Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! In case you hadn't noticed, we love a good cover version! This episode, we're looking at covers - staples, covers from strange sources, and some songs that have had a LOT of covers, including a bunch of covers of Bowie's “Heroes”. Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is “Is This It?” by The Strokes. This punk/Britpop-influenced album got rave reviews on release in 2001 from Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, and New Musical Express. We're not convinced. In Knockin' on Heaven's Door, we mourn the loss of Wayne Osmond (of the Osmond Brothers), Chad Morgan, the Aussie country great, and Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul and Mary. We hope they get to sing a rousing chorus of “Puff the Magic Dragon together. As usual, there's heaps of fun. Enjoy!! Send us a textThis episode spends time with Nick Lowe, a British performer, who started out with pub rock band, Brinsley Schwarz, and Dave Edmunds' Rockpile. Lowe's solo career has produced a huge bunch of great songs – many of which you've heard, even if you've not heard of him - which have been hits for him AND covered by some amazing people! A suggestion from listener Nick from Victoria, this episode was the most fun we've had for some time! Rock News features some standards – Oasis touring (yeah, right!), a new single and album from The Cure, Ozzy Osbourne inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and The Eagles playing a 10-week residency in Las Vegas. Yep, more of the same! Our “Album You Must Listen to Before you Die” is Doggystyle (1993) by Snoop Doggy Dogg. We decide “Who cares?”. Instead, we talk about Snoop Dogg's presence in TV and movies since the 90's, including the 2024 Olympics! The Big Mates discuss Godzilla, a car crash, The Lion King, and Lifes Rich Pageant by R.E.M.Adam, Steve, and Lucas continue their deep dive into the career and discography of R.E.M. by finishing up their track-by-track analysis of the band's fourth studio album, released in 1986. They talk about the writing and recording process, the context surrounding the songs, and offer up analysis, opinions, and thoughts from three differing perspectives on music, from being deeply into analysis and music, to not caring for art or critique, and everything in between. They bring the track-by-track to a close, exploring the meaning of the songs, the varying energies across the album, and talk about what does and does not constitute a "hidden track." They sum up their thoughts on the album, give scores, and discuss how it was received when it came. They also find time to discuss the band's 1986 Pageantry Tour, what that was like, and whether or not the album predicted grunge in some ways. How do we feel about the album? The Big Mates discuss BIG NEWS, Band of Brothers, animals, and Lifes Rich Pageant by R.E.M.Adam, Steve, and Lucas continue their deep dive into the career and discography of R.E.M. by starting their analysis of the band's fourth studio album, released in 1986. They talk about the writing and recording process, the context surrounding the songs, and offer up analysis, opinions, and thoughts from three differing perspectives on music, from being deeply into analysis and music, to not caring for art or critique, and everything in between. They touch on how the band changed their process again for the recording of this album, and how much of that was a reaction to their previous record. They explore the new songwriting technniques, the band's new way of working in the studio, and the relationship they formed with a new producer, before digging into the form, artwork, and themes of the album itself. They also spend some time looking at the wider musical landscape of the mid-80s, the best selling albums of the time, and where R.E.M. fit into it all!How did R.E.M. fit into the musical tendencies of the 80s? Welcome to part two of our R.E.M. series! Now that the context is out the way, we dive headlong into their discography. In Side B we talk about all the records the released on I.R.S., and also dispense some trivia about the band during the time on the label. We talk about Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, Lifes Rich Pageant and Document, discussing our highlights, lowlights, and our overall impressions of the band's early output.
Ultimate Spotify maven Marlana May Carlson comes back on Jagbags to talk the career and the music of Athens-based college radio legends R.E.M. What albums are their best? How did you first come to the band and what was your initial take? Did you ever see them in concert? What R.E.M. tunes make the best children's songs? What is their worst album? Most overrated songs? Did you listen to any albums after "Up"? And is "Automatic For The People" their masterpiece or the moment they hit rock bottom? Tune in for all things Stipe, Mills, Berry and Buck!
