The team behind the Soundcheck podcast series offers their favorite live performances from the WNYC studios this year: including Mexico City-based cellist, producer, and singer Mabe Fratti and her trio; Brazilian composer Amaro Freitas playing the piano's insides; and the soulful mambo of Cuba big band Orquesta Akokán. Plus, Norwegian punk cabaret sextet Kaizers Orchestra, Georgia singer and musician Lizz Wright, and Brooklyn-based Zelenaya with their Eastern European folk songs set to heavy metal (cough...nepotism on that last band...cough.) Also, fiery roots music for everyone by American singer-songwriter Fantastic Negrito, multi-instrumentalist Shabaka's flute-based meditative spiritual jazz, and the saucy multi-instrumentalist Joan Wasser of Joan As Police Woman at the piano. The singer, songwriter, and multi instrumentalist Joan Wasser, is "not a cop" and has been recording for the past twenty years under the name Joan As Police Woman – a saucy reference to the 1970s cop show that starred Angie Dickinson. She's also collaborated with a huge range of musicians, from the worlds of rock, funk, folk, and experimental music. Her new album, called Lemons, Limes and Orchids, has a mostly nocturnal, understated quality while it celebrates joy and love in the face of extremely difficult times. Joan plays some stripped down versions of some of the songs, including the extraordinary title track, in-studio.  Set list: 1. Full-Time Heist 2. Lemons, Limes and Orchids 3. Remember the Voice

For the special episode of The Vinyl Detroit Podcast Interview, Brian had the pleasure of speaking to Kendall Meade of Mascott. Kendall was gracious enough to speak about the making of her 2000 LP Follow The Sound on Le Grand Magistery. Follow The Sound is a unique album as it features multiple producers including Jim O'Rourke, Jeffrey Baron of The Ladybug Transistor, Stars and Mario of Shoestrings. In addition to this all-star production team, Kendall also rounded up a who's who of guest musicians to perform on the album including Sally Timms, Joan Wasser and others. Follow The Sound could have easily become a disjointed affair by enlisting this stable of talented producers. Instead, Follow The Sound is a cohesive work; weaving together various styles all cemented together by way of excellent songwriting and musicianship. Kendall was a joy to speak to as she discussed the origins of the band, the album, artwork and her connections to others in the industry. This episode features extended samples from Follow The Sound including the title track, History, As Planned, Costume Ball and the album closer, I Really Wanted You originally performed by Steve Tilson in 1971. This week's Talkhouse conversation features a pair of performers who came up in the ‘90s, and who have followed each other's careers since: Tim Burgess of the Charlatans, and Joan Wasser, aka. Joan as Police Woman. Tim Burgess has had a fascinatingly diverse career: He first came to prominence as singer of the Charlatans, who were part of the early '90s Madchester scene along with the likes of The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. But unlike many of their contemporaries, the Charlatans have had a long and prosperous career, releasing more than a dozen albums in addition to Burgess' solo output. This week sees the release of a massive Charlatans box set called A Head Full Of Ideas that spans their career and includes hits and rare tracks. In addition to the box set, a Charlatans tour that's just about to start, and a solo album slated for next year, Burgess has kept himself busy through the pandemic with a fun concept he named Tim's Twitter Listening Party. It's simple enough: He coaxes other musicians to essentially live-tweet their own albums, and it's resulted in literally hundreds of sessions with everyone from his UK contemporaries like Oasis and Blur to a session with Sir Paul McCartney himself. A hundred of those parties have now been gathered into a hardcover book, which also includes rare photos from the participants and lots more. One of those hundred is Joan Wasser, who also got her start in a ‘90s band—the Dambuilders—and subsequently launched an incredibly varied career. She was in Antony and the Johnsons for a bit, and she's recorded a bunch of great records under the name Joan As Police Woman. The first of those, 2006's Real Life, knocked Tim Burgess over when he first heard it—as you'll hear in this conversation. Wasser is just about to release an incredible collaborative album that she made with Dave Okumu and Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, not long before Allen's death last year. It's called The Solution is Restless, which is a pretty perfect title, and it'll be out in November. These two have a great chat: Tim is super chill and loves to meditate; Joan is a total firecracker. They talk about how Joan's album “knocked Tim for six,” the myth of Lou Reed—Tim met him as a fan, Joan toured with him—and how Tim, in addition to everything else, has a coffee business. Sort of. