In 2023, we sat down with Jonathan Osborne, an expert in science education to talk about the tools our students (and really all of us!) need to critically evaluate science news and information. Dr. Jerome Adams, MD, MPH, FASA ( https://www.purdue.edu/provost/health/adams.html ) is Presidential Fellow, Executive Director of Purdue's Health Equity Initiatives, and Distinguished Professor of Practice in the Departments of Pharmacy Practice and Public Health, at Purdue University. As the 20th U.S. Surgeon General and a prior member of the President's Coronavirus task force, Dr. Adams has been at the forefront of America's most pressing health challenges. A regular communicator via tv, radio, and in print, Dr. Adams is an expert not just in the science, but also in communicating the science to the lay public, and making it relevant to various audiences. Dr. Adams is a licensed anesthesiologist with a master's degree in public health, and ran the Indiana State Department of Health prior to becoming Surgeon General. In the State Health Commissioner role he managed a $350 million dollar budget and over 1,000 employees, and led Indiana's response to Ebola, Zika, and HIV crises. Notably, Dr. Adams helped convince the Governor and State Legislature to legalize syringe service programs in the state, and to prioritize $13 million in funding to combat infant mortality. As Surgeon General, Dr. Adams was the operational head of the 6,000 person Public Health Service Commissioned Corps ( https://www.usphs.gov/ ), and oversaw responses to 3 back to back category 5 hurricanes, and to a once in a century pandemic. I was recently reading the Fall, 2023 issue of “The Science Teacher” a publication of the National Science Teaching Association. In this issue, I read the section, “Commentary” written by John Suchocki. He wrote an article entitled, “Pathways to Science Literacy.”   The concepts of science and the practices of doing science are not the same.  As science teachers, we should pull the rich practices of science (the ways of doing science) out front and center as a helix wrapping around the core concepts of science.

Witt and Parshall discuss Heretic, some brave anti-Darwin heretics, and a recent scholarly study claiming to show that greater science education and science literacy encourage acceptance of evolution. In this week's podcast, Dale discusses supporting pupils with dyslexia and other needs using the Science Literacy Toolkit with guest is Dr Susie Nyman. Susie teaches a range of students in a post-16 environment. She uses multi-sensory teaching strategies to cover complex topics, to help students learn. Susie is the Curriculum Manager at The Sixth Form College, Farnborough. She is passionate about discovering how children learn and supporting them in ways which enable them to succeed. She has provided training to PGCE students at Kingston University, and in a number of local schools and colleges on teaching strategies. She also delivers talks on multi-sensory techniques around the world.

People often say that we live in the Information Age. But what does that mean? It means that people living today on Earth truly do have the world's knowledge at our fingertips. We can read high-quality scientific research, even before it's published in academic journals. We can look up everything from great lasagna recipes to the latest news about Malaysian politics--and everything in-between. Having the world's knowledge digitized and made available to everyone has truly been a great thing. But it's come with a downside. Not only can we know more than ever, we can also be misled more than ever. That point has become abundantly and dangerously clear during the Covid-19 pandemic when conspiracy theories and lies about the coronavirus have spread worldwide and become believed by millions of people. Tragically, many people have died from believing falsehoods about vaccines, masks, and fake cures for Covid. But what can be done about the situation? Unfortunately, there are no easy answers. One good one, however, is to spread greater awareness of critical thinking so that we can do more than just obtain information, we can acquire knowledge. Teaching critical thinking and science literacy is not just the responsibility of our educators and schools, however, it's something that we can all share in, whether we're government officials or just people talking to our friends and family. In this episode, Matthew Sheffield speaks with Melanie Trecek-King, she's the creator of a new project called "Thinking Is Power," a great an online resource for teaching and learning about critical thinking skills. As they discuss, the website is the product of her experiences teaching biology to students at Massasoit Community College in Massachusetts.
