What do grades tell students about their learning? Are they even helpful? Even though evidence suggests grades are a poor motivator for student learning, we still use them in our classrooms to evaluate learning. But there's a much better way to not only evaluate learning, but track learner GROWTH and PROGRESS. In this highly engaging episode recorded live at my Book Launch Party , Gary Heidt takes us through his journey of replacing grades in his classroom with portfolios and presentations of learning, and the impact it had on his learners. In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, host Stewart Alsop sits down with Jack, a tech enthusiast and founder of Vaporware, who also goes by Wereness on Twitter. The conversation spans topics such as Sweden's historical roots in Viking culture, entrepreneurial spirit, and technological innovation. They discuss Jack's insights into Swedish history, internet culture, and the origins of platforms like The Pirate Bay. The conversation eventually moves into Jack's focus on building the future of decentralized technology with projects like Vaporware and Plunder, alongside exploring concepts like solid-state interpreters. You can follow Jack on Twitter at @Wereness.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:00 Introduction to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast00:03 Guest Introduction: Jack of Vaporware00:17 Learning Journeys and Voice Forms01:07 Swedish History Overview05:24 Sweden's Modernization and World War II08:23 Entrepreneurial Spirit in Northern Europe09:02 Gorbachev and the Soviet Union's Collapse14:36 Sweden's Pandemic Response and Conformity18:33 Host's Language Skills and Travel Aspirations21:13 Argentina's Economic History and Welfare State25:26 The U.S. Welfare State During COVID26:21 Designing Effective Welfare Systems27:40 Skepticism Towards UBI and Automation28:22 Argentina's Political Landscape29:16 Rethinking Political and Social Institutions31:22 Empiricism vs. Rationalism33:08 Challenges of Modern Technology and Information36:19 Reputation Systems and Information Control46:02 Introduction to Vaporware and Plunder47:54 Understanding Solid State Interpreters52:21 Conclusion and Contact InformationKey InsightsSweden's Unique Entrepreneurial History: Jack provides insight into Sweden's historical journey, highlighting how the country, known for its Viking roots and iron industry, has maintained an entrepreneurial spirit. Despite being late to modernize compared to other European nations, Sweden developed a strong engineering and industrial focus, fostering a culture of innovation that paved the way for companies like Spotify.Pirate Bay and Sweden's Digital Pioneers: The discussion touches on how Sweden's advanced internet infrastructure and highly connected population led to projects like The Pirate Bay. Jack notes that Sweden's conformity to trends and its neophilic culture contributed to the rise of such platforms, where digital piracy was once a mainstream practice, reflecting a larger cultural shift in media consumption. The Conformity Paradox in Sweden: A key theme in the episode is Sweden's paradoxical approach to conformity, where at a national level, the country made nonconformist decisions, such as its unique COVID-19 strategy. Jack explains this as a deeper form of conformity to long-standing institutional trust, showing that Swedish society's adherence to institutional plans is rooted in a high level of trust in central authority.Decentralized Technology and Vaporware: Jack introduces the concept of Vaporware, a project aimed at building decentralized technologies to provide users with greater control over their data. He explains that Vaporware is a company built on Plunder, an alternative to Urbit, and emphasizes how these technologies aim to solve current issues related to internet privacy, data ownership, and freedom.Solid-State Interpreter for Future-Proof Computing: One of the most technical insights revolves around the solid-state interpreter, which Jack describes as a combination of a virtual machine and a database. It allows for the creation of a computing environment where code and data can be stored and updated indefinitely, ensuring that the programs and data remain functional and accessible long into the future, unlike current software systems.Reputation Systems and Social Trust: Jack challenges traditional reputation systems, advocating for a more nuanced, context-specific method of evaluating trust in online interactions. He suggests that symbols or markers should be used to indicate trustworthiness based on context, rather than relying on simple upvotes or scores, which can be gamed and lead to dystopian outcomes.Global Institutional Collapse and the Need for New Systems: Both Stewart and Jack reflect on the global decline of traditional institutions, with welfare states and centralized governance models failing to meet modern needs. They emphasize the importance of rethinking political and economic systems to adapt to the changing technological landscape, drawing parallels between Sweden's past successes and the broader need for innovative, decentralized solutions globally.

