Episode Notes S6E14 - Join us as we chat with the legendary Julian Richings. He'll be in the house telling tales from Supernatural to Doom Patrol and beyond. Julian Richings (born 30 August 1956) is a British-Canadian character actor, having appeared in over 225 films and television series. He is best known for his appearances in a variety of horror films, including Cube, Wrong Turn, The Witch, Beau is Afraid, Ejecta, and Anything for Jackson, as well as for portraying Death in the dark fantasy series Supernatural. After touring the United States with a British stage production, Richings moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1984. Within five years, he had become a regular on the second season of the War of the Worlds TV series. In the 1996 film Hard Core Logo, he played the bitter, aging, punk rock legend Bucky Haight. He appeared at the opening of the 1997 film Cube.In 1999, he appeared in the science fiction film Thrill Seekers. In 2000, he appeared as Bellanger in The Claim, and earned a Genie Award nomination for best supporting actor. He was a member of the repertory cast of the A&E TV original series A Nero Wolfe Mystery (2001–02). Dramatic roles include stagehand Mr. Turnbull in the 2004 film Being Julia. He appeared as Orr, a cruel loan shark in the 2004 Canadian film The Last Casino. In 2006, he appeared in a brief speaking role as the Mutant Theatre Organiser in X-Men: The Last Stand, and played a vampire killer alongside in the direct-to-DVD horror film The Last Sect. In 2007, Richings played a driver in the film Shoot 'Em Up, a dissipated and aging punk rocker in The Third Eye, transvestite psychologist Dr. Heker in The Tracey Fragments, and a number of small roles in other films, including Skinwalkers and Saw IV. He appeared in the 2008 film The Timekeeper. That year, Richings was nominated for another Dora Award for his performance in The Palace of the End. Richings made an appearance in the 2010 fantasy film adaption Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lighting Thief as Charon, the ferryman of Hades.[10] That year, he began a recurring villain role on the horror comedy series Todd and the Book of Pure Evil.[6] From 2010 to 2015, he portrayed Death in the hit dark fantasy series Supernatural. He was also Death in the short film Dave v. Death (2011). The cursed year that was 2021 has come to an end and Lee felt like going out on a more positive note. Think about it; David Cronenberg is Bea Arthur, the core figure and ringleader. Denis Villeneuve is Rue McClanahan, the diva who is also (let's face it) kinda slutty (he just can't seem to keep from getting in bed with our American cousins). Guy Maddin is Betty White, the kooky one. And Arthur Lipsett is Estelle Getty, the grump. Whether a film fits into The Golden Girls paradigm should now and forever be the standard by which all Canadian cinema is judged. All else should be expelled from the country and labelled as... oh I don't know, Belgian.

The film stars Stephen McHattie (Watchmen, The Fountain), musician/actor Henry Rollins (frontman of Black Flag, Feast, Lost Highway), Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers, Cape Fear) and Tomis Lemarquis (Blade Runner 2049, Snowpiercer). Stephen McHattie: Stephen McHattie was born on February 3, 1947 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada as Stephen McHattie Smith. He is an actor and director, known for Pontypool (2008), The Fountain (2006) and Watchmen (2009). He is married to Lisa Houle. They have three children. He was previously married to Meg Foster. Lisa Houle is known for her work on Pontypool (2008), Flashpoint (2008) and Haven (2010). This week Terry reconnects with Headstones lead singer. Hugh Dillon They first met acting on the set of Director Bruce McDonalds second film Hard Core Logo.  Hugh’s acting career has grown to include series lead roles in Flashpoint, Durham County plus feature roles in Degrassi: The Next Generation, Yellowstone, and  Twin Peaks.  Hugh was the leader of  Kingston rock band The Headstones from 1987 to 2003. He attended school with Gord Downey and members of The Tragically Hip.  The Headstones reformed in 2011 and have managed to survive their excesses.  Hugh has found a balance between acting, music, and sobriety that at times must feel like a minor miracle.  The Headstones' latest release is PeopleSkills.

Bruce McDonald is an award-winning Canadian filmmaker and director based in Toronto and Nick Craine is an acclaimed graphic artist who calls Guelph, Ontario home. McDonald’s fifth film was an adaptation of Michael Turner’s novel, Hard Core Logo, and chronicled a first wave punk rock band’s disastrous reunion tour across Canada. The influential 1996 film was an underground hit; even Quentin Tarantino became smitten with it, securing its U.S. distribution rights. The next year, Craine’s graphic novel adaptation of McDonald’s film was published and, to commemorate its 20th anniversary, House of Anansi has issued an expanded edition of Craine’s Hard Core Logo: Portrait of a Thousand Punks, and the occasion is being marked with book launch events and screenings of the film. I met with Bruce and Nick at Bruce’s Toronto office recently and we discussed how they first met some 25 years ago, the work of comic artist Chester Brown and other underground comic artists, making road movies and graphic novels, Canadian content and hockey, the weird but cool resonance of Hard Core Logo 20 years later, the rise of mockumentaries in a world obsessed with fake news, the Bucky Haight song “Never Done,” and much more. Episode 27 of See Hear Podcast is ready for your aural consumption. So Tim, Bernard and Maurice are discussing a film about a band who go on the road and…well…shit happens. Could be any number of films? It’s a mock-documentary. Hmmm….still leaves a couple of choices. Okay, it’s been cited as one of the greatest ever films out of Canada. Okay, now you just have to know that we’re talking about Hard Core Logo. Bruce McDonald released this gem in 1996 about a punk band that reform to do a benefit gig, then follow up with five gigs through western Canada.  Different ambitions and egos collide, medications go missing, goats get sacrificed, and home truths get told. The film is about friendships, trust, putting on a macho face to cover insecurity, and investigates whether you should be able to have the same ambitions and life at 35 year old, as when you were a 17 year old. Not without humour, but it is certainly a darker film than the one it’s frequently compared to, “This Is Spinal Tap”. The See Hear crew really enjoyed recording this episode for you. Nothing is more punk than using words like "milieu". Scratch that: nothing is more punk than Emilio Estevez with a dangly earring.P.S.
