Dr. Jeff Messer has 30+ years of working with XC and distance athletes and is the only coach to have won both a men's and women's Nike XC Championship but also at 2 quality schools and was the USTFCCCA National Girl's High School XC Coach of the Year.
Middle-distance star, marathoner, and Brooks runner Jess McClain joins the show for the first time today, with her sights set on an Olympic qualifying time on the track. In February of 2024, Jess came in fourth place at the Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando with a time of 2:25.46; this was just her third marathon ever. Jess coached herself leading up to the 2024 Olympic Trials, while working full-time in marketing and training without a sponsor. Jess had previously worked with her high school coach, Jeff Messer, after graduating from Stanford, but took a hiatus from competitive running in 2020 when the pandemic hit.Impressively, Jess negotiated her own deal with Brooks after the Olympic Trials, showing savvy both on the track and roads but also in the negotiating room.In high school at Xavier College Prep in Arizona, Jess was a 14-time state champion; four-time Foot Locker finalist; and Gatorade Runner of the Year in track and cross country.Collegiately she ran for Stanford, where was a 7-time All-American, 2-time PAC 12 Champion in the 10,000m; and had an NCAA-leading time in the 5,000m in 2015.Professionally, Jess has held the title of Executive Director of the Johnjay & Rich #LoveUp Foundation, and has worked as a marketing consultant. In today's conversation, Jess goes into her mindset, her 2025 racing schedule, her new coach, and how she's structuring training, what she's learned through the process of returning to running, lessons from the last year, and so much more.Jess always brings so much wisdom to our conversations, and I hope you'll take the time to learn from her successful career. Messer enters the 2023 season as the all-time winningest coach in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference history and his 1072 career victories put him 12th in Div. II baseball. Messer has led Slippery Rock to 13 NCAA Regionals and 4 College World Series appearances. Messer has done a tremendous job building consistency in the program with only three losing seasons in 37 years with only one scholarship. Messer has been instrumental to the ABCA with his work as the Div. II Committee Chair and as a Board Member. This is a great way to kick off convention week. We will have our convention preview with the ABCA Staff coming up tomorrow. Thanks again to everyone that has made this a record year for the ABCA. Jeff Messer has had a success run with his Robin Hood:Legend of Sherwood plays and is now in the process of switching from play writing to comic book writing as he adapts the story into graphic novel form. As of the posting of this episode, the kickstarter for volume 2 will be entering the final two weeks of its campaign. We discuss how the switch to comics offers a different approach to storytelling and some of the benefits that come from funding a project through kickstarter. I have to admit that we do fanboy a little over some of the legendary comic book artists who are collaborating on his project. And at the very end of the interview, Jeff offers an exclusive reward for Into the Greenwood listeners. Jeff Messer, PhD, is my guest on this episode. I recorded the episode with Jeff in the spring of 2020 for the Coaching Runners Podcast, at a time when runners were asking a simple question: Can I train as I normally do during Covid? Because so many runners are asking the same question as we head into the winter, I thought I should repost this interview. Jeff shares his recommendations based partly on two primary research articles, which you can read at the links below. The conversation also includes a discussion of training for high school athletes, which I think you'll find interesting if you're a student of the sport. Thanks Jeff! Three former guests on the podcast discuss a variety of topics, starting with a definition of the term “speed” and how that term fits into the training of distance runners. Specifically, Jeff Boelé and John O’Malley discuss acceleration and why it may or may not be useful for distance runners. The conversation then moves on to a discussion of terminology across a spectrum of intensities, including threshold and vVo2max running. Later in the podcast John and Jeff Boelé address a question Joan Hunter submitted regarding sub-max velocity work and their answers are fantastic. This podcast is in many ways an extension of the conversations these three men and Jay Johnson have been engaging in via a text thread for the past year. While technical at times, the majority of the information in this podcast will be useful for coaches with two years of experience, coaches with 20 years of experience and everyone in between. For complete show notes visit CoachJayJohnson.com. Included is the link to the 20-minute video of Jeff Boelé’s neural session practice, the video that John O’Malley says is a must-watch. If you'd like some transcribed excerpts of this podcast please join Jay’s email list by visiting CoachJayJohnson.com. Finally, John, Dr. Messer and Jay all spoke at the 2020 Boulder Running Clinics and at the end of the podcast Jay shares a coupon code that will give you $10 off those videos. Visit BoulderRunningClinics.com to purchase the videos. