//The Wire//2330Z January 18, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: PAKISTAN RETALIATES IN RESPONSE TO IRANIAN STRIKES. ATTACKS ON RED SEA SHIPPING INCREASE IN FREQUENCY.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: In response to Iranian missile strikes, Pakistan strikes targets in Iran. Last night, ISIS forces in Iraq successfully downed an American MQ-9 Reaper near Baghdad. AC: This is likely a power-projection move that may coincide with recent politics in the region. A few days ago, the Iraqi Parliament voted to expel the United States from their nation. Obviously, the U.S. will continue ignoring Iraqi demands to leave (as this debate has come up several times over the 20-year occupation of Iraq). However, this political move (along with the war in Gaza) will likely result in local insurgent groups being incentivized to carry out more substantial attacks than routine harassment engagements.Red Sea/HOA: Coalition forces continue to strike targets in Yemen. The vessel struck by a Yemeni drone yesterday has been identified as the M/V GENCO PICARDY, an American owned bulk cargo carrier. Today, two separate incidents were reported in the Gulf of Aden. This morning, another American-owned commercial vessel reported observing 4 drones in the western Gulf of Aden, one of which attempted to attack the vessel (unsuccessfully). Separately, a different unidentified vessel was attacked in the eastern Gulf of Aden in a similar fashion (also unsuccessfully).-HomeFront-USA: A Congressional subcommittee has revealed more details of domestic spying. In a letter to a department of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), Rep. Jim Jordan outlines the investigative processes used by the Department of the Treasury (without any warrants or oversight) to spy on Americans. In the letter, USDT is alleged to flag certain financial transactions (via MCC codes) as being indicative of terrorism. Such extremism indicators are very broad, including purchasing firearms, renting cars, sporting goods, etc. In addition to flagging purchases by certain vendors, USDT analysis also includes specific keyword searches of specific transactions, to include words like MAGA and TRUMP. The letter also alleges that the purchase of religious texts is enough for the USDT to flag a taxpayer as potentially being a terrorist threat.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The reports indicating domestic American financial surveillance are not new issues; many scandals have broken out regarding illegal surveillance of taxpayers' purchases over the years. In the Red Sea, the intensification of targeting will likely continue as US airstrikes prove less than effective in preventing attacks on commercial shipping.Analyst: S2A//END REPORT//

When Muqtada al Sadr's party won October's election we asked if he could form an effective government. After eight months of political paralysis, it's clear he could not. But now Iraq's most powerful politician has decided enough is enough. The decision has shocked and confused many. The Sadrist bloc won 73 of 329 seats in October's election. Clearly not enough for an overall majority, but it did put his party in the proverbial driver's seat. The Sairoon alliance was close to forming a government after joining forces with Sunni and Kurdish blocs. But Iran-backed parties blocked the formation. The controversial Shia cleric is a massive opponent of Iran's influence in his country. But what's confusing some experts now is that many of al Sadr's lawmakers will be replaced by Iran-backed parties. Nevertheless he's standing by his decision with some support from the streets. Good morning, this is Toby Sumpter with your CrossPolitic news brief for Tuesday, January 7th, 2020. In response to the US killing of Iranian Terrorist Qasem Soleimani last Friday, the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that the US had committed a grave mistake. On the day of the attack, Iran's Foreign Minister Javid Zarif tweeted that the airstrike was an “act of international terrorism,” suggesting that General Soleimani had been the most effective force fighting ISIS and Al Qaeda. The Foreign Minister said the act was “extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation” adding that “the US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism.” “Soleimani was the international face of resistance,” Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a statement, “and all lovers of resistance will be his avengers.” He added that “harsh retaliation is waiting.” Khamenei has ordered three days of public mourning, according to the AP.  