After World War 2, during the period of developed socialism, a rich ecosystem of Marxist intellectuals and academics emerged in the Georgian SSR. Universities and scientific institutes in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Telavi, and Batumi were home to sociologists, philosophers, anthropologists, historians and other academics who took part in Soviet wide and international discussions and debates on different aspects of Marxist theory or Marxist inspired academic research. Since the collapse of the USSR in 1991, this "lost pantheon" of Georgian Marxism has been politically undermined, intellectually marginalized and socially forgotten. But who were these Soviet Georgian Marxists? What were their ideas? What were they writing about and researching in the period of developed socialism, the late USSR? And how did Soviet Georgian Marxists fit into Soviet-wide and broader international academic networks and debates? And why is reclaiming and reengaging with Soviet Georgian Marxists important today? On today's episode we welcome Bakar Berekashvili to begin this discussion on Marxism in Soviet Georgia, what it tells us about Georgia's Soviet experience and how it relates to academia, politics and more in Georgia since 1991. In the coming weeks we will be releasing a series of shorter episodes on individual Soviet Georgian Marxists....stay tuned! Bakar Berekashvili is Professor of Political Science and Sociology at the Georgian American University in Tbilisi. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, at the Institute of Contemporary History in Ljubljana, at the Masaryk University in Brno and at the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid. His research and teaching interests include qualitative research, critical sociology, Marxist thought in Soviet Union, Soviet Union (life and social order), post-socialist politics and society, ruling class, problems of democracy, social & political theory, political sociology, power and ideology.

Journalists, legal experts, and media watchdogs have criticised the arrest, saying that the charges, under which she could face four to seven years in prison, are wildly disproportionate to what she had done. This week, we spoke with Batumelebi's Irma Dimitradze about the circumstances surrounding the arrest, to journalist Tamar Rukhadze, about the current media environment in Georgia, and to OC Media's Mariam Nikuradze about the legal debate around her prosecution. Autor bloga "Kierunek Kaukaz" relacjonuje trwające protesty w Tbilisi.

For the tenth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guest Alan Oldham representing stories from Detroit.ALAN OLDHAM has been called “Detroit's Renaissance Man,” equally as known for his art as for his music under the pseudonym DJ T-1000.  The Detroit-born polymath, now living and working in Berlin, began his dual careers in the late 80s. First as the host of the “Fast Forward Program” on WDET FM 101.9, Detroit's first-ever radio show devoted exclusively to electronic music, and as a young indie comic artist, writing and drawing his own original creation, “Johnny Gambit” (predating the Marvel character). Oldham was later tapped by his childhood friend, Derrick May, to illustrate the label art for the now-classic records “Nude Photo” and “Beyond The Dance” on his fledgling Transmat label, and Detroit Techno history was made. Oldham was later hired by another childhood friend, Jeff Mills, to do freelance PR for the nascent Underground Resistance collective, writing press releases for the label. When Mills departed for a solo career, UR partner “Mad” Mike Banks tapped AO to replace him as DJ for their Australian Tour of 1992. The codename DJ T-1000 was adopted, and history was made once again.  Jumpstart to infamy.Since then, as an international DJ, Oldham has spun all over the planet, as far afield as Tokyo, Manila, The Phillipines, and Shanghai. When he's not behind the decks at home clubs Tresor Berlin and RSO, on the road to places like Batumi, Georgia or Trapani, Italy, or in the studio making music for labels like RSPX/Rekids, BPitch Berlin, Suspected Music, Third Ear, Elypsia Records, or his own Pure Sonik Records label, he is making new paintings and organizing art openings showcasing his iconic works. Oldham has put on art happenings in Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Vienna, and Detroit, as well as his iconic techno artworks being on view in Paris, London and Dusseldorf, as part of its traveling “Electronic: From Kraftwerk to the Chemical Brothers” exhibit. The multi-talented Oldham has also made his artistic debut in Kobe, Japan in 2022 with the exhibit “Massive Dynamic” at the Nick Jerky Art Cafe. In 2024, Oldham was also honored by the Mayor and Detroit City Council with a “Spirit of Detroit” Award for his musical and artistic contributions to his hometown. And back in Berlin, as part of Love Parade founder Dr. Motte's Rave The Planet team, Oldham helped Berlin Techno to achieve UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. Oldham's long-awaited EP as DJ T-1000 for Rekids sub-label RSPX is out now, as well as his new “Ask Me No Questions And I'll Tell You No Lies” EP on Pure Sonik Records, currently riding high on several Spotify techno charts including Mary Anne Hobbs' on BBC6. New releases to come!Support the show

