For a break from ‘earthquake news', Barrier Free Japan talks about the prevalence of ‘QR codes' at train stations in Japan and how this might affect accessibility. On September 9th 2020, Kyodo reported that: “East Japan Railway Co. on Wednesday began testing new ticket gates in Tokyo that can be accessed using QR codes to make travel smoother for those without its Suica IC prepaid travel cards such as overseas tourists or visitors from rural regions. It can read a code downloaded via a smartphone or printed on paper 1.5 times faster than the existing system, according to the railway operator known as JR East.” The question is, will the increasing use of QR codes make it more difficult for some in Japan to use the railway?
In this special episode of Train-ing In Japan, I sit down with a former JR East employee. Giorno 1 e 2: all'arrivo all'aeroporto di Haneda o Narita, prendi l'autobus per Nikko (o Utsunomiya). I must a Miyazaki sono: Aoshima, Udo Jingu e Takachiho.

Abe's first term was turbulent, plagued by scandals and discord, and capped by an abrupt resignation. - They called it ‘Abenomics' - He ran again, and Japan's revolving prime ministerial door brought him back to office in 2012. It ended a turbulent period in which prime ministers sometimes changed at a rate of one a year. With Japan still staggering from the effects of the 2011 tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster at Fukushima — and a brief opposition government lashed for flip-flopping and incompetence — Abe offered a seemingly safe pair of hands. And he had a plan: Abenomics. The scheme to revive Japan's economy — the world's third-biggest, but more than two decades into stagnation — involved vast government spending, massive monetary easing and cutting red tape. Abe also sought to boost the country's flagging birth rate by making workplaces more friendly to parents, particularly mothers. He pushed through controversial consumption tax hikes to help finance nurseries and plug gaps in Japan's overstretched social security system. While there was some progress with reform, the economy's bigger structural problems remained. Deflation proved stubborn and the economy was in recession even before the coronavirus struck in 2020. Abe's star waned further during the pandemic, with his approach criticized as confused and slow, driving his approval ratings down to some of the lowest of his tenure. - Political storms - - 政治風暴 - On the international stage, Abe took a hard line on North Korea, but sought a peacemaker role between the US and Iran. He prioritized a close personal relationship with Donald Trump in a bid to protect Japan's key alliance from the then-US president's “America First” mantra, and tried to mend ties with Russia and China. But the results were mixed: Trump remained eager to force Japan to pay more for US troops stationed in the country, a deal with Russia on disputed northern islands stayed elusive, and a plan to invite Xi Jinping for a state visit fell by the wayside. Abe also pursued a hard line with South Korea over unresolved wartime disputes and continued to float plans to revise Japan's pacifist constitution. Throughout his tenure, he weathered political storms including cronyism allegations that dented approval ratings but did little to affect his power, in part thanks to the weakness of the opposition. Abe had been due to stay on until late 2021, giving him an opportunity to see out one final event in his historic tenure — the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games. But in a shock announcement, he stepped down in August 2020, with a recurrence of ulcerative colitis ending his second term, too. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2022/07/12/2003781569 Next Article Topic: Tokyo June heatwave worst since 1875 as power supply creaks under strain Japan baked under scorching temperatures for a fourth successive day on Tuesday, as the capital's heat broke nearly 150-year-old records for June and authorities warned power supply remained tight enough to raise the spectre of cuts. Temperatures in Tokyo hit 35.1 C by 1 p.m local time on Tuesday. Today we are going to look at a different kind of innovation. It's not technology. It's not patentable, and I'm not sure it's scalable. But it is important. It turns out that the story behind a Japanese viral video can teach us a lot about the future of work. It's an example of Japanese innovation at it's best I think you'll enjoy it. Links The Seven-Minute Miracle video Leave a comment Transcript Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan's most successful entrepreneurs. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. I have a special story for you today. No guests. No playful banter. Today it’s just you and me and a story about Japanese innovation at its very best. And it’s also the real story behind a famous video about Japan that you’ve probably seen a dozen times on the internet and on western news shows. But like so many stories about Japan, the media gets this one wrong; or at least get it incomplete. They leave out the part of the story that actually teaches us something important about Japan. But there is something pretty amazing going on once you dig into it, and so that’s what we are going to do. The story I’m talking about is the so-called “seven-minute miracle” of the Shinkansen cleaning crew. If you live in Japan, you’ve probably witnessed this personally, and I’ll put a link to the video in the show notes for any listeners who have not already watched it. The Seven Minute Miracle The Shinkansen is both an engineering and an operational marvel. There are times when JR East is running trains three minutes behind each other at 320 kilometers per hour. To make this work requires an insane commitment to schedule. A departure is only considered to be on-time if happens within fifteen seconds of its scheduled time; no earlier, no later than 15 seconds. And most trains arrive within six seconds of their scheduled time. Part of making this work means that at Tokyo station, each train has only a 12-minute turnaround-time. It takes about five minutes to get the current passengers off and the new passengers on, which leaves seven minutes for cleaning. In those seven minutes, a crew of 22 people clean 1,000 seats, wipes down all the tray tables, exchanges seat and headrest covers, turns the seats 180-degrees to face the new direction, cleans the floors and bathrooms, empties all the wastebaskets, collects any forgotten articles from under the seats or in the overhead racks to turn into the lost and found, adjusts the window blinds, and generally makes sure everything on the train is neat and tidy. In seven minutes. And the cleaners do it all with an efficiency and grace that seems more like the mastery of a craft than the execution of a duty. When they are done, usually with time to spare, they assemble on the platform at the front of the train and bow in unison to the passengers who are about to board. Sometimes the passengers even clap. And a few minutes later, a new train arrives, and this is repeated for each of the 120 to 170 Shinkansen trains that depart Tokyo every single day. It’s amazing to watch, and a few years ago CNN picked up the story, and the whole world was, quite rightly. impressed. However, the CNN story focused on how Japanese employees are so efficient and take pride in their work. And that’s not quite true. I mean, these employees clearly are, and Japanese workers certainly can be dedicated and efficient, but anyone who tells you that Japanese employees are just naturally dutiful and efficient has clearly never had to manage Japanese staff. In fact, even in this celebrated case, it was not always so. This is a relatively recent development, and looking at the innovations that began in 2005 can also tell us a bit about where the gig-economy is headed and the kind of innovation that Japan can bring to the world. The Making of a Miracle The company responsible for the seven-minute miracle is Tessei,