The Daily Mail reports that on Saturday, Iranian General Gholamali Abuhamzeh, a Revolutionary Guards commander in the southern province of Kerman, threatened that Iran had itendified 35 targets for potential strikes and raised the red flags of revenge over every key mosque. Abuhamzeh said vital American targets in the region had been identified a 'long time ago', including ships in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and Tel Aviv. “The Strait of Hormuz is a vital point for the West and a large number of American destroyers and warships cross there … some 35 U.S. targets in the region as well as Tel Aviv are within our reach,” he said, according to Reuters. Trump responded on Sunday via Twitter: “Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American, & badly wounded many others, not to mention all of the people he had killed over his lifetime, including recently.... ....hundreds of Iranian protesters. He was already attacking our Embassy, and preparing for additional hits in other locations. Iran has been nothing but problems for many years. Let this serve as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have... ...targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!” Many commentators pointed out that the threat to strike 52 cultural sites would seem to be a breach of international law. Others were also quick to say that this is the sort of international crisis they feared Trump would blunder into. But Trump continued on Twitter undeterred: Quoting a tweet from Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw who asked what is so controversial about there being repercussions for terrorists attacking the US, Trump said, “They attacked us, & we hit back. If they attack again, which I would strongly advise them not to do, we will hit them harder than they have ever been hit before! Trump followed up with two more tweets on the subject: “The United States just spent Two Trillion Dollars on Military Equipment. We are the biggest and by far the BEST in the World! If Iran attacks an American Base, or any American, we will be sending some of that brand new beautiful equipment their way...and without hesitation! These Media Posts will serve as notification to the United States Congress that should Iran strike any U.S. person or target, the United States will quickly & fully strike back, & perhaps in a disproportionate manner. Such legal notice is not required, but is given nevertheless!”  The US House Foreign Affairs Committee's Twitter account shot back, quoting this last tweet from the President, “This Media Post will serve as a reminder that war powers reside in the Congress under the United States Constitution. And that you should read the War Powers Act. And that you're not a dictator.” It seems that the House is suddenly interested in the constitution again…  On Sunday Iran announced that it is withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal. In exchange for economic sanctions being lifted, Iran had agreed to end all uranium enrichment programs for at least 15 years and submit to various inspections. However, last May, Trump had reinstated sanctions against Iran and states that trade with Iran, effectively ending America's participating in the deal. Iran responded by giving the other nuclear deal signatories 60 days to protect it from US sanctions, threatening to resume production of enriched uranium. Nuclear watchdog IAEA says that Iran has recommenced enriched uranium production. Trump responded to Iran's announcement on Sunday with all caps and an exclamation point: “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon!” Meanwhile the Iraqi Parliament passed a non-binding resolution asking US forces to leave the country, and Reuters reported Monday that the US Marine Corp Brigadier General William H. Seely III, the commanding general of Task Force Iraq had written a letter addressed to the Iraqi defense ministry's Combined Joint Operations Baghdad, stating, “Sir, in deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, CJTF-OIR will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement… We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure.” [This letter was later repudiated by Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who insisted that the US has no plans to withdraw troops, according to Reuters. Trump also said such withdrawal would only be accompanied by severe sanctions.] Finally, on this topic, it's worth noting that a 1996 interview with Joe Biden captures him on a news program insisting strongly that if Iran every attacked a US facility it should be considered an act of war and that ANY retaliation would be warranted. Hmmm… We'll just let simmer for a bit and see if anyone notices. Probably not.  But speaking of fires, Australia continues to be ravaged by the worst wildfires seen in decades. CNN reports that dozens have died and more that 1300 houses have been destroyed, with over 14.7 million acres burned across six states, with 8.9 million of those acres in the hardest hit New South Wales. It's estimated that perhaps a third of the koalas in New South Wales may have been killed by the fires, which has caused some Hollywood elites to speak out in great alarm. But of course you can get more sympathy in Hollywood for koalas than you can for human babies, as evidenced by the applause and tears Actress Michelle Williams received at the Gold Globe Awards on Sunday night, when she announced that she had employed “a woman's right to choose,” implying that she had killed at least one of her children, so that she could pursue a career in acting.  