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ John O’Malley A Brooks “Top 25 Most Inspiring Coaches” award winner, Coach O’Malley has an unprecedented coaching resume. He has had the unique ability to coach the “average” runner in addition to being able to take elite runners to the highest levels in Illinois and United States history. His cross country teams at Sandburg H.S. have qualified for state 14 years in a row, which accounts for every year he’s been coaching. His teams have placed in the top 10 in state eight separate occasions out, including three top-four finishes, a runner up in 2014 and a state championship in 2015. Without their #2 runner, his team placed 4th at NXN in 2015 after qualifying and placing 16th in 2014. In addition to coaching two NXN teams, he has coached two individual qualifiers. He coached two-time Illinois state champion, 8:29 2-miler, 3:59 miler, only double Footlocker and Nike National Champion, Lukas Verzbicas. Last year Dylan Jacobs won Footlocker Midwest Regional, making Coach O’Malley the only coach to have coached two Footlocker Midwest Regional champions. Jacobs would go on to be a double All-American at NXN and Footlocker as a junior. At Detweiller Park, the Illinois state cross country course since 1972, two of O’Malley’s runners have broken 14:00, a feat only achieved by a total of six runners in Illinois history. His ability to create a culture in which all his athletes are fully engaged and determined is perhaps best exemplified by David Gleisner who as a healthy senior did not manage to make the team’s top seven and run at state or nationals, but would run 9:16 for 3200 that spring. On the track, O’Malley has coached five runners who have run 4:10 or better for 1600 and 15 runners 1:57 or better in the 800. His 4 x 800 relays have been most dominant. Having run 7:46 or better for the last six consecutive seasons, they placed in the top five in state seven times, including two state champion relays and setting the Illinois State Record of 7:37.3. In all, he’s had ten different foursomes run under 7:48. Additionally, Sean Torpy set the all-time Illinois State Record in the 800 of 1:47.9. His 4 x mile relay won the 2016 New Balance Indoor National title. Sean Torpy would go on to become the Illinois state champion in the 1600, Chris Torpy the Illinois state 800 meter champion, and his team won three of the four distance events at the state meet in 2016, a feat only achieved two other times in state history. Last spring, after graduating three of his four state champions from 2016, his 4 x 800 came back to place 2nd in state in 7:46 and Dylan Jacobs ran 4:07 for 1600. O’Malley has coached three Gatorade Athletes of the Year: Lukas Verzbicas, Sean Torpy and Dylan Jacobs. The Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Coach of the Year, NFHS Coach of the Year, United States Track and Cross Country Federation Coach of the Year, Coach O’Malley’s coaching resume is perhaps only surpassed by his teaching accolades, which includes the Northwestern University Distinguished Secondary Teacher Award, the Stanford University Excellence in Teaching Award, the Illinois Education Association Leadership in Action Award and the Western Illinois University Inspiring teach award. Dr. Jeff Messer Dr. Jeffrey I. Messer serves as department chair and faculty in exercise physiology for the Exercise Science Department at Mesa Community College, Mesa, Arizona. Dr. Messer has published research in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, The American Journal of Physiology and The Journal of Applied Physiology. Most recently, Dr. Messer and co-authors published a 2016 paper entitled “A Simple Hydraulic Analog Model of Oxidative Phosphorylation.” Dr. Messer applies his passion for teaching and scholarly inquiry through his strong involvement in coaching both interscholastic endurance athletes and, periodically, pre-secondary and post-collegiate endurance athletes. Dr. Messer has been recognized by the United States Track-&-Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association as the 2016 National Girls High School Cross-Country Coach-of-the-Year. From 2006 – 2012, Dr. Messer served as co-head coach for cross-country and assistant coach (distance) for track-&-field at Xavier College Preparatory, Phoenix, Arizona. The Xavier College Preparatory cross-country program earned six consecutive (2007 – 2012) Arizona high school girl’s state cross-country championships. During the three-year period from 2010 – 2012, the