Paula Erizanu a publicat pînă acum trei cărți. The Guardian”, BBC, „Financial Times”, „London Review of Books”.

Fast-forward to 2022 and Lindsey has truly become a recognized name in her city and beyond, in large part thanks to her unique signature sets— true journeys that explore alternating soundscapes laced together by dark, deep and heavy textures, as well psychedelic elements and ethereal melodies; and now her ever-growing list of original productions as well. Today's guest on the Expat Money Show is Dr. Kolja Spori, Formula 1 Agent and Austrian Economist who has visited all 193 countries of the world. Kolja narrowly missed the bombing of Donbas rebel leader Alexander Sakharchenko in the Separatist Cafè Donezk, and he won a staredown against US "Defence Secretary" Donald Rumsfeld in an elevator in Batumi. He is often known by his nickname Dr. Dangerzone and is the Ambassador of Germany to the World's youngest country: Liberland, and he also happens to be a very dear friend of mine, so I'm really excited to have him on our show!    A GLIMPSE INTO MY CONVERSATION WITH KOLJA What an intense conversation with Kolja on the most dangerous cities and countries you can travel to and what can happen at any moment while you are there. What life is like when you have visited every UN country in the world, especially war zones…  We talk about THE most dangerous capital in the world and what the government does and doesn't do to protect its citizens. On the other hand, we talk about Russia and the freedom from government and what it's like in Siberia. Such dichotomy. I really wanted to understand what is it about these dangerous countries or the war zone that attracted Kolja to want to visit and see them, and why he continues to visit them again and again. Listen in as Kolja describes war zones and crisis areas in Belfast, Northern Ireland… what it felt like and the process he undertook to be able to process what was happening… countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Congo… each one more dangerous than the other How hiring a local taxi driver in these horrific war zone areas who can explain why after so many years these things are still happening, can impact who you are as a person and why it's so important to understand the truth. Find out which city and country are Kolja's most favourite of all the countries he has visited in his lifetime. I bet you'll never guess. How the information we get on television or in our mainstream media is the direct opposite of the reality on the ground, as we discuss several different countries and what life is actually like living there. Extreme Traveller Congress… from billionaire to backpacker, how 150 participants come together, no matter what they've done in the past, and why it just doesn't matter, all for the love of travel and adventure. We discuss in detail what life is like for Kolja now, living in Monaco, after spending years travelling… is this still a passion for him? I wanted to understand what Kolja has learned from visiting all of these different types of war zone countries and meeting the players that are involved? What have been his insights? If you have an extra $250,000 sitting around and want to do something so radical that almost no one else on earth has done or even heard about, then listen as Kolja pitches you on his next adventure of 2023.   