Financially Simple - Business Startup, Growth, & Sale

I've been in the business game for over 30 years, and in that time, I've helped many business owners sell or buy businesses (I also wrote The Ultimate Sale and Your Baby's Ugly to tell the tale). However, it's one thing to write about an event and another to go through it yourself; so, when I sold my companies, I was reminded of the key principles all business owners need to consider when preparing for great business change—whether they're about to launch a new product or sell a company. In today's episode, I share the key lessons I've learned from selling my businesses. I explain why preparing your team is vital when selling your business. I discuss why your customers are your most essential source of lessons when undergoing any kind of organizational transition. I also highlight the role of attitude in a successful business sale and underscore the importance of strategic planning in a business owner's career.   “As you go through transitions and major events, your customers will be your greatest source of learning.” - Justin Goodbread   This week on the Financially Simple Experience: My first trip to the Rocky Mountains in Montana The failure rate of businesses when undergoing great transitions Preparing and supporting your team through times of great change in business The importance of increasing employee engagement Letting your team be the driver of change Preparing your customers through organizational change and communicating with them The value of knowing your customers and overcommunicating with them The role of attitude in successful business transitions Being ready for extra negotiations in the process of selling your company The three special people you need in your life as a business owner How I almost cost myself six figures in taxes Writing a personal financial plan, a strategic business plan, and getting a best-in-class valuation   Resources Mentioned: Book: The Ultimate Sale: A Financially Simple Guide to Selling a Business for Maximum Profit by Justin Goodbread Book: Your Baby's Ugly: Maximize the Value of Your Business or You'll Have Nothing to Sell by Justin Goodbread Book: The Dream Manager: Achieve Results Beyond Your Dreams by Helping Your Employees Fulfill Theirs by Matthew Kelly   Our Favorite Quotes: “If your customer is with you—if they're engaged with you and your service—they will want to see you succeed as well.” - Justin Goodbread “Through any time of change initiative, let your team drive the change; let your team be the catalyst. Financially Simple - Business Startup, Growth, & Sale

“If you had limited time and resources, what would you do tomorrow that you're not doing today?” This is a question I've thought a lot about since 2021—a time when my wife and our family experienced severe ups and downs that had us reevaluating what's truly important to us. As we evaluated what mattered the most to us, one word kept coming back to me: “impact.” It has always been my mission to share knowledge and help people reach their destination; once I remembered this, I decided that it was time to make a change in my life and business. In this episode, I share some of the biggest news in my business career. I reveal why only less than 20% of business owners sell their companies and explain the reason I wrote The Ultimate Sale and Your Baby's Ugly. I explain why we hired consultants for our businesses and reveal what they taught us about the wealth gap we needed to fill. I also describe our fight with COVID-19 and underscore how the experience inspired me and my wife to reevaluate what truly matters to us.   “Life is hard, but life is good; we are blessed beyond measure. It could be frustrating, but it doesn't have to be. Let's continue making our lives financially simple.” - Justin Goodbread   This week on the Financially Simple Experience: Impacting people's lives and why cemeteries are the saddest places for me The reason I wrote Your Baby's Ugly and The Ultimate Sale Why only less than 20% of business owners sell their businesses Our fight with COVID-19 and how it impacted our outlook on life What it would take for me to quit and the value of hiring consultants for our businesses Determining our wealth gap to meet our financial goals How I decided to partner with a larger organization and sell my businesses Making the ultimate sale and getting the “best-in-class” valuation   Resources Mentioned: Model Financial Advisors Book: The Ultimate Sale: A Financially Simple Guide to Selling a Business for Maximum Profit by Justin Goodbread Book: Your Baby's Ugly: Maximize the Value of Your Business or You'll Have Nothing to Sell by Justin Goodbread   Our Favorite Quotes: “We can reach our dreams; we don't have to forsake them. We don't have to lose our family, our hobbies, or our identity trying to build wealth.” - Justin Goodbread “We don't have to sacrifice our family, our person, our dreams, or our aspirations on the altar of success.” - Justin Goodbread “You can reach your goals. Honey! I'm Homeschooling The Kids