But back to the Australian forest fires, higher than average temperatures, high winds, lightning strikes, arsonists, and the recent legalization of sodomite marriage in 2017 are all blamed by leading scientists. However, what you won't hear in the news is the fact that beginning the 1990s, Bob Carr's liberal Labor government began a massive forest lock-up program. Peter Austin writes at theland.com.au, “Before that "greening" frenzy began, soon after Carr came to office in 1995, national parks and reserves accounted for some 4.8 per cent of New South Wales. Today the total area of the state controlled by the National Parks and Wildlife Service is more than 9pc. In less than 20 years, therefore, the area of national parks and related reserves has virtually doubled, but the resources deployed to manage this vastly expanding empire have not doubled with it. On the contrary, it was revealed last week that even since 2011, successive budget cuts have resulted in the NPWS slashing its staffing of rangers by one-third, thereby impairing its capacity to conduct hazard reduction burns. But before Carr took over, much of the coastal bushland now locked up in national park was prudently managed state forest, where fuel loads were kept down by logging programs, regular thinning and cattle grazing.” Turns out that the GREEN Religion doesn't keep things Green at all. It just results in them turning black. And I'm not just talking about the United Methodist Church. This a lesson in government incompetence. But it's also a lesson in biblical jurisdictions. It is not the Civil Magistrate's job to managed forests. Incidentally, it's not the civil magistrate's job to fund the arts or media or news or education. God did not give those jobs to that office. Therefore, it is disobedience to God and inevitable tyranny for the State to assume those powers. Should Christians care about the environment? Of course. But we should care about it through private ownership of land, and private foundations and associations that will have skin in the game. Personal responsibility is key to success. Bureaucrats and committees cannot be expected to care that much about what doesn't actually belong to them. The other thing to note here is that God commanded mankind to take dominion of the earth and cultivate it. This means in part that the earth needs cultivating. We need godly foresters and loggers and conservationists who understand that just like man is not good all alone and needs a helper, so too, the land is not good all alone and needs gardeners. And the more the GREENIES fail to actually care for the earth, enterprising Christians should be looking for ways to pry the government's fat fingers off the land and return it to private citizens and foundations.  This is Toby Sumpter with your CrossPolitic New Brief for Tuesday, January 7th, 2020. This is Gabriel Rench with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Wednesday, January 8th, 2020. More on Australian Fires Yesterday Toby reported that in the 1990s, Bob Carr's liberal Labor government began a massive forest lock-up program. Peter Austin writes at theland.com.au, “Before that “greening” frenzy began, soon after Carr came to office in 1995, national parks and reserves accounted for some 4.8 per cent of New South Wales. Today the total area of the state, controlled by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, is more than 9 per cent. In less than 20 years the area of national parks and related reserves has virtually doubled, but the resources deployed to manage this vastly expanding empire have not doubled with it. On the contrary, it was revealed last week that even since 2011, successive budget cuts have resulted in the NPWS slashing its staffing of rangers by one-third, thereby impairing its capacity to conduct hazard reduction burns. But before Carr took over, much of the coastal bushland now locked up in national park was prudently managed state forest, where fuel loads were kept down by logging programs, regular thinning and cattle grazing.” So there is that, and now more information has come out that according to the New South Wales Police Force website:  “Since Friday 8 November 2019, legal action – which ranges from cautions to criminal charges – has been taken against 183 people – including 40 juveniles – for 205 bushfire-related offences. Of note: 24 people have been charged over alleged deliberately-lit bushfires 53 people have had legal actions for allegedly failing to comply with a total fire ban, and 47 people have had legal actions for allegedly discarding a lighted cigarette or match on land.” Russel Crowe, due to the fires in his home country Australia, was unable to attend the Golden Globes and accept his award. He instead sent a letter that was read by Jennifer Aniston on his behalf when he was awarded best actor for his work on the series "The Loudest Voice”. In his letter he blamed global warming for the fires. If it was me, I would have blamed the 24 arsonist.  