When I first read The Tragedy of Heterosexuality by Jane Ward, my life was ruined. In it she writes, “...people cannot be rescued from forms of suffering that they themselves relate to as badges of honor.”And, “In no way do I intend to imply that couples should spend every minute together, but if we held straight couples to basic standards of good friendship—mutual respect and affection and a sense of comfort and bondedness based on shared experience—many straight relationships would fail the test.”These are insights that will destroy you.  And as if I weren't wrecked enough, Jane Ward, herself came on the podcast to talk about Chappell Roan, raising good kids, heteropessimism and so much more.Jane Ward is professor and chair of Feminist Studies at University of California Santa Barbara, where she teaches and writes about gender and sexual cultures. She is the author of multiple books, including The Tragedy of Heterosexuality, described by The New York Times Book Review as "a somber, urgent academic examination of the many ways in which opposite-sex coupling can hurt the very individuals who cling to it most. "This season was generously sponsored by Funny Girls, which is a program run by the Harnisch Foundation that uses improv to teach leadership skills to girls and nonbinary kids in grades 3 to 8. I had been neglecting my health and wellness as a CEO and mom, but their guidance changed everything.   They focus on helping busy parents prioritize "me time" and taking care of themselves. The key lies in understanding the power of self-care and how it impacts all aspects of life.   They offer a FREE 14-day program that simplifies health and fitness. It uses a traffic light system to create awareness about food choices and helps you focus on self-care.   The program aims to make health achievable and effective long-term. It emphasizes implementing changes over complicated information.   Colm & Jane stress that removing the labels we attach to ourselves, such as "CEO" or "mom," and understanding the importance of "me time" can lead to transformative results.   Enjoy the episode!   You can follow Jane and Colm on Instagram here Join Lose It for free here

Today I am joined again by my very fabulous friend and colleague Sasha Ostara. Sasha is a Somatic Intimacy Coach. Sasha and I both have a really strong aversion to the labelling of behavioural traits as masculine or feminine and instead prefer to categorise them as human qualities.in this podcast we talk about why we believe this and how our somatic training around the nervous system has helped inform this view. We also discussed:How labelling a behaviour masculine or feminine just weaponises the division that already exists between genders. That they are often confused with gender and somewhere along the way historically, someone decided to assign males to masculine and females to feminine, it could have been the other way,How our autonomic nervous system drives our behaviour and actually it is more helpful to look at the nervous system state in any given moment,How women have been conditioned to be in fawn and freeze response and that behaviour is deemed acceptable, The wave of gender self help books that came out in the 1970s and 1980s whilst helpful for some people in understanding others just further replicated earlier ideas of division and reinforced this point of view,How hormones impact on our nervous system response,The different polarities that exist in a social system and that it is the polarity and the patterns to look for not a masculine of feminine quality,How our relationships can be a replica of broader patterns that exist within social systems and cultural contexts that we are a part of, That we've noticed with female clients who want their partners to be more masculine, when asked to describe what that is what they are actually looking for is adult behaviour, not child like behaviour,How gendered terms carry a confirmation bias and it is important to actually look at these terms and whether you are doing this when you label a behaviour masculine or feminine and how that narrows people's perceptions of how they can show up in the world. We talked about three different books in the podcast, they were ‘The Tragedy of Heterosexuality' by Jane Ward, ‘Delusions of Gender' by Cordelia Fine, ‘The Flowering Wand: rewilding the sacred masculine' by Sophie Strand. En waarom horen we mannen zo vaak "no homo!" zeggen? Een confronterend gesprek, waarin we niet bang zijn om ook met onszelf te lachen. Heterosexuality is in crisis. Reports of sexual harassment, misconduct, and rape saturate the news in the era of #MeToo. Straight men and women spend thousands of dollars every day on relationship coaches, seduction boot camps, and couple's therapy in a search for happiness. In The Tragedy of Heterosexuality (NYU Press, 2020), Jane Ward smartly explores what, exactly, is wrong with heterosexuality in the twenty-first century, and what straight people can do to fix it for