I pulled out a fan-favorite episode to share today! If you haven't heard it, you don't want to miss this story. It'll encourage you. -- Mick is a dynamic, charismatic, but also a tell-it-straight kinda guy. When his marriage was shallow in terms of connection, emotionally and intimately, he jumped at an opportunity that he discerned understood him as a man and also had a proven track record for change.  After taking responsibility, the MAIN change was his heart. He shares some particulars on why that was so vital in the outward changes of his marriage. But, he began to realize who God actually is calling him to be as a husband. Mick's transformation is truly awesome. But he really took responsibility. He wasn't interested in waiting to see what happens in his marriage without intentionality. I'd like to share Kevin's story, mostly in his own words.  As always, there is a huge message of hope and transformation available in this story, so I hope you'll listen in! After 28 years of marriage, feeling like roommates, Kevin said "I felt helpless" and "very isolated, very alone" in the struggles he experienced.  As a very successful (and busy!) IT exec overseeing teams in India, UK, France, and elsewhere, and really being able to figure out most things on his own... It was confusing to not be able to figure out marriage in the same way. And it was painful to hear his wife caring more about something like Diet Coke than him. Logically, he knew it wasn't true but it sure felt like it at times. He listened to the DYM transformation stories (like this one!). And they sounded too good to be true. But he kept hearing parts of his story over and over again through other people's DYM interviews.  He thoroughly checked into the DYM work and dived into the podcasts. Of the work, he said, "the more and more I listened, the more I found and heard the biblical basis of everything and heard the logic." I am grateful so many men share their unfiltered hearts with me.  It is an honor and a privilege.  I find that many men feel extremely misunderstood. And they have numbed their pain just to "get through". This title was hard to come up with.   Essentially, I want you to have the tools and mindset to figure out how to set boundaries with yourself and with others when needed. Jesus was the servant of all.  He came to serve not to be served.  He was the most humble and meek.  And yet, Jesus set boundaries. A lot.  Here are a couple, but once you read this, you'll probably not be able to read a parable or look at the life of Jesus without noticing His leaning into boundaries over and over again.  Jesus disappointed people because his priority was God over people In Mark 1:35-39, Jesus wakes up early to pray, but his disciples come looking for him, saying that "everyone is looking for you." In Matthew 16:21-23,  Jesus tells his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes. Peter rebukes him, saying that this should never happen to him. Jesus responds by telling Peter that he is setting his mind on human things rather than God's things and calls him a hindrance. In Luke 14:25-33, Jesus sets the boundary of the cost of discipleship. He says anyone who wants to follow him, essentially compared to their love for Jesus, must hate their family and even their own life. They must carry their own cross, and give up all their possessions. If they're not willing to pay this price, they can't follow him. In John 2:13-17, Jesus clears the temple of the money changers and merchants, telling them to stop making his Father's house a marketplace. He shows anger and uses physical force to set this boundary. Jesus was the servant of all but did not allow anyone to trod on boundaries.  So, what if you are trodding on God's boundaries? What if your spouse wants to trod on the boundaries set by God? Sexual boundaries?  Disrespect boundaries?  Other boundaries? Should you set boundaries with yourself?  Should you set boundareis with your spouse? If so, how?  Is there a way to have a generous heart and a kind spirit and yet set a firm boundary?    This conversation goes into these things that are HARD to tease through.  I don't think I have it all right. This is a topic that I feel a bit reticent to release. And I think it will require prayer as you discern how it applies to you. There are so many people I wish I could help when I meet them at the playground, park, at a party... so here it is.    Marriage can be tough. VERY tough. And there is a dearth of helpful insight nowadays.  My content is focused towards people who follow the teachings of Jesus. But I really want to give you help because, from one perspective, we may not even be able to ask the hard philosophical questions about "is there a God?" or "what is Truth?" if we're bogged down with so much emotional pain in our marriage.   So, I tried my best in this episode to give you a roadmap at a very high level of how to rescue your relationship. Whether you follow the teachings of Jesus or not. (Yes, all my training is based on that, but I want to HELP you... so I invite you to listen in because I am very practical.)   