More on Iran The Obama administration really was a foreign policy disaster. One of his biggest blunders, not even sure we can call it that, was the Iranian Nuclear deal.  According to Fortune.com: “The U.S. announced the controversial nuclear deal with Iran on July 13, 2015. At a news conference on January 16, President Obama declared that the U.S. was lifting the first raft of sanctions against Iran. He also stated that the U.S. would return $1.7 billion to Iran, as agreed in the negotiations at the Hague. That same day, Tehran released the U.S. hostages, and the U.S. freed seven Iranians detained for violating financial and other U.S. sanctions on their home country. Hence, the return of the five Americans appeared to be one side of a prisoner exchange with Tehran. But Obama didn't mention that the same day, $400 million was being shipped over 6000 miles for deposit in Iran's treasury.  The shipment was a secret until The Wall Street Journal broke the story on August 2, 2015. Since then, Republicans from Donald Trump to Paul Ryan have assailed the White House for paying a gigantic ransom when government-paid ransom is barred under U.S. law, and for hiding the ploy from a public already highly skeptical of the U.S.-Iran nuclear agreement. President Obama denied the payment to Tehran was a ransom. The White House contends the payment simply settled a decades-long financial dispute...” Some might call this a Quid Pro Quo, but I digress. Our meddling in foreign affairs has been a disaster. We create problems and then we back out, we create more problems then we throw money at them, we create more problems and push democracy on them, we create more problems then we throw troops at them...rinse and repeat. At no point should conventional wisdom tell you that giving Iran $1.7 billion dollars is a good idea. BTW Vox does not think paying Iran $1.3 billion dollars was a scandal.  But think about this. Obama pumps billions of dollars into Iran, and then we are surprised that Trump Drone bombs their head of military operations for killing our troops, US contractors, and attacking our embassy? I heard it put this way, that killing Soleimani was equivalent to killing our head of CIA, FBI, and Secretary of State all in one shot.  We are in this mess because we refuse to obey the word of God. Of course there are all sorts of Just War Theory issues here, but I want to bring this down to this...because this is not often consider when talking about our foreign policies. The bible explicitly commands us not to bribe. Proverbs 21:14 says “A gift in secret subdues anger, And a bribe in the bosom, strong wrath.” Give gifts not bribes, and this should especially apply to the middle east. One last thing about the middle east. On Monday the Iraqi Parliament voted on a non-binding resolution to expel US military from the region. This of course is political as they are trying to appease the Iranian government while allowing for the protection they really want from the US troops. More of course will be developing regarding the Iran/Iraq story, so stay tuned.   Golden Globes If you missed the Golden Globes, like I gladly did, don't worry I still have you covered. To my delight, British comedian Ricky Gervias, was invited to host the Golden Globes. I have followed Ricky for a while, and sometimes his humor really gets my funny bone and other times he gets the trash can. But what is consistent about Ricky, is that he does not care what is cool and what is culturally acceptable, and that is what keeps me engaged with his Twitter account. As you know the Golden Globes is for the Hollywood elite to pat themselves on the back and pretend they have some sort of moral ethos that matters to America. Well, Ricky utterly destroyed that on Sunday night at the Golden Globes. I mean he just took all their logs and shoved them into their eyes beyond repair. For starters he lambaste Hollywood's friendships with Jeffrey Epstein and Harvy Winstein, and then ends with my favorite lines of the whole night:  Using Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show” as his jumping-off point Ricky said: “A superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China…(obviously referring to the production of Apples iPhone and other devices) If you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech. You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. If you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god, and fuck off,” Gervais concluded. It is moments like these where you are grateful for God's common grace in this world, where even unbelievers can smell the massive hypocrisy coming out of rank Hollywood. Hollywood is full of rampant abuse of women, children that grow up in Hollywood regularly tell the tales of the darkness of Hollywood, and the enormous amount of bad storytelling and movie flops that come out of Hollywood is astounding. We often give Christian movies a bad rap, but how many Christian movies come out every year? 2? 