Welcome back to another episode of The Video Store Podcast! Today, we're taking a swing at a lineup of classic baseball movies that capture the spirit of the game and the stories that warm the hearts of its fans. Whether you're a fan of the game or just love a good underdog story, these films are sure to hit a home run.First up, we have The Bad News Bears (1976), a true classic that combines humor and heart in equal measure. This film tells the story of a ragtag group of misfit Little Leaguers and their very flawed coach, who find themselves struggling to compete. It's a story about overcoming odds, and its raw portrayal of young athletes is refreshing and memorable.Next at bat, The Sandlot (1993). This isn't just a movie, for many it's become a summer tradition. Set in the early '60s, it follows a group of young friends who share unforgettable adventures centered around playing ball in their local sandlot. It's a touching tale about friendship, growing up, and the magic of baseball. If you ever wondered where, "You're killing me, Smalls!"is from, you are about to get your answer.Sliding into third, we've got Rookie of the Year (1993). Imagine being a 12-year-old who suddenly acquires an incredibly strong pitching arm after a freak accident. That's exactly what happens to young Henry Rowengartner, leading him to the major leagues. This one is a fantastic mix of comedy and wish fulfillment that reminds us why we love sports.Rounding off the list is Angels in the Outfield (1994). This heartwarming film blends fantasy and sports to tell the story of a young boy who prays for his hapless team to win the championship. Real angels answer his prayers, leading to some miraculous baseball plays. Baseball is at its center, but the film is about hope, belief, and the power of a little divine intervention.Whether these films remind you of warm, dusty days spent with friends or simply serve as a delightful watch, each movie offers something unique. 7 - 12 - 22 HOW OLD ARE THESE LITTLE LEAGUERS by Maine's Coast 93.1
Today Jen and Aaron are talking to Rich Coletta, He is a former Mariners and Red Sox scout, pitching coach, and former D1 and D3 coach. Rich joins the show to talk about his years in the game and gives some advice to eager Little Leaguers out there. Rich started playing in high school and started as a freshman. He was discovered at a showcase and went on to play at St Joe's University. Rich knew he wasn't at the level to play in the MLB, and decided to take another direction into teaching. He loved the game and knew he wanted to stay involved. Right out of college, Rich was able to get a coaching job and made some great connections. Earning the respect of other players and making lasting good relationships was what allowed him to advance his career. From there, he went on to scouting and his career in MLB took off around 2006 for 17 years. Now, Rich is back into coaching. When it comes to pitching, both command and control are needed. It's great if you can throw hard and fast, but you also need to be able to put the ball exactly where you want it. There's an increasing issue with young players throwing too hard and with balls that are too heavy before they are fully developed, causing more injuries. As a baseball parent, it's important to understand your child's limits. Having a multi-sport player will help your child work different muscles. Embrace the boring side of drills, make a chart, and keep track of what practicing they do. Have your kid take ownership of their sport. It's important to be a complete player. Naturally, the White Sox waited until SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, were recording this podcast to put Tim Anderson on the IL, so we talk about him maybe being back for the home opener. Guess that's what we get for lashing out about the stupidity of ESPN's apparent love affair with Tony La Russa. Will attended the Little League game in Anaheim Sunday night — sorry, that's unfair to Little Leaguers everywhere — and cringes in horror at the memory. Otherwise, of course, this is a paean to Yermín Mercedes, José Abreu being on pace for a 64 grand-slam season, Billy Hamilton's .300 average, and the great pitching surprises from Carlos Rodón and Michael Kopech. On the down side, there's the awful defense to ponder, including wondering whether Nick Madrigal — a favorite of both but in a terrible funk — would be well served to spend time in Charlotte, if only there were a viable alternative. There's the equally awful offense against righthanders to ponder, including whether Andrew Vaughn would be well served by some time in Charlotte once Adam Engel is back. And, of course, there's a lot to worry about when it comes to starters other than Rodon and Lucas Giolito. With any luck, though, by the time you hear this, the Sox 12-game losing streak against righties will be over, given they were facing the No. 6 starter of a terrible team on Wednesday afternoon. You may not remember much about the Alex Rodriguez/Biogenesis flap from a few years back; you may not care about it now. But Billy Corben's weird, withering Screwball is the best kind of documentary: the kind that works even for people who don't think they care about the topic. Filmmaker Steve James tries to reckon with them in the film himself, and while the episode is a good one and does what the series has always done best, we wondered if it would be made the same way today. Epsiode 13 of Keepin’ It A Hundo is my first international podcast. I took my podcasting talents to Mexico and had a very relaxing conversation with my “primo” Cesar Carrillo aka Young Al Capone. The podcast was recorded on a private beach at his home in Isla Mujeres. Sometimes all you need is a laptop, a microphone and a bottle of Mezcal to make it happen. Cesar defied the odds when he was taken in the first round of the MLB draft in 2005. Chicago isn’t exactly a breeding ground for baseball prospects. After growing up on the Southside, Cesar was drafted out of high school due to his dominance at Mt Carmel High School. He turned down the chance to go pro to pitch at the University of Miami instead. He started his career at The U 24-0, the second best start to a career in college baseball history. This led to the San Diego Padres taking him with 18th pick in the draft. Cesar played professionally in the big leagues as well as leagues in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Taiwan, and currently lives and plays in Mexico. Cesar and I met thru our mutual friend Too Tan Disco Dan at the University of Miami. Not only have been we been good friends ever since, but he has also been a Hundo Health & Fitness client. We will discuss the origin of his nickname Young Al Capone and if Little Leaguers should be playing whiffle ball or swimming on days they have games. He definitely made me laugh as usual and I’m not sure anybody has done a better job of Keepin’ It A Hundo than Young Al Capone.