Sudbury Valley School "For us it made no sense at all to think that you could create citizens of the United States of America - adults who understand the country and respect what it's about - if you place them for the first 12, 16 or 20 years of their lives in a completely autocratic setting. Schools are run like a monarchy...The monarchy decides the rules, the monarchy meets out punishments, the monarchy decides whatever it says is right and you have to conform to it. If you are going to make a school that is appropriate for children to grow into (American) society, it has to give every single child the same rights as adults. It cannot distinguish between children and adults." Daniel Greenberg, Sudbury Valley School No Classes, Curriculum or Grades? Picture this: Your child has started a new school and you're excited because you have found a school that isn't like the others. A school that offers the freedom for your child to pursue their passions. To make mistakes. A place to mix with various ages and ask questions. A school that your child is excited to be at everyday. There are no end of the year exams to be anxious about, no essays to write or grades to tirelessly maintain. No curriculum to follow, classes to attend or subjects required. And no teachers or principals imposing rules or punishment. Does a school like this actually exist?  If there are no classes, teachers, curriculum or grades, what do kids do all day? What would be the purpose of this school? How would they learn to read and write with out classes, curriculum and teachers? Would they ever have a chance at finding a job or getting into college? How would they survive in society if they spent their childhood doing what they wanted all day long? At times I have heard these concerns raised about unschooling. But this is not unschooling. In fact, this is not even a school for unschoolers. Democratic School What if I told you that there are schools whose sole purpose is to provide a place for kids to be truly free and flourish, uninterrupted. Where kids are free to do as they wish the entire day. This means playing in puddles outside, climbing or building forts. Painting, reading, playing music or even playing video games all day long. What would happen if a school ran as a democracy? Where every child and staff member at the school has an equal role managing the school. Where everything is done at the school meeting;  the school budget, rules of behaviour, facilities, and hiring of staff. And it's at the school meeting that every member of the school has an equal role and vote. As well, every member of the school community, from the 4 year old students to 70 year old staff members, play an equal part in the school's judicial system. This all sounds so idealized but can it actually work? Daniel Greenberg says YES, it can work and it has been for over 51 years. Sudbury Valley School Sudbury Valley School in Framingham, Massachusetts has been in existence since 1968. The school began with about 60 students and around 20 founding members, of which Daniel Greenberg was one of. He remains a staff member to this day. Dan says that although each founding member came with their own reason for starting the school, they all shared the same belief; that "human creatures are unique, diverse and have the insatiable desire to figure out the world and what they want to be. Kids are fully formed people...and there is no reason to treat them differently." Sudbury Valley is framed on this belief and the founding principals of the United States. That each individual has the undeniable rights to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The right to pursue a meaningful existence.  That is why students at Sudbury Valley School are free to explore the world. Why there are no grades, subjects or curriculum. Why the student decides mastery. Sudbury Valley School~Kids Are People In this episode Dan shares; The history of Sudbury Valley School and the essential reasons why it exists What has accounted for the school's success How it's democratic structure supports self directed learning What kind of kids fair best at Sudbury Valley School How students learn the "basic skills" Why Sudbury Valley School can not be replicated outside of the United States (even though much effort has been put toward spreading it worldwide) I also asked Dan to address a common misconception that unschoolers seem to have about Sudbury Valley School; that it is the perfect school for unschoolers. We discuss why Sudbury Valley School and Unschooling have NOTHING in common. (Yes, sorry to burst any bubbles) And why Sudbury Valley School creates the most natural way to help a child become fully independent. I would love to hear what you think of this episode. Are you familiar with democratic schools? Do you agree that every child must be given the same rights and freedoms as adults? In order to be part of a true democracy we must be an active part of one growing up? Let the thirst for independence and self expression continue. If you would like to hear from a parent of Sudbury Valley School, listen to my episode with Dr. Peter Gray: https://imhomeschooling.com/free-to-learn-peter-gray/ Resources Essay:Let's Be Clear: Sudbury Valley School and "Un-schooling" Have NOTHING in Common  Sudbury Valley School Website

We take a look at the possible Biological component of religious experience with Dr John C Wathey John C. Wathey is a computational biologist whose research interests include evolutionary algorithms, protein folding, and the biology of nervous systems. From 1991 to 1995, he was a senior applications scientist at Biosym Technologies (now named Biovia), a company that develops molecular modeling software for the pharmaceutical industry. In 1996, he founded his own business, Wathey Research, and since that time most of his scientific research has been funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health. He is currently writing a follow-up work to The Illusion of God's Presence, which explores in detail the neurobiology of religious emotion and behavior. Good Afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. Today our guest is Madeleine Thien, Author of Do Not Say We Have Nothing, her third novel published this month by Norton and currently shortlisted for the Man Booker Award. Madeline was born in Vancouver. Her story collection is Simple Recipes, and she has also written Certainty and Dogs at the Perimeter. Since 2010 she has been part of the international faculty at the MFA program at City University of Hong Kong. So. Do Not Say we Have Nothing. First and usually somewhat daunting to me, there is a family tree. Which sometimes elicits a bit of a shudder. But this family tree is seamless and informative from the outset. A few flipping back and forths and you have a pretty good idea of the cast of characters. In brief summary: There is Big Mother Knife, a boisterous and matriarchal leader of a frequently fractured and torn asunder family. Her husband Ba Lute is equally boisterous and full of strength but in at least superficially, different ways. Swirl, Big Mama’s sister is a lovely woman, whose life is torn apart, as are many in the book and millions in real life by Mao’s cultural revolution. Her husband is Wen the Dreamer, who brings love, romance and the Book of Records, an unfinished series of notebooks around which much of the novel flows. Swirl’s previous life before Wen, is tragic in many ways. Big Mama and Ba Lute have three kids, Da Shan and Flying Bear, both again boisterous and good at heart. Their third son forms a part of one of the two groupings in the book. This is Sparrow an accomplished composer. His cousin Zhuli is a virtuoso violinist whose true heart is her music and she doesn’t waver from that. And his best friend is Jiang Kai, another gifted musician, a pianist whose path is somewhat different. Sparrow’s daughter Ai-Ming and Jiang Kai’s daughter Marie, together work to piece together the past and try to make sense of tragedy, heroism and a society torn asunder by the efforts of one man and the cult of his personality, that led to a conflagration of epic proportions. Maybe that is a mouthful, but it all slides together and forms, through the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, a seamless whole that as we do our work creates a picture of a world that is gone but must be remembered.
