The Telepathy Tapes has become the most popular podcast in the world. Severely autistic, non-verbal children and adults have apparently always been able to read minds—and they're receiving revelations from God that validate a Messianic Jewish perspective. Our guests today, First Fruits of Zion's Director of Education, D. Thomas Lancaster, and Jeremiah Michael from the Bram Center for Messianic Jewish Learning, are here to untangle the spiritual implications of this phenomenon—is it real? And if so, what is our proper response? – Takeaways – • Katie Asher's journey began with her son Houston's autism diagnosis. • The Telepathy Tapes podcast emerged from a documentary project. • Facilitated communication helps non-speakers express themselves. • The emotional toll of raising a child with autism. • Katie's determination to understand her son led to profound discoveries. • The revelation of Houston's ability to hear thoughts changed everything. • Katie realized the power of thoughts and their impact on reality. • There is a scriptural framework for understanding Houston's abilities. • God works all things together for good, even pain and suffering. • Negative thoughts impact a person's body and spiritual connection to God. • Faith is about believing God and his promises, not just believing in him. • Prayers are forces that assist the spiritual to bring about God's will in the world. • Children have a unique connection to the spiritual realm that defies time and space. • A soul agrees to the path and mission that God gives to it before birth. • Truth exists beyond materialistic perceptions. • Jesus is the Lamb of God and the Messiah. • God's covenant with Israel and love for her is significant and everlasting. • God loves the Jewish people and has extended salvation to the Jew first. • The nature of God's justice is rooted in love and compassion and is greater than our human perceptions. • We are not a body. We are a soul with a body. • Our great challenge and calling is to prioritize love over materialism and ego. – Resources – The Book of Heaven: A Story of Hope for the Outcasts, the Broken, and Those Who Lost Faith https://www.amazon.com/Book-Heaven-Story-Outcasts-Broken/dp/1737898608 The Telepathy Tapes Podcast: https://thetelepathytapes.com Article: I Can Hear Thoughts https://ffoz.org/messiah/articles/i-can-hear-thoughts Katie Asher's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/katie.asher11 Messiah Podcast is a production of First Fruits of Zion (https://ffoz.org) in conjunction with Messiah Magazine. Did you know that one of the best selling books in Latter-day Saint history on Amazon.com was not written by a Latter-day Saint or a historian? It was a controversial book written by atheist Jon Krakauer in 2003 titled, Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith, which still tops the Amazon charts (in Kindle releases) in the category “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” And an adaptation of the book was released as a mini-series in 2022. One of the major premises of the book is that religion is inherently violent. To illustrate this premise Krakauer combines stories from early Latter-day Saint history with the story of a tragic murder in 1984 committed by two former members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Now Krakauer's work has already been repeatedly criticized as a gross caricature of Latter-day Saint history and of religious people in general, but considering the widespread reach and influence of his fundamental premise and the LDS history he chose to support it, we felt like this is a topic that might warrant further investigation.   So today on Church History Matters, Casey and I begin our multi-episode exploration of this question: Does faith in general, and the faith of the Latter-day Saints in particular, lend itself to acts of aggression and violence? What does reflecting on our Church's history—and specifically the violent episodes of our history—teach us about this important question?  For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

Mary-Jayne Blackmore is one of the oldest children of Winston Blackmore, the most famous polygamist in Canada. For decades, her family has been the subject of intense media and legal scrutiny because of her father's 27 wives and 150 children. Their lives have been dissected in documentaries and in court testimony. The name Blackmore has become synonymous with either faith-based persecution by the state or with cult-like religious fundamentalism that victimizes girls and women. But for Mary-Jayne, these kinds of black-and-white portrayals miss so much about what it's been like being a Blackmore. To learn more:Balancing Bountiful: What I Learned About Feminism From My Polygamist Grandmothers by Mary Jayne BlackmoreThe Bishop of Bountiful B.C. by the CBC's Fifth EstateUnder the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon KrakauerCredits: Arshy Mann (Host and Producer), Jordan Cornish (Producer), Noor Azrieh (Producer), Annette Ejiofor (Managing Editor), Karyn Pugliese (Editor-in-Chief) Additional music from Audio NetworkSponsors: Canva, Athletic Greens If you value this podcast, Support us! When Mary Allen falls in love with Jim Beaman, she doesn't know he has a drug problem, but she does sense demons and angels around him, like "a disturbance in the air, a sound just beyond the register of human hearing." And when Jim—discouraged and depressed, struggling with his addiction—kills himself a year into their relationship, Allen is unable to let him go. In her desperate attempts to recover from the loss, she uses a Ouija board and automatic writing to pull back from reality into the dark recesses of her mind, where she believes she can find him. The result is a mesmerizing trip across the boundaries between this world and the afterlife, a journey that leads her to the brink of insanity and ultimately back to herself.Mary Allen is a memoir and fiction writer whose themes are spiritual and psychological healing, love, the nature of life and death, and the ways our states of consciousness intersect with our experience of reality. Her writing — and broad range of writing topics — reflect her belief that the personal and the practical, the painful and the numinous, the spiritual and the ordinary are all blended together in our lives and cannot be separated from one another without at least part of the truth being lost.

Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith is a nonfiction book by Jon Krakauer that was recently adapted and released as a limited streaming series on Hulu. In the book and TV series, two stories are examined: the origin and evolution of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and a modern double murder committed in the name of God by brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who subscribed to a fundamentalist version of Mormonism. In the years prior to the murder, Ron and Dan Lafferty became increasingly interested in Mormon groups that accepted many beliefs of the original LDS church, including polygamy and direct communication with God. Ron and Dan were charged for the throat-slashing homicides of their sister-in-law Brenda Wright Lafferty and her 15-month-old daughter, Erica, that occurred on July 24, 1984. Ron, a self-proclaimed prophet, claimed to have received a revelation from God in which he was instructed to "remove" several people, including the two victims. Every church, every denomination and every religious group has its own broken past, scars and ugliness, but is the LDS church just like any other Christian denomination? Speaking of which, are Mormons just other Christians that happen to have a different form of practice and worship, like Baptists, Methodists, or Presbyterians? Or was the church actually founded on something completely different than Biblical Christianity?
