Alana Thompson, better known to the world as Honey Boo Boo, broke through on “Toddlers and Tiaras” at the age of six, which led to her family life being chronicled on the hit Reality TV series, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” In a new biopic called “I Was Honey Boo Boo” (premiering on Lifetime on May 17th at 8/7c), Alana herself narrates a fascinating recreation played by actors, and details the cycle of pain brought on by her Mama June's extreme penchant for men, money, drugs and fame; the lack of supervision she had protecting her finances; her dreams of going to college for nursing, and the important role her sister played in raising her. The rise of social media, the cover of magazines and the beauty standards set by society throughout the years made body diversity null, and only certain types of bodies were deemed “acceptable”. Now, body positivism is a movement that has been growing stronger in recent years and it focuses on the inclusion of everyone, regardless of their shape and weight. A positive example of this is Alana Thompson, better known as Honey Boo Boo.

Alana Thompson, star of TLC's “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” grew up in the spotlight. Her and her family first came to the American public in “Toddlers and Tiaras”, a reality show that followed the contestants of a child beauty pageant and their families. We'll be discussing Alana's recent remarks on body positivity and how her mentality has helped her get there even when she has received so much criticism from a young age.  “Take it up with the manager, and the manager is me.” Are you a basic bitch? In this episode, Joey Skladany and I talk about being basic bitches (and that it's ok), we bond over colon-related stories, and Joey reminds us that Honey Boo Boo is just a normal teen. Joey Skladaney is a writer/editor, TV/radio personality, lifestyle expert, former entertainment publicist and author of Basic Bitchen (Aug. 4; preorder here!) Currently, he is editor-at-large at CBS Interactive's Chowhound where he manages the site's food and travel editorial content. His work has also been featured in major outlets like Food & Wine, People, CNET, InStyle, Yahoo!, Travel + Leisure, Lonny, and BuzzFeed. I open the show by confessing to Joey that I have never tried a pumpkin spice latte, but that I do have a great recipe for avocado toast. Joey and I then relate to each other over the fact that we both have stomach issues. He tells me that he has always been very high-strung and OCD. Joey says this OCD contributed to his stomach issues because even the traffic on the way to high school would make it flare-up. After some clarification on what a colonoscopy is, I tell Joey the story of when I pooped my pants as an adult in a taxi. Joey then recalls coming out about sexuality; he says he harbored a lot of anxiety over not coming out in college. He tells me that he chose not to come out earlier because he didn’t want it to impede on his career goals. Joey tells me about covering up his sexuality by using his theater minor to "bro it up" on the phone before coming out. Then Joey opened up about his family; when he turned 16 his parents would bring him a handle of vodka in high school and ask him to please go to a party. Even though he would rather play Sims. Joey then recalls the time he brought a boyfriend home and how his mom still compares everyone to him. Later, Joey talks about his career; after college he became an entertainment publicist and worked on reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and My Strange Addiction. Joey then describes his transition to the food industry. We talk about constructive criticism versus the people of the internet. Joey tells me about how a reviewer of his cookbook said she didn't like the "tone" of his cookbook. Basically, that person is just boring. Stay tuned as we talk about blocking hot people on Instagram, Joey's pot-chocolate trip, and the making of Basic Bitchen. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/emmawillmannshow/support

Rather than seeking conflict, he sought authenticity in the shows he produced. "Trading Spaces" is his most famous one, following by "A Wedding Story," "A Baby Story." These were shows that showed "real" people doing "real" things, rather than the manufactured scenes we now see in the "Houswives Of..." series, "Dance Moms," and "The Bachelor." We open our discussion about Murray's new venture "The WorkShop" and then head right into the reality TV discussion. Hear his thoughts on: binge TV viewing (3:30), being there when cable TV and then reality TV started to expand exponentially (6:20), "The Real World" (6:54), why he sought to produce more positive reality shows (8:14), why he kind of wishes he came up with "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" (10:11), why shows branded as reality TV are rarely real at all (11:30), creating Trading Spaces (12:05), why it is so hard to predict if a show will be a hit (13:30), his favorite reality TV show of the moment (16:10), how social media enhances his job (17:27), if we have reached "peak TV" (19:17), what our next big idea should be in the reality space (22:35) and if we are amusing ourselves to death (23:14). Recorded in the lunch room of a corporate office building in Radnor, PA on February 20, 2019.

