This is Play That Rock n' Roll's interview with former TNA Ring Announcer David Penzer about his new book, "SITTING RINGSIDE, Volume 2: The XWF, TNA and Life After Wrestling". And as an added bonus, we are joined by a special guest co-host: AAron Camaro from the Decibel Geek podcast! We discuss some of the topics Dave covered in the book, including an infamous confrontation between Rowdy Roddy Piper and Vince Russo, but most of this interview is actually about music! When Dave was here last time, he mentioned that he is a huge rock music fan and that he's seen over a thousand concerts. Since we're a music show, I figured this would be a great opportunity for Dave to share some stories and opinions on various rock and roll topics. In this conversation, Dave shares some hot takes on bands like KISS, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Chicago, and even Pablo Cruise. He also talks about his interactions with Gene Simmons and Rickey Medlocke from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Plus he tells us about some of the best concerts he's ever seen.

In this free preview clip of the second and final episode of our deep dive Patreon series on the sale of WCW, Kris and David take a look at WrestlingObserver.com’s ongoing coverage of the cancellation of WCW programming over the course of a few days in March 2001. This is when everything came to a head, with the Fusient Media Ventures deal just about dead and World Wrestling Federation Entertainment becoming the obvious lead suitor, and it’s fascinating to look back at. And if you want to hear what Kris found at the end of the clip? You know what you have to do. To hear the whole show, you need to become a Between The Sheets patron at the $5/month level or higher by going to Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets ( http://www.patreon.com/betweenthesheets ). ----- *Full show description:* It’s April 2021, and you know what that means: The 20th anniversary of the final episode of WCW Worldwide and thus the second and final part of our series on the sale of (the assets of) World Championship Wrestling to Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation Entertainment. We pick up at the start of March, as Fusient Media Ventures' main investor pulls funding, something that only the Torch reports. From there, all hell breaks lose, and to properly capture the chaos and chronology of what happened around the newsletters' deadlines, we have notes from not just the newsletters and the trades, but also WrestlingObserver.com among other sources, including some passages from Guy Evans "Nitro" book. Everything comes to a head when Turner Broadcasting cancels all WCW programming, something that is quickly credited to incoming executive and The WB network head Jamie Kellner. But taking all of the contemporaneous reporting together paints a very specific picture, one that we did not anticipate: That Jamie Kellner was very obviously scapegoated for the cancellation of WCW programming after being maneuvered into a scenario where he had no other realistic choice...all while having to juggle Joss Whedon calling him out publicly in the middle of negotiations to renew "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." All that and much more, including a LOT of Torch reporting that lines up nicely with what Guy Evans found, Lenita Erickson sabotaging Eric Bischoff's last-ditch meeting with Fox to try to save the Fusient deal, Linda McMahon and Stu Snyder's media call after announcing the WCW purchase, just how badly WCW's 200 employees were treated by AOL Time Warner at the end, and other topics too numerous to list here. This is one of the best shows we've ever done, and we hope you feel the same way. Timestamps: 0:00:00 Week of 3/5/2001 (Fusient’s investor pulls funding.) 0:33:35 Week of 3/12/2001 (WCW programming is cancelled.) 1:31:47 Week of 3/19/2001 (Cancellation fallout/sale to WWFE.) 3:29:25 Week of 3/26/2001 (Final episode of Monday Nitro.) 4:38:48 Week of 4/2/2001 To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets ( http://patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets ) and become an ongoing Patron. On this weeks episode of the Freedom Path Investors Podcast #15, we sat down with local St. Louis flooring company owner and real estate investor Brad Evans; from Evans Flooring. If you are in the St. Louis area and are in need of any hardwood refinishing or installation give Brad Evans and Evans Flooring a chance. (314) 722-3047 Brad has overcome some incredible odds in life. Dropping out of high school, drug addiction, and eventual jail time ended up being the best thing to happen in his life. Fast forward several years later, he now has abuisness that now grosses over 3 million a year with over 30 employees. Brad started buying rental property about 5 years ago and reinvesting profits from his company in passive income. Now he owns 10 free & clear houses and will do an occasional fix & flip to keep all his crews busy. Some key take aways from our conversation; 1- invest the same time you put into your vices or bad habits instead into your buisness or passion. 2- reinvest into your buisness early on to scale 3- delegate the jobs you don't like and aren't good at and elevate A players on your team 4- always be marketing yourself 5- do whatever it takes if you want to be successful, outwork and out hustle the other guys

The Vibrators special with John Ellis in conversation with David Eastaugh Ellis was a co-founder of the pub rock band Bazooka Joe in 1970 and a founding member of the punk rock band The Vibrators. He formed The Vibrators in 1976 while still at art school studying illustration. The Vibrators released two albums with Ellis and toured extensively. Ellis left the Vibrators in 1978 to form the short-lived group Rapid Eye Movement, before embarking on a solo career in 1979, releasing a couple of singles, one of which, "Babies in Jars" (a live Rapid Eye Movement recording) reached #34 on the UK Indie Chart.[2][3] In 1980, Ellis toured with Peter Gabriel on his "Tour of China 1984", and he appears on the album Peter Gabriel 4. From 1982 onwards, he recorded a number of albums with Peter Hammill, and toured with Hammill (off and on) from 1981 until 1989. From 1981 until 1984, he was a member of the K Group with Peter Hammill. Hammill was "K" (on vocals, piano and guitar), Nic Potter was "Mozart" (on bass guitar), Guy Evans was "Brain" (on drums), and Ellis was "Fury" (on backing vocals and guitar).[4] The Peter Hammill album The Margin is a registration of live-concerts by the K group. Between late 1990 and 2000, Ellis was a member of the punk rock band The Stranglers, starting with the album Stranglers in the Night.[1] During that period he also created music for European Art exhibitions and several short films. Ellis left the Stranglers in 2000. He is an exponent of the E-bow guitar. Ellis has contributed to the recordings of Judge Smith, a founding member of Van der Graaf Generator. In 2005, Ellis formed a community organisation called 'The Luma Group', that delivers arts based training and workshops. In 2009, Ellis started his own record label, Chanoyu Records, in order to release his own music. The first release was Wabi Sabi 21©, an album of electronic instrumentals inspired by the Japanese Tea Ceremony.