good. She shows how straight women, and to a lesser extent straight men, have tried to mend a fraught patriarchal system in which intimacy, sexual fulfillment, and mutual respect are expected to coexist alongside enduring forms of inequality, alienation, and violence in straight relationships. Ward also takes an intriguing look at the multi-billion-dollar self-help industry, which markets goods and services to help heterosexual couples without addressing the root of their problems. Ultimately, she encourages straight men and women to take a page out of queer culture, reminding them “about the human capacity to desire, fuck, and show respect at the same time.” Jana Byars is the Academic Director of Netherlands: International Perspectives on Sexuality and Gender. If opposite-gender partnerships remain the societal ideal, then why are so many straight couples miserable? Author Jane Ward has been studying this question for some time and outlines her ideas about the tragic effects of heteronormativity in her new book, The Tragedy of Heterosexuality (New York University Press, 2020). In our interview, we discuss her compelling case for why queer people, and lesbian feminism in particular, have much relational wisdom to offer their heterosexual counterparts, and why only a deepening—rather than queering—of their sexuality can save them. Sociologists Talking Real Sh*t

Dr. Jane Ward and I talk about her interesting and provocative book The Tragedy of Heterosexuality. Dr. Ward discusses heterosexuality's central role in misogyny, patriarchy, and and why heterosexuals are the ones you should feel sorry for. In the end Dr. Ward does not want to end the practice of heterosexuality but rather suggests what she refers to as "deep heterosexuality" in its place. Her book is a letter of love to her heterosexual sisters and plea for heterosexual men to "be better" and love women truly and deeply.

In this episode of Wine, Women, and Revolution, Heather interviews Jane Ward about her book The Tragedy of Heterosexuality. Jane describes herself as an ally of heterosexual women. You could call her book a self help book that hates self help books. In her book, Ms Ward attempts to tackle the underlying causes of pain in heterosexual relationships which she refers to as the heterosexuality paradox. If straight men claim to love women so much, then why do so many of their actions seem to center hating women instead of loving them? She draws inspiration from the lesbian feminist writings of the 70s and 80s and offers a brand new prescription for straightness. In short, the answer is to take a page from lesbians and to honor "the human capacity to desire, fuck, and show respect at the same time.” Transcript Auto Generated Jane Ward 0:00One of the things that became really clear, especially as I was, you know, getting older moving into my 40s was that straight women seemed really miserable in their marriages. They spent a lot of their time complaining about their husbands, there was a lot of divorce happening that was initiated by women. And so I guess I want to reconcile this long standing narrative about how being queer makes for such a difficult life with what seemed to be the reality which is that most queer people I know really love the queer parts of our lives. Heather Warburton 0:46This is Wine, Women and Revolution, with your host, Heather Warburton. Hi, and welcome to Wine, Women and Revolution. I'm your host Heather Warburton coming at you here on Create Your Future Productions. You can find us online at www.yourfuturecreator.com Follow us on all the social medias and get us wherever you get your podcasts from. I've been really excited about this interview ever since I booked it. And I booked it kind of a while ago. This is another author that I'm bringing to you guys today. And she had a really interesting concept for a book and I was so excited to talk to her. The book is called The Tragedy of Heterosexuality. And the author is Jane Ward. Welcome to the show, Jane. Jane Ward 1:28Thank you so much for having me. Heather Warburton 1:31So I guess my first question, as I was reading the book, I wanted to ask Who were you writing this book for? Who is your audience you had in mind? Jane Ward 1:41Oh, gosh, that's such a good question. I mean, I, this is my third book. And I am a professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies. And so you know, when you have an academic job, you who you're supposed to be writing for is other scholars. However, one of the beautiful things about being at the later stage of your career having tenure, and all of that is that you can decide, you know, I don't just want to write for other scholars, I want to write for a popular audience, I want more people to have access to my ideas. So this book is published with NYU press. And I have a great editor who was very happy for me to try to write in an accessible way that everyone would be able to understand. And so my hope is that this is a book for