All of the guests have been students in Dr. Michael Lujan Bevacqua's free zoom Chamoru classes offered each Saturday. Fanachu has hosted multiple episodes with Chamorus seeking to learn their native language, who share their language learning journeys. As more than 80% of Chamorus in the world today cannot speak their native language, it is important to normalize and nurture the learning of Chamoru, not mock those who weren't taught the language growing up.This episode featured as guests Patricia Pocaigue Beuke, David Taitingfong, Natalie "Pachang" Velasco and Charlie and Avery Selk. Sheridan chats with Jackie Clifford from Clarity in the episode on Learning Journeys Jackie has been in and out of organisations, all my all her career. She has had a variety of roles, working in the public, private and not for profit sectors One of her focuses is with new managers. And helping managers who have suddenly been told that they have to manage a team - and that can range from an accountancy practice to a group of scientists. And another part is on coaching and mentoring. Having co-authored three books, the second was written on the topic of mentoring. The programmes that Jackie designed, where she has been able to include one to one coaching, group coaching have more significant real world results than those that don't. These are the results that show that life long learning is long term and not just something that is done for 6 weeks and then forgotten. Jackie believes in the idea that a learning journey is something that is continuous and the journey should not stop until everything has been finished - that there is no where to go and that person has left the organisation. This chat between JAckie and Sheridan is one that throws up more questions that answers during the chat but ultimately creates a great conversation between two people who embrace the idea of lifelong learning and have applied it to many situations throughout their career. This is a great episode and I am sure that you are going to really enjoy it. Have a listen and we'd love to hear your thoughts on this subject. But if at the end of the day, these are just people. How can we help and support them?” “What I realized more so for myself was that doubling down on my strengths gave me more fuel, more energy. The more I did it, the more confident I became. And then the more people wanted to hire me.” “We were able to pivot and get our stuff together essentially so quickly because we had to. Because we, our customers, all those little companies were now looking to us to help them keep the lights on.”

Simply Worth It: Physician Negotiations with Dr. Linda Street
It may not seem like it at first glance, but intimacy and salary negotiations actually have a lot in common for women. The struggle to advocate for yourself doesn't just show up at work, it also shows up in the bedroom. Finding our voices is important in every area of our lives, and when it comes to sex and intimacy, it feels even harder than asking to get paid what we're worth. Classroom training is still the most common method of delivering courses. Even after 2 decades of internet disruption and new technologies. It's not only time to change but we're way past it being the right time to change. It's important to remember that training is an event while learning is a long-term process. Simple enough, right? Once you understand this simple truth you begin to realize how traditional classroom events are inadequate in supporting the entire learning process. We need to design more, or something totally different. In this episode we're talking with Ann Rollins about her experiences moving event-based training to learning journeys. We'll talk about active learning experiences that inspire learners, creating high-level learner personas and learning journeys that are integrated into other corporate initiatives. Ann will also share with us how existing tech infrastructure can be used to create a better learner experience. In a post-pandemic world there are many new corporate initiatives that have a training component. Jennie Antolak, president and co-founder of Learning Journeys, and Tirzah Marie Lewis, Director of Creative Development, lead a motley crew of engaging, intelligent, and fun coaches and coaching trainers representing all areas of business, non-profit, entrepreneurial, and educational arenas. They collectively provide a place where people learn and apply the true essence of coaching. There are no lessons on skillfully advising, artfully connecting dots, or keenly identifying blind spots for clients. Instead, they teach students how to trust the process of coaching and experience the true strength of the human spirit. In each class, Jennie and Tirzah demonstrate how coaching is the one modality which, if fully embraced, can magnify one's sense of agency and conviction. In addition, they faithfully teach the coaching competencies that help others reconnect to their inner resources by tuning into intuition instead of listening to experts outside of themselves. Jennie and Tirzah have a combined 38+ years in the world of learning and development. Jennie possesses a degree in Communications, a Master's Degree in Organizational Development, a Coach Practitioner and Mastery Level Certification, a Narrative Certification, and is an MCC level certified coach. Tirzah obtained her degree in Organizational Communications and holds both a Coach Practitioner and Narrative Certification. In addition, she is ACC credentialed. While both Jennie and Tirzah value experience and education, many of their less recognized successes are some of their proudest moments. Antolak relishes and shares with anyone who will listen about being crowned champion of the Layfette Square Noodle Races. And then there is Tirzah's recent accomplishment-being awarded the Master of Pivoting; with the caveat of; most likely to lose her “Zoom Face” when disagreeing with the seemingly “simple answer”. (Not everyone is as appreciates Tirzah's latest success, but it doesn't stop her from sharing either.) Both Jennie and Tirzah are committed to upping their game by always learning, constantly pushing the boundaries, and continuously striving for more. Self Publishing School : Learn How To Write A Book And Grow Your Business
