There is a good chance you have thought your cellphone was ringing or vibrating when it wasn't. It seems weird and makes you wonder why it is such a common experience for people. This episode begins with an explanation.  https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20130701-why-you-feel-phantom-phone-calls Here are three things many of us wish were different in our lives are: We wish we had more friends; we wish we didn't worry so much; we wish we were more confident. If any or all of those apply to you, you will want to hear my guest Helen Thomson. She is a writer and consultant who is author of This Book Could Fix Your Life. (https://amzn.to/3p2oERA). Helen researched these topics in depth and joins me to offer some very practical strategies to address these three common concerns. You most certainly have experienced awe and wonder in your life. It's that feeling when you first see the Grand Canyon or you see an incredible rainbow or when you see your own child minutes after being born. That is awe. What we often don't pay attention to is that there is wonder and awe in a lot of things we see and experience every day – if we just take time to notice. And when you do, that feeling contributes to your overall health and happiness. Allen Klein, author of The Awe Factor (https://amzn.to/3wGSwWh) explains how to capture that sense of awe and wonder in your everyday life and explains the interesting research that shows the benefits. Many of us are afraid of bees because we don't want to get stung. That's fair. And you probably should be afraid of killer bees or murder hornets. But what about those everyday honeybees? Are they dangerous? Listen as I reveal some truths and myths about bees and just how dangerous they really are. https://www.pestworldforkids.org/pest-guide/bees/ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! This episode is a real treat for anyone interested in a more person-centred way of delivering support. The conversation is with Helen Thomson, the Deputy Chief Executive of the Calico Group, an independent charity group which operates in the northwest and does everything from house building to employment support to helping people with drug and alcohol addiction. Andrew and Helen cover a lot of ground including how the Calico group is able to integrate the services they provide to ensure people get the seamless help they need. They do this through a focus on internal data sharing and ensuring trusting relationships and an understanding of all available services provided are in place across the organisation. Its all about not putting anyone in a box but rather offering them the tailored support they need. The Calico group also understands the multiple benefits of giving opportunities to people with lived experience to participate in the delivery of services. Who better to connect with and guide someone looking to reduce their dependence on drugs and/or alcohol than someone who has been on that journey. Helen also talks about the importance of taking controlled risks in the delivery of public services and the wonderful concept of “reverse mentoring”. Enjoy it!

Madeleine Dyer is a writer, actor, director, and producer, whose body of work includes the 2017 comedy series Sexy Herpes, the acclaimed comedy series Colin from Accounts, where she worked with her sister Harriet Dyer, and now her latest film, A Savage Christmas, out in cinemas on 16 November 2023.A Savage Christmas tells the story of the Savage family as they meet for a sweaty summer Christmas in Queensland. After years of estrangement, trans woman Davina, played by Thea Raveneua, returns home with her partner Kane, played by co-writer Max Jahufer. Davina's well meaning parents, James (played by David Roberts) and Brenda (played by Helen Thomson), are still coming to terms with her transition and in a distinictly Aussie boomer-ish fashion, they struggle to understand the importance of pronouns and transitioning.Davina naturally expects her transition to be the focus of the family dinner, but her brother Jimmie Jr (Ryan Morgan) brings a cyclone of disruption along his way with a looming debt he needs to pay to a gangster (played by Gary Sweet). Thrown into the mix is their sister, Leila (Rekha Ryan), who is yet to tell her family about the imminent divorce she's going through. Chuck a dodgy Uncle Dick (Darren Gilshenan) and a frail Pomeranian into the mix and you've got your regular old Aussie Christmas.A Savage Christmas is a ridiculously funny and brilliantly scripted comedy that feels like a breath of fresh air. Performances across the board are exceptional, with Thea Raveneua and Max Jahufer both giving stellar debut turns. Hopefully we see more from them in the future. Equally great is Ryan Morgan who manages to bring a level of compassion to a familar character-type, while screen legends David Roberts, Helen Thomson, and Darren Gilshenan balance the bonkers with the grounded. In the above interview, Madeleine talks about the creation of the script with co-writers Max Jahufer and Daniel Mulvihill, what it means to be able to present an authentic Queensland summer on screen, and how she intends to forge a career in comedy on screen in Australia. To listen to other episodes, visit www.TheCurb.com.au. We're going to take this Wednesday episode and have a fantastic conversation about an intense, Oscar-nominated film, with an amazing director and actor. If you haven't seen it, you need to! We are talking about Elvis being in the building! I'm your host Michael R. Herst and I'm here with my lovely wife and co-host Diane. We're going to review Elvis – the 2022 biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Austin Butler! Welcome to One More Thing Before You Go.Elvis the movie – it is an ambitious and visually stunning film that tells the story of one of the most iconic musicians of all time. The film follows Elvis from his teenage years through his rise to fame, and his struggles as he faces the pressures of life as a celebrity, while maintaining a complex relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Austin Butler's portrayal of Elvis is nothing short of brilliant. His performance captures the essence of Elvis – the music, the energy, the charisma. It is very clear that Butler studied the original recordings, as well as Elvis's mannerisms and movements to bring an authenticity to the role. He is supported by a talented cast that includes Tom Hanks as Col. Tom Parker, Helen Thomson as Elvis' beloved mother, Richard Roxburgh as Elvis' troubled father, Vernon Presley, and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla. This is a stunningly well-crafted and emotionally-affected portrait of the life and career of the King of Rock and Roll, from his humble beginnings in poverty-stricken Tupelo, Mississippi, to becoming one of the 20th century's most iconic and influential figures. Elvis's inspiring story is brought to life with a mix of dynamic visuals and a captivating soundtrack. Butler is able to bring out Elvis' complexity, showing him as a passionate artist, a rebellious rebel, and a devoted family man. He gives a mesmerizing performance that captures Elvis' unique blend of charisma, vulnerability, and ambition. Baz Luhrmann's direction is remarkable. He creates an atmosphere of nostalgia and glamour, while still doing justice to the story of Elvis's life. Luhrmann captures the highs and lows of Elvis's career, and his struggles with fame, with a real sense of empathy.Overall, Elvis, the 2022 biopic, is a powerful and poignant drama about one of the most iconic figures in all of music. Luhrmann's direction, Butler's performance, and the stellar cast all come together to create an unforgettable film. It's a must-see for any fan of Elvis Presley, and a powerful reminder of the importance of his legacy. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacyPodcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy

