Kambri Crews is an extraordinary woman. Not only in her notable achievements (NYT bestselling author, QED comedy club founder/owner, just to name a few), but also how her hard-to-imagine childhood as the only child of 2 deaf parents, growing up between a shack and a trailer in rural Texas, having a father in jail because of violence against his girlfriend that she witnessed.  As a performer, club owner, publicist, writer, producer, Kambri has a full pedigree in the comedy world, as well as being married to comedian Christian FInnegan, Comedy Central, James Corden”, “Good Morning America” and “The Today Show”. (And even Dr. Lisa!—episode 291 + episode 314. It's a joy to have Kambri on Dr. Lisa at this particular moment in time. She's concluding an 11 year stint of owning/creating a beloved (voted #1 venue in NYC by TimeOut New York readers 2022) comedy venue and is turning the reins to a hand-picked, new owner, comedian and friend, Hannah Lieberman, who is eager to embrace her new mantle as owner of QED. Kambri will still be involved though, she's not going anywhere! It seems like this is perhaps, the first time in her life, Kambri feels she has finally accomplished enough that she can take her time deciding on where to put her focus next. In the meantime there's always ice skating and watercoloring to do...

Stoneybrook Reunion: The Baby-Sitters Club Book Club

Though Jessi has only recently arrived in Stoneybrook and joined the BSC, she steps up to take the lead role in an upcoming ballet performance and take on a twice-a-week sitting gig for the Braddocks, another new family in the neighborhood. Matt Braddock is deaf and uses sign language to communicate, and Jessi sees that he and his sister Haley are having a tough time settling in. Jessi is just the right sitter for the job, with her empathy, facility with languages and expression through movement, and close (telepathic?) connection with a best friend who happens to have seven siblings keen to learn Jessi's Secret Language. In this episode, we're lucky to have storyteller Kambri Crews, a CODA fluent in American Sign Language, join us to discuss Book 16. You can find out about Kambri's memoir here. How does a child of deaf adults who grew up in a tin shed with no running water or electricity witness her father commit a violent crime and then grow up to be the joyful owner of a comedy venue? Kambri Crews will tell you how! Author of the acclaimed New York Times best selling book Burn Down the Ground and sole owner and operator of Q.E.D. which was voted #1 comedy club in NYC by Time Out NY, Kambri is a damn delight. Her message, "Life's Tough. Laugh More." is evident as she chuckles about light things such as restaurant staff seeing her use sign language and then ignorantly handing her a menu in Braille, and heavy things such as her father attempting murder not once but twice. As Julia says, "If at first you don't succeed...". We also discuss gross habits like picking at your skin and chewing the inside of your own mouth, having to read the instructions for how to boil rice at least fifteen times, and how ice skating in midlife can result in the ass of your dreams. Christian made a repeat visit to RFB so we could talk about his family history, which is pretty complex. You can see how it does make sense that he's a comedian though—a sharp sense of humor is a testament to his survival skills! His younger brother was born when Christian was 8 and his older brother was 10. His younger brother was born with a serious heart ailment which by necessity became the focus of his parents. His mother had Borderline Personality Disorder and was super dramatic. Let's just say this was hard on his dad too. His parents split up. Christian father enrolled Christian into a boarding school for performing arts when he reached high school age which set him free—well somewhat. This is an inspiring story of a resilient young man who became a successful comedian with a fantastic marriage in spite of a dramatically difficult beginning. Subscribe to Christian Finnegan's new Substack: https://newmusicforolds.substack.com/ and keep you up to date with his expertly curated new music. I listen to new music. I'm perpetually chasing that new car smell. I spend hours every week scrolling through various New Release sections and indiscriminately clicking play. Results are inconsistent, but that's okay—it's primarily an avoidance mechanism! But as a result, I always have at least one new song to love. More about Christian HERE: https://christianfinnegan.com/ Twitter: @ChristFinnegan HERE'S an earlier Dr. Lisa Episode where Christian talks about his recent special: Show Your Work BIO: Christian Finnegan is a stand-up comedian, writer and actor based in New York City. In high school he attended Walnut Hill, a boarding school focused programs in the performing, visual, and creative arts located in Natick, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of NYU where he studied acting and playwriting. He began his stand up career in 1995 in New York and regularly performs at comedy clubs and colleges around the country. Over the years, Christian has been a fixture on Comedy Central, having starred in his own one hour stand up special “Au Contraire”, as well as “Comedy Central Presents”, “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” and countless network interstitials. He's also appeared on “Conan”, “The Late Late Show with James Corden”, “Good Morning America” and “The Today Show”. I was taken by Christian FInnegan's comedy special, SHOW YOUR WORK which he made during the pandemic, because I felt he really found a way to open himself up and share his experience in such an original, hilarious, moving way. I have seen a bunch of comedy specials made during the pandemic when comics couldn't tour, but none hit the level of truth that Christian was able to access and share. This is a special built to last. Show Your Work is a standup special about playing the hand you're dealt. Filmed in a tiny backyard at the height of the pandemic, Christian Finnegan brings his brand of hilarious and insightful ‘social autopsy' to topics that range from the dumb (pharmaceutical names, baguettes) to the super dumb (QAnon). More than that, Show Your Work celebrates the determination to keep moving forward when the world has gone haywire. Onward! Christian was just as open in this Dr. Lisa session about the feelings, logistics and creative process behind the making of this special and how it came into being. Christian has a long list of comedy credentials and other strictly standup specials, so this is a great roadmap of how he made such hilarious standup work in such an entertaining, yet authentic, genuine way.  Brilliantly directed and edited by director Victor Varnado and editor, Steven Rosenfeld. And Christian's wife, Kambri Crews is the owner of QED, where the special is filmed, as well as a contributor to the project in a myriad of ways—some of which are covered in this talk.