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Tim Burgess and Joan Wasser for chatting. Our guest today is Joan Wasser (aka Joan as Police Woman). Joan is a musician, who started off her career playing with several bands including the Dambuilders, Antony and the Johnsons and Those Bastard Souls. Since the early 2000s, Joan has principally released music as a successful solo artist, releasing five regular studio albums, plus an EP and a couple of collections of covers. She's lived in New York City since the '90s, and it's there she met Elliott Smith - playing the same shows and drinking in the same bars and clubs. She also toured with Elliott and even wrote a song about him, after seeing parallels between the reaction to his death and the death of her partner, the musician Jeff Buckley. In this chat, we talk about that track, we talk about touring with Elliott, and we also cover her favourite song choice too. “Inside The Electric Moment” The electric moment is the one where Joan Wasser steps up to the plate in front of her fellow accomplished collaborators to show them what she’s got. And even after being in the music industry all these years, that moment is still one that she finds terrifying. Exciting, but terrifying. Wasser, who’s better known as Joan As Policewoman also happens to be terrifyingly talented and in this conversation she talks to Alex about creativity in the time of COVID-19, her lifelong friendship with Mary Timony and what it was like to see Siouxsie and the Banshees in the ‘80s. A discursive but also perfectly linear conversation, she also talks about why a violinist like her was attracted to Rites of Spring, how she’s staying sane while sheltering in place and why she has no regrets about the life she’s chosen. Joan As Policewoman’s Cover Two album is out now.

Join host, Greg Carlwood of The Higherside Chats podcast as he talks Song of the Siren, invoked entities, & rebuilding Babylon with returning guest, Chris Knowles. While many of us recognize the weird sychronocities and symbolism surrounding some of society's most consequential events, from Super Bowl shows and celebrity deaths to false flags and media propaganda- it's safe to say these occurrences are more than mere coincidence. And whether we are living in a carefully constructed simulation or these patterns are more along the lines of the elite's calling card, the resulting web of influence is hard to ignore. Fortunately, today's returning guest, Chris Knowles, is a master in unraveling intricately woven webs of symbolism and he joins The Higherside to help shed some light on his newest research. 2:42 During their last interview in January, Greg and Chris discussed incoming President Trump, and the potential position this put America in. Now with almost a year under his belt, Chris elaborates what he believes is playing out behind the scenes, from the remnants of a spy war and inter-agency power coups, to the DNC hack and the inevitable fallout over the Podesta emails and Pizzagate. Knowles also offers insight into the Roman theme of Trump's presidency in juxtaposition to Obama's Egyptian motif. 10:15 Greg and Chris discuss the recent NFL National Anthem debacle and it's ties to a military recruitment campaign. Knowles breaks down the correlation between the obvious Pagan ritual displays in sports and entertainment and the introduction of military involvement in these very industries as well as the manufactured controversies surrounding halftimes shows of entertainers like, Beyonce. 19:30 After covering the rising influence of the siren, Greg and Chris begin to really dive deep into Tim Buckley, his son Jeff and the Cocteau Twins. Knowles details his journey into this saga, beginning with his research into the death of Chris Cornell. Chris details the close relationship of Cornell with Jeff Buckley, the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death, the timing of his death in proximity to the Twin Peaks return and the list of never-ending synchronicities. 29:00 After covering the themes of the siren saga, Greg and Chris turn their attention to key figure, Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, her tumultuous career, and chaotic early years in Scotland's punk scene. Knowles discusses how her troubled past helped make her a prime candidate for experimental mind control, induced dissociation, torture and perhaps a vessel for channeling entities such as sirens. 39:50 Greg and Chris continue discussing Elizabeth Fraser, the multiple deaths connected to her, the bizarre symbolism surrounding each individual death and the siren motif throughout it all. 47:40 After detailing the intense love triangle of Jeff Buckley, Elizabeth Fraser, and Joan Wasser. Knowles breaks down the music of the Cocteau Twins and how it eerily relates to the circumstances surrounding not only Buckley's death, but Chris Cornell's, too. 58:50 Greg and Chris discuss the long horrific history of the elite abusing children. As Knowles explains, this abuse comes with a purpose and belief that children are the gateways to alternate realities and essential to opening stargates. 1:07:30 After the tragic and untimely death of Jeff Buckley, Elizabeth Fraser released only two more singles both of which again point to the influence of the siren archon. Greg and Chris discuss the effects of this tragedy on Fraser and what may be some unintended consequences of this archon's influence.
