This week's pick is the 1981 horror film Evilspeak. Relentlessly bullied by classmates and treated poorly by every adult staff member he encounters, a pudgy military-school student fights back using computer technology to summon a devil worshipper and his demonic powers to exact his revenge on those who have wronged him. Starring a toupee wearing Clint Howard, Richard Moll of Night Court fame and Don Stark of That 70's Show fame!
Welcome to Out of the Shadows, a series that dives into the world of (mostly) 80s horror movies. Join Chris Chavez and Jim Clark as they explore the best and worst of what made the 80s the golden age of horror. This week, Chris and Jim continue their journey into 1982 horror films with the Clint Howard feature Evilspeak, a story about an outcast who tries to use Satanism to get back at his bullies.
Our "Evil Easter" month kicks off with Evilspeak, from 1981...or, uh, 1982. Look, we'll explain. All you need to know is this a Satanic Panic-fueled story of a bullied young cadet at a military academy who uses an Apple II computer to translate the Latin passages in a mysterious old book he finds, in the process allowing demonic forces to take over the computer, and - eventually - him, as well. Yeah, yeah, a really common story, but this one has Clint Howard in his first movie leading role! A gory cult classic that was intense enough to end up on the infamous UK "Video Nasties" list, Evilspeak still didn't manage to earn any sequels, even in a decade quick to create supernatural-slasher franchises when it could. So, what happened? We discuss this, as well as our thoughts on the film, and Clint Howard as a performer, in general. This ep, the squad tackles one of the "video nasties" from 1981, namely a movie called "Evilspeak." Evilspeak is a 1981 American horror film directed by Eric Weston and co-written by Weston and Joseph Garofalo. The film stars Clint Howard as an outcast cadet named Stanley Coopersmith, who frequently gets tormented by his mates and advisers at a military academy. Upon finding a book of black mass that belonged to the evil medieval Father Esteban, he taps through a computer to conjure Satan and summons spells and demons to get revenge upon his harassers. The movie was one of the infamous "video nasties" banned in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. This week, we discuss the 1981 cult classic - and rare starring role for Clint Howard - Evilspeak! Poor Stanley Coopersmith, a socially awkward orphan, is bullied at a military academy. Bullied, that is, until he uses an early Apple computer to summon Satan and is possessed by the spirit of Esteban!
Scenario: Your parents die when you're very young, and you're forced into a military school where you are relentlessly bullied. What do you do? If you said, "Summon the devil with 16 dozen candles and a really old computer," then this is the movie for you. Watch Clint Howard incant until he can't incant no more. This week, we watched 1981's Evilspeak with very special guest cinematographer and director Mike L. Taylor. You've seen his work on the greatest movie never made, "Zomboobies," plus other greats such as "The Dawn of Don Damage." Oh yeah, one of you wins a prize too.
We're avoiding hugs this week, maniacs, as we dive into the 1980 toxic waste PSA that is The Children. Bringing us this weird slice of 80s horror are the hosts of Drive-In Asylum, Bill Van Ryn and Sam Panico. While we dissect the flick, we also discuss topics such as standard procedure for dealing with abandoned buses, old-time industry nicknames that sound like giallo film titles, and apple routes. And in true crossover fashion, Sam shares a movie-related cocktail recipe towards the end of the episode! Drop that Caramello and check out our Patreon! We resurrected an old bonus favorite and put together a mixtape draft of songs from teen comedy movies. Devil Dog: Hound of Hell (1978), Vampire (1979), & Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981). Back in Episode 11, we covered 3 Made-for-TV films that we felt were must see! And now we're back again to go over another 3 titles that we think are well worth your time and attention. During the late '70s and early '80s was still a time of great films that were made to premiere on your television at home, decades before streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime were available. Thankfully, these three are available in a variety of formats, but you may have to do a little searching first. But that's okay...the hunt is part of the fun! So sit back, hit play, and listen to us ramble on about some really good films, with incredible casts, and some damn entertaining monsters! Here are the titles mentioned in this episode: The Amazing Dobermans (1976), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Bride of Re-Animator (1990), The Cat Creature (1973), Creepshow (1982), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), The Devil's Daughter (1973), Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell (1978), The Devil's Rain (1975), Duel (1971), The Entity (1980), The Evil (1978), Evilspeak (1982), The Exorcist (1973), Gargoyles (1972), Killer Bees (1974), Maniac (1980), Night Tide (1961), Nightwing (1979), Old Dark House (1932), The Omen (1976), Prison (1987), Queen of Blood (1966), Ruby (1977), Salem's Lot (1979), Satan's School for Girls (1973), The Sender (1982), The Time Machine (1960), Trapped (1973), Trilogy of Terror (1975), Vampire (1979), Who Slew Auntie Roo (1972)