Text by Miduho Morita (2020/10/30) Translated by Miho S. , Heba Abbadi Narrated by Heba Abbadi (2020/11/06) ●In Japan, there are many initiatives to boost demand for industries that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19, such as tourism and foodservice industries, which are suffering from declines in the number of customers. These initiatives are aiming at reigniting the demand for these industries. For example, the Go-To Travel and Go-To Eat campaigns, aiming at encouraging people to start traveling and eating outside at a much cheaper cost than usual. ●JR East is now offering a service that enables foreign residents to travel at a lower cost. This service is called "JR EAST Welcome Rail Pass 2020" and it costs 12,000 yen for adults and 6,000 yen for children. With this service, foreign residents can ride as many trains, including Shinkansens and limited express trains, in NorthEast of Japan, including Kanto, Tohoku, and part of Chubu for three consecutive days. This service will end on February 28th, 2021. ●The JR EAST Welcome Rail Pass 2020 is available at the information desks in big train stations of JR East and the main stations in the Tohoku area. You can also purchase the pass online through JR East website. www.kozvetlenkocsi.hu A Közvetlen Kocsi ezúttal keletre közlekedik, nem áll meg az első határ túloldalán, sőt, egy jó Talgohoz hasonlóan tengelyátszereléssel sem töltjük az időt – irány Japán! A Távol-Kelet vasútjairól a magyar nyelven valószínűleg legautentikusabb forrással beszélgettünk, sztárvendégünk a már jó ideje Távol-Keleten élő Adler György. Magyarországról nézve Japán igen messze van, földrajzi fekvésen túl a vasúti kultúrát illetően is. Régen tervezünk foglalkozni a szigetország kötött pályás közlekedésével, és meg is találtuk a megfelelő embert: Adler György a Budapesti Műszaki Egyetem elvégzése után Japánban dolgozott vasúti járműveket gyártó és üzemeltető cégeknél. Japan Railways Group, vagy független vasutak a JR East és JR Central? Van-e két hetes vágányzár a Shinkansen-en? Tényleg csődbe vitte a japán vasutat a Shinkansen? Túlépült mára a nagysebességű hálózat? Honnan származnak a koreai vasút történelmi gyökerei? Hogyan cserélt gazdát 1 dollárért a Ganz-MÁVAG nyugdíjazott új-zélandi motorkocsija? Az adásban felvillantunk néhány olyan témát is, mellyel a jövőbeni adásainkban szeretnénk foglalkozni – hallgatóinknak igyekszünk Adler Györgyöt legközelebb is „szerződtetni”. One East Bay university student's experience taking a homeless man shopping for some much-needed supplies gave her an unflinching look at the stigma that many place on those in need. San Francisco Chronicle East Bay Columnist Otis Taylor Jr. interviewed the student, who says she was shocked at how the man was treated as they shopped.

Today, I’m sharing the story of John Randolph Neal, Jr., whose life revolved around the law. Neal was a rather eccentric law professor at the University of Tennessee College of Law in the 1920’s who went on to defend both famous clients (in Dayton, Tennessee) and not so famous clients (in Elizabethton, Tennessee, Harlan, Kentucky, […]