5? 10? 20? Well how many pagan movies come out of Hollywood and absolutely flop or are full of lascivious trash? Hollywood by far has the worst record. So, next time you see a Christian movie come out, just remember it was made with no naked women, no compromised actors, and probably produced with only a couple million bucks. Think twice about how you judge that Christian movie, and why you give Hollywood a pass on the quantity of trashy movies that billow out of their cameras. Christian movies need improvement for sure, and if they were putting out 100 movies a year, we might actually think differently about the Christian movie scene. Lastly, I want to bring to your attention what is happening here in Idaho regarding Idaho's fight to end abortion. As you know we have had Scott Herndon, the architect of our end abortion legislation here in Idaho, and the two sponsoring legislators John Green and Heather Scott on our show a couple times in the past two years. This is their second attempt to push end abortion legislation here in Idaho and the momentum is building. I believe they now have six sponsoring legislators, which is really really good. The latest development, is that Scott Herndon's efforts, which began under the umbrella of AbolishAbortionId.com, and they have now started a PAC out of this initiative. The purpose of Abolish Abortion PAC is to make direct financial contributions for re-election and election to the campaigns of legislators and candidates who will fight for the abolition of abortion through the Abortion Human Rights Act bill. If enough money is raised, the PAC can also support legislators and candidates through direct expenses not coordinated with the candidates' campaigns, such as direct mailers, newspaper and radio ads. A financial contribution by "Abolish Abortion PAC" will appear on all of the legislators' campaign finance reports (which people do read) and will send a clear statement that the people of Idaho, through their financial contributions, want abortion ended in Idaho, without compromise. To make your financial contribution to Abolish Abortion PAC, which will in turn be used to support our champion legislators, send a check payable to: Abolish Abortion PAC PO Box 916 Sagle, ID 83860 To stay up on what is going on visit http://www.abolishabortionid.com/. I think this is a great idea, and a good way to put your money where our desires are at and an opportunity to bless legislatures that stick their neck's out for this legislation. So, consider giving to this pack, even $10 so your names are on record for these legislators to see that you care. I know Scott Herndon and he is a godly guy with a great family, and pray God's blessing on the legislative session this coming year. Well that is all for now.   This is Gabriel Rench with Crosspolitic News. You can find this show and all the others on the Fight Laugh Feast Network at Crosspolitic.com or Fightlaughfeast.com. The Lockwood family has been moved out of the 5 star hotel where they were being held hostage by the Iraqi government in Baghdad. Their new location is an office building in the middle of an industrial section of Baghdad. The Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament made a public statement, defining why the hostages are being housed at certain locations around Iraq. Iraq is using them as human shields, and providing them accommodations at power plants, chemical factories, ports and government buildings to deter the US, Britain and their allies from bombing these locations if they decide to intervene militarily. And it’s not just in Iraq, the Chappell family from BA Flight 149 is being kept next to a chemical factory in newly acquired Kuwait, for the same purpose, but their conditions are much worse. In the third segment Sean and Jacquie are joined by Kevin Kamps, a Radioactive Waste watchdog at Beyond Nuclear, to talk about concerns that US nuclear facilities could soon run out of necessary supplies, whether nuclear power plants even need to stay online amid a glut of unused energy resources, and how keeping them running means drawing from the severely-depleted medical equipment supply.Later in the show, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Netfa Freeman, an analyst for the Institute for Policy Studies and member of the Black Alliance for Peace Coordinating Committee, to talk about a new piece in the Washington Post by a number of Tri-State police chiefs, pro-war think-tankers and a DHS adviser urging public leaders to prime the public for the National Guard to begin patrolling US streets, whether US naval maneuvers in the Caribbean are more about combating drug-trafficking or attempting to intimidate Venezuelans, and why the writings of Vladimir Lenin and Malcolm X are so relevant in this time of global upheaval.