Xavier College Preparatory cross-country program concluded the associated cross-country seasons ranked 22nd, 8th, and 21st in the United States. During the 2012 Arizona high school track-&-field season, Xavier College Preparatory had twelve (12) student-athletes average 5:13 for the 1,600-meter distance. In February 2013, Dr. Messer began to serve as head coach for girl’s cross-country and assistant coach (girls’ distance) for track-&-field at Desert Vista High School, Phoenix, Arizona. The Desert Vista High School girls’ cross-country program earned the 2013, 2014, and 2016 Arizona high school girls’ state cross-country championship. In late-May 2014, the Desert Vista High School girls’ distance program was ranked by MileSplit US as one of only two girls’ high school track-&-field programs in the United States with “top ten” groups in each of the 800-m, 1,600-m, and 3,200-m events. In December 2014, the Desert Vista High School girls’ cross-country program finished fifth (5th) at the Nike National High School Cross-Country Championship and thus concluded the 2014 high school cross-country season as the fifth (5th) ranked high school cross-country team in the United States. More recently, the Desert Vista High School girls’ cross-country program finished sixth (6th) at the 2016 Nike National High School Cross-Country Championship. Subsequent to the 2016 high school cross-country season, Dr. Messer retired from his head coaching endeavors in order to expand his community college leadership pursuits. Most recently, Dr. Messer returned and transitioned to the Desert Vista boys’ distance program as a volunteer assistant for the 2017 cross-country season. The Desert Vista High School boys’ cross-country program earned its first opportunity to compete at and ultimately finished eighth (8th) at the 2017 Nike National High School Cross-Country Championship. During the 2018 and 2019 Arizona high school cross-country seasons, Dr. Messer served as a volunteer assistant for the Desert Vista High School girls’ and boys’ cross-country programs. Additionally, Dr. Messer serves as the coach for professional runner Jessica Tonn. Miss Tonn recently finished as national runner-up at the October 2019 USA Track-&-Field 5-K Championships and hopes to compete at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Track-&-Field Trials. Jeff Boelé Jeff has a unique background as a coach. In his near 20-year career, he has worked with middle school, high school, collegiate, professional, and masters athletes. With a background as an endurance athlete, Jeff got his start coaching distance athletes at Greenville College in Greenville, IL in the summer of 2000. Upon moving to Boulder, CO in 2005, Jeff's coaching exploits started to diversify. He started working with a small group of post-collegiate athletes and eventually began helping at Lyons middle/senior high school (Lyons, CO) a few years later. It was at Lyons that Jeff's coaching acumen was refined. Brought on to coach the high jump, Jeff took the challenge of becoming a great jumps coach seriously, and that meant taking a deep dive into the speed/power world. Eventually, Jeff handled programming for the cross country team and all event groups (sprint, jump, throw, distance) for the track and field team. He had direct oversight of the jumps and distance events. In 2015, Jeff met renowned coach Dan Pfaff at the ALTIS training enclave in Phoenix, AZ. Through this mentorship, Jeff was inspired to pursue a massage therapist license. Becoming a licensed therapist in 2017 was one more skillset Jeff added to his coaching toolbox. The combination of sports therapy, speed/power and endurance training have equipped Jeff well for his current role of working with professional and semi-profession distance athletes in Boulder, CO. Jeff has a proven track record of fostering a culture where athletes of all ages and abilities are able to develop and see continued progress in their athletic pursuits. Jeff holds USATF Level I and II (endurance) certifications and a jumps event specialist certification from the USTFCCCA. Additionally, he is a licensed massage therapist in the state of Colorado Jeff works with or has worked with a number of notable athletes and teams. Paul Roberts - 2 x Nike Cross National qualifier, 5th place Footlocker Cross Country (2015), IAAF World Cross Country qualifier (2015) Katie Mackey - Multiple time US national champion, IAAF Indoor World Championship and Diamond League participant Lyons high school - 16 team state championships (cross country/track) and numerous individual state champions since 2010

