This is the three hundred and eighty-fifth episode of Coffeeshop Conversations. That's a lot of talking and not all of it by me. Next week KMHD's head honcho Matt Fleeger will be here and the following week Nicole Lane, ace publicist will visit the Café. Today writer Larry Colton is sitting across from me. He has authored six books, was the founder of Wordstock, now known as the Portland Book Festival. He was also a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies and the beloved Portland Mavericks. What? No music? What me worry? By the time we're finished that will not be an issue. Welcome back Larry Colton.

But today across from me is ace bassist, all around smart guy, fellow Orioles fan and East-coast compare Dennis Caiazza. He's generally not the headliner in the band but he is indispensable in any band he plays with. He's musically versatile, specializing in Jazz and braciole. We'll get to that. I just love saying the word “braciole.” We'll also get to the Chicken Dance. Meet Dennis Caiazza

Today, however one of my favorite people, saxophonist, teacher and bee person Mieke Bruggeman. She is one of the founding members of the Quadraphonnes, playing baritone sax in that wonderful saxophone quartet. Also, she is the Education Coordinator for and plays in the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble. And she teaches in multiple schools and/or organizations. And then there are the bees. You heard me. She is queen of all the queen and other bees in her yard. That's a first for Coffeeshop Conversations. Let's meet Mieke Bruggeman.

The Album: João Gilberto João Gilberto (1973) Before the summer got away from us, we wanted to record one more episode for the season and we invited a guest to pick the perfect LP for the end of the summer. We were not disappointed... João Gilberto was as integral to Brazil’s bossa nova movement as Ray Charles was to soul or Run DMC was to hip-hop; it’s impossible to imagine its sound and style without his touch. By 1973, Gilberto was largely living outside of Brazil and on a stint in the U.S, he rolled through New Jersey with just a single accompanying musician, percussionist Sonny Carr. Together, they crafted what’s considered a minimalist masterpiece of the genre, Gilberto’s equivalent to the Beatles’ White Album. Parts of it sound like a dream, others like a lullaby, but at the heart, it’s the soothing voice of Gilberto and his nimble guitar playing that anchors all of it. Our guest Allen Thayer, aka The Ambassador, is no stranger to Brazilian music. Though he hails from the Pacific Northwest, he’s long been fascinated with south Atlantic sounds. Author of last year’s 33.3 book on Tim Maia's Racional Vol. 1 & 2, Thayer also hosts the weekly “Brazilian Beat” radio show on KMHD and you can find him spinning Brazilian grooves (amongst other tasty treats) in and around Portland on the regular when he’s not penning articles for Wax Poetics. The band, made up of Asian-American musicians, say that they're reclaiming the term. Now the patent office has appealed to the Supreme Court. If the court takes it up, it could have ramifications far beyond the band.Drag And DanceNext weekend, two of the Northwest’s most ambitious drag queens are presenting full length shows that blend dance, drag, comedy blistering soundscapes, and utter hijinkx … with wigs the size of Volkswagons. Kaj-Anne Pepper started out as the youngest member of the infamous performance art drag troupe Sissy Boy in the mid-aughts and has since matured into Portland’s youngest grand dame. His show is called “D.I.V.A. Practice” (Apr. 29–May 1). And Seattle artist Cherdonna Shinatra (Jody Keuhner) was described by Seattle’s alt-weekly The Stranger as an “uncategorizable spectacle” when it gave her a Genius Award last year. She will bring the show “Worth My Salt” to Portland Center Stage from Apr. 29–May 1. Jazz TownWe're sharing excerpts from KMHD's Oregon Experience documentary Jazz Town. In this segment, we hear from those with ties to the historic Albina neighborhood and the jazz scene that thrived there throughout the 50s and 60s. Find more at the Jazz Town page.

