The Steelers and Raiders were two of the defining teams of the decade, opposites in almost every way. Pittsburgh was a homegrown powerhouse built through the draft, while Oakland thrived by embracing outcasts and unconventional talent. The Steelers were new to winning; the Raiders had already captured an AFL championship. Both embodied the brutal style of the era - gritty defenses, punishing hits, and a brand of football so violent it forced rule changes. The rivalry, and the intensity that fueled it, may never be matched again in the history of the NFL.Get our Steelers-Ravens book here! They were the defending champs… and they were just getting started. After a draft in 1974 that would eventually produce 5 Hall of Famers… names like Lambert, Swann, Stallworth, Shell and Webster… the Steelers were ready to repeat as champions… and while the 2nd year players began to come into their own in '75, the team was led by Quarterback Terry Bradshaw, who 5 years after being the #1 overall pick out of Louisiana Tech, was finally ready to claim the role as QB1 without having to look over his shoulder.  And on the defensive side of things… the Steel Curtain was ready to wreak havoc on the opposing quarterbacks throughout the NFL. LC Greenwood, Ernie Holmes, Dwight White and the man on the cover of the September 22, 1975 issue of Sports Illustrated, Mean Joe Greene were laying the foundation for a Steelers dynasty… 4 Super Bowl wins in 6 years!  The NFL's first two-time Defensive Player of the Year winner, Joe Greene was everything you wanted in a leader… tough, driven, disciplined, and in this case, yes, a little mean. His years in Pittsburgh would end with a gold jacket in Canton and a legacy that is second to none in the Steel City, or anywhere for that matter. Alex Kozora is someone who appreciates Mean Joe and the Steelers and has been covering the team for over a decade as one of the hosts on The Terrible Podcast, a Steelers podcast for Pittsburgh Steelers fans where he and Dave Bryan discuss the goings on of one of the most successful franchises in the NFL. But that wasn't always the case. Prior to Chuck Noll's and Mean Joe's arrival in 1969, the Steelers had been to one playoff game in their 37 years in the NFL. But in 1972, that all changed… David Orochena is a writer for www.steelersdepot.com and contributor to The Terrible Podcast and he tells us that the “Immaculate Reception” was much more than just the Steelers winning their first ever playoff game. It was a defining moment for the sports structure of Pittsburgh. A week after Franco Harris caught the ball out of midair off a deflection, Roberto Clemente was tragically killed in a plane crash helping bring aid to an earthquake-ravaged Nicaragua. The death of a man who symbolized Pittsburgh and the Pirates completely devastated the city and according to Orochena, it was the Steelers that helped fill that void going forward. It's much more than just the X's & O's of professional football. It's a chat with two guys who know the ins and outs of a franchise that were the laughing stock of the NFL for decades… and turned it around in the mid 70's to become the envy of every organization in the league. Alex and David tell us about how Terry Bradshaw finally won the QB job for good in '75, how the Terrible Towel came to be and inspired a couple of guys years later to start a Terrible Podcast… and how one play changed the course of the Steelers franchise and how the Steel Curtain came to symbolize a team on it's way glory. They dominated and kicked tail and didn't care who got in their way… Was it nice? No… it was mean… Mean Joe Greene and the 1975 Steelers on the Past Our Prime podcast…  Listen to both Past Our Prime and The Terrible Podcast wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review and a 5-star rating if you desire. Is the "Steelers Way" of leadership, locker room standards and physical football dying, as former QB Ben Roethlisberger fears in comments on his "Footbahlin" podcast this week? Can homegrown Steelers including T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward preserve it for future generations? Should franchise legends like "Mean" Joe Greene be brought in to teach it? And what responsibility does coach Mike Tomlin have in carrying franchise traditions forward? Paul tackles those questions and reacts to the latest from Pirates spring training as well as the 4 Nations Face-off championship between Penguins coach Mike Sullivan on the American side and captain Sidney Crosby on the Canadian side.