In the third segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Brian Becker, host of Loud and Clear with Brian Becker on Radio Sputnik and National Director for the ANSWER Coalition, to talk about the US airstrike in Iraq which Iraqi sources are saying killed multiple Iraqi soldiers and police, why mainstream media's framing of the strikes as "retaliatory" misportrays the situation, what Iraq was like before multiple US wars turned it into a sectarian wasteland, why the recent US offer of "humanitarian aid" to Iran is so cynical and disingenuous, how the ongoing sanctions on Iran mirror the State Department's treatment of Venezuela, why the US government's insistence on maintaining a military occupation of Iraq (despite the Iraqi Parliament's demand that they leave) reflects a growing fear of Iraqi cooperation with Russia and China, how references to a "shock and awe" strategy can ultimately be traced back to how slavemasters in the US responded to uprisings of enslaved Africans. and why international solidarity is so crucial to the struggle for global liberation.Later in the show, Jacquie and Sean are joined by Natacia Knapper, an organizer with Stop Police Terror Project DC, to talk about Donald Trump's negligent response to the COVID-19 outbreak thus far, which local groups in DC are stepping in to fill in the glaring holes in the social welfare net exposed by the crisis, how school shutdowns are affecting the most impoverished, what steps she and other like-minded activists are taking to care for DC's most vulnerable populations as the government continues neglecting to do so, why it's so important to build highly-organized community networks to keep distributing supplies under increasingly stressful conditions, what to make of the huge contradiction between the popular American Exceptionalist imagining of the US and the harsh reality we now confront, whether this moment could ultimately represent a wake-up call for working people that we need a new socialist form of governance, what it means that dozens of Utah Jazz players were tested for Coronavirus while normal people struggle to get diagnosed, whether Trump's declaration that the Coronavirus Crisis is a national emergency signals that the federal government is finally taking the outbreak seriously, what to make of the new "Candyman" movie, and how a new generation of black directors and producers are upending pervasive racist tropes in cinema.

Darrell Castle talks about the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by a Hellfire missile fired from a U.S. drone. Transcription/Notes: TRUMP AND THE GENERAL Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. Today is Friday, January 10, 2020, and on this Report I will be talking about the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by a Hellfire missile fired from a U.S. drone. The attack, apparently personally ordered by President Trump, occurred at the Baghdad airport where the General had just arrived on a flight from Tehran, Iran. He was there to meet with an Iraqi named Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis who had personally planned and led the blockade attacks against the U.S. Embassy. Keep in mind that the situation is fluid and changing as I speak.  A brief background to this story tells us that first an American civilian contractor was killed and several U.S. soldiers wounded in a rocket attack on an Iraqi base near KirKuk in Iraqi Kurdistan. In response, President Trump authorized airstrikes on five camps of the attackers. The targeted organization was designated a terrorist organization by President Obama's State Department in 2009. The group has repeatedly attacked U.S. forces in Iraq. In retaliation for the U.S. bombing, protesters led by the Iraqi Muhandis, blockaded and attacked the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. Attacking embassies is a common tactic used by Middle East groups, who believe they are immune from retaliation. Remember the takeover of the U.S. embassy in Tehran in 1979, and the siege of the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya during President Obama's administration.   President Trump tweeted out a threat, as he termed it, and said that Iran would pay a very big price. The Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Khamenei taunted President Trump on New Year's Day by saying “there is not a damn thing you can do.” It turns out that the Ayatollah was wrong because when his top General got off his airplane and got in the car with Muhandis, they did not make it off the tarmac before a Hellfire missile fired from a U.S. drone obliterated them. I suppose the Ayatollah confused President Trump with Presidents of his past dealing, but apparently Trump wanted to send him a Hellfire message that could be read as, “I'm not Jimmy Carter and I'm not Barack Obama, and when you kill one of us I will kill you back”.  