Dr. Jeff Messer is one of the most successful high school coaches of the 21st Century. He has won more state cross country titles than not including winning the 2016 National Coach of the Year. In 12 years he was involved in coaching 11 State Championship teams. Jeff is also the head of the exercise science department at Mesa Community College. We have a great discussion on building a team, what your goals should really be and how important things like sleep and nutrition are to a successful high-level athlete. :45 Background as a runner 1:52 You stay on top of all the latest science, what came first the love for that or the love for coaching? 2:52 Coaches may be looking at a research paper how do we know if the research paper is actually a good paper and good research? 4:15 What is your success in cross country as a coach? 5:15 For a high school coach who doesn't your science background, how can they become better educated? 6:18 Some coaches know the science and can explain everything. Some don't know the science but can tell you what works for example. How important is it to know the science or not? 7:30 If you were giving advice to a newer coach. What type of general advice do you have in what is important in building a program? 8:37 You talk a lot about how the goals are not the time, but the process is the goal. What does that mean? 9:57 What areas are part of the process? 11:41 Often times the athletes we are working with are high achievers, including in the class. How do you stress the importance of sleep to these student-athletes? 14:10 How much sleep does a 16-year old who runs 50 miles a week need? 15:15 How often do you run into students who are not getting enough sleep? 17:10 If you have an athlete that will run in college and another runner who has no desire to run in college, do you coach them differently? 19:07 The question I get most often from parents is about nutrition. Can you discuss what the latest research says? 21:16 For a coach who wants to give something out to their parents on nutrition, what resources do you recommend? 23:12 What is the biggest mistake athletes are making with nutrition? 24:33 Often times you will have an athlete not making the gains they should be in racing and workouts, what do you do to break down what is going on? 26:53 Can you discuss role of iron? 28:45 What should the Ferritin levels be? 30:34 How is the coaching with Jessica Tonn going? 32:17 You have had several successful high school runners who went on to success in college and as a professional. When you have an athlete who you know has that potential, do you handle them differently? 34:22 Sarah Hall had Tweet about running too much in high school, how do you feel about that? 36:38 You have an athlete coming in as a freshman who has a lot of potential, what is your progression over four years of high school. This week I get to hang out with writer, director, actor, and reviewer Jeff Messer. If you ever do shows in Asheville, Jeff will probably be the guy writing your reviews. But fear not! He is a totally fine and normal dude, as is dramatically revealed in this weeks episode.
Welcome to Episode 85 of the final surge podcast where today we have the pleasure of bringing you one of the best young track runners in the country Jess Tonn. Jess is fresh off her sub 32 10k win at the Payton Jordan. We talk to Jess about her running career to date including her stellar high school career where she qualified for 4 Foot Locker’s, her running career a Sanford and how it has been making the transition to running with the Brooks Beast team. We talk to her about the amazing coaches she has been blessed to have so far and how that has helped her in her own coaching career with RunDoyen. Jess’ energy is contagious and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it. Tell us how you got started running when you were younger Started when was 12 Mother worked in the athletic department at ASU so did many sports Tried many sports like soccer, running came naturally PE teacher recommended after-school running program Joined youth team for USATF Ran at Xavier in Phoenix for high school You had quite a high school career, 4 year Foot Locker qualifier, 14 state titles in cross country and track and you went to an academically challenging high school with Xavier, how hard was it to put in the time you needed to be successful in school and as such an accomplished high school runner? So much pressure on student athletes to perform now Phoenix is hot had to meet at 5 am 6 days a week Academics suffered a little because of hours Had a great support system Was there ever a time in high school you thought I want to be a professional runner some day? When made her first Foot Locker coach sat them down and said this was a big deal Wasnt until college that decided it was a possibility You also had a successful college career as a runner at Stanford, another tough academic school. There are dozens of young women runners in high school who go onto college and you never hear from them again except on Let’s Run message boards saying whatever happened to….. Why do you think you were able to make the jump to the next level? Amazing coaches Jeff Messer, high school coach developed well and left room for potential College transitions that were hard were the lifestyle not running What did you study at