In this episode, we take a journey back to the 80s to explore Device's only album, '22B3', the choice of this week's guest co-host, our antipodean based pal, Crag! We delve into the album's rich synth-pop-rock sound and discuss why it remains an underrated gem. The key member of this act is the overlooked, yet all time great pop rock songwriter Holly Knight. She was the mastermind behind many iconic hits from the likes of Tina Turner, Bonnie Tyler, Heart and penned songs for Kiss, Bon Jovi, Cheap Trick, Meatloaf and so many more. On 22b3, she takes centre stage and we use this episode to investigate her influential yet often overlooked contributions. As we go through each track, we highlight the distinctive 80s production techniques, unique sounds, and memorable melodies. Crag shares insights into the equipment used and provides some industry context, which makes for a fascinating deep dive into 80s music culture. From discussing the album's standout tracks like 'Hanging on a Heart Attack' to exploring the various musical influences and collaborations, this episode is packed with intriguing details and anecdotes. We also connect the album to wider music histories and trends, giving listeners a thorough understanding of its place in music lore. As always, we wrap up with our Nexus, this time linking Device to Debbie McGee in a surprisingly twisted route through music and pop culture history. If you're a fan of 80s music, keen on unsung musical heroes, or simply love a good musical anecdote, this episode is a nostalgic treat you won't want to miss. 00:00 Introduction and Greetings 01:26 Listener Suggestions and Album Selection 02:56 Patreon and Membership Perks 05:25 Political Commentary and Americana 09:29 Album Discussion: Device - 22B3 16:49 Holly Knight's Career and Contributions 38:13 Paul Engeman and the Band's Background 47:37 Introduction to Marauder and George Tukto 47:52 Technical Credits and Chart Performance 48:33 Musical Equipment and 80s Sound 50:08 Diving into the Tracks 50:43 Track Analysis: Hanging on a Heart Attack 54:43 Track Analysis: Who Says 57:05 Track Analysis: Pieces on the Ground 58:50 Track Analysis: Tough and Tender 01:01:24 Track Analysis: When Love is Good 01:03:39 Track Analysis: Didn't I Read You Right 01:06:04 Track Analysis: Fall Apart, Golden Heart 01:09:10 Track Analysis: I've Got No Room for Your Love 01:11:42 Track Analysis: Who's on the Line 01:14:11 Track Analysis: Sandstone, Cobwebs and Dust 01:16:44 Conclusion and Final Thoughts 01:24:21 Nexus Segment: From Device to Debbie McGee 01:32:20 Closing Remarks and Upcoming Guests

Fresh from his success in the Children In Need Strictly Come Dancing 2019 Special (which Kevin and his partner, Maisie Smith won!), Kevin takes time out of his busy schedule to chat about his creative process. How exactly does he turn an idea into a dance performance? That's the question that he is asked the most often. In this special episode, Kevin takes you through his method of turning a dream into reality; everything from musical choices and production design to choreography, and the importance of making his partners happy. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kevin has won almost all of the famed Strictly Glitterballs now. The only one left for him to win is the Christmas Glitterball, which he hopes to lift this year with Debbie McGee as his partner. Kevin keeps constant notes when he hears a song that he4 thinks would be good for Strictly, or if he comes up with an interesting concept for a dance style. Dance styles and songs need to suit the partner that Kevin finds himself with. This can be a thorough process of really getting to know the person as much as possible. His partner needs to enjoy themselves, and getting to know them properly is essential. All ideas need to be channelled through the “Dance Team”, which comprise set designers, production designers and musicians. This department is expansive and constantly working to reinvent the show each week. Performances are always a two-way conversation between the dance duo and the production team. Ideas are never forced on anyone.  Even the ending of the song itself makes a huge difference. The song always needs a “button”, a climactic note that sends an audio signal to the audience that the song is over, and which also communicates a sense of closing energy. What should be avoided is a fade-out. The moment a show's taping is over on a Saturday night, Kevin must begin work on next week's show, and also the following week's. Choreography is something Kevin concentrates on intensely. Many dancers work differently, but Kevin pores over the music, searching for interesting elements that can help shape his dances. By Tuesday, Kevin and his partner will be working on the core principles of the dance for the weekend. This involves explaining the way that they will connect and the way they will move. Kevin also has to be part of the conversation when it comes to technical decisions, such as camera movements and props. These are all part of the dance's script. Costumes and the live performance by the Strictly band are the final elements decided on, before a full rehearsal of the show itself on Saturday afternoon, mere hours before the show airs live on the BBC. BEST MOMENTS 'That would make a great jive, or that would make a great foxtrot' ‘You're usually about two weeks ahead' ‘You'll be selling ice-creams…' 'That bang on the end is what I call the button' ‘I start to think of the general dynamics of the music' ‘What is the imagery of this number?' 'That's the reason that I like to get the routine into their muscle memory' ‘By that time we've run the routine so many times that hopefully it doesn't feel new' ‘Check your earrings. Check your flies!'   ABOUT THE HOST   Kevin Clifton is a professional dancer who has been performing & competing at the highest level for over a decade. Kevin has worked on shows like 'Burn the floor' & 'Rock of Ages' to 'Strictly Come Dancing' one of the biggest TV shows in the UK which Kevin won in 2018.    CONTACT METHOD Kevin Clifton Instagram Kevin Clifton Facebook Kevin Clifton YouTube See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ranj also talks us through what happened when the cast of 2018 celebrated Stacey and Kevin’s win on Saturday night; yes, Lee Ryan sang some Blue songs and yes, the odd Steps’ tune did get a spin in Faye’s honour. Alongside host Rachel Ward, plus the Telegraph’s Chrissy Amer and Jess McAree, our panel dissect the show dances and look back at their memorable moments from this series. But that’s not all, for this final episode of the series, we’ve got some serious suggestions for potential format changes when Strictly returns next September and our panel has early predictions on which celebrities could get involved in 2019.

On this week's Saturday Live, Richard Coles' guest is a television presenter and media personality whose private life has intrigued the tabloids - Anthea Turner. The sometime 'perfect housewife', Anthea will be fronting the 'Get Britain Crafting' campaign later in the year. This week's poet is Mr Gee, from humble beginnings as a Hip-Hop DJ, Mr Gee has honed his spoken word skills to become one of the stars of the UK poetry scene. We meet Jesse Ruiz, who, as a 27-year-old law student looking for intern work in Chicago, was mentored by a young lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School - Barack Obama. Richard also talks to Thomas Keeper, an estate agent, who recently spent £35,000 on a surgical procedure to extend his legs pushing his height from 5ft 6in to 5ft 10in. As an homage to Valentines day earlier this week, JP Devlin travels to Henley on Thames for a stroll with Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee to learn about the joys of romance. And we experience James Naughtie's Inheritance Tracks. Producer: Sukey Firth.