From the bestselling author Kenneth C Davis of the Don’t Know Much About® books comes a dramatic account of the origins of democracy, the history of authoritarianism, and the reigns of five of history's deadliest dictators. What makes a country fall to a dictator? How do authoritarian leaders—strongmen—capable of killing millions acquire their power? How are they able to defeat the ideal of democracy? And what can we do to make sure it doesn’t happen again? By profiling five of the most notoriously ruthless dictators in history—Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Saddam Hussein—Kenneth C. Davis seeks to answer these questions, examining the forces in these strongmen’s personal lives and historical periods that shaped the leaders they’d become. Meticulously researched and complete with photographs, Strongman provides insight into the lives of five leaders who callously transformed the world and serves as an invaluable resource in an era when democracy itself seems in peril Kenneth C. Davis is the New York Times–bestselling author of America’s Hidden History and Don’t Know Much About® History, which gave rise to the Don’t Know Much About® series of books for adults and children. He is also the author of the critically acclaimed In the Shadow of Liberty, which was an ALA Notable Book and a finalist for the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction, as well as More Deadly Than War, which was named a Washington Post Best Children's Book of the Month. Granted parole on June 11, he died 30 days later in a TDCJ hospital. So my dear friend and greatest teacher gave me a lesson on how to say goodbye. Christian Finnegan is perhaps best known as one of the original panelists on VH1’s “Best Week Ever” and as Chad, the only white roommate in “Chappelle’s Show’s” infamous “Mad Real World” sketch. I first met Leslie Goshko in 2008 when we were both producing our own shows at Ochi's Lounge, a great club run by the fabulous now-owner of Q.E.D., Kambri Crews in the basement of COMIX the biggest comedy club in NYC in those days. Leslie and I support each other's work consistently and it REALLY HELPS. The last time Leslie visited the station was exactly 3 years ago this month so she returns to update up. 3 years ago, Leslie had just started performing at Loser's Lounge at Joe's Pub as well as pianist and host for Karaoke at Sid's Gold. Today those have both turned into regular gigs for her. She outlines her other music director gigs she's been doing, including an upcoming night at a fancy benefit to honor Seth Rogan and his dad, Mark. I also get Leslie, despite her resistance, to talk about the intense thrice-weekly gym workout with a trainer that she began a year ago and the effect it's had on her psyche. Leslie is an example of how hard work, discipline, and oh yeah, talent! can lead to great things Also please note: we found out more about Mark Rogan,, Seth Rogan's father. He worked for a non-profit organization and as an assistant director of the Workmen's Circle Jewish fraternal organization

