In this episode, Sharuna Verghis shares her journey as a public health researcher, educator, and advocate for migrant and refugee health. She reflects on how her father's deep commitment to social justice shaped her path, leading her to work extensively on migration and health for over two decades. From her early days being part of the participatory research network CARAM Asia to her interdisciplinary research on refugees' access to healthcare, Sharuna highlights the intersections of human rights, public health, and policy. As the co-founder of Health Equity Initiatives, she discusses the urgent mental health needs of refugees in Malaysia and the devastating impact of funding freezes due to recent executive orders. Sharuna also speaks candidly about the resilience of displaced communities, the challenges of advocacy, and the crisis of value-based leadership in global health. She underscores the importance of small acts of kindness and systemic change to address deep-rooted inequalities. Throughout the conversation, she reflects on faith, social activism, and the personal cost of striving for justice. Despite the obstacles, she remains committed to creating meaningful change, drawing strength from the lessons instilled by her father.   Listener Engagement: Discover more about Sharuna via her LinkedIn profile and via the website of her organization Health Equity Initiatives. The Supreme Court is set to consider a case today that could potentially undo Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion in the U.S. The High Court will hear a challenge to a 2018 Mississippi law that would ban most abortions at 15 weeks of pregnancy. Pro-choice advocates and lower courts say that the law violates women's rights. However, pro-life advocates say it is time to change the long-standing precedent regarding abortion. Constitution expert and FOX News Contributor Jonathan Turley previews what he calls "most consequential abortion case in decades," speculates how the more conservative Court could rule and what would happen if Roe v. Wade is actually overturned.   Concern over the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been making waves across the globe and in the U.S. stocks took a dive while health officials issued warnings. President Biden spoke out, telling Americans not to panic and assuring them shutdowns would not be used to combat the pandemic. Dr. Jerome Adams, 20th U.S. Surgeon General and Director of Health Equity Initiatives at Purdue University joins to discuss why we still need more information on the severity of the Omicron variant, why this variant's multiple mutations could be cause for concern, and the need for the federal government to create more sensible policies on COVID-19 while the states make their own choices.   Plus, commentary by former Rep. Jason Chaffetz, host of the Jason in the House podcast.

Supply chain issues are being felt nationwide. Many shelves are empty of common goods and both consumers and retailers are worried things will not improve before the busy holiday shopping season. Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), the top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee, says the problem is being driven by Washington and policies that have led to a labor shortage. Rep. Brady joins the Rundown to explain what social programs he believes are discouraging people to work, why he fears the Democrats' agenda will make matters worse and what can be done to fix the supply issues and our economy   Vaccine mandates have become a central and polarizing issue for many Americans. With the COVID-19 vaccine now widely available, federal employees and the U.S. military have been required to get the coronavirus vaccine, however some states are bucking this trend. On Monday, October 11th, Governor Greg Abbott of Texas issued an executive order that would block any vaccine mandates within his state, even for private businesses. Dr. Jerome Adams, 20th U.S. Surgeon General and Director of Health Equity Initiatives at Purdue University joins to discuss the nuances of COVID-19 vaccine mandates, a recent controversy within the Southwest Airlines pilots union over the vaccine mandates, and his belief the government should not restrict how employers keep their employees healthy. Later, he shares his optimism on the return to normalcy and how soon he expects a COVID-19 vaccine for children.   Plus, commentary by former Rep. Jason Chaffetz, host of the Jason in the House podcast.