The Iranians had to retaliate, of course, so they sent some rockets into Iraqi bases where U.S. troops were stationed, apparently killing no one but appearing strong and unafraid. So, they killed some of ours and in retaliation, Trump killed some of theirs and they retaliated for that, although in a benign way designed to not require further retaliation. The President spoke to the nation and accepted their quid pro quo as the end of it as far as he is concerned. If the Iranian retaliation was planned and accepted in advance I would not be surprised. There are rumors floating around that a back channel note sent through the Swiss embassy to Tehran said that proportionate retaliation would be acceptable and I assume that means a military and not a civilian target. I'll be surprised if this tit for tat goes any further than that because I think Trump wants to use it as an opportunity to do what he promised in his campaign he would do, and that is get the U.S. out of the eternal war business. So, perhaps a quiet deal with Iran is in place, and everyone avoids embarrassment. That's just a guess on my part but it looks plausible. I admit thought that this idea of pre-planned withdrawal looks shaky now, considering the massive buildup of U.S. forces in the Gulf Region, so we will see. In response to all this fighting, the Iraqi Parliament met and voted to invite U.S. troops to leave Iraq immediately. Perhaps the President will accept their invitation and pull the U.S. out of Iraq as he promised to do in his 2016 campaign. Perhaps he will do that, but if so, it won't solve the problem unless they come home complet...

Now is the time to get the perspective of US Military Veterans who explain the process of military procedure, the geopolitical landscape of this corner of the Middle East and explain how troops maintain order through upholding their duty by not adhering to unlawful orders. This is a tense time but both John and Nate show listeners how to engage in disagreement and find common ground. In Iraq, masked gunmen shot dead 18 protesters overnight and injured more than 800 people in the Shiite holy city of Karbala on Monday. Nearly 225 Iraqis have been killed since a wave of anti-government protests swept the country last month. The protesters in Karbala were attacked while they camped out in the city's Education Square to protest corruption, lack of jobs and poor public services. Meanwhile, in Baghdad, hospital officials said four people died during protests on Monday, while another 109 were injured. On Monday, the Iraqi Parliament met for the first time since the protests began. Lawmakers voted to dissolve provincial councils and cut the salaries of some high-ranking officials. But the influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr dismissed the measures as a “sham” and called on the Iraqi government to announce early parliamentary elections. We speak with Yanar Mohammed, president of the Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq. Shownotes Jodie Evans is the co-founder and co-director of CODEPINK and the co-founder of the after-school writing program, 826LA. She has been a visionary advocate for peace for several decades. An inspired motivator, Jodie invigorates nascent activists and re-invigorates seasoned activists through her ever-evolving, always exciting methods to promote peace. Whether in board rooms or war zones, Jodie’s enthusiasm for a world at peace infuses conciliation, optimism and activism. As Director of Administration in California Governor Jerry Brown’s first administration, Jodie championed environmental causes, resulting in breakthroughs in wind and solar technology. She managed Governor Brown's 1991 Presidential campaign that instituted a cap on financial contributions which resulted in a stronger push for campaign finance standards. Jodie serves on the board of directors of numerous organizations that foster environmental, charitable, educational, socio-political and healthcare causes, including Drug Policy Alliance, Foundation for World Arts, Global Girl Media, Hereditary Disease Foundation, Institute for Policy Studies, Motion Institute and Rainforest Action Network. In 1999, she co-created the Peace Conference in Dubrovnik centered on "Imagining Peace in the 21st Century," and she continues to produce the multi-event World Festival of Sacred Music that takes place in Los Angeles every 3 years. Since the start of the 2003 Iraq War, Jodie has traveled to Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and Jordan. On her most recent visit to Jordan, Jodie traveled with a peace coalition to meet with delegates from the Iraqi Parliament to institute an action plan for peace and reconciliation. In Cuba, she