REM are often viewed by casual listeners as a lighter-style rock band. This is deceptive, with the band offering complex songs with obscure lyrics, brilliant playing, covers, and an incredible refusal to compromise. The boys talk through REM's development from their rock cliche start – the singer, Michael Stipe, met guitarist Peter Buck in the record shop where Buck worked - to their becoming one of the biggest-ever bands in the world – all without selling out. MOJO Magazine called them an ensemble growl adorned with heavenly harmonies which describes perfectly how their beautiful melodies, with disaffected, jaded lyrics, were influenced by The Velvet Underground. In turn they influenced such key bands as Nirvana and Pavement, as well as Radiohead, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, The Pixies and The Smiths. Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” is 1971's “Aqualung” by Jethro Tull. It's a special album of contrast full of brave variations – from gentle acoustic breaks to Martin Barre's power chords and Ian Anderson's tough vocals. The Dickensian quality of many of the lyrics challenges organised religion. Mick & Jeff both have great memories of this album, including the night that Jeff's keyboard player from his band, Ocean, blew the crowd away with the piano intro lifted from “Locomotive Breath” during a show south of Sydney. We look at The Stones' new album, “Hackney Diamonds”, their first in 18 years. Jeff thinks it's pretty good, but Mick still keeps comparing every new Stones record to “Exiles on Main Street”. Jeff brings some bad news. The Bored Ape Yacht Club, famed distributor of NFTs (as credible as digital currency!) has gone belly-up, driving another nail into the digital con artist industry. If you were to plot R.E.M's path from underground buzz to household name, their fourth studio album Lifes Rich Pageant was the turning point. Coming out of a miserable recording experience in London with Fables of the Reconstruction in 1985, the band heads back to the states and are determined to inject some energy and creativity back into their music. The result is the loud, invigorating, and often spontaneous fourth album. R.E.M. did a lot of interesting things on this album, utilizing banjos, organs, and pianos, all while maintaining both the edge and the softness of their brand of alt rock that would soon propel Michael Stipe and co. to mainstream mega-stardom. R.E.M. pulls out of its nosedive with an album whose title also serves as its mission statement. It was lauded as a return to form for the band, compared to Lifes Rich Pageant, and talked up as the album that Monster was supposed to be. But does it stand up on its own merits, or does it only succeed because it follows Around the Sun?
Their first platinum record. Their first top ten single. Their first kinda bad album? It was 1987 and R.E.M. was staring down their last album with IRS. Continuing the trend from Lifes Rich Pageant, they wanted it to be loud and political. That may have been the right move commercially, but we come down on the side that Document is, overall, no great shakes. Listen to our 30 year old hot takes today!
The top half is R.E.M. at the top of their game, and the bottom half is, appropriately, some bullshit. After the misery of recording Fables of the Reconstruction, R.E.M. wanted a win. So they headed to Indiana to record with John Cougar Mellencamp's producer, with the express goal of making a big dumb rocker. The result is one half of a very good album. Political, clear, resonant. And one half of a shambling mess.
In the third episode of Liberally Correct, Eric Mack and Brett Madsen get into the finer details of Bernie Sanders' proposed revolution and whether people actually want what he was proposing. Brett contrasts his recent year in China with some of the goals of the Sanders campaign. They then examine income and wealth inequality and discuss the historical role that the industrial revolution played in the writing of The Communist Manifesto. They also wonder how much the current economic anxiety has to do with the digital/information revolution and whether the current income and wealth inequality will even out over time, as it did after the industrial revolution ended. Eric and Brett then list several things we need to do to have a better democracy. And finally, they ask the question, "Would Bernie have won against Trump?"
Wes Pence is an Ohio born and bred musician. His current project is The Ready Stance who are working on a new album. We sit down to discuss the 1986 album Lifes Rich Pageant by REM.