This week: we travel from the front lines of forest fires to the trailer parks of outer space. It's all in a day's work for the Labor Day weekend.Graphic Novelist Craig ThompsonWe start with the singular Craig Thompson. His incredible, 600-page autobiography “Blankets,” about growing up in a fundamentalist Christian family in Wisconsin, was a game-changer, sweeping the awards and redefining the literary depths a graphic novel memoir could reach. Then Thompson completely changed gears with “Habibi,” an epic set in a modern Arabian Nights fantasia. Now Thompson has released “Space Dumplins.” It’s the zany adventure of a girl who has to save her family from giant planet-eating whales whose excrement has replaced oil as the universe’s fuel. Did we mention there are sartorial, talking chickens? How Do Bands Decide? As you check out the fall concert calendar — you probably noticed we have some big acts coming to town, like Madonna’s first visit in years — have you ever wondered how bands decide where to book stops on their tours? Our pal Mitchell Hartmann looked into it for Marketplace.Musician Craig FinnBest known as the frontman of the Hold Steady, Craig Finn is famous for his storytelling, both in his songs and between them. He’s on tour this summer to promote his new solo album, “Faith In The Future.” During a live session for OPB Music, Finn performed the song “Newmyer’s Roof” and told the story behind the music. Alien SheThis weekend the Museum of Contemporary Craft and the Pacific Northwest College of Arts opens the exhibition called “Alien She” designed to unlock the history and impact of the Riot Girl Movement. The curators tell us about it.Painter Rachel DavisRachel Davis’s newest exhibition, “A Trace History,” explores the interplay of ancient and modern China. In her whimsical watercolors, skyscrapers spring up as tall as mountains, and trucks go barrelling over land while terra cotta warriors wait buried below the surface. It’s a juxtaposition close to Davis’s heart. Both of her adopted daughters were born in Central China. Davis told us about how she’s riveted by the speed with which China has hurtled ahead during her daughters’ childhood here. The Astoria Music Festival Gets A New BoardThe festival’s onstage presence can be peaceful and sublime. But offstage, there’s been some drama. The Festival’s entire board announced in late July they were resigning, en masse. This week, a new board has signed on. We talk check in with “Daily Astorian” reporter Erick Bengel for an update.A Jazz LifeOur sister station KMHD runs a series called “A Jazz Life,” where jazz artists and fans talk about moments when a musical experience changed their lives. They’re starting up a new season with this story from Jennifer Mayerle, a Portland-based marketing content strategist, who happened to sit behind an idol at a small New York jazz club.Wallowa Fiddle Tunes CampOne day in July we were driving through the small town of Wallowa in the far Northeast corner of Oregon on our way to Joseph to record a show from the Fishtrap writers’ retreat. As we drove past the school, we couldn’t help but notice the front lawn was filled with tents. What was the reason for a full-scale summer camp out at school? Meet Fiddle Tunes Camp.Fire Fighting Meets PhotographyAlan Thornton’s photography career has taken him from the deserts of the Southwest U.S. to distant lands like Turkey and Cambodia, but there was one shot that he could never get close enough to snap: a forest fire. So this spring, Thornton took a wildland firefighting course. Since then, he has found a new job working as a photographer and a firefighter. You can hear to the full conversation on Think Out Loud.

This week, a tasty sound sandwich consisting of two ingredients:1) We've got advance coverage of the Seattle Art Fair with a Think Out Loud discussion on the Pacific Northwest's foray into the high-end art fair market. If you're just tuning in, art fairs have become a driving force in how artists and gallerists move new work. Seattle dealers are trying to connect with high-level patrons with their own four-day event. His sensibility brings together respect for straight-ahead jazz classics with huge enthusiasm for forward-thinking sounds — especially those originating in the Portland scene.Matt doesn't brag about it, but under his direction, KMHD has grown a lot. In 2012, "Jazz Times" magazine named it "Station of the Year." Matt's also written articles for NPR Music on various subjects, including Portland's progressive scene. We asked him about how he tackles programming for a format that encompasses so many sounds, from trad jazz and ragtime to hard bop to big bands to fusion to free jazz to funk.
