South Africa dare not fail in securing future demand for its 'incredible' platinum group metals (PGM) endowment, the Hydrogen Economy Discussion heard on Wednesday. Anglo American Platinum projects and environment executive head Prakashim Moodliar outlined the widespread marketing effort under way to boost PGM demand as well as the hugely positive benefit of adoption of the hydrogen economy. Moodliar, a keynote presenter along with German Embassy deputy head of mission Enrico Brandt, revealed the considerable work under way to map South Africa's Hydrogen Valley further, while Brandt provided insight into the momentous acceptance of hydrogen in Germany. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) Moreover, Moodliar outlined how the building of the hydrogen economy in South Africa would enable significant job creation, reduce carbon emissions, support social change and drive economic development. Currently, the bulk of platinum group metals are used in catalytic converters to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines and the shift to battery electric vehicles therefore poses a risk to South Africa's PGMs industry, which employs 172 000 people, making it one of this country's largest private sector employers. "Considering that every employed person supports an average of ten other people, we dare not fail in securing future demand for this incredible natural endowment. "The significant growth forecasts for the hydrogen economy will offer significant demand opportunities for metals, including aluminium, copper, iridium, nickel, platinum, palladium, and zinc to support these hydrogen technologies. "This would include metal for renewable electrical technologies, and the electrolysis for renewable hydrogen, carbon storage for low carbon, nitrogen, or fuel cells using hydrogen for power transport. "We know that reaching the goals of the Paris agreement to keep the global temperature rise to well below two degrees would mean a quadrupling of mineral requirements for clean energy technologies by 2040," said Moodliar. A typical battery electrical car for example requires six times more mineral inputs than a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle, with metal supply and investment falling far short of what is needed to reach the Paris Agreement. A business plan has been submitted to South Africa's State-owned Industrial Development Corporation to secure funding from Germany's KfW development bank for Project Rainbow, which focuses on building a hydrogen freight corridor for trucks and buses. "Rainbow is also looking at localised manufacture and assembly of vehicles to support building a local supply chain," said Moodliar, who added during the discussion covered by Mining Weekly that Rainbow has been afforded strategic infrastructure project status. Brandt outlined Germany's commitment to hydrogen as part of its commitment to the Paris Agreement that calls for a fundamental shift away from fossil fuels and towards sustainable alternatives. "The transition will affect everyone and everything, our way of life, politics and business," Brandt said. "We're facing the most fundamental transformation of the global economy in our lifetime, comparable to the Industrial Revolution in the past," he added during the event chaired by mining luminary Bernard Swanepoel.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Reyaz Arian was the top commander in charge of security at the Hamid Karzai International Airport — one of the most important locations in the country — before the Afghan capital fell to the Taliban, a position he held for six months. Before that, 45-year-old Arian served in the presidential protection service for Afghan presidents Hamid Karzai and Ashraf Ghani.Related: This Afghan interpreter helped the US Army Special Forces. He's desperate to get out of Afghanistan.Arian, wearing his military uniform and sitting in front of a portrait of Ghani and a flag of Afghanistan projected confidence during an interview with The World at the airport in late July.“You know, the security situation in our country, when you work in security, many things keep you awake at night. We are working to have tight security inside the airport.”Maj. Gen. Mohammad Reyaz Arian, previously the top commander in charge of security at Hamid Karzai International Airport When asked if he was worried about airport security after US troops are fully withdrawn by the Aug. 31 deadline, he responded calmly, “You know the security situation in our country when you work in security, many things keep you awake at night. We are working to have tight security inside the airport.”He added, “I don't have any big concerns. Everything is under control.” Maj. Gen. Since then, the US and other countries have been working to evacuate people. Those who've been able to land elsewhere say they are among the lucky ones — but they are concerned for those still in Afghanistan. The US military reported its biggest day of evacuation flights out of Afghanistan by far on Monday, but deadly, persistent violence has blocked many desperate evacuees from entering Kabul's airport, and the Taliban signaled they might soon seek to shut down the evacuation. Credit: Senior Airman Taylor Crul/US Air Force via AP Twenty-eight US military flights ferried about 10,400 people to safety out of Taliban-held Afghanistan over the 24 hours that ended early Monday morning, a White House official said. The chief Pentagon spokesman, John Kirby, said the faster pace of evacuation was due, in part, to coordination with Taliban commanders on getting evacuees into the airport.