after the GameCube launched. Europe and Australia were the following year on May 24th, 2002 and 31st, 2002. Development   Masahiro Sakurai was back in the driver seat for the sequel to Smash 64 and it would push him to a point that he referred to as destructive. It was the biggest project that he had ever led and because of that he took zero holiday’s off and had little to no weekends. He referred to Melee as “the sharpest game” in the series. With this game releasing so close to the launch of the GameCube the team really wanted to show the power of the system, so they worked with three different animation studios to complete the opening sequence. Character list Mario Luigi Yoshi Donkey Kong Link Samus Kirby Fox Pikachu Jigglypuff Captain Falcon Ness Peach Bowser Dr. Mario Zelda/Sheik Ganondorf Young Link Falco Mewtwo Pichu Ice Climbers Marth Roy Mr.Game & Watch Reception Melee was the top-selling GameCube game at 7.09 million, it became the fastest selling GameCube title in Japan selling almost 360,000 copies in four days. Most critics and news outlets praised the game. Melee sits at 92/100 on Metacritic IGN 9.6/10 Eurogamer 10/10 Nintendo Power 5/5 Edge Magazine 6/10   Competitive Melee The term I hear most often with Melee and the competitive scene is “happy accident.” Here’s this casual party game being played at a level I never thought was possible. The community discovered techniques like wavedashing, dashdancing, directional influence and L-canceling. Soon after small tournaments were being held in homes or game shops. Matt Deezie began hosting the Tournament Go series in Northern California and came up with a ruleset of legal stages and tournament procedures. More tournaments began to spring up and the community was growing. In 2004 Melee was added to MLG’s largest tournaments. This Last weekend I watched the entire documentary on the Melee competitive scene. It’s over four hours long, but it was amazing to see the history of the scene and how it all started. Click here to watch the Melee Documentary     My History with Smash Melee Christmas morning 2001 my wife surprised me with a Gamecube and had all of our family members and friends buy me games and controllers. We very little money at that time, so I was very surprised. Smash was one of the three games I got that year and the moment I fired it up I was blown away by what I was seeing. I was still playing Perfect Dark and Mario Kart 64 at that time, so it was a massive improvement. The opening cinematic was magic. I unlocked all the characters and I love checking out the trophies, especially the proximity mine from Perfect Dark. Sadly Microsoft crushed those dreams. Unfortunately, I didn’t have many friends to play Melee with so after I unlocked all the characters it didn’t get nearly as much play time as I would have liked. In 2002 EGM posted that Sonic could be unlocked in Melee and I spent forever trying to KO 20 wireframes on the cruel difficulty when I finally did there was no Sonic. Nintendo Power eventually put out an article clearing up the cruel April fools joke from EGM. Sources Smash Bros Wiki https://www.ssbwiki.com/Super_Smash_Bros. Gaming Historian https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myhBphil-Uw Smash Practice Practicing with level 9 CPU My focus has been on defense right now Shield: L Button Spot Dodge: Shield + Down on Left Stick (momentary invincibility with zero knockbacks) Dodge: Shield + Left or Right on Left Stick (quickly roll to avoid attacks or get a to position quicker than normal movement) Air Dodge: Shield While in the Air Fast Fall: Flick the Left Stick to quickly reach the ground or nearest platform As I am playing with Mario I am seeing his weakness is reach. I have to be able to get in close. Pulling off a Spot Dodge followed by a simple combo feels like progress for me.   Smas

Ep.2 Is all about the history of Smash 64! History of Smash 64 Developed by HAL Laboratory under the direction of Masahiro Sakurai    Originally only planned to be released Japan under the name Nintendo All-Star Great Fray Smash Brothers Release date January 21st, 1999 in Japan, April 26th, 1999 for the US, and EU was November 19, 1999 Sakurai began development for a fighting game called Dragon King The Fighting Game. After showing Satoru Iwata he was on board. Knowing that fighting games didn’t sell well Sakurai used Nintendo characters without permission, Mario, Samus, Donkey Kong and Fox. before presenting the game to Nintendo higher-ups he made sure to present a balanced game and it was approved. Marketing this game was like nothing we had seen before the first commercial featured a live-action Pikachu, Yoshi, Mario, and Donkey skipping through a field that quickly turns into an all-out mascot brawl. Sprinkled throughout the commercial was gameplay showcasing the characters fighting and I couldn’t believe my eyes. The final game had 12 playable characters, 4 needed to be unlocked. Mario Donkey Kong Link Samus Yoshi Kirby Fox Pikachu Luigi Captain Falcon Ness Jigglypuff Smash had a single player adventure that would put you against the other combatants. Training, Break the Targets and Board the Platforms were mini-games that you could play single player. Multiplayer is where this game shined 4 players going to head to head lead to hours and hours fun. Smash 64 sold 5 million copies worldwide. US 2.93 million copies 1.97 million copies in Japan. It was the 64’s 5th best selling game and received an above average score from most critics and news outlets. Beating your friends down with Nintendo characters in multiplayer combined with simple controls were the main factors in the decent scores. Nintendo Power 7.7 out of 10 IGN 8.5 out of 10 (IGN gave it Best Fighting Game) GameSpot 7.5 Metacritic 79 of 100 Easter Eggs The eight characters that are unlocked from the beginning of the game are in order of when each of their games released. Sumus and Ness’s only appearance on the 64 were in Smash   Sources Smash Bros Wiki https://www.ssbwiki.com/Super_Smash_Bros. Gaming Historian https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myhBphil-Uw

We discuss the various new products mentioned recently such as the series 3 watch, the 4k Apple tv, and the two tiers of new phones (8 and X). A cellular connection on the watch is an expected, but useful jump. The Apple TV also saw what looks like an incremental improvement in performance, which might signal Apple's intent for enhanced gaming with their device to go along with the cheaper 4K videos they have pushed publishers to now provide (like what they did with music in iTunes). This time they skipped the "S" version of their 7 phone and went to version 8 (plus) instead. The more surprising offering is iPhone X which has a corner to corner OLED screen with enhanced sensors (black cut-out on the top of the camera). There is a lot to talk about here!