RELATED EPISODES https://expatmoneyshow.com/episodes/vit-jedlika (159: Creating A Libertarian Country From Scratch – Vít Jedlička ) https://expatmoneyshow.com/episodes/jennings-wright/ (145: Building A Nonprofit In The Slums Of Uganda – Jennings Wright ) https://expatmoneyshow.com/episodes/salvatore-lavallo/ (128: Travelling To Every Country In The World – Salvatore Lavallo )   HOW TO CONTACT KOLJA SPORI http://www.spori.net (Spori.net)   CONCLUSION This was a fun hour spent with my friend, smoking a cigar and talking about our radical travels throughout our lives. My guest today is a British-born, Spanish-based adventurer, writer and windsurfing instructor. In 2015 he achieved his childhood ambition to windsurf around Britain, becoming only the fourth person to complete the circumnavigation this way, and the first to complete it alone and without support. Everyone, please help me welcome to MFS, Jono Dunnett! Jono's expedition started and ended at the town of Clacton-on Sea. The voyage included the following crossings: Devon to South Wales via Lundy Island; South Wales to Southern Ireland; and Northern Ireland to Scotland. During this time, Jono used his expedition website to raise funds for the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF). Jono is the author of the book “Long Standing Ambition: The First Round Britain Windsurf”, which chronicles this incredible expedition. In this interview, we talk about where he got the idea to windsurf around Britain, what the preparation was like, the gear that he used and the close calls he experienced in this 98-day voyage. And if that were not incredible enough, in May of 2017, Jono set off on a solo expedition to windsurf the European mainland coastline. He windsurfed a continuous track from Norway's Artic as far as Batumi, Georgia, in the Black Sea. He finished this incredible expedition on June 10 2017. In two years he had sailed about 16,000km, a distance that almost doubled the record for a windsurfing journey. Jono is in the midst of publishing a book on this European expedition, so the hope is that he will come back on the podcast and talk about that exciting expedition. **My First Season podcast has always been free to listen to and is available on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. Niemniej jednak w wyborach lokalnych GM zdobyło prawie 47 procent.  Podcast został udostępniony bezpłatnie w ramach współpracy pomiędzy autorem i portalem Nowa Europa Wschodnia. Rorshok's weekly ten-minute update of stuff happening in Georgia. TV Pirveli cameraman Lekso Lashkarava, who was one of 53 media representatives previously attacked at a Tbilisi Pride counter-rally, was found dead this week. At home recovering from multiple injuries sustained during the attack, circumstances surrounding the journalist's death are still pending and under investigation, but some officials are pointing toward a drug overdose. Lesko's death prompted protests across Georgia, including Batumi where protesters attempted to spray paint the word “murderers” on the Government of Adjara building. In other news, COVID-19 cases are still on the rise, but the country did receive 43,000 AstraZeneca vaccines this past week. Farmers who lost cattle to anthrax will receive compensation from the state, beginning in 2022. A deeper dive into politics and women refusing maternity leave. These stories, and much more. Thanks for tuning in! We want to know why you are listening, how you found us, and your life story! Thoughts? Recommendations? The Power Vertical Podcast by Brian Whitmore