“Thus far, and going forward, it does require constant coordination and deconfliction with the Taliban,” Kirby said. “What we've seen is, this deconfliction has worked well in terms of allowing access and flow as well as reducing the overall size of the crowds just outside the airport.”Since Aug. 14, the US has evacuated and facilitated the evacuation of about 37,000 people. The US military says it has the capacity to fly between 5,000 and 9,000 people out per day. Kabul airport: A scene of chaos and tragedyThe US left all of its military bases in Afghanistan, including Bagram Airfield, its biggest in the country by early July.As the Taliban swept through the country at lightning speed, other airports became difficult to access. Taliban fighters took major land border crossings and roads and highways between major cities became too dangerous to navigate.Related: 'If journalists leave a scene, it becomes a black hole,' VOA journalist in Kabul saysArian later told The World in a phone call that he and his staff stayed at the airport until 11 p.m. that night of Aug. 15. One of them was a young soccer player. In another video, posted online Wednesday, a group of girls sang a beloved Afghan song about their homeland.Related: An Afghan American scholar describes his fear-filled journey from the chaos at Kabul airport to a plane bound for home in the US“Now, that I've lost you, my dear country,” they sang, “I'm forever burdened with sadness.”The girls can't be seen in the footage — only their long shadows, cast on the runway at Kabul's only international airport.‘I felt like I was going to die here'Ramin Rahman, a 27-year-old photographer, made it out of the country last week. Rahman has worked for German news organizations for the past three years and said he has no doubt that he would have been a Taliban target had he stayed.“I [have been] working with a lot of media, my face is there, I've written a lot of articles about a lot of things which made me feel that my life is in danger.”Ramin Rahman, a 27-year-old photographer who fled Afghanistan last week“I [have been] working with a lot of media, my face is there, I've written a lot of articles about a lot of things which made me feel that my life is in danger,” he said.On Monday morning, he got a call from one of his friends in Germany who told him to get to the airport immediately. His friend had put Rahman's name on the list for an evacuation flight for German Embassy staff in Kabul. Rahman said he could only grab two things, his cellphone and laptop, before rushing to the airport. There, he saw utter chaos.“A lot of people were panicking, they were running here and there, no police was there, no military, nothing,” he said. Credit: Rahmat Gul/AP Even worse, once he finally made it inside, there was no German flight.Hours later, he got a call saying that the Germans would not start their evacuation until the next day. Rahman decided to sit tight at the airport. It was too risky to leave. The Taliban were on the streets outside and there were clashes at the entrance to the airport. Besides, he wasn't sure if he'd be able to get back in if he left.Hours passed. At around 11 p.m., he said, a US military plane landed. People rushed to get on board.“It was such a difficult time for anyone. So many people were on the plane and so many people got wounded, got injured, people stepped on each other, a lot of women were crying, kids were crying, it was a horrible moment, I don't want to remember it. Never,” he said.At first, the Americans said the plane couldn't take off. There were too many people on board. Some had to get off. Rahman started to make his way out but suddenly, the sound of gunfire came closer. The Americans told him to stay inside the plane. Rahman couldn't see outside of the plane because the passenger side of the plane didn't have any windows — but he could hear the gunfire.“Then I feel hopeless. [I thought] OK, I'm going to die here now,” he said.An hour and 20 minutes later, the plane started moving. He finally felt a sense of relief. His fellow passengers were ecstatic.“They were cheering, they were clapping, they were happy that the plane just took off,” he recalled.Rahman is now staying at a military base in the Gulf country of Qatar where thousands have been evacuated from Afghanistan. He said he is glad he made it out alive, but his parents and five siblings are still in Afghanistan — and he hopes to get them out soon. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Terrorist financing is an old phenomenon that keeps evolving and remains at the heart of global counter-terrorism efforts. It is the lifeblood for terrorist groups that need funding to sustain themselves and carry out attacks. In this 7th episode of our podcast series, Lucinda Creighton discussed this topic with Hans-Jakob Schindler, a Senior Director at CEP and the head of the CEP Berlin office. After taking us through his rich career that led him to the German government's team investigating al-Qaida, the German Embassy in Iran and the ISIL, al-Qaida, and Taliban Sanction Monitoring Team at the UN Security Council, Hans provided us with some insights on the terrorist financing landscape. He examined various trends and new phenomena, ranging from the use of cryptocurrencies, the role of social media to the financing methods used by right-wing organisations.

