BETTER DREAD THAN DEAD: D. Bethel shares some initial thoughts on the newest 2D Metroid game, Metroid 5 aka Metroid Dread. EMULATE YOU WANT IT, THAT'S THE WAY YOU NEED IT: Kotaku got in a bit of heat when they reported a story about how people were able to get Metroid Dread up and running on emulators in a smooth 60 frames per second at 4K resolution. The problem is that, in the original story, readers felt that Kotaku was, in fact, recommending people pirate Dread instead of buying it because of the emulator's stronger performance. Media Molecule, one of Sony's most intriguing first-party studios, finally released the long in development "Dreams" out of early access and onto store shelves on Valentine's Day. Unlike the usual software you purchase for PlayStation 4, Dreams isn't a game, but a user-generated content creation suite that happens to let you *make* games, among other things. Best known as the creators of the LittleBigPlanet series, the team isn't new to creating experiences that leverage its community to create, share, and play, but it's certainly the first time they've put out a product that doesn't really have a "game" in it at all. Dreams really is more of a development tool akin to Unity or Unreal, a far cry from MM's past efforts of quirky platformers with friendly mascots. And while we can certainly describe what Dreams is, we can't clearly foresee what it might become. The BioShock Bug continues to spread this week as Travis joins the others in revisiting Rapture yet again, news of the costly materials going into PlayStation 5 gives us further insight into what we'll be coughing up to Sony this fall, a couple of the biggest names at BioWare are founding a new studio to escape the "corporate" vibes of EA, Geoff Keighley is the next big name to say "adios" to E3, and Need for Speed heads back to Criterion Games after its short, but fruitful, stint with Ghost Games. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/absentminded/message

The American publication Bloomberg is typically a reliable source of information, and a recent story within its pages tells an interesting tale. It appears Sony is having a hard time keeping production costs of PlayStation 5 down, so much so that it's delaying the Japanese corporation's ability to determine what it should charge for the console, or if it can even turn a profit selling it. There's even reportedly a little civil war going on internally, with some powers-that-be convinced profit should be extracted no matter what, even if it affects demand. Should we be worried? Für den zweiten Teil setzen wir uns ans Steuer, wir besprechen «Need for Speed: Payback», den aktuellsten Titel aus dieser traditionsreichen Spieleserie. «Need for Speed: Payback» ist ein Openworld-Spiel und spielt in der fiktiven Stadt Fortune Valley. In der Kampagne schlüpfen wir in die Rolle von drei verschiedenen Racern, welche das Kartell "The House" zu Fall bringen wollen. In den rund 20 Stunden Spielzeit bietet das Spiel viel Abwechslung, Rennen auf und neben der Strasse in verschiedenen Klassen, 78 Fahrzeuge mit Lizenz. Die Autos sind einfach zu steuern und zu kontrollieren, das Spiel ist ein reiner Arcade-Racer. Für die Darstellung nutzen die Entwickler von «Ghost Games» die Frostbite 3 Engine. Damit sehen nicht nur die Autos sondern auch die Landschaften rund um Fortune Valley sehr hübsch aus. Dabei kommt die «Xbox One X» nie ins Schwitzen, die Framerate bleibt konstant.
