Nikki will be running intimate group rides for up to 6 riders at a time so you can ask her your most burning questions. Tim chats to Dr Kate Baldwin of Valere Endurance about the psychological and physical processes of healing from an injury. We explore the complexities of injury recovery emphasizing the difficulty in managing expectations during the healing process. We discuss the misconception that pain and function improve simultaneously and linearly, and how this can lead to disappointment when progress doesn't match expectations. We highlight that while initial recovery may bring rapid improvement, progress often slows down, and setbacks can occur, which is a normal part of the healing journey. We stress the importance of a multidisciplinary approach when dealing with fractures and other common injuries in endurance athletes, involving sports doctors, physiotherapists, coaches and nutritionists. Additionally, we consider the potential pitfalls of rushing back into activity and the consequences of reintroducing running too soon.  We review the racing from the WTCS race at Cagliari and discuss how that now affects the lineup for Paris 2024. We discuss a recent study which explores the use of AFT (Advanced Footwear Technology), or Super Shoes, during training and competition. The study describes the injuries sustained in amateur runners and we look at what that means for the integration of these shoes into training programmes. We review the racing from IRONMAN Australia and IRONMAN 70.3 St George at the weekend. Power posing is a concept largely popularized by Amy Cuddy, thanks to her viral TED talk and book, Presence, on the subject.  The basic gist is that if we make ourselves feel large, like we are occupying more space–think Wonder Woman pose– then we'll feel more powerful.  Steve Magness is a sport scientist and a track and field coach. He coaches competitors at all levels, including athletes who have competed in the World Championships and the Olympics. He is Head Cross Country coach at the University of Houston, a Lecturer of Strength and Conditioning at St. Mary's University, UK and author of three best-selling books, including the latest: The Passion Paradox. We share excerpts from The Sport Psych Show in which Steve Magness speaks about power posing in science and in practice; how feelings mediate an athlete's performance; challenge vs threat states; the brain/body connection; attention; and the result of failing to develop the psychological side. Jack Moody, Professional Triathlete, is hosting the podcast with Bevan this week. We catch up on the racing from the weekend plus we talk about the “sellout” for the pros at the upcoming IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside race – will this be a nightmare to officiate? We share Sam Long's review of his race at the T100 in Miami and ask do pro athletes have their feet in both camps, despite having contracts with the PTO? We catch up with Graham Brewster, winner of the free race entry to IRONMAN Cairns. Bevan chats to Justin Ralph of Velo Performance – an organisation set up to help people across the spectrum optimise their on-bike position specifically related to their own cycling goals.  Justin Ralph has spent a significant amount of time working with cyclists. In 2017 he transferred to High Performance Sport New Zealand and worked with Cycling New Zealand as a performance physiotherapist and bike fitter. Justin has been to the London and Rio Paralympics, the Tokyo Olympics as well as the 2018 Commonwealth Games and multiple World Championships and World Cups.  Justin's journey from physiotherapy to the niche world of bike fitting and aero testing reveals a unique perspective on cycling performance. He shares his experience in working with a diverse range of cyclists—from everyday enthusiasts to para-athletes and national track teams—and how he tailors bike fittings to enhance both comfort and speed. We discuss the intricate process of adapting bikes for athletes with disabilities and the evolution of aero testing from wind tunnels to real-time track assessments. Rachael Cunningham won the free race entry to IRONMAN New Zealand. We find out more about her. We explore the crucial role of mental fitness in endurance sport and its significance for both performance and recovery. We discuss how athletes handle pre-race anxiety and stress differently and the mental resilience required in elite adventure racing where cognitive stamina and decision-making under duress are as crucial as physical ability. We share insights from an episode of That Triathlon podcast with certified psychologist Stuart Holliday, who specializes in working with endurance athletes. Stuart discusses the o of self-talk and the need for athletes to conduct a robust self-assessment, examining their psychological approach before, during and after races.  We introduce Matt Fitzgerald's book "How Bad Do You Want It?" as a resource for understanding and improving mental toughness in the face of adversity. We examine key concepts such as the central governor theory by Tim Noakes, discussing the role of the brain and mind in athletic performance. We also explore the notion that athletes don't encounter their true physical limits due to a maximum tolerance for perception of effort. While some individuals possess an innate ability to push past their perceived limits, for most, this is a skill that can be developed. We touch on cases where athletes perform significantly better on race day compared to their training sessions, suggesting a psychological component that unlocks higher intensity and effort levels. Lastly, we consider the role of psychology in recovery, discussing practices like yoga nidra and meditation, which can aid in activating the parasympathetic nervous system for improved rest and digestion. Martin Gibala Ph.D. is Professor and Chair of the Kinesiology Department at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. His research on the physiological and health benefits of high-intensity interval training has attracted worldwide scientific attention. In this episode we discuss his work in sprint interval training versus traditional interval training, it's effectiveness plus how each influences an endurance athlete's VO2 max and overall performance.  Bob Seebahor is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, the former Director of Sports Nutrition for the University of Florida and served as a Sport Dietitian for the US Olympic Committee. He has created a free YouTube presentation called the GI Distress Masterclass in which he talks about the root causes of GI distress in endurance sports and discusses ways to improve digestive health. We touch on the significance of hydration, the impact of environmental conditions and the role of psychological stress, plus we examine the importance of implementing different nutrient timing systems and strategies for training and competition. Finally, we help you navigate the complexities of GI distress in endurance sports using insights from Bob Seebohar's masterclass on the subject. The new IRONMAN Pro Series, is a performance-based world series contested over 12 months at 18 designated IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events on the full 2024 IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 professional racing calendar.
