Changes were needed. In 1969, the Steelers replaced Head Coach Bill Austin with Chuck Noll, an assistant coach with the Chargers and Colts from 1960 through 1968.The Steelers made some good draft selections in 1969. Offensively, they chose quarterback Terry Hanratty and tackle John Kolb. Defensively, they chose defensive end LC Greenwood and defensive tackle Joe Greene, who won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Despite these changes and apparent improvements, the team got worse, finishing the season with one win and thirteen losses.....You can read the full blog post here.YESTERDAY'S SPORTS BACKGROUNDHost Mark Morthier grew up in New Jersey just across the river from New York City during the 1970s, a great time for sports in the area. What would you call a Steelers player who threw tantrums on the field, repeatedly took selfish penalties, spit on a reporter, and quit on his team? Most people call him the greatest Steeler in the history of the franchise! In this episode, we explore Joe Greene's controversial first few years and explore why the team and its fans stuck with him. Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live at a special time, around 4 p.m. Eastern. Is the "Steelers Way" of leadership, locker room standards and physical football dying, as former QB Ben Roethlisberger fears in comments on his "Footbahlin" podcast this week? Can homegrown Steelers including T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward preserve it for future generations? Should franchise legends like "Mean" Joe Greene be brought in to teach it? And what responsibility does coach Mike Tomlin have in carrying franchise traditions forward? Paul tackles those questions and reacts to the latest from Pirates spring training as well as the 4 Nations Face-off championship between Penguins coach Mike Sullivan on the American side and captain Sidney Crosby on the Canadian side.
Ben Roethlisberger joked about the Steelers needing to bring back Joe Greene because the team is getting too soft. The guys quickly pointed out some Steelers that are remembered fondly that didn't start their careers in Pittsburgh. They also pointed out guys who are remembered fondly that didn't like Ben when he was here. What is the biggest problem with the current team's attitude?

ALL ACCESS w/ Aditi – Aditi is worried about Kraig's marriage privacy after the guys talked about it earlier in the show. Aditi isn't sure the QB situation is as easy as it sounds with the way the front office leans. Aditi hasn't heard anything on the Daniel Jones front and if he would be a fit for the Steelers. Aditi said the Steelers are in the state where they are open to dating pretty much anyone and not committed. The biggest question about Justin Fields returning is if Fields wants to return, not if the Steelers want him. If QB needy teams don't like this class, how does that impact a Fields return? Donny Football Debrief – The salary cap is going up. Where does that leave the Steelers?
Josh Rowntree sticks around to listen to Mullsy the Snowman. Josh shares his favorite memories of Ron Cook. The Pens are on a run and it might change their plans at the trade deadline. Is it fools gold? Josh was calling to fire Sullivan a few weeks ago. Cutch is back again, but was it the right move? Is it preventing them from bringing in other players? Will the Steelers beat the Chiefs? Is there a chance losing out on the division title would create a better path? Starkey is annoyed by the Chiefs. Would a Chiefs 3-peat surpass the Steelers dynasty? Joe asked three legendary Steelers for their thoughts. Would it also make Mahomes the best ever? Jim Rooney joins to discuss his father, Dan, if the Chiefs would pass the Steelers dynasty with a Super Bowl this year, discussion about Al Davis, Franco Harris, his memories of the chief. Jim discusses some aspects of the Netflix broadcast tomorrow, how upset he gets after a Steelers loss, smoking in the locker room back in the day, Joe Greene and Jack Lambert as the team leaders. Jim Rooney on the Steelers condensed schedule, if Dan Rooney would like the current replay system, expanded number of games, the Stelers next international game, a Jack Lambert story, the hiring of Chuck Noll. Jim Rooney talks about Bill Nunn's impact on the Steelers and the NFL, vacation story about Chuck Noll, and a harmless plane crash, and great Steelrs games on Christmas. The Chiefs could have some serious injuries tomorrow. How important is the win. Did the Steelers save some guys from playing against Baltimore that could've played, but put others needlessly at risk? West Greene's Lane Allison joins to discuss his incredible winning shot from full court. We correct the AFC North standings.