She now owns and operates the performance venue Q.E.D. in Astoria, Queens. Kambri is also a renowned storyteller and the author of the critically acclaimed and New York Times best selling memoir Burn Down the Ground (Random House). She has performed on The Moth (MainStage & radio), Women of Letters, Risk! and Mortified. In 2014, Kambri opened QED, a performance venue meets community and learning center. With over 100 events per month ranging from comedy, storytelling and music to classes like embroidery, cartooning and writing, there is something for everyone. Since its opening, QED has been featured on The Jim Gaffigan Show, NY1, The New York and LA Times and countless other media outlets. Performers have included the super famous like Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Janeane Garofalo, to the first-time performer and everyone in between. Also a public speaker, Kambri has given speeches for Girls, Inc., University of Texas, Texas Book Festival, University of Oregon, SXSW (South by Southwest), DeafHope, and many other schools, colleges, book festivals, and events. Wanting to give back to the facility that saved her life, Kristine works as a Patient Care Coordinator at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I’m not Oprah and I don’t enjoy fiddling with your heartstrings. So on its own merits, I honestly would have never chosen Kambri Crews’ new book, Burn Down the Ground: A Memoir as a topic of conversation. But there’s a quirky bit of Mr. Media history tangled up here. KAMBRI CREWS audio excerpt: "It is a sad story. But it's not full of sadness. It's full of hope."  Several years ago, Kambri’s husband, comedian Christian Finnegan, was a guest on the show. We got to talking about in-law jokes and he made a remark about how he doesn’t joke about his because his mother-in-law is a lovely woman and his deaf father-in-law is serving 20 years in a Texas prison for attempted murder. Ba-da-bing? No. That momentarily brought the conversation to a halt. Frankly, I didn’t know what to say. A few weeks ago, a publicist pitched me on a new book by Kambri Crews about her insanely crazy, sometimes violent upbringing as a hearing child of deaf parents. I didn’t really think it was right for this show until I read the last line of the pitch: “She is married to standup comedian Christian Finnegan.” Quick, what’s American Sign Language for “Holy Shit!”? Suddenly I had the opportunity to get what the late broadcaster Paul Harvey would call “the REST of the story.” Kambri Crews Website • Twitter • Facebook • Read an excerpt • Order Burn Down the Ground: A Memoir from Amazon.com Kicking Through the Ashes: My Life As A Stand-up in the 1980s Comedy Boom by Ritch Shydner. I bought 3 copies and if you listen to our interview you will know why. We met when I hosted Fresh Meat at Comix, a then new club (and now defunct one). It was their first show for up and comers. I created a show about comedy across genres (New Yorker cartoonists, stand ups et al) and there was a panel where I'd ask what made them special snowflakes, worst gigs, first jokes. Meanwhile, the brilliant booker Rocky Benloulou brought in Kambri and the two really shook up comedy scene for zee better. There were soon zillions of shows like mine on the main stage, and no clubs had alternative shows and headline "traditional" stand ups. Then Kambri wanted to showcase folks like myself with few credits who were funny (okay, not like myself). Anypants, Kambri took the downstairs bar and named Ouchi's Lounge after the sweetest...

On this episode of HWYW, music legend RICKIE LEE JONES talks to Julie about the messages girls can get from billboards, the barbed blessing of working with a producer whose opinion you trust, and her horse, Cinderella. What a treat to chat with Ms. Jones! This is a huge deal. Then, author KAMBRI CREWS is here to discuss her fascinating new memoir, BURN DOWN THE GROUND. Kambri is the daughter of two deaf adults, and her dad is currently incarcerated in a Texas prison. It goes without saying that Kambri has a story to tell that is absolutely unique, compelling and heartfelt. A must-listen interview about a must-read book! I also have to mention that there's a pretty incredible connection between Kambri and Rickie because Kambri, as she mentions in her interview, used to work at Chuck E. Cheese. And of course, I was therefore tempted to title this episode "Chuck E. Cheese's in Love." I would appreciate you praising my restraint. Plus, Julie devises a theory about Stephen King's writing process, summarizes the "Cat Food Lady" episode of MY STRANGE ADDICTION, pitches the Vern-cast, comtemplates the process of putting tights over recently lotioned legs and compares it to putting wax over cheese, and happily closes the coffin on "Slut-shaming culture," sending it off with a rather disgusting anecdote about the jerk who hosts SOUNDCHECK. Also, the seductive quality of a certain volume of the encyclopedia! Yet another stupid thing to say about a stranger's dog! And an exciting announcement about our LA show with Patton Oswalt, Katie Notopoulos & Ted Leo and his all-star band on March 29th! A show that is neither to be missed nor to be underestimated!

Time out, young and old listeners! Today in the studio we had a crash course on dumb college kids, dead culture of New York, pulling pranks and loving your daddy. First up we had Greg Proops, a comedian concerned with his college audiences, who could never quite leave Harry Potter after age twelve. He also talked about the disaster that is technology and thats when it was discovered that Chris is only allowed to attend parties through the internet. Ben Stein, Eugene Levy- No - Michael Musto stopped by the studio and discussed his many mistaken identities, favorite gays, and Broadway shows. He shared stories from the good old days of a grimier New York City when the Studio 54 made sure the likes of Danny and Chris were not allowed into clubs. The crew wanted to help fulfill gay intern Thomas's fantasy by setting him and Musto up on a date, but sadly Musto wasn't ready to take the chance. Everyone was on the edge of their seats when professional pranker and founder of Improv Everywhere, Charlie Todd stopped by. He shared prank stories, from pretending to be Ben Folds to making a small band believe they actually had fans and many more. All these stories made Myka theorize that Improv Everywhere has caused mass suicide. Realizing that Todd had taught at UCB, Danny once again tried desperately to continue on from level 3 instead of level 2. After being denied he thought about suicide and then decided to prank his way into the class! Our last guest, comedian storyteller, Kambri Crews, came by to tell us about her life post Comix. She discussed her love for her very gay husband Christian (which made Chris break out into song and dance). While Crews talked about the Big Brother program, she inspired the Hosts of Comical Radio to volunteer, do their part for the community and start hiring twelve year old interns from the program. Crews also shared what it is like to have a relationship with a father in prison. Its a lovely one!