Stanford? Communications In November 2015 you signed a contract with Brooks to run as a professional. How hard or easy was it to make the decision to put off your career and chase your dream of being a professional runner? Easy decision When made top 3 in NCAA's knew I wanted to keep going Family and coaches supported making a decision to run professionally What was it about Danny Mackey and the Brooks Beast team that attracted you to them? Prioritized what ideal position would look like as far as living and training Coach, team atmosphere were all important Visited a few teams and companies Brooks HQ atmosphere was unbeatable Coach Mackey was invested in each individual Earlier this month you ran the 10k at Payton Jordan, I want to talk about the race in some details and ask you a few questions about different stages. But first, what were your expectations going into it? Had nagging issues earlier this year but decided at USA's wanted to focus on 10k Had strung together 75-80 mile weeks Training at altitude coming into it A few workouts were tough but indicated was in shape Was great to go back to Stanford Goal was 31:45-32:15 range 2 weeks out did a really hard workout and nailed it so knew was ready What was that really hard workout? 7x 1k, 600 with short rest Do you see yourself as a 10k runner going forward? 2020 plan to try and make 10k team You mentioned you had some injuries, can you talk about getting through those? Had to pull out of Olympic trials which was devastating Had to learn to implement crosstraining Last year was on a long run and snapped a foot bone, came out of nowhere Was in the middle of training block and was in a boot for 8 weeks, 12-week block with no running just swimming, biking and elliptical Had to work on the mental game Rabbit took the group through almost 3k at just sub 32:00 pace and when the rabbit left the track things started to stretch out. At 3200k you were down by about 9 second and by 5k it was almost up to 15 seconds and you were leading a chase group in 3rd. When the lead grew to almost 15 seconds did you ever think I should have gone with Ichiyama? No, had a solid race plan Stayed relaxed over the first 5k The goal was to be around 16:00 at 5k and was within 2 seconds of that Was confident in my race plan 6-8k was a little tough but started closing the gap so gained momentum When got tough kept saying one more lap Knew if was within contact with a mile to go could win In the last mile your group started closing the gap, were you girls talking and communicating as it looked like you took turns leading the chase? No communications, it just happened and took turns leading chase Knew that workouts had set me up to win at end Biggest goal was to compete to win With 800 to go the lead group was back to 5 and Cliff made a push then with 500 to go Pagano made a push, and you were content on the back of the 5 person pack, what were you thinking, what was your plan as you saw what was going on ahead of you? Learned to stay out of chaos but aware if any moves happen Knew when I made a move had to be definitive I could have run faster if made my move a little earlier That last 400 you close in 70, and when you went at 300 there was no doubt who was going to win, you looked so strong. Did you feel as strong as you looked? Felt strong and had been working on mechanics and turnover Through all the drills we had been doing I could feel it pay off over last 200 What have been your keys to consistency across her high school, college, and professional training that have supported your long-term evolution to a sub-32:00 performer? Having fun has been huge for me Staying healthy is tricky because my body feels different now Have had to get to know my body Always riding that line but every injury I can see where I made a mistake, they were learning moments Super in-tune with how I am feeling and communicating with the coach All the pre-hab, rehab is important to staying health What are your plans for he rest of the race season? 5k in June Good 1500 at Portland Track Festival You are now coaching with RunDoyen and we will leave a link in the show notes if anyone wants to get a hold of you about coaching. You have been blessed with amazing coaches since high school. You had one of the top high school coaches in the country with Jeff Messer, then, of course, Stanford and now with the Beast club. All of your coaches are successful, but I am sure they are all different in their own ways and coaching methods. What have you learned from your coaches that you will use in your coaching? In this conversation we discuss key findings in exercise science that directly impact running performance. For example, we discus the importance of macronutrient intake after exercise. We also discuss the fact that as runner's we're in "the business of building mitochondria." It's always a pleasure to get to speak with Jeff, so thanks to him for finding time out of his hectic schedule to conduct the interview.