In his book Reality TV (Routledge, 2017), author Jon Kraszewski explores reality television’s relationship to the American cityscape. Starting with show such as Candid Camera and An American Family, Kraszewski positions reality television in cities where individuals were able to thrive regardless of social class. In this space, early reality television created a laboratory for individuals. Moving to the early 1990s and beyond, Kraszewski challenges the ways in which reality television persisted in this relationship with the city although most viewers do not have the means to live in cities. Using case studies of how the Bravo network exploits the urban servant, the examination of “Boston” Rob Marino and Tiffany “New York” Pollard as reality show representative of major global American cities, and how shows such as Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Alaska: The Last Frontier, and Swamp People, Krasweski present the complex and often problematic relationships between American urban space and the way in which reality television uses and exploits that space in relation to their characters. Rebekah Buchanan is an Associate Professor of English at Western Illinois University. She researches zines, zine writers and the influence of music subcultures and fandom on writers and narratives. Some folks proudly claim that name. They say it's high time they were redneckcognized. Activate your seat restraints, because tonight’s going to be a bumpy ride through space as the Screeners take a long, hard look at JJ Abrams’ newest addition to the Star Trek franchise. Before we jump to warp, though, let’s take a few minutes to acknowledge that a couple other things did actually happen during the last two weeks.Republicans and Books Relevant in the 21st Century? Who Knew? For starters, John McCain—someone who might not normally be associated with media innovation—introduced a bill to end the time-honored tradition of cable channel bundling. In case the jargon is new, “bundling” is that thing where you get a cable subscription because you want to watch Mad Men and Doctor Who, but you end up subsidizing UFC Fight Night and Here Comes Honey Boo Boo in the process (or, um, vice versa). Turns out McCain’s been working on this for awhile, with little success thus far. Does he have the Screeners’ support? They know they talk about trailers a lot, but Chad can’t resist a quick chat about two he saw during his recent trips to the theater:  Elysium and Gravity. The trailer for Gravity is really just a teaser, and maybe that’s what’s so appealing about it. The other one—well, the other one has Matt Damon. (If you haven’t seen Team America:  World Police, you’re welcome. And don’t worry; we actually do like Matt Damon.)Next, Josh holds true to his roots as a book snob and forces the group to discuss Baz Luhrmann’s vision of The Great Gatsby. In a mini-review of the adaptation, the Screeners touch on the merits of narration, Luhrmann’s tendency toward grandiosity, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s screen presence. Do they think the reboot is worth seeing?A Long, Long TrekUnable to hold back any longer, the Screeners kick off the main event by reciting their Star Trek nerd credentials—after all, you can’t just walk in off the street and review a Trek movie. Chris and Melody win the contest by a long shot. A LONG shot. Josh, knowing a Star Trek conversation can be a tough thing for non-fans, spends some of his introductory time recounting the story of a touching real-life romance stoked by the Federation in hopes of keeping some listeners around...for a little while, at least. Then the fun begins. Many have already weighed in on the movie (spoiler alert for the link), and hatahs gonna hate—as will a certain stripe of fan—but you’ll have to listen to see where the Screeners come down on the latest installment of the beloved franchise. There’s just too much to be said and too little that can be summarised without spoiling “surprises”. We will say this, though:  Josh seems to have some kind of sworn Klingon blood feud with JJ Abrams, and we’re not sure why.As If They Had Any Emotion Left...To cool off from the intensity of a Star Trek review, the four take some time in the Cutting Room Floor to discuss other movies that caused an emotional reaction, but which they wouldn’t want to watch again. United 93 is mentioned more than once, and some other popular and not-so-popular tearjerkers get praised and shunned in the same breath. After a few quick shout-outs to fans, the Screeners sign off. Want to have your voice heard on the show? Drop us a note here or on Facebook; we’ll be watching!

For more about pet ownership back then, check out historian Kathleen Walker Meikle's book Medieval Pets.Do you have spizerinctum (or spizzerinctum) and huckledebuck? These terms for passion and energy, respectively, are fun examples of false Latin, meaning they replicate the look and mouthful of Latin words but aren't actually Latin. Huckledebuck, which can also mean commotion or craziness, has been in use for over one hundred years, but still hasn't been cited in any dictionaries. You ain't just whistling Dixie, and that's the truth! Whistling Dixie, which refers to a wistful carelessness, comes from the song that originated in minstrel shows and from which the South takes its nickname.