Director: Baz Luhrmann Screenwriter: Baz Luhrmannn, Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce Starring: Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Olivia DeJonge, Helen Thomson, Kelvin Harrison Jr. Runtime: 2 hour 39 minutes Synopsis: From his childhood in Tupelo, Mississippi to his rise to stardom starting in Memphis, Tennessee and his conquering of Las Vegas, Nevada, Elvis Presley becomes the first rock 'n roll star and changes the world with his music. Ro is joined by Kriss and she talks about what worked and what didn't for the latest from Baz Luhrmann. This film is a mixed bag in terms of what it brings for telling the story of Elvis. It's interesting what parts and roads they do go down and which ones they avoid all together. The cast is really the standout with Austin Butler nailing the role of Elvis. This film is more about Tom Hank's Tom Parker and he does a great job in his role as well. The cast lives up to expectations, unfortunately the story just doesn't.    Like what you hear? Or is it morally questionable if you’re in a loving, committed relationship? Everyone remembers their first teenage crush - that feeling of butterflies in the stomach and uncontrollable blushes. As we age, crushes still occur but they tend to be a guilty secret. But are there benefits to having a crush? Facebook introduced a secret crush feature in December last year and it is claimed that crushes can induce mood-boosting chemicals. Should we see crushes as normal, exciting and harmless ways of understanding ourselves and our needs? Or is it morally questionable if you’re in a loving, committed relationship? Emma is joined by Debra Waters, who won the Bridport Prize last year for her short story "Oh Hululu" about an adult crush, and Helen Thomson is a science journalist and author whose new book is called 'This Book Could Fix Your Life' in which she shares her advice on affairs of the heart. Yesterday, the eyes of America were mainly on one woman. Congresswoman Liz Cheney was one of ten Republicans who crossed the floor and voted with the Democrats to impeach President Trump for the second time, something that has never happened before to a President. A key trigger in all of this was, of course, the storming of the Capitol Building last week. Cheney laid blame firmly at the feet of President Trump and criticised his role in stoking the attack. So who is Liz Cheney and is she the political heroine some are saying she is? Is she trying to save the Republic from doom and destruction at its most desperate hour? Emma talks to Amy Pope, former deputy home security advisor to President Obama An estimated 30,000 migrants and refugees have lost their lives in the Mediterranean in the last fifteen years. One of the largest shipwrecks took place in October 2013 when a boat went down off the Italian island of Lampedusa, killing 366 migrants on board. A second tragedy, with an even larger loss of life, happened in April 2015 when a boat sank carrying 1000 refugees and migrants travelling from Libya to Italy. Cristina Cattaneo, Professor of Forensic Medicine at the University of Milan, has spent the last five years voluntarily running a project with others to identify just some of those who died. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has a new chair. Her name is Kishwer Falkner. The EHRC's most recent and high-profile investigations have been into pay at the BBC and anti-Semitism within the Labour Party. Its twitter tag line says that it’s here to “to stand up for freedom, compassion and justice in our changing times”, but it has its critics too. The Women and Equalities Committee once said it needed to overcome its ‘timidity’, and be ‘bolder’. That was in 2019, so has it?

Ever feel good about saving a spider because you took it out of your house and put it outside rather than killing it? It seems like a noble thing to do. But what you may not know is what is likely to happen to that spider once you put it outside. This episode of the podcast starts with that interesting explanation. (http://www.burkemuseum.org/blog/curated/spider-myths)You probably don’t think about it much but the way your body heals itself from illness and injury is really remarkable. We are learning more and more about how the healing process works and how to enhance it. Joining me to shed some light on all of this is Wayne Jonas, MD, professor of medicine at Georgetown University and author of the book How Healing Works. (https://amzn.to/2JB911l )We all make typos when we write emails. But what you probably realize is that those typos alter the impact of your message – sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way. Listen as I explain. (https://www.aol.com/2015/06/01/your-email-typos-reveal-more-about-you-than-you-realize/)How you perceive your world is different than everyone else because your brain is so different than everyone else's. One great way to understand those differences in our brain is to look at some people with peculiar brain disorders. Science writer Helen Thomson author of the book Unthinkable: An Extraordinary Journey Through the World’s Strangest Brains (https://amzn.to/2M6kswj) introduces you to a woman who gets lost going from her kitchen to her bathroom EVERY single time as well as the doctor who actually feels other people’s pain. It’s important to hear this because it gives you a clue as to why your brain sees a very different reality than mine or anyone else's. Plus Helen offers some brain enhancing techniques you can use that she has learned from the science.