In this special bonus edition of the show I'm joined by former Houston Oilers Pro Bowl QB Dante Anthony Pastorini. Dan Pastorini is not only a multi-time Hall of Fame athlete but also a Hall of Fame human being. Despite what you might see on commercials, he truly is one of the most interesting men on the planet—which you can read more about in his book, Taking Flak: My Life in the Fast Lane. In this segment, Dan reflects on his journey with golf, sharing how he developed a passion for the game and even helped his Houston Oilers teammates get invited to the Houston Open, breaking a tradition where only Cowboys players were previously included. He recalls the thrill of teaming up with fellow Houston Sports Hall of Famer Jackie Burke to win the Pro-Am and names the players who would make up his most fun foursome. Dan also highlights his annual Celebrity Golf Invitational, which raises funds for the inspiring organization Be An Angel (www.beanangel.org). Shifting to football, he reminisces about the fierce yet respectful rivalry between the Steelers and Oilers in the late '70s, including memorable third showdowns in the AFC Championship Games in 1978 & '79. He shares stories of mutual respect, like Joe Greene and John Banaczak helping him off the field after the '79 Championship game and Joe being there to honor him at his Houston Sports Hall of Fame induction.

A captivating chronicle of the pivotal decade in American sports, when the games invaded prime time, and sports moved from the margins to the mainstream of American culture. Every decade brings change, but as Michael MacCambridge chronicles in THE BIG TIME, no decade in American sports history featured such convulsive cultural shifts as the 1970s. So many things happened during the decade—the move of sports into prime-time television, the beginning of athletes' gaining a sense of autonomy for their own careers, integration becoming—at least within sports—more of the rule than the exception, and the social revolution that brought females more decisively into sports, as athletes, coaches, executives, and spectators. More than politicians, musicians or actors, the decade in America was defined by its most exemplary athletes. The sweeping changes in the decade could be seen in the collective experience of Billie Jean King and Muhammad Ali, Henry Aaron and Julius Erving, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Joe Greene, Jack Nicklaus and Chris Evert, among others, who redefined the role of athletes and athletics in American culture. The Seventies witnessed the emergence of spectator sports as an ever-expanding mainstream phenomenon, as well as dramatic changes in the way athletes were paid, portrayed, and packaged. In tracing the epic narrative of how American sports was transformed in the Seventies, a larger story emerges: of how America itself changed, and how spectator sports moved decisively on a trajectory toward what it has become today, the last truly “big tent” in American culture. About The Author: Michael MacCambridge is an author, journalist and TV commentator, whose books have included the acclaimed America's Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured A Nation and Chuck Noll: His Life's Work. For eight years a columnist and critic at the Austin American-Statesman, MacCambridge was later a contributor to A New Literary History of America, and his work has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Sports Illustrated, and GQ. The father of two children, Miles and Ella, he lives in Austin. For more info on the book click HERE --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steve-richards/support

