Bettering Ourselves, Bettering Our Careers (Part One) Today begins the second annual presentation of this month-long series with actress and voiceover coach Kate McClanaghan. We will be touching on the various aspects of voice work and technique but also addressing some fundamental struggles every actor faces. Sign up for the monthly WINMI Newsletter. About 30 years ago Kate founded Actors' SOUND ADVICE with fellow producer and coach Jeff Finney. Together they sought to provide an honest and personalized approach to career consulting, voiceover coaching, and demo production. And as both an actress and casting director, Kate has a unique dual perspective of what is expected of us as actors, both in the audition room as well as in performance. So while this episode may be focusing on the art and craft of voiceovers, these lessons and insights are useful to most any actor on stage or on screen as well. You’ve heard it and I’ve heard it—never discuss religion and politics. It’s easy to understand why. Some folks hold very strong opinions, and it’s easy to get swept up into an un-winnable argument. Interestingly enough, though, politics and religion aren’t considered the most difficult subjects to tackle, according to a 2014 study by Wells Fargo.Barely more than one-third of today’s parents report discussing the importance of saving money with their children frequently. And, sadly, about a third have a hard time discussing money with their spouse or partner, and 25% often end up in heated discussions.Yet, it doesn’t have to be that way. This month, we discuss some suggestions for getting through these conversations cooperatively with your partner, your parents, and other loved ones.Tracking #1-918507Music Attribution: Hopeful Start by John Bartman, License CC BY-SA 4.0 (Attribution-ShareAlike License)
Our office gets lots of questions from clients about whether converting money from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA makes sense for them. It's a great question, because a Roth IRA has some tremendous advantages and it could make sense if you need to reduce your required minimum distributions down the road.As Brian discusses in this episode, a move from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA has some big pitfalls, and should only be done after consulting with your financial advisor and CPA or tax professional. A Roth conversion isn't right for everyone... and even if it is right for you, if you do a Roth conversion without the right planning and execution, you could wind up with a nasty and unexpected tax bill.Tracking #1-918507Music Attribution: Hopeful Start by John Bartman, License CC BY-SA 4.0 (Attribution-ShareAlike License)

If you're a business owner and considering retirement, you may quickly find that retiring isn't as simple of a process as it is for an employee who has decided to hang it up. Instead, succession planning for business owners has a far greater complexity, that often includes items like finding successors, seeking a business valuation, and starting the process much earlier. Its items like these that help business owners maximize the equity in their business and allow for that equity to ultimately be withdrawn. Why else might you consider succession planning as a business owner? Think of succession planning as peace of mind for the business you've worked so hard to build. A good succession plan build in advance of needing it can help you or your family deal with the unexpected, and protect the business you worked so hard to build should you become disable, die, get divorced, or decide to split with your business partner.Tracking #1-916907Music Attribution: Hopeful Start by John Bartman, License CC BY-SA 4.0 (Attribution-ShareAlike License)
Last year, college seniors graduated with a degree, a well-paying job (hopefully), and an average student loan debt of $29,200. No one is surprised by the high debt burden, as soaring college costs have been well documented. While a college education is a worthy investment, this kind of debt is a heavy burden for someone that is 22 or 23 years old. This week we review some of the ideas covered in our October newsletter to clients, where we offered several ideas that can help bring your student debt loans, or any debt burden, under control.Obviously, there is no magic formula. Debt is debt, it accrues interest, and lenders expect to be repaid. But if you set a goal, map out a plan, and stick to the blueprint, you’ll be surprised at the ground you can cover.Tracking #1-896156Music Attribution: Hopeful Start by John Bartman, License CC BY-SA 4.0 (Attribution-ShareAlike License)