Coach you won 6 state titles in a row in Arizona with the Xavier girls xc team then the next two years, you won back to back titles at Desert Vista. Last year you just missed your 9th state title in a row, but you are back on top this year ranked 3rd by Flotrack. How does the team look this year? With the girls used to winning state titles and falling a little short last year, what did you need to do differently this year to get them ready? How do you balance the science that you know with teaching the kids but not overwhelming them? What does your HIIT training look like? How often are you doing HIIT’s and how many do you do? 6x150 with full recovery 3x in a 22-weektraining cycle. After a moderate intensity or recovery distance run. One key is full recovery. You need full recovery so you can recruit more muscle fiber. As soon as any coach becomes successful the peanut gallery starts talking about how the team is overtraining, recruiting or any other excuse for a teams success. In a few selected cases that may be true, but Ive talked to you enough about training to know that is not the case with you, can you talk about the type of volume your athletes are doing? You have had a lot of runners who went on and had a lot of success at the next level and as professionals. How rewarding is it to see them go on and have success? We are coming toward the end of the season where you just had City, getting ready for sectionals, then state and then two weeks later Nike Cross Regionals. How do you manage peaking and maintaining it for that long? If you have a 20-week training cycle, how do you space out your workouts and how varied are your workouts over those 20 weeks? 2-week cycle will try to get in a tempo run, a progression run, two long runs and 2 repetition sessions. If we get in five, that is fine. At most six. in the Phoenix summer it may be 2-4. What pace is your repetition workouts at? 7+7=7 workout, 7x800 plus 7x200 is 7,000m of work. Those 800s will be cut down pacing and the average may be 2:43 for a varsity girl. And 200s may be 34-35.5. Somewhere around goal race pace average on the 800s and faster on the 200s. 5600m of the 7k will be mostly aerobic. On the 800s will cut down pace and cut down race so may start with 3:00 and end up 1:45-2:00 rest. Compare your reasoning to what Tinman does with the CV pacing. - Early in the summer we spend a lot of time close to that CV range, the faster stuff will be later and we get there with the cutdown start 2:52 and end 2:35 Does this workout play into your race strategy of negative splits and how does a race strategy change for someone who is a mid-pack runner who’s strategy may not change based on who is leading the race? - Last mile, best mile, fastest mile. How has it worked over the years when you get to a big race where position becomes so important and you may need to be more aggressive? How big is your team? Can you talk to us about the structure of your program and how you deal with those many athletes? Talking to the coaches over the last few weeks what we notice is the coaches and the programs that work hard and have high goals and love to win and do hard workouts are the ones that end up with big teams, not the ones who relax and always only focus on fun. The kids seem to want to work hard, what are your thoughts? You mentioned warm up routines. Most teams have a set of drills that they do, you have multiple sets, why do you change it up so much? No one I know reads as many research studies as you do. You do it for your career as well as for your coaching. what have you learned in the last 6-12 months. that is new you have incorporated? We all learn from each other, so talk about some of your influences in the coaching world.
Matt Lincoln is the cross country and track distance coach at chandler high school and has completely turned around the program. First Matt lets talk about your running. Can you tell is about your career as a mid-distance runner at Penn State. What did he learn at Penn state that he has taken into his coaching career. After he graduated, what was his running career like. He took over the Chandler High Program in 2014, a year after they did not make state and lead the girls team to 10th at state. What were some of the big challenges taking over a program that had not been dominant in a while? How did he get buying from the athletes? For a large school the team was not that big, what did you do as far as recruiting and growing the numbers. In 2015, your second year, there was not a lot of talk about Chandler pre season. We train together so I saw what was happening, and a few coaches were starting to recognize your success. But in your second year you ended up winning the team title. Jeff Messer had coached 6 state championships in a row. How did you get your athletes to believe they could knock off Desert Vista or Xavier and win? What was the training like leading into the Championship season? If you could go back and share a few words of advice with that rookie coach in 2014, what would you tell him? All the talk has been about the girls team, what about the boys, how are they looking? This summer at Portland Track Festival, one of your athletes Morgan Foster broke the state record with a 2:07 in the 800. The amazing thing about that is Morgan is a Freshman. How do you deal with an athlete like that who obviously has a bright future? Team culture, anything outside of workouts/meets you guys are doing socially?