people. Anybody who's ever been in a heterosexual relationship, any queer person who wants some affirmation about the beauty of queerness, so pretty much everybody. Heather Warburton 2:44Again, I thought you I thought it was interesting that you actually call yourself an ally, to heterosexual people, like you're kind of flipping that script of Usually, people say they're an ally to the LGBTQIA. community. So you're kind of flipping that around in this book. Jane Ward 3:00Yes. So that was that was one of the original ideas or like an epiphany that I had. And when I say epiphany, I mean, really just kind of about my own life experience that motivated me to write this book. So you know, on the one hand, we have this story about how it's really difficult to be a member of the LGBT communi

Jane Ward is a feminist scholar and author of the books “Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men” and “Respectably Queer.” She teaches gender and sexuality studies at UC Riverside, specializing in feminist, queer and heterosexuality studies and creating “scholarship for the feminist revolution.” Jane joins Tierney to discuss her new book “The Tragedy of Heterosexuality,” a “lesbian feminist diagnosis” of heterosexuality that exposes the realities of heterosexual culture while encouraging its development into something deeper, more loving and less violent. Jane declares herself an ally to straight people as “they work to liberate heterosexuality from misogyny.” She’s an expert at revealing how weird most “normative” cultures and social identities tend to be. In this book, Jane contextualizes heterosexuality as the romantic arm of patriarchy and details how the heterosexual advice industry has been trying to help men and women in this country survive their marriages for the last 100+ years (not all that successfully, either). Do you want a chance to acknowledge queer people as allies to straight people, especially straight women experiencing romantic discontent, instead of vice versa? How about a celebration of the immeasurable contributions lesbians have made to the mainstream feminist movement? Listen to this and more importantly, read the book! Ward quotes Edit Massey as Aunt Ida in John Waters’ “Female Trouble” several times: “The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life.” No matter who you are or who you’re attracted to, Ward’s work has tons to offer you! “As with the often nebulous racial category of whiteness, one of the ways that we avoid looking critically at straightness is to keep it indefinable, to imagine that it is so vast and irreducible to any one way of being,” Ward writes in the book. So much has been written and broadcast about the hardships endured by gay, lesbian, and trans people—we’re all familiar with queer suffering. Yet, as a society and nation, we tend to overlook or gloss over the constraints and miseries of straight culture. In THE TRAGEDY OF HETEROSEXUALITY (NYU Press, September 2020), Jane Ward calls attention to the entrapment, disappointment, unwanted sex, and countless daily injustices endured by straight women. While conservatives have long promoted the belief that homosexual relationships are unnatural, damaged, and fraught with dysfunction, Ward examines what might be gained from raising similar questions about the health and sustainability of the heterosexual status quo.

In this latest podcast we hear from a volunteer, researcher and charity working closely together to ensure that people affected by dementia are involved in every stage of research to maximise impact. We discuss the challenges of PPI and provide some practical advice to support you to work with volunteers in a mutually beneficial way. Patient and public involvement (PPI) in research is a philosophy whereby research is carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ people affected by the condition rather than ‘about’, ‘for’ or ‘to’ people. Over the past twenty years an increasing value has been placed on including the lived experience of patients and the public in research covering the full spectrum of basic science through to health services. Our panellists today all work for or are funded by Alzheimer’s Society - Anna-Louise Smith, Research Engagement Manager, Dr Kirsten Moore, UCL Senior Research Fellow and Jane Ward, Research Network Local Area Coordinator. Alzheimer’s Society has pioneered the active involvement of people affected by dementia through their award winning Research Network, since 1999. More recently, over the last year Alzheimer’s Society has been considering the evidence surrounding how it involves people affected by dementia in research and moving the conversation about PPI forward from ‘proving’ why it should be done to ‘improving’ how it can do it in partnership with researchers. Jane Ward just legitimized "No homo," the excuse for any masculine straight dude who wishes to cup his buddy's balls. Her new book Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men is a