Debbie talks with five-time New York Times bestselling author Dan Pink about his latest book: The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward. His books have been translated into 42 languages and have sold millions of copies around the world. She met Dan many years ago when she lived in DC and has been a fan ever since she read his first book, Free Agent Nation. That book was one of the first to legitimize solopreneurs and to predict the revolution in the workplace. The premise of his new book is that while many people (especially Americans) proclaim "I have no regrets!" that statement is wrongheaded and, as Dan delights in pointing out, simply not true. We all have regrets and regret is a valuable emotion that can lead us to better understand ourselves and even to live our lives differently. The book is partially based on the results of Dan's World Regret Survey. He read through 15,000 replies from 100+ countries and deduced that there are really only four core regrets.Foundational (If only I'd done the work... )Boldness (If only I'd taken the chance... )Moral (If only I'd done the right thing... )Connection (If only I'd reached out... )Debbie went into this episode thinking that "regret" has a special resonance for those past midlife who may be reflecting on what lies behind them - or what DOESN'T lie behind them - because they didn't do it.But Dan is pretty clear that regretting an inaction - what he defines as a Boldness regret - can come at any age. And that it's never too late to do something about it.Debbie reveals one of her biggest regrets to Dan and he offers some on-air therapy for how she should deal with it.They also talk about Dan's "failure resumé" and what he learned from it.This is an entertaining and informative episode. But it doesn't cover everything in Dan's new book. Be sure to pick up your own copy to learn more about self-disclosing, self-compassion, and self-distancing when it comes to your own regrets; when to "undo" something you did in the past; and the importance of maintaining connections with friends.Mentioned in this episode or useful:DanPink.comThe Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward by Dan Pink (Random House 2022)Dare to Lead (Brené Brown's podcast): Brené With Dan Pink on the Power of RegretA 2-minute preview of his new book (a Pinkcast)World Regret SurveyAll Dan's books: When, To Sell Is Human, Drive, A Whole New Mind, Johnny Bunko, Free Agent Nation@DanielPink on TwitterTHE PINKCASTSubscribe to Dan's newsletterDerek SiversBittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole by Susan Cain (Crown 2022)The Happiness Curve: Why Life Gets Better After 50 by Jonathan Rauch (Thomas Dunne Books 2018)Alfred NobelThe Moral Bucket List by David Brooks (The New York Times, April 11, 2015) Note from DebbieIf you've been enjoying the podcast, please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts. Welcome to episode #626 of Six Pixels of Separation. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #626 - Host: Mitch Joel. It's hard not to be a fan of the work that Daniel Pink does. He is the author of six provocative books (Free Agent Nation, The Adventures of Johnny Bunko, A Whole New Mind, Drive, To Sell Is Human and his newest, When - The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing). His books have won multiple awards and have been translated into 37 languages. That's just the beginning of how his thinking has permeated into the work culture. He's usually spotting trends and ways to think differently about how we live and work, long before it becomes a household name or a growing trend. From television shows to magazine articles, Dan works tirelessly to figure out how to make his own life more efficient, and - in doing so - he shares his findings with all of us. When is a brilliant, compelling and fun book to read. Think about when you do your work. How do you choose when to do it? Gut? Instinct? When someone books you in a meeting? These are terrible ways to make your days as efficient as possible, according to Dan. It turns out that when you do stuff is as powerful as what you do. Don't believe me? Listen in. From 2008: Daniel Pink has made a career of being first on business themes over the last seven years, ever since publication of "Free Agent Nation" in May 2001. His theory then? That more of us will be working for ourselves in the future. Well, it’s now the future, so I’ll ask him whether that came true. He also wrote "A Whole New Mind." But Dan’s newest book may be his greatest leap yet: a manga-style graphic novel titled "The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need."