Battleships, warplanes, brinkmanship, and geopolitics on the high seas. What actually happened when Britain's HMS Defender sailed from the Ukrainian port of Odessa to the Georgian port of Batumi? How did what appears to have been a routine mission to assert navigation rights in the Black Sea escalate into a military and diplomatic incident between Russia and the West? With Russia and NATO conducting dueling naval exercises in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas tensions are rising. On this week's Power Vertical Podcast, host Brian Whitmore speaks to military analyst Michael Kofman of the CNA Corporation about what it all means. Enjoy…

Reimagining Soviet Georgia

Ronald Grigor Suny's decades long career as a historian transformed historiography of the Soviet Union by centering the nation and nationality. He did this with special attention to the nations of the South Caucasus - Armenia, Azerbaijan and of course, Georgia. Suny's analysis focused on how nationhood is a constructed product of history, and imagined, not a primordial, essential, ethnic community. Suny's newest book Stalin: Passage To Revolution is a look at the early part of Josef Stalin's life in the years leading up to the 1917 Russian Revolution. The book interrogates the world that made Stalin - early 20th century social democracy in the South Caucasus. This is the multinational movement and milieu spanning Baku, Tiflis and Batumi, in which the young seminarian from Gori, Soso Jughashvill politically matured through writing articles, planning expropriations and organizing workers, becoming Josef Stalin a revolutionary Marxist and bolshevik. On today's episode myself and Sopo Japaridze interview historian Ronald Grigor Suny to discuss his new book Stalin: Passage To Revolution, social democracy in Georgia, Soviet history and more. We here at Reimagining Soviet Georgia held a reading group on the book, so we invited our friend, comrade and fellow reading group member Julia Damphouse on for a short conversation and reflection on the Stalin: Passage to Revolution Julia is a member of the editorial board for the english language translation of the complete works of Rosa Luxemburg, and the reading groups coordinator at Jacobin Magazine. Immediately following the Suny interview, Sopo and Julia discuss their reflections on the book and why it is worth the 700 page undertaking.

Welcome to the first, introductory podcast of Reimagining Soviet Georgia! We are a new, multigenerational, multilingual, Tbilisi based collective. Our goal is to reexamine and rearticulate the history of Soviet Georgia by producing and supporting critical research, including oral and written histories, and a podcast for both Georgian and English speaking audiences. By documenting the perspectives and stories of Georgia's aging Soviet generation, exploring underused archives and working with a new generation of historians untainted by Cold War anti-communism, it will be possible to tell the story of Soviet Georgia on an array of platforms with the honesty and openness it has yet to be fully afforded. Why is Reengaging with Georgia's Soviet experience important? Why now? As the nuance of the Soviet past has been under sustained public political assault since Georgian independence in 1991, the Soviet Union and Georgia's experience within it has been reduced to a caricature of its complex self, seen wholly through the lens of crude anti-communism and ethnonationalism. Even worse, this caricature is used as the ideological and political basis of Georgian politics, creating fertile ground for orthodox libertarianism and a cult of neoliberalism to capture the political imagination of the populace. The Soviet Union in Georgia is presented in public discourse as a time which was bleakly totalitarian, composed solely of gulags and defined solely by political repression. Even worse, propagandistic projects like Tbilisi's “Museum of Soviet Occupation” - a permanent exhibition - work to conceive of Georgia's Soviet story as a continuation of a two century long “Russian occupation”. Or the 2010 passing of the "Liberty Act" which effectively banned the public display of Soviet-era, Communist symbols, thereby making any balanced public appraisal of the historical experience of Soviet Georgia impossible. Projects and laws such as these erase the realities of the Soviet system in Georgia, including the dynamics of Soviet multiethnic life, legacies of Georgian Bolshevism or the benefits and possibilities afforded to Georgians given their comparatively privileged position within the Soviet Union. Georgians who helped build the Soviet Union and the ways in which the Soviet Union built and developed Georgia are actively erased. Even worse, by framing all of Georgia's contemporary problems being solely caused by the Soviet experience, or due to some persistence of a “soviet mentality”, creative and effective political solutions become further and further out of reach. These politics stand in stark contrast to what those of us – both Georgian and non-Georgian alike - with deep interests in the Soviet Union and, in particular, Georgia and the South Caucasus, have experienced in Georgia. Many people we have spoken to wholly reject reductive anti-Soviet sentiments. Miners in Chiatura, refugees from Abkhazia in Tskaltubo, taxi drivers in Kutaisi, market workers in Tbilisi, or small café owners in Batumi - remember the Soviet era as a time of stability and possibility, and the post-Soviet era as marked by profound loss. This opposes how politicians, think tanks, and Western governments alike try and frame the USSR as a system wholly marked by repression and unfreedoms. This is a political tool to them of course, but it is profoundly cynical and dishonest to the history of modern Georgia. Our hope is to give a platform to the voices of those across the country for whom the memory of the USSR is not seen as a regressive detour in the larger history of Georgia but as a better time. We hope to compliment these oral histories with research and writing that will piece together a clearer picture of Georgia's Soviet story, and of Georgia within the global historical trajectory.