Robert and Nomi join S. A. Bradley, (author of Screaming for Pleasure: How Horror Makes You Happy and Healthy and host of the Hellbent for Horror podcast) on a fun and energetic riff on one of our oldest and most beautiful storytelling forms: the horror genre. Bradley talks to us about how the genre is tailor-made for allegory and metaphor, and how it allows us to have a safe “handshake” with our shadow-selves. We also chat about our "first-kisses" with horror, how horror can sometimes be a safe space for LGBTQIA+ community and other "cultural outcasts", and why the genre deserves respect.S.A. Bradley is the host of Hellbent For Horror, a popular 4- time Rondo Award-nominated podcast exploring all things horror across books, film, comics, and music that has been described by director Guillermo Del Toro as "well researched, articulate and entirely absorbing." Bradley, who has loved being scared by over 1,600 horror films, turned his passion into purpose by sharing his expansive knowledge on countless podcasts and in anthologies like Medium Chill and EvilSpeak magazine. He has lectured at Webster University and The College of Idaho, and alsoperformed his live show “My Horror Manifesto” in NYC and horror conventions like TusCon, FearCon, MileHi Con and more across the USA. Bradley's first book, Screaming for Pleasure: How Horror Makes You Happy and Healthy, is a thrilling ride through the horror genre, its intense effect on every generation, and how you can be enriched by horror. The book was nominated for a Rondo Award for Best Book of 2018. Bradley has been featured in Dread Central, iHorror.com, Horrorhound, SyFy Wire and more for his work in the horror genre. Prior to becoming a champion of horror, Bradley served in the U.S. Air Force and was a firefighter. He now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and their dog, Fiona, where they can often be found meditating in a death metal mosh pit or dancing around a Northern Californian fire pit drum circle.Get your spook on by following Bradley onTwitter @hellbenthorrorInstagram @hellbentforhorrorFacebook @hellbentgorhorror or on his website at Hellbentforhorror.com Download this and future episodes of our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocketcasts, and anywhere else find your favorite shows. The importance of the movie poster is almost lost in this day and age. With the internet flooding social media with trailers, photos, and all sorts of advertisements, the poster art might get lost in the shuffle. But decades ago, it was the first thing used to promote an upcoming feature film. It had to reach out and grab hold of your eyes, telling your brain you need to see this film. Shortly after that, the poster collecting started. Why do we collect posters? What kinds are there? What is it about it that still holds a spell over movie goers? Join us and our special guest, Alan Tromp, as we try to answer all of those questions and more, as we discuss our own obsessions with movie posters, from one-sheets to British Quads to the French Grande size! Put this into your little computer, maniacs! We're talking the Clint Howard vehicle Evilspeak from 1981. While we try to figure out why technology was so scary in the early 80s, we also discuss topics such as things to do at the beach in the 1500s, animal husbandry at military academies, bed cubicles and potato parents.
When most horror fans they first get into the genre, they tend to look for the juicy, red, and meaty stuff . . . the gore. Okay maybe not all horror fans, but a lot of us. Always looking for the next over-the-top or extreme, or just being dazzled by the top-notch gory makeup effects that were bursting out from the screen, we ate that shit up! In this episode, we highlight some of our favorite moments of gore. Joining us on our journey through the gore-soaked trenches is the incredible artist Putrid! In this entry we watch EVILSPEAK (1981), a film about the dangers of combining Satanism with the exciting new world of computers! We also discuss Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey (spoilers, he's cringe) and repeatedly invoke the legendary guitarist Esteban. We're joined (briefly) by an incredibly special guest - The Devil, himself! - to discuss this Clint Howard-led mashup of Satanic Panic and Computers are Evil tropes: Evilspeak! Why are these bullies so homeoerotic!? What the hell is Clint doing playing an 18 year old? Why is he hellbent on playing soccer?! What on earth is going on in this movie? Plus, so much pig-based violence. All this and more! Looking for episode #203? Join us for the Clint Howard masterpiece Evilspeak! Bullies beware...Clint Howard is coming for you! To our dismay, this episode contains some audio issues that we were unaware of at the time of recording it. We have been changing and experimenting with our set up to capture the best audio for our listeners. Unfortunately, we fell short here. We will have the issue fixed for future installments. Thank you for understanding, and thank you for listening! An outcast military cadet taps into a way to summon demons and cast spells on his tormentors through his computer. Data incomplete... Human blood needed. Data incomplete... Human blood required. Thus spake the computer. Remember the little kid you used to pick on? Well, he's a big boy now.

By the three wizards on high, by the Van Daam thirst for lust, by the most feared and notorious name, John Hurt—WE HAVE RETURNED! After his parents perish in a car accident, Clint Howard is sent away to a Catholic military school where he is bullied by Bob Pinciotti. Forced to clean the church's basement, occupied by Sarge "The Animal" Steele, Clint uncovers a hidden room which contains the instructions for a black mass to resurrect the damned soul of Richard Moll. With the powers of Hell and MS-DOS, Clint conjures the powers of darkness to consume his body and smite his enemies. We also inject Clint Howard into Marvel's Cinematic Universe, and try to fix 'Boo! A Madea Halloween' with actual monsters. Boot up Windows '95, secure that consecrated host, and give your corporeal form over to ESTEBAN™, because we are about to Google Translate some 13th century Latin into Evilspeak!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/moviedumpster)