Today's Guest: Michael Uslan, comic book writer, "Archie Marries Betty" Betty Archie Marries Betty by Michael Uslan I remember the first time I encountered Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Moose, Mr. Weatherbee, Miss Grundy, Hot Dog and the rest of the Riverdale gang. It was in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, 1971, and we were visiting our cousins, the Sirotkins. Fred Sirotkin, the youngest of the three children, had a basement filled with shelf after shelf of neatly ordered comic books. It was nirvana for me—and probably still would be, if not for the great flood that hit Wilkes-Barre a year later, obliterating Fred’s collection and everything else in the wall of water’s path. MICHAEL USLAN podcast excerpt: "Yes, we take the Archie story one step beyond anything it's ever been taken before... This has become a firestorm on the Internet on a worldwide basis. The Today Show took a poll on who Archie should marry. It was 80% Betty, 20% Veronica--and Jughead came in a strong third." Fast-forward to January 2010 and America’s oldest teenager, Archie Andrews—sorry, Dick Clark—has graduated college and announced his engagement to Betty Cooper. The writer of this six-part Archie Comics series, which takes us through the characters’ future, is as much a surprise, perhaps, as Archie choosing girl-next-door Betty over girl-with-a billion-bucks Veronica. His name is Michael Uslan, and while he’s written a few comic books before, he’s based known as an executive producer behind some of the biggest comic book movies of all time, including Batman and The Dark Knight. This is Michael’s second visit to Mr. Media Radio; he was previously a guest to discuss The Spirit movie, of which he was a producer. Bidding adieu to his last "real job" as Al Gore's speechwriter, Dan Pink went freelance to spark a right-brain revolution in the career marketplace. With a trio of influential bestsellers, Dan Pink has changed the way companies view the modern workplace. In the pivotal "A Whole New Mind", Pink identifies a sea change in the global workforce -- the shift of an information-based corporate culture to a conceptual base, where creativity and big-picture design dominates the landscape. His latest book, "The Adventures of Johnny Bunko", is an evolutionary transformation of the familiar career guide. Replacing linear text with a manga-inspired comic, Pink outlines six career laws vastly differing from the ones you've been taught. Members of the Johnny Bunko online forum participated in an online contest to create the seventh law -- "stay hungry."
Today's Guest: Corey Michael Blake, CEO, Round Table Companies, Smarter Comics Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of 47-year-old fanboys who could really stand to take a bath and develop some practical business skills besides knowing how many comics fit snugly in a longbox… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! It’s been a while since business writer Daniel Pink was a guest on Mr. Media to talk about his first graphic novel, Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need. That book was intended for an audience of job seekers who lacked some basic skills needed to succeed in the modern workplace. They were also people who weren’t likely to buy and read Pink’s nonfiction, picture-less narratives such A Whole New Mind or Free Agent Nation. COREY MICHAEL BLAKE audio excerpt: "I found Chris Anderson's email address. I said, 'We're interested in taking your book, The Long Tail, and introducing it to comic book fans.' In 24 hours I had an answer: 'Let's talk to my agent.' It hit his sweet spot. He loves to be an innovator ans he is a comic book fan." Apparently Pink was on to something – Johnny Bunko has since been translated into 14 different languages. Now a company called Round Table is working with SmarterComics to turn Pink’s one-off project into an industry. It has produced graphic novels from six respected, bestselling business experts and is marketing them to an audience unlikely to read 300 pages of text but probably willing to invest the time and effort into a 50-page comic book full of immediately useful knowledge, told in an entertaining fashion. At the top of the list of SmarterComics’ initial release this April 2011 is The Long Tail by Wired magazine editor Chris Anderson. Also noteworthy is an adaptation of the 2,500-year-old The Art of War by Sun Tzu, a classic battleplan for success found on the shelf of every modern CEO. I know a little about educational comics myself, having written the biography of Will Eisner, who started the whole genre back in World War II with Army Motors. So I thought it would be interesting to have Round Table CEO Corey Michael Blake on the show to talk about his new enterprise.