Dan Pastorini is not only a multi-time Hall of Fame athlete but also a Hall of Fame human being. Despite what you might see on commercials, he truly is one of the most interesting men on the planet—which you can read more about in his book, Taking Flak: My Life in the Fast Lane. In this segment, Dan reflects on his journey with golf, sharing how he developed a passion for the game and even helped his Houston Oilers teammates get invited to the Houston Open, breaking a tradition where only Cowboys players were previously included. He recalls the thrill of teaming up with fellow Houston Sports Hall of Famer Jackie Burke to win the Pro-Am and names the players who would make up his most fun foursome. Dan also highlights his annual Celebrity Golf Invitational, which raises funds for the inspiring organization Be An Angel (www.beanangel.org). Shifting to football, he reminisces about the fierce yet respectful rivalry between the Steelers and Oilers in the late '70s, including memorable third showdowns in the AFC Championship Games in 1978 & '79. He shares stories of mutual respect, like Joe Greene and John Banaczak helping him off the field after the '79 Championship game and Joe being there to honor him at his Houston Sports Hall of Fame induction.

A captivating chronicle of the pivotal decade in American sports, when the games invaded prime time, and sports moved from the margins to the mainstream of American culture. Every decade brings change, but as Michael MacCambridge chronicles in THE BIG TIME, no decade in American sports history featured such convulsive cultural shifts as the 1970s. So many things happened during the decade—the move of sports into prime-time television, the beginning of athletes' gaining a sense of autonomy for their own careers, integration becoming—at least within sports—more of the rule than the exception, and the social revolution that brought females more decisively into sports, as athletes, coaches, executives, and spectators. More than politicians, musicians or actors, the decade in America was defined by its most exemplary athletes. The sweeping changes in the decade could be seen in the collective experience of Billie Jean King and Muhammad Ali, Henry Aaron and Julius Erving, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Joe Greene, Jack Nicklaus and Chris Evert, among others, who redefined the role of athletes and athletics in American culture. The Seventies witnessed the emergence of spectator sports as an ever-expanding mainstream phenomenon, as well as dramatic changes in the way athletes were paid, portrayed, and packaged. In tracing the epic narrative of how American sports was transformed in the Seventies, a larger story emerges: of how America itself changed, and how spectator sports moved decisively on a trajectory toward what it has become today, the last truly “big tent” in American culture. About The Author: Michael MacCambridge is an author, journalist and TV commentator, whose books have included the acclaimed America's Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured A Nation and Chuck Noll: His Life's Work. For eight years a columnist and critic at the Austin American-Statesman, MacCambridge was later a contributor to A New Literary History of America, and his work has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Sports Illustrated, and GQ. The father of two children, Miles and Ella, he lives in Austin. For more info on the book click HERE --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steve-richards/support

Watt could have won three by now. Myles Garrett is also having a good year, but Watt is on pace for a better season.

Hour 2: Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Is it a social media thing that people are negative even after a win, or has this always been the case? The offense put a few series together to get the job done. At the moment, Jeff would take Jordan Addison instead of Broderick Jones. He had a huge impact without Justin Jefferson. Crowley thinks it would have been the perfect week to start Broderick Jones. There isn't a current window for Jones to play. Diontae Johnson made a difference. The Steelers need to win two of the next three games. All of them are at home. You need to keep winning because the AFC North is incredible. The Steelers are 11-4 in their last 15 games since the 2022 bye week. Tomlin is 19-6 in the last 25 one-score games. The Steelers are 63-28-2 with T.J. Watt. When he doesn't play they're 1-10. Can Watt become the best defensive player in Steelers history? Dorin wonders how much Super Bowls factor into the conversation. Who's the better player? T.J. Watt or Joe Greene? Hour 3: Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus joined the show. Brad thinks T.J. Watt could be the Steelers best defensive player ever. Dan Moore Jr. played well against the Rams in pass protection as well as run blocking, but would still play Jones. Deshaun Watson is one of the worst quarterbacks in football and Brad's not sure if the Browns take care of the Colts with Watson. Ranking the AFC. Pittsburgh ranks around seventh or eighth for Brad.  What Fan host would have a chance on Naked and Afraid? Someone picked Cale, another said Zeise. Crowley thinks Zeise would be the top pick with Dorin and Donny. Brad thinks the Ravens could run away with the division. Their last performance was their best but other games have been poor! The Steelers have a better schedule. Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. The Penguins looked terrible against the St. Louis Blues and Mike Sullivan questioned their effort.  The team needs some younger legs to help the team. TK has some questions that this year could be similar to last season. Find consistency in depth and details. Lines will have a phenomenal month. Make sure guys are excited to go to the rink. 93.7 The Fan's Chris Mack joined the show. Mack thinks T.J. Watt can be the best Steelers defensive player ever alongside Joe Greene if he keeps winning games for the team. If the Steelers are viewed as a playoff team, they should win all three home games. The Steelers should go at least 2-1. Chris previews this week's Oh Mama podcast.