The Steelers are 63-28-2 with T.J. Watt. When he doesn't play they're 1-10. Can Watt become the best defensive player in Steelers history? Dorin wonders how much Super Bowls factor into the conversation. Who's the better player? T.J. Watt or Joe Greene? Callers weigh in on their thoughts and what they saw. Hour 3: Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus joined the show. Brad thinks T.J. Watt could be the Steelers best defensive player ever. Dan Moore Jr. played well against the Rams in pass protection as well as run blocking, but would still play Jones. Deshaun Watson is one of the worst quarterbacks in football and Brad's not sure if the Browns take care of the Colts with Watson. Ranking the AFC. Pittsburgh ranks around seventh or eighth for Brad. What Fan host would have a chance on Naked and Afraid? Someone picked Cale, another said Zeise. Crowley thinks Zeise would be the top pick with Dorin and Donny. Brad thinks the Ravens could run away with the division. Their last performance was their best but other games have been poor! The Steelers have a better schedule. Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. The Penguins looked terrible against the St. Louis Blues and Mike Sullivan questioned their effort. The team needs some younger legs to help the team. Hour 2: Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Is it a social media thing that people are negative even after a win, or has this always been the case? The offense put a few series together to get the job done. At the moment, Jeff would take Jordan Addison instead of Broderick Jones. He had a huge impact without Justin Jefferson. Crowley thinks it would have been the perfect week to start Broderick Jones. There isn't a current window for Jones to play. Diontae Johnson made a difference. The Steelers need to win two of the next three games. All of them are at home. You need to keep winning because the AFC North is incredible. The Steelers are 11-4 in their last 15 games since the 2022 bye week. Tomlin is 19-6 in the last 25 one-score games. The Steelers are 63-28-2 with T.J. Watt. When he doesn't play they're 1-10. As The Far Middle reaches episode 75, the milestone installment is appropriately dedicated to the greatest Pittsburgh Steeler of all time, “Mean” Joe Greene. The four-time Super Bowl champ is one of the four faces on Nick’s Mount Rushmore of Pittsburgh sports Hall of Famers, which includes prior Far Middle dedications Mario Lemieux in episode 66 and Roberto Clemente in episode 21. Who’s the fourth face? That’s where things get interesting. While no one would ever call Greene soft, the same can’t be said for today’s American work ethic, and the numbers don’t lie. Nick proceeds to discuss attitudes to work and explains the far-reaching ramifications if America’s declining labor participation continues.Another subject on the decline is America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which the Biden administration has drawn down to its lowest level since 1984. And as the president seems to be putting political gain ahead of America’s vital interest with SPR drawdowns, Nick addresses billionaire Michael Bloomberg taking similarly destructible action. Specifically, Bloomberg announcing $85 million to stop petrochemical projects in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia—thereby destroying opportunities for doers. While Bloomberg attempts to be a barrier to an expanded middle class, you may not have heard the latest from the Australian Institute for Marine Science which reports the Great Barrier Reef is enjoying record levels of coral cover. If you missed this, it’s because no one told you, as it doesn’t serve the code red for humanity storyline, explains Nick.Next, Nick looks at China’s recent coal investments and increasing CO2 emissions. Adding insult to injury, Nick notes that much of China’s coal-fired power and coal mine additions will be used to power its factories and facilities to extract, refine, or make the various feedstocks and components for wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicles that the West is mandating.Shifting from Chinese energy policy, Nick returns to a recurring Far Middle topic: California energy policy. Nick explores a few of the 40 climate bills signed by Governor Newsom this past September.Nick proceeds to look back on America’s Declaration of Independence and points of contention with King George III, points that sadly mirror issues Americans face today with their own government. And in closing, Nick examines the $80 billion headed to the Internal Revenue Service from the Inflation Reduction Act. This brings to mind the great Johnny Cash song “After Taxes,” recorded on the album I Would Like to See You Again—released in 1978, the year “Mean” Joe Greene and the Steelers would go 14-2 and on to win Super Bowl XIII.
The BIG Steelers announcement from today: Franco Harris will have his number retired by the franchise during the Christmas Eve matchup with the Raiders this year for the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception. This will only be the third jersey retired by the Steelers, following Ernie Stautner and Joe Greene. Does this open the door for more legendary players to have their numbers retired by the team, since there are more qualified players than Franco to not have the honor? The guys think Franco's involvement with the team over the years was a big deciding factor. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the Post-Gazette joined the show. Ray believes the clerical error that resulted in listing Kenny Pickett as the third QB in yesterday's release. Ray is happy the switch was made because he feels Pickett should be the team's backup on Sunday. Ray said Devin Bush being a starter doesn't mean that he's safe to keep that spot and Robert Spillane is right behind him awaiting his chance. He got into who may have play calling duties for the defense on Sunday. Ray commented on Mason Rudolph and where he might be mentally after being thrown around the ringer again. The guys asked Ray about the team captains and he shared that Mitch Trubisky being a captain is normal – Mike Tomlin has only twice not named the starting QB the captain. Ray predicts the Steelers to finish 8-9 and also referenced offensive line trouble.

Joe Greene - the orginial badass. Another reason I had Steelers envy growing up. Matt Waldman's RSP Quick Game with Mark Schofield discusses the Monday Night's thriller, QB Media Fraternity, players who are physical or psychological instigators, a pair of NFL draft prosepcts, and five throws we'd love to make. Joe Green or Reggie White? Earl Campbell or Adrian Peterson? Why do teams score points easier at the end of halves? What's intriguing about NFL Draft prospects Isaiah Likely and Jerome Ford? Are former quarterbacks-turned-analysts protecting star quarterbacks in the media? All this and a conversation about pizza on this week's Quick Game. For the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), download the 2022 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95. There's an early-bird discount of $19.95 from 12/15/21-12/25/21. Matt's new RSP Dynasty Rankings and Two-Year Projections Package is available for $24.95 If you're a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2020 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge. Best yet, a proceeds from sales are set aside for a year-end donation to Darkness to Light to combat sexual abuse.
By the fall of 1979, Pittsburgh was known as the City of Champions. That October, the Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series, their second championship of the decade. Meanwhile, the Steelers had constructed a dynasty, boasting three world titles over the past five years. The fan base no longer hoped for victories. Now they expected them. So the standards were high for the 79 Steelers. But every player on the team was confident it could meet them. Once you have the taste of victory, it's awful hard to give that up, recalled John Banaszak. The attitude was: Were going to win this every year. Banaszak was one of several lesser-known Steelers who played a prominent role that year due to injuries. Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Franco Harris and Lynn Swann, all future Hall of Famers, were lost for parts of the season. But their backups capably filled in the gaps, and the Steelers went 12-4 during the regular season enroute to a win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl XIV.
With the world series around the corner we give our thoughts on who we would like to see make it there. At the end we do some rapid fire questions.