Lance Van Auken is probably the world’s foremost experts on the history of Little League Baseball. There’s only a handful of people who may know more, or as much, as Lance. He earned this honor by being a Little League volunteer, and employee, for most of his life. He shares this knowledge as the co-author of “Play Ball! The Story of Little League Baseball®." He attended his first Little League game as a baby in his mother's arms, as his father coached his four older brothers at Cross Bayou Little League in Seminole (now Largo), Florida. His family was devoted to Little League, and the field there is still named for his father, Robert Van Auken. His mother, Ruth, helped in the concession stand, helped by designing the program covers. His brothers, Joel, Harry, Danny and Calvin, were his role models, and he learned how to pitch and catch and hit, but more importantly, he learned the rules of Little League. Knowing those rules became significant and when he became too old to play ball, he umpired the game. On July 22, 1981, he became a father and his dream of becoming a manager of his son's team became a possibility. He managed or coached or supported his son, Lance II, through all levels of Little League, from Tee Ball to Big League, sharing his love of the game. His daughter, Sarah, attended games and helped her family as a volunteer, but playing baseball wasn't her hobby. A reader, an artist and a musician, she did perform with her school band at a Little League World Series. He had a chance to visit he Little League Baseball World Series in 1991, as a journalist, covering a Florida baseball team who made it through the Southern Region to the championship game. In 1992, he returned as an umpire, selected to participate in the series representing the Southern Region as a volunteer. He was smitten. The next year, he became an employee of Little League Baseball, working as an assistant director of the Southern Region, before joining the headquarters staff in Pennsylvania in 1996. He worked in the communications department for two decades, and had many adventures, including developing Tee Ball on the South Lawn, a program that placed Little Leaguers and their families at the White House, playing 28 games for President George W. Bush. Today, Lance is a vice president of Little League Baseball® and the executive director of the World of Little League Museum in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He, and his co-author (Robin Van Auken), are republishing their book “Play Ball! The Story of Little League Baseball®” with Wendy Dean Butler of The Omnibus Publishing, with a new chapter and an updated appendix. Fans of Little League Baseball can look for “Play Ball! The Story of Little League Baseball®” in the spring of 2018.

One of the most revered public figures of the 20th Century, Jackie Robinson is remembered for both his athletic prowess and his strong personal character. The world knows him as the man who crossed baseball's color line, but there is much more to his legacy. At the conclusion of his baseball career, Robinson continued in his pursuit of social progress. Beyond Home Plate, an anthology of Jackie Robinson's columns in the New York Post and the New York Amsterdam News, offers fresh insight into the Hall of Famer's life and work following his historic years on the baseball diamond. Robinson's syndicated newspaper columns afforded him the opportunity to provide rich social commentary, while simultaneously exploring his own life and experiences. He was free to write about any subject of his choosing, and he took full advantage of this license, speaking his mind about everything from playing Santa to confronting racism, from loving his wife Rachel to despising Barry Goldwater, from complaining about Cassius Clay's verbosity to teaching Little Leaguers how to lose well. Jackie wrote to prod and provoke, inflame and infuriate, and sway and persuade. With their pointed opinions, these fascinating columns reveal that the mature Robinson was a truly American prophet, a civil rights leader in his own right, furious with racial injustice and committed to securing first-class citizenship for all. Jackie believed that his life after his baseball career was far more important than all of his baseball exploits. Beyond Home Plate shows why he believed this so fervently.Listen in to a fascinating Clubhouse discussion led by Michael G. Long...
