For a break from ‘earthquake news', Barrier Free Japan talks about the prevalence of ‘QR codes' at train stations in Japan and how this might affect accessibility. On September 9th 2020, Kyodo reported that: “East Japan Railway Co. on Wednesday began testing new ticket gates in Tokyo that can be accessed using QR codes to make travel smoother for those without its Suica IC prepaid travel cards such as overseas tourists or visitors from rural regions. It can read a code downloaded via a smartphone or printed on paper 1.5 times faster than the existing system, according to the railway operator known as JR East.” The question is, will the increasing use of QR codes make it more difficult for some in Japan to use the railway?
In a critical turn of events, busloads of migrants are being strategically dropped off at New Jersey train stations to sidestep an executive order from New York City's Mayor Eric Adams. The order limits the times and conditions under which migrants can be dropped off in the city. This maneuver has sparked a contentious debate, highlighting the strained resources and unpreparedness of self-proclaimed sanctuary cities like New York City, Chicago, and Denver. These cities are now grappling with the reality of their proclamations as they face a lack of funds and space to accommodate the influx. Meanwhile, the southern states, which have contended with millions of crossings over recent years, watch as their burden is 'shared' across the nation. This unfolding scenario sheds light on the broader implications of America's immigration policies and the interconnected challenges faced by states and municipalities. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

The Transport Minister is defending the ballooning cost of three Auckland train stations. When funding for two new train stations between Papakura and Pukekohe was announced in 2020, it was expected to cost 247 million dollars. But another station has since been added to the project, and it's now expected to cost about 495 million dollars. Michael Wood says the third station was added after a 2021 review found it was neccessary to support the area's growing population. He says they made the call to ensure the area had sufficient infrastructure to keep up with the growth, with the new cost funded at the time. There have been some promising signs emerging from Network Rail over the last 12 months around the installation of tactile paving on the edge of their train station platforms. But tonight, we're questioning whether action is being taken quickly enough to make train stations a safer place for blind and visually impaired rail users. Last year, a Freedom of Information report showed that 35% of the UK's train platforms did not have tactile paving. But what is the situation a year on? We revisit the discussion about braille's future within the technological age. Since braille's invention by Louise Braille almost 300 years ago, it is undeniable that braille has radically enhanced the lives of some blind people and, of course, has continued to do so ever since. But it is also true that it can be a complicated system to learn, it can take great sensitivity of touch, and is only mastered comfortably by a very small percentage of the population. We hear your thoughts on this and those of Dave Williams, The Chair of the Braillists Foundation. Presenter: Peter White Producer: Beth Hemmings

Join us this week as we journey to New York’s two greatest Train Stations: Pennsylvania Station & Grand Central Terminal. In typical New York fashion there were/are two of them! My guests will be Chief Experience Officer and Lead Tour Guide Justin Rivers of Untapped New York, and Rediscovering New York regular Joyce Gold, Founder of Joyce Gold History Tours. Segment 1 Jeff starts this segment by sharing some fun facts about Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal. He then introduces the first guest of the night, Justin Rivers. Justin was born right outside of NYC, in Hackensack, NJ. Justin began his career as a teacher. After several years as a teacher, he decided to learn about the history of NYC and explore writing. Justin tells the audience of the history of why Penn Station is located where it is. Justin chats about the partnership between Penn Station and the LIRR. The conversation transitions into discussing the infrastructure and architecture of Penn Station. The segment ends with Jeff referencing the original Penn Station. Segment 2 Justin starts this segment by informing the audience about his upcoming tours. Justin continues by discussing why Penn Station’s walls were originally made out of pink granite. He explains why the granite was used; light exposure and cost. The gentlemen discuss the engineering of Penn Station and how it came about. Penn Station originally had dual tracks; where incoming and outgoing commuters would get on and off without meeting each other. Fun fact: Most Presidents came to NYC through Penn Station because it goes through D.C. Penn Station went through a tough time, when commuters were choosing planes and cars over trains. Justin explains how Penn Station tried to attract more commuters by modernizing itself. The segment ends with Justin talking about how Madison Square Garden helped Penn Station become what it is today. Justin reveals that there are still some original Penn Station parts in the new Penn Station. Segment 3 Joyce Gold is the second guest of the evening. Joyce starts of by talking a little bit about her background. She briefly discuss how she got into the tour guide business. Joyce begins to talk about the origins of Grand Central Terminal. The station was originally called Grand Station Depot. She talks of why the new Grand Central was set up at 42nd Street. Joyce then explains why the new Grand Central was built. Unfortunately, there was a tragedy on a train, and this proved to be one of the major factors behind building the new Grand Central Terminal. This segment ends with Joyce discussing the history of the architecture and the designs of Grand Central. Segment 4 Joyce begins this segment by informing the audience about her upcoming tours. Joyce then discuss notable architectural features of Grand Central Terminal. She discusses the height of the ceilings, the waiting rooms, and the ramps. Grand Central has the deepest basement in New York. Joyce discusses Grand Central during WWII, and the activities therein. Grand Central Terminal fell on hard times as well, as commuters began to travel via car and/or plane. Joyce talks about how we almost lost Grand Central Terminal and how it was saved. The segment concludes with Joyce discussing the landmark status of Grand Central. The phrase “Red Carpet Treatment” originated in Grand Central.