The podcast has returned! On this new episode I sit down with Guy Evans who wrote one of the best professional wrestling books I have ever read. The book is about the rise and collapse of WCW. Guy and I have a great wrestling conversation about what made WCW special, what caused it's downfall, the key players, and where wrestling in is 2020.
Since WCW folded in 2001, there have been countless accounts of what went wrong. There have been many opinions shared by fans and outsiders alike as to why they stopped watching or caring. But there has been nothing quite like Guy Evans' comprehensive insight into the Nitro era. And in a very special chat recorded on May 23, the man himself joined us from New York via Skype to discuss the making of the book, how it affected his enjoyment of wrestling and potentially writing a follow-up. For die-hard WCW nuts and wrestling nostalgists alike, this is an hour and a half's listening you won't regret!

As a consequence of the heated ratings competition between World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), the spectacle had taken over Monday nights on prime-time cable television. But in a departure from the family-friendly programming produced by the last industry boom - the 1980s wave, which made household names of Hulk Hogan, 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and Andre the Giant - the new era of wrestling combined stunning athleticism with a raunchy sex appeal, engrossing story lines and novel production techniques that reflected a changing society and its shifting values. Once again, wrestling was a ubiquitous phenomenon - only this time, it seemed as though the fad would never end. With both WCW and WWF expanding into other forms of entertainment - movies, video games, music and the like - the potential for growth appeared to be limitless. But with uncertainty surrounding its corporate future, and increasingly uninspired programming eroding its audience, WCW stood on the verge of collapse. Three years into a five-year plan devised by its charismatic leader - a former Blue Ribbon Foods salesman named Eric Bischoff - the company whose unexpected ascension initiated the entire boom was operating on borrowed time. For by the end of the five-year plan, WCW ceased to exist. But NITRO is a story about much more than WCW and the Monday Night Wars. It is a story of an era, a time in which the media and cultural landscape precipitated - and later supported - pro wrestling's mainstream popularity. It is a story of how a company made in the image of an intuitively brilliant risk-taker betrayed its original promise. It is a story of how a handful of men, each struggling with their own limitations, facilitated a public obsession that changed television forever. And so, with the inside knowledge of a journalist, the perspective of a historian, and the passion of a fan, author Guy Evans provides a fresh look at an unfortunate inevitability - the downfall of World Championship Wrestling. Bolstered by exclusive interviews with over 120 former TBS and WCW employees, NITRO is the definitive picture of the last wrestling boom. Guy Evans is an unsung hero of sorts. Based in Cardiff he has been a presence in the wider electronic music community for over twenty five years, however, it is only more recently that his own music has started to amass the respect and credibility which it has always deserved. A few years back I was introduced to his music by one of the team behind All Caps in Rubadub in Glasgow, at the time they were wholeheartedly excited by what they described as an "old school head" who had been sending music to them. Guy Evans would later to go on to release on the label and has since progressed on to Hypercolour, Cejero, NORD Records and more...

In this free preview clip of the second and final episode of our deep dive Patreon series on the sale of WCW, Kris and David take a look at WrestlingObserver.com's ongoing coverage of the cancellation of WCW programming over the course of a few days in March 2001. This is when everything came to a head, with the Fusient Media Ventures deal just about dead and World Wrestling Federation Entertainment becoming the obvious lead suitor, and it's fascinating to look back at. And if you want to hear what Kris found at the end of the clip? You know what you have to do.To hear the whole show, you need to become a Between The Sheets patron at the $5/month level or higher by going to Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets.-----Full show description:It's April 2021, and you know what that means: The 20th anniversary of the final episode of WCW Worldwide and thus the second and final part of our series on the sale of (the assets of) World Championship Wrestling to Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation Entertainment. But taking all of the contemporaneous reporting together paints a very specific picture, one that we did not anticipate: That Jamie Kellner was very obviously scapegoated for the cancellation of WCW programming after being maneuvered into a scenario where he had no other realistic choice...all while having to juggle Joss Whedon calling him out publicly in the middle of negotiations to renew "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."All that and much more, including a LOT of Torch reporting that lines up nicely with what Guy Evans found, Lenita Erickson sabotaging Eric Bischoff's last-ditch meeting with Fox to try to save the Fusient deal, Linda McMahon and Stu Snyder's media call after announcing the WCW purchase, just how badly WCW's 200 employees were treated by AOL Time Warner at the end, and other topics too numerous to list here. This is one of the best shows we've ever done, and we hope you feel the same way.Timestamps:0:00:00 Week of 3/5/2001 (Fusient's investor pulls funding.)0:33:35 Week of 3/12/2001 (WCW programming is cancelled.)1:31:47 Week of 3/19/2001 (Cancellation fallout/sale to WWFE.)3:29:25 Week of 3/26/2001 (Final episode of Monday Nitro.)4:38:48 Week of 4/2/2001To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.