The French artillery officer Captain Alfred Dreyfus is wrongfully convicted of communicating French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris, initiating a political scandal that rocks the Third Republic. ---- Important Information ---- The Dreyfus Affair was a political scandal that divided the Third French Republic from 1894 until its resolution in 1906. "L'Affaire", as it is known in French, has come to symbolise modern injustice in the Francophone world, and it remains one of the most notable examples of a complex miscarriage of justice and antisemitism. The role played by the press and public opinion proved influential in the conflict. A scandal that rocked France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Dreyfus affair involved a Jewish artillery captain in the French army, Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), who was falsely convicted of passing military secrets to the Germans. In 1894, after a French spy at the German Embassy in Paris discovered a ripped-up letter in a waste basket with handwriting said to resemble that of Dreyfus, he was court-martialed, found guilty of treason and sentenced to life behind bars on Devil’s Island off of French Guiana. In a public ceremony in Paris following his conviction, Dreyfus had the insignia torn from his uniform and his sword broken and was paraded before a crowd that shouted, “Death to Judas, death to the Jew.” In 1896, the new head of the army’s intelligence unit, Georges Picquart, uncovered evidence pointing to another French military officer, Major Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy, as the real traitor. However, when Picquart told his bosses what he’d discovered he was discouraged from continuing his investigation, transferred to North Africa and later imprisoned. Nevertheless, word about Esterhazy’s possible guilt began to circulate. In 1898, he was court-martialed but quickly found not guilty; he later fled the country. After Esterhazy’s acquittal, a French newspaper published an open letter titled “J’Accuse…!” by well-known author Emile Zola in which he defended Dreyfus and accused the military of a major cover-up in the case. As a result, Zola was convicted of libel, although he escaped to England and later managed to return to France. The Dreyfus affair deeply divided France, not just over the fate of the man at its center but also over a range of issues, including politics, religion and national identity. In 1899, Dreyfus was court-martialed for a second time and found guilty. Although he was pardoned days later by the French president, it wasn’t until 1906 that Dreyfus officially was exonerated and reinstated in the army. -------------- Starring: Winston Burdett, Walter Cronkite, Don Hollenbeck, Edward P. The Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Vietnam (AHK Vietnam), in collaboration with the German Business Association in Vietnam (GBA) and the German Embassy in Hanoi, have successfully organized a charter flight to bring totally 220 diplomats, investors, entrepreneurs, experts and relatives from 15 countries in the European Union to return to Vietnam on 30th of July. In the group of people on that special flight, some were families waiting to be re-united, others were professionals about to visit Vietnam for the first time and there were also some who had already been in Vietnam professionally for some years. I could imagine how complicated it is to be stuck in Europe for months because our work suffered from their physical day-to-day absence. In this episode, we have Marko Walde, Chief Representative of AHK Vietnam with us, he led the AHK/GBA relocation task-force to manage all the challenges and difficulties to make this impossible missing to possible. Let's hear his own story of organizing the first special flight in our podcast this week!
The origin for the scandal lay in the discovery of a ripped-up letter in a waste basket at the German Embassy in ...

"Kristallnacht" is German for "Crystal night" and it would also become known as the "Night of Broken Glass," all of which referred to the shards of broken glass from shop windows that lay throughout German cities. Kristallacht specifically targeted the Jewish population in Germany. The trigger for the actions of Kristallnacht was the assassination of German Embassy official Ernst vom Rath in Paris by Herschel Grynzspan, who wanted to shoot a Nazi for the mass deportation of Polish Jews, including Grynzspan's parents, less than two weeks earlier. When Adolf Hitler found out about vom Rath's death, Hitler left the dinner party he was throwing. Then Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels said the riots that would take place should not be stopped. More specifically, the head of the secret police, Reinhard Heydrich, sent a telegram throughout Germany spelling out the exact orders for all German policemen. The result was that the state allowed the destruction of 7,000 Jewish-owned businesses, hundreds of synagogues, and untold Jewish homes. Some 30,000 young Jewish men were arrested and sent to labor camps. Most importantly, Kristallnacht signaled that the Nazi regime was entirely capable of genocide.