Beautiful day in the Sahara today. In this edition:A song called “Train Stations”An ostrichAn underwater show to listen to on your desert island.[Today’s location: Morocco. More on that in future.]OstrichA friend once compared playing the cello to making out with an ostrich. And I get it, because these things are super awkward.After decades on the chase, I finally feel somewhat natural with these things, but the life is one of obedience more than affection.It's not what people see from the outside, though. Because the sight and sound of a cello usually conjures deep feelings of connection and power. It's all we can do to lighten it up, what with the extreme physical awkwardness of the play.And the haunting sound a cello makes.I still just want to have a good time on the thing, and tell the truth....I am currently bingeing this podcastAnd it’s only three episodes, so if you’re squeamish about podcasts then I promise you it won’t take long.Science Weekly: Oceans of Noise[Photo by Irina Iriser from Pexels}The Guardian given us quite a gift. "It allows this really radical thing of allowing homes near train stations." We're all happy the governor signed AB-2923, Assemblymember David Chiu's bill to help BART build more housing on its parking lots. To mark the occasion, we chat with YIMBY Action-endorsed candidate Nick Josefowitz (1:24), who helped shape the bill, about BART, housing, and his vision for District 2 (Russian Hill, Marina, Pacific Heights). Next, YIMBY Action-endorsed Janice Li (13:15) tells us about her run for BART board in a very oddly shaped district. If she prevails, Janice will be at the center of the next set of fights: using AB-2923 to actually implement BART's TOD policy. Finally at 32:45, we revel in the glow of BART housing and discuss other housing bills with Brian Hanlon, executive director of California YIMBY. Railroad stations were the transportation hubs of the nineteenth century, nodes in a network connecting people and places across the country. But while they represented mobility, they were also places where travelers could be stopped in their tracks. In this episode, Zachary Nowak (Harvard University) explains how large urban train stations reshaped city life as powerfully as the railroads transformed rural America. Centralized depots called “union stations” became the malls of their era: private buildings that served as public spaces, but where police and railroad officials could apprehend criminals, restrict the movement of suspicious persons, and exert their power.

POLL: Should classical music be used to fight crime and loitering? Move along, hoodlums. Antonio Vivaldi is playing at Newark Penn Station. When New Jersey Transit upgraded the public address system at the Newark transit hub a year ago, they began piping in classical music along with the announcements on train arrivals and connections. The authority subscribed to a music service and station agents could select from different channels, which also include easy-listening and jazz. The idea, said a NJ Transit spokesperson, is to relax customers "and make it more pleasant to traverse the facilities." But in cities from Atlanta to Minneapolis and London, there's often a bigger strategy at work: turn on the great composers and turn away the loiterers, vagrants and troublemakers who are drawn to bus stations, malls and parking lots. Last month, the Associated Press reported on a YMCA in Columbus, OH that began piping Vivaldi into its parking lot, and claiming to disperse petty drug dealers as a result. In this podcast, host Naomi Lewin asks why classical music in particular seems to be the weapon of choice – and whether it works. "It's been used as part of a larger strategy of crime prevention through environmental design," said Jacqueline Helfgott, chair of the criminal-justice department at Seattle University. She noted that classical music is often accompanied by upgrades like better lighting, improved traffic flow or trimmed shrubbery in public areas. Studies on the specific effects of music on criminal behavior are lacking. But Helfgott believes classical music is historically associated with "a cultural aesthetic that is pro-social as opposed to antisocial," making it a preferred crime prevention tool. Put another way, rowdy teenagers don't find classical very cool. Nigel Rodgers, the head of Pipedown, a group that campaigns against background music in any form, believes the strategy presents a slippery slope. “Yes, young people commit crimes and it’s a problem," he said. "I do appreciate that. But we must seek out other pro-sociable ways of dealing with the problem rather than just squirt acoustic insecticide at young people. "People who really like music of any sort don’t want to have it piped at them when they’re trying to talk, eat or shop when they don’t want it." It's also worth keeping in mind that not all classical music works as a soothing agent. As anyone who has seen "A Clockwork Orange," knows, even Beethoven's Ninth Symphony has its dark associations. In Columbus, OH, where the YMCA piped in Vivaldi, the strategy is being hailed as a success. A local business improvement district executive told the AP: "There's something about baroque music that macho wannabe-gangster types hate. At the very least, it has a calming effect." .chart_div { width: 600px; height: 300px; } loadSurvey( "classical-music-and-crime-prevention", "survey_classical-music-and-crime-prevention");