Today, I'm joined by Dr. Sonia Wright - a board-certified radiologist, a sexual counselor, and a certified life coach. She received her education from Stanford University, the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, the Mayo Clinic, and the University of Michigan. Dr. Wright completed her life coach training from Brooke Castillo's The Life Coach School and Learning Journeys. Sonia is on a mission to help women embrace their sexuality and end the emotional pain and isolation associated with sexual difficulties. Dr. Wright believes wholeheartedly that all women deserve to experience pleasurable sexual intimacy. When she first started her author journey, "My original plan was to write my book, and I had this plan that I would go away for the weekend to Las Vegas." January came along, and her plans didn't work out. Sonia didn't get to write her book. To build her public speaking platform during COVID, Dr. Wright reached out to her network to be a guest on LIVE events and then started reaching out to podcasters to spread the word about her coaching and speaking availability. "I learned about my niche that really helped me hone in on the types of people that would listen to my message and make sure I directed my message in that direction." At first, Facebook LIVE speaking worked out the best to bring in clients to interact with people. After her website was built, she had more people contacting her through her website after listening to her interview as a guest on another podcast. Find out how her speaker kit made a big difference for her business, how Dr. Wright "normalizes" her topic, and how she grew her business while doing her regular day job. Listen in to find out how Dr. Wright chose her niche and avatar, how to get clear on your solution, and how to feel confident talking about an “outside of the box” topic. Amanda Gaube is the Manager of Sales Strategy and Enablement at Zscaler. In this session with The Collaborator, Amanda discussed Learning Journeys, reinforcement and empathy for the reps in the field and about 1000 other things as well.1️⃣To fully understand what you trying to impact with anything you build.2️⃣Related t the point above, work collaboratively with leaders and individuals to understand their needs, don't try to go it alone.3️⃣To use design thinking principles to peel back beyond the surface need stated, or unstated. For example, your new product may not be selling well... Why? Lack of product training? Lack of pricing clarity? Dig in until you get to the root issue and then try to fix the root cause, not the symptom.
Learning a new language takes a lot of commitment and hard work. We all have such high hopes for a speedy road to fluency, but some of us unfortunately fall short. In earlier episodes, we’ve given advice on learning German and what steps we would suggest someone takes when they first arrive in the country. However, we didn’t dive deep into our personal experiences learning German and what we did wrong. This week, we’re going to give a very honest picture of our language learning journeys, in the hopes that all of you learn from our mistakes and improve your German skills faster than we did. We get to hear their perspectives on the challenges the pandemic has presented in their own academic lives - as well their students; pain-points in digital access on educational systems; and the opportunities in future-casting post-COVID educational journeys that highlight solutions among likely allies. With cross-collaborative programs with universities on the African continent and Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United States of America as a primary example. This week we talk about our own language learning journeys and how that has influenced our own teaching. Being two bookish English teachers, our first recommendation is get students reading, reading and a bit more reading - but alas, they might not be too into that, so it's important to get them using the language in ways that interests them. The website Alan mentioned was 1001 Reasons To Learn Spanish, where you can find all of Juan Fernandez's work, for free, to get people learning Spanish. ----more---- We're two teachers who have worked across the UK, Ireland, Spain and Italy. We worked together for two years in Cáceres, Spain. We've plenty to say on the ELT world, so thought we'd make a podcast on it. Today's episode is about sexual health and may contain subject material and language that is not suitable for all audiences. Hello everyone. Today, I am joined by Dr. Sonia Wright to discuss sexual health in the times of COVID-19. During this crazy time, you may be thinking that sex is the last thing you want to think about, but Dr. Sonia is here to tell us why it should be prioritized. She also offers many suggestions on communication, and working though emotions and anxiety during difficult times. If you'd like to support the podcast, I'd so appreciate it if you head over to HippocraticHustle.com/Patreon. You can find information there about how you can support the show. My guest today, Dr. Sonia Wright, is a board-certified radiologist, trained sexual counselor, and a Certified Life Coach extraordinaire. She has also completed a training program in sexual counseling at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. Dr. Sonia has completed life coach training programs from Brooke Castillo's The Life Coach School and Learning Journeys and is a Certified Life Coach. In this episode you will learn: How Dr. Sonia got into the world of sexual counseling and coaching. What her training entailed to become certified as a sexual counselor. Why sex should not be something on your “To-Do List.” How she counsels people in the comfort of their home on their schedule. Why Dr. Sonia feels that self-care is the start of positive change. Why it's so important to communicate your needs to others. How she is helping her clients work though their emotions during COVID-19. What types of sexual intimacy you can share that are not just typical sex. What you need to be aware of regarding sexual activity during COVID-19.
