Halloween is on the way and we always do something different for it. This time we're doing a commentary for the 1987 vampire movie The Lost Boys! We even dressed in Lost Boys themed outfits for the Patreon vid which we will make available to ALL Patrons (even free ones), as a treat. The Lost Boys is an interesting comedy horror vampire film, it distils a LOT of really big 1980s style trends and yet it doesn't seem old fashioned or twee because it takes the viewer to the era and accepts you rather than keeping you at a distance as an outsider. You see punks, the surfer beach culture, metal-heads, new romantics and more. It's just a great showcase and super exaggeration of the styles. The movie starts off with the awesome Cry Little Sister theme by Gerard McMann which is 80s but also has a timeless creepy gothic feel, it's the perfect intro to the movie, setting the slightly edgy, creepy tone and coolness factor at the same time. But it also contains the perfect summary of the theme of film to come. McMann wrote the song after reading the script rather than seeing the film so he was able to get at the central things that are easy to miss with all the cool visuals: it's a film about families and loyalty. Two families compete for survival, one are the Emersons who have just moved to Santa Clara to be with their grandpa, the patriarch, the other is the vampire clan led by its patriarch. The vampire clan wants to absorb the Emersons, starting with the oldest son Michael, but youngest Sam doesn't want that to happen! Cry Little Sister is from the perspective of the Vamps alone though while the film is from the perspective of the Emersons. This is a fun, stylish movie and we had a lot of fun watching it all over again and doing this reaction cast! Comics even have a prominent place in the film with the vampire slaying Frog brothers working at a comic shop and using comics as a way of bonding with Sam as well as finding out how to deal with the vampires. Have a listen and maybe go and watch the movie again. Long before the Twilight books and movies made vampires cool, the motion picture The Lost Boys was a hit. This dark comedy/action drama centers around Michael and Sam Emerson and their experiences with a biker gang who are secretly vampires living in the California beach town of Santa Carla. When Michael is drawn into the influence of the vampires, he must make a choice between becoming a vampire himself or fighting the conversion by killing the head vampire. The name comes from the Peter Pan stories, because much like the lost boys in that tale, vampires never grow up. The cast included Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman, and was a box office hit.The film also created a hit with The Lost Boys: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Featuring a number of notable rock stars and groups including INXS, Foreigner's Lou Gramm, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Who's Roger Daltrey, it spawned multiple singles. The soundtrack contains both original songs and covers, all either alluding to events in the movie or to what could be considered “vampire culture” - lostness, staying up at night, and similar characteristics. The film is credited for changing the perception of vampires to a more youthful and appealing monster. Subsequent adaptations of the vampire genre which would be inspired by the film include movies as diverse as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the mockumentary film “What We Do in the Shadows.”John Lynch was up all night “staking his claim” on this podcast feature. Cry Little Sister by Gerard McMannSinger-songwriter Gerard McMahon wrote this anthem under the pseudonym Gerard McMann. It would be considered the theme for the movie, and was specifically written for the film. McMann was thinking of a Gotham-like image in which you have to turn to faith in order to escape the doom in the night.Lost in the Shadows by Lou GrammGramm steps out from the shadows of his group Foreigner for this solo effort. The video for this song would feature clips from the film. Fuzzy guitar distortion and harmonica drive this deep cut, and was also written specifically for the movie. Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me by Roger DaltreyThe Elton John hit is covered by Who front man Daltrey, and the allusion to vampires is pretty clear to see. The film ends with morning breaking and the sun coming up, and Daltrey is singing this song as the credits roll.I Still Believe by Tim CappelloThe Call's song is covered by saxophonist Cappello, who also makes a cameo where he is playing the song on the boardwalk. The lyrics are about the 40 days of fasting that Jesus undertook at the start of His ministry, and the reference to belief plays into the theme of faith versus giving into darkness that runs through this film. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Once Upon a Time...Storybook Love by Mark Knopfler (from the motion picture “The Princess Bride”) It would be inconceivable for us to pass up this theme from the Rob Reiner movie which was in the theaters in the fall of 1987. STAFF PICKS:One Slip by Pink Floyd After the departure of Roger Waters, Pink Floyd released the album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" with only David Gilmour and Nick Mason listed as members. Bruce brings us this staff pick which was co-written by Gilmour and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music. It is about unintended consequences of impulsive action, in this case an unintended pregnancy. Hourglass by SqueezeRob features the debut single from Squeeze's seventh album, “Babylon and On.” The fast-paced chorus is distinctive and catchy. Songwriters Chris Dilford and Glenn Tilbrook typically wrote the lyrics and music respectively in separate sessions (much like Bernie Taupin and Elton John), but collaborated in the same room on this song. The memorable video is full of surrealism and optical illusions.Luka by Suzanne Vega Wayne takes an uncharacteristically softer and slower pick with singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega's song about child abuse. The song was actually written prior to Vega's first album but didn't make its studio debut until her second album, “Solitude Standing."” The name comes from a boy who played in front of Vega's building and stood apart from the other children. Bad by Michael JacksonLynch brings us the title track to Michael Jackson's massively successful follow-up album to “Thriller.” Jackson wrote this song in an attempt to change his persona to a tough guy. The video was directed by Martin Scorsese, and Prince auditioned for the video. He departed as soon as he read the line, "your butt is mine," and Wesley Snipes would take the role. NOVELTY TRACK:Wipeout by the Fat Boys featuring The Beach BoysWe finish off with this unlikely pairing of beatbox rappers of the 80's and beach music founders of the 60's.