As The Far Middle reaches episode 75, the milestone installment is appropriately dedicated to the greatest Pittsburgh Steeler of all time, “Mean” Joe Greene. The four-time Super Bowl champ is one of the four faces on Nick’s Mount Rushmore of Pittsburgh sports Hall of Famers, which includes prior Far Middle dedications Mario Lemieux in episode 66 and Roberto Clemente in episode 21. Who’s the fourth face? That’s where things get interesting. While no one would ever call Greene soft, the same can’t be said for today’s American work ethic, and the numbers don’t lie. Nick proceeds to discuss attitudes to work and explains the far-reaching ramifications if America’s declining labor participation continues.Another subject on the decline is America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which the Biden administration has drawn down to its lowest level since 1984. And as the president seems to be putting political gain ahead of America’s vital interest with SPR drawdowns, Nick addresses billionaire Michael Bloomberg taking similarly destructible action. Specifically, Bloomberg announcing $85 million to stop petrochemical projects in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia—thereby destroying opportunities for doers. While Bloomberg attempts to be a barrier to an expanded middle class, you may not have heard the latest from the Australian Institute for Marine Science which reports the Great Barrier Reef is enjoying record levels of coral cover. If you missed this, it’s because no one told you, as it doesn’t serve the code red for humanity storyline, explains Nick.Next, Nick looks at China’s recent coal investments and increasing CO2 emissions. Adding insult to injury, Nick notes that much of China’s coal-fired power and coal mine additions will be used to power its factories and facilities to extract, refine, or make the various feedstocks and components for wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicles that the West is mandating.Shifting from Chinese energy policy, Nick returns to a recurring Far Middle topic: California energy policy. Nick explores a few of the 40 climate bills signed by Governor Newsom this past September.Nick proceeds to look back on America’s Declaration of Independence and points of contention with King George III, points that sadly mirror issues Americans face today with their own government. And in closing, Nick examines the $80 billion headed to the Internal Revenue Service from the Inflation Reduction Act. This brings to mind the great Johnny Cash song “After Taxes,” recorded on the album I Would Like to See You Again—released in 1978, the year “Mean” Joe Greene and the Steelers would go 14-2 and on to win Super Bowl XIII.

The BIG Steelers announcement from today: Franco Harris will have his number retired by the franchise during the Christmas Eve matchup with the Raiders this year for the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception. This will only be the third jersey retired by the Steelers, following Ernie Stautner and Joe Greene. Does this open the door for more legendary players to have their numbers retired by the team, since there are more qualified players than Franco to not have the honor? The guys think Franco's involvement with the team over the years was a big deciding factor.  Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the Post-Gazette joined the show. Ray believes the clerical error that resulted in listing Kenny Pickett as the third QB in yesterday's release. Ray is happy the switch was made because he feels Pickett should be the team's backup on Sunday. Ray said Devin Bush being a starter doesn't mean that he's safe to keep that spot and Robert Spillane is right behind him awaiting his chance. He got into who may have play calling duties for the defense on Sunday. Ray commented on Mason Rudolph and where he might be mentally after being thrown around the ringer again. The guys asked Ray about the team captains and he shared that Mitch Trubisky being a captain is normal – Mike Tomlin has only twice not named the starting QB the captain. Ray predicts the Steelers to finish 8-9 and also referenced offensive line trouble.