fascinating study of why heterosexual (white) men who have homosexual encounters don't identify as gay. Lost? Then let her explain it on a very homoerotic Manwhore Podcast! Whether it's in a frat house, a military barracks or a Hell's Angel club house, straight-identified white men are having homosexual experiences with other straight-identified men. Jane Ward discusses how their masculinity and whiteness allows opportunities to explore each other's bodies without endangering their heterosexual identity. Not Gay makes sense of those Craigslist m4m ads of "Straight seeking Straight Jack Off Buddy." "Look bro, if you can't help a friend out by giving him a handjob then you're kind of a fag!" - says he-man former frat boy. #NotAllMen was a Twitter movement that angered many a feminist. I admit that I would prefer someone talking about "men," "white people," "straight people," "comedians" to qualify their complaint with "assh*les," "misogynists," "homophobes," and "Republicans." Ward helps me understand how to be a better ally while not letting myself be someone else's privilege punching bag. Ward gives an Intro to Intro to Feminism 101 by explaining intersectional feminism. Hopefully, we get to a point where we don't need the separate term and all feminism is intersectional, according to my guest. The UC-Riverside associate professor reminds us that one woman's experience is informed by not just her gender but her race, socioeconomic status and sexual orientation. Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men (New York University Press) A straight white girl can kiss a girl, like it, and still call herself straight—her boyfriend may even encourage her. But can straight white guys experience the same easy sexual fluidity, or would kissing a guy just mean that they are really gay? Not Gay thrusts deep into a world where straight guy-on-guy action is not a myth but a reality: there’s fraternity and military hazing rituals, where new recruits are made to grab each other’s penises and stick fingers up their fellow members’ anuses; online personal ads, where straight men seek other straight men to masturbate with; and, last but not least, the long and clandestine history of straight men frequenting public restrooms for sexual encounters with other men. For Jane Ward, these sexual practices reveal a unique social space where straight white men can—and do—have sex with other straight white men; in fact, she argues, to do so reaffirms rather than challenges their gender and racial identity.Ward illustrates that sex between straight white men allows them to leverage whiteness and masculinity to authenticate their heterosexuality in the context of sex with men. By understanding their same-sex sexual practice as meaningless, accidental, or even necessary, straight white men can perform homosexual contact in heterosexual ways. These sex acts are not slippages into a queer way of being or expressions of a desired but unarticulated gay identity. Instead, Ward argues, they reveal the fluidity and complexity that characterizes all human sexual desire. In the end, Ward’s analysis offers a new way to think about heterosexuality—not as the opposite or absence of homosexuality, but as its own unique mode of engaging in homosexual sex, a mode characterized by pretense, dis-identification and racial and heterosexual privilege. Daring, insightful, and brimming with wit, Not Gay is a fascinating new take on the complexities of heterosexuality in the modern era.Praise for Not Gay“Clear-eyed and unsqueamish, Not Gay defiantly insists that sex between contemporary American straight white men is in fact meaningful sex that can't—and shouldn't—just be hand-waved away. Jane Ward provides a timely and convincing corrective.” —Hanne Blank, author of Virgin: The Untouched History“Not Gay is nothing less than a breath of fresh air. This book is certain to change the way that we think about heterosexuality’s relations with the homoerotic.”—Roderick Ferguson, author of Aberrations in Black: Toward a Queer of Color CritiqueJane Ward is associate professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies at University of California Riverside, where she teaches courses in feminist, queer, and heterosexuality studies. Her published essays have focused on a broad range of topics including feminist pornography, queer parenting, gay pride festivals, HIV/AIDS organizing, same-sex marriage, and the social construction of heterosexuality. Her first book, Respectably Queer: Diversity Culture in LGBT Activist Organizations, was named by The Progressive magazine as a best book of 2008.  Her second book, Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men, will be released by New York University Press in July 2015.Ward is founder of the feminist blog FeministPigs.com and cofounder, along with CJ Pascoe and Tey Meadow, of SocialInqueery.com. She cofounded the queer burlesque troupe “The Miracle Whips” in 2004 and founded the parenting collective “L.A.