PART TIME Faded Rose (Shattered Love) Burger Records / Tough Love Records LP/CD/CS out November 2, 2018 WATCH THIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNSppwKkZzs Taken from the album, Spell #6, released on 2nd November via Tough Love (Europe) and Burger (R.O.W.). The European pressing is available on limited edition green vinyl (500 copies). Pre-order here - smarturl.it/PartTimeSpell6 Follow Part Time Facebook - www.facebook.com/parttime623/ Nearing a decade old and with a discography reaching deep into double figures across several different labels (Mexican Summer, Burger, Plastic Response Records) David Loca’s work under the Part Time moniker really shouldn’t require any introduction. Nonetheless, the release of what is officially his sixth album, fittingly titled Spell #6, does signal something of a re-birth and provides a compelling entry point for anyone new to Loca’s prolific output. Whereas previous albums were notable for a charming lo-fi production, Spell #6 takes Part Time uptown. "I describe this album as 'my studio album', because it was entirely re-recorded at my drummer Walter Byer's studio, unlike most of my past releases being bedroom experimental pop recordings." Loca produced the record himself, impressively appropriating a classic 80s pop sound that recalls some of the more grand productions of that era - think Stephen Street’s expressive production on ‘Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me’, Crowded House and The Church’s widescreen interpolation of Paisley Underground jangle, and there's even traces Gerard McMann’s grandiose ‘Cry Little Sister’. In that sense, the record stands as an outlier in Loca’s catalogue, and in doing so sheds the sometimes limiting trappings of bedroom recording Though it is Loca’s project, Spell #6 sees him joined by a consistent supporting cast of fellow writers and performers who add a poise and deftness to his vision, most notably Ariel Pink, who makes a guest appearance on lead single, ‘I Can Treat You Better’. A lead single for its obvious earworm qualities, it also functions as an ideal snapshot of the lyrical themes that run through the entire record: romantic gestures and unrequited love, bad decisions on hot nights/hot decisions on bad nights, and unpinning it all, LA. For this is evidently a West Coast record, like a 2018 take on To Live and Die in LA: expansive, grand, and not a little crazy (in love) from the heat.
The Vampyre (John William Polidori)The Skeleton Court, or The Vampire Mistress (Elizabeth Caroline Grey) Varney the Vampire (James Malcolm Rymer) Carmilla (Sheridan LeFanu) Drácula (Bram Stoker)Vampire of the CoastThe Vampire (Robert Vignola) Nosferatu, una sinfonía de horror (F. The soundtrack to The Lost Boys is a collection of amazingly catchy tracks. Be it INXS teaming up with the Easybeats' Jimmy Barnes to do a version of "Good Times," the Who's Roger Daltry covering "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me," or the exquisitely perfect version of the Doors' "People Are Strange" by Echo and the Bunnymen, the soundtrack is a solid collection of classic songs by what were then modern artists. It's a nice nod to the ageless nature of the forever young vampires in the film. However, the film's theme song, "Cry Little Sister," by Gerard McMann, is the only cut to appear twice in The Lost Boys, and definitely does a great job of sonically conveying the concept of the film in a thre-minute pop song. McMann, who now performs under the aegis of G Tom Mac, has also recorded a musical sort of prequel to The Lost Boys. A Lost Boys Story sees release later this month, and we were excited to talk with McMann about both the film and the upcoming musical.
Gerard McMahon (aka Gerard McMann and G Tom Mac) (born Gerard Thomas MacMahon, of Irish/English parentage, in Birmingham, England) is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer who specialises in creating music for films and TV. McMahon is also the founder member of the band G TOM MAC. Whilst McMahon has undertaken many different musical projects throughout his career, he is probably still best known by many for the gothic rock anthem "Cry Little Sister", a song which he recorded in 1987 for the soundtrack album of the cult horror film The Lost Boys.