protested the prison facility at Guantanamo, and, in 2015, she was one of 30 women activists from fifteen countries who crossed the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea calling for peace and reconciliation between the two countries. Jodie’s commitment to social change is evidenced in documentary films she has produced, starting with Stripped and Teased: Tales from Las Vegas Women, a very personal look at the real women who work and live in Jodie’s hometown. She has also produced The People Speak, based on Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States; the Oscar-nominated documentary, The Square, about the 2011-2012 democratic uprisings in Egypt; the climate change documentary, This Changes Everything; and, The Brainwashing of my Dad, about the rise of the right-wing media apparatus. In partnership with Andrew Beath at Ocean Song, a farm and wilderness center in Northern California, she has witnessed how a community gifted with land can thrive, turning the land into rich soil for the growth of human beings. Inspired by the success of Ocean Song, Jodie partnered with Paul Hawken and Lekha Singh to become a caretaker for Two Rivers and Mohawk Love Farms in Springfield, Oregon. She is on the board of directors of the Center for New Economics and she is a tireless advocate of the slow food and slow money movements, supporting local production and local consumption and encouraging economic development in the local regional economy. Jodie is the co-editor of two books, Twilight of Empire: Responses to Occupation, and, Stop the Next War Now: Effective Responses to Violence and Terrorism, and a contributor to Beautiful Trouble: A Toolbox for Revolution. She is currently writing a book about divesting from the unjust, extractive war economy and building a just, sustainable peace economy. Jodie Evans website Jodie’s mission: Jodie is primarily focused on sharing a global vision for peace and social justice. Avi Melamed - Inside The Middle East | Because Real Knowledge is A True Asset

On Monday, June 24th the Iraqi Parliament approved the nomination of the following Ministers: General (Res.) Najah Hassan Ali al-Shammari to be Iraq’s Minister of Defense; Yassin Taher Hassan al-Yasiri to be Iraq’s Minister of Interior Affairs; and Farouk al-Shwani to be Iraq’s Minister of Justice. The Iraqi elections were held in May 2018. Since then – until Monday, those three positions had not been filled. The reason for the delay was the power struggle within Iraq between Iranian proxies and pro-Iranian factors and those who reject Iranian intervention in Iraq and in Iraqi affairs. (On the Iranian-Iraqi struggle in Iraq, please see some articles I have published on that issue below). n Monday, June 24th the Iraqi Parliament approved the nomination of the following Ministers: General (Res.) Najah Hassan Ali al-Shammari to be Iraq’s Minister of Defense; Yassin Taher Hassan al-Yasiri to be Iraq’s Minister of Interior Affairs; and Farouk al-Shwani to be Iraq’s Minister of Justice. In my analysis, Al- Shammari’s nomination is a political achievement for the Iraqi camp that opposes Iranian intervention in Iraq. Click Here to Read Post on my Website

2 May 2016 - Even more than in the past there is this nexus between the progressive movement and the labor movement in the US. This week we were joined for the interview by the Chief Economist of the AFL-CIO, the deeply knowledgable Dr. William Spriggs. Dr. Spriggs kindly gave us an unusually long and detailed interview and we highly recommend visiting some of the pages, to which I refer during our talk. They are on the excellent website of the AFL-CIO here, here, here and here. At the top of the show Will fills us in on what is going on with the protestors who have just taken the Iraqi Parliament. Later in the show he gives us the promised update on the Scottish elections which will take place on 5 May. I start out on the newly released anti-austerity budget which has just been announced by the Trudeau government in Canada. I come back a bit later to give a lot of detail about the very aggressive Vision 2030 economic plan aimed at weaning Saudi Arabia off of its dependence on oil. Headed by favorite son Deputy Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman (MbS as he is called in Saudi), the plan is interesting and hopeful but will have to overcome significant resistance from Wahhabi fundamentalists in order to succeed. We'll see.... I also learned that Netroots Radio has moved all of the old shows to which we had links from this site. Of course, all those links are now dead. I'll have to figure out where they went and fix that. On a more cheerful note, the archive section for Hopping Mad has been updated and an index has been added making it easier to find specific subject - Carrots! Arliss