Maybe you want to stay married because of the kids (good for you!) or you really can't afford a divorce, or you want to keep the commitment you made however many years ago, or you have the slightest bit of hope that you could get back to what you had at first or... fill in the blank.   So, how do you do that when your partner has hurt you in so many ways?   Well, in this episode, I talk about what husbands need to feel filled up in marriage, and what wives need to feel filled up in marriage.  And when you or your spouse is missing this, it is painful and "hurt people, hurt people". So your spouse reacts by hurting you too. I also talk about the very first step you must take, otherwise, your marriage won't be able to grow.  I also uproot a cliche and very harmful marital habit. EXTREMELY harmful, if you want to stay married. And most of all I want you to have hope that it can change and that it's worth you putting in the work (yet again) to see to it that your kids have a solid and safe family to grow up in. My goal today is to inspire a curious heart.  Could God have really designed men and women differently? Could your differences truly be HIS design? Could it be that "in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female he created them.” Gen 1:27   Could your husband's member be God-designed?   Could it be that sex is God-designed? Roy was married 25 years with 5 kids. And they had a good marriage. They love the Lord and seek to serve Him with all. Intimacy was tough though. And every time he brought it up, she would get defensive, or feel like she wasn't good enough, or like he'll never be satisfied. Is there dignity in humility?  Is there dignity in humiliation?  Initially, you might think not.    But then we have to take a moment to consider the cross. An excruciating death, reserved not for Roman citizens, but for rebels and slaves...  because it was SO  SO humiliating.   And yet, the God of glory, the One who DESERVES all glory and honor...  HUMILIATED Himself not only to come as a baby, giving up His power, constraining himself to human form, and giving up his rights in an infinite number of ways...   to then suffer the humiliation, the pain...  for the joy set before Him.    Not because we deserved it, ...but because it is a testament to HIS surrender to the Father's will that he endured the cross.    This is why you are humble and a servant to your spouse, ...because humility is the VERY dignity of Jesus.    Humility is what Jesus Himself modeled.    Why do you close your mouth when you want to criticize your spouse? Why do you pause instead of, "let them have it," when they deserve to be dressed down for their bad behavior? Why do you go out of your way to make them feel special, even though they haven't done it for you?  Why do you forgive them for the pain they have caused you?  Why are you joyful even though they don't add to it in the ways they know you'd love?   Because you are walking in the humility that Jesus Himself invites you to.    Every single day, in your marriage, you are invited to walk in His humility.    What does humility look like? Jesus. Was he a pushover? No. Was he passive? No. But was he an extravagant servant? Most definitely.   So, are there boundaries to humility? Yes.    I invite you to have a curious heart if God has something for you here.    I reference the book "Humility," by Andrew Murray, a lot in this episode. I also reference the Bible a lot. When I look back on my life — when I see what is currently unseen — when I see Jesus face to face — when all has been revealed… I am convinced I will be BLOWN AWAY by the love I never realized He truly had for me.  In the Bible, it says that God feeds the birds. (Mt 6:26) He FEEDS the birds.    I was observing birds yesterday in the park.  There are tons of them, flitting around, this way and that.  And yet the God of the universe cares about His creation, so much so, that He Himself feeds the birds!    He is intimately aware of your life and what you're going through.  And He is feeding you. He is clothing you. He is giving you far more than just that. He wants you to realize that in every good AND in every suffering, He remains good.  There is SO much you (and I) cannot see.  He allows suffering for His reasons only He can see. But when you trust this truth that He is the one that gives everything that is right in your life — it allows you to see the suffering better. You can endure the suffering with a peace, a joy, and a contentment that is important. In fact, when you have that peace/joy/contentment during the suffering, you will accomplish at least some of the important purposes He has for that suffering.    Make no mistake, God cares about your suffering. God cares about the rejection you feel from your spouse.  He cares about your loneliness in the one supposedly “safe relationship” – your marriage. He cares about the lack of intimacy.  He cares about the lack of warmth.  He cares when your spouse ignores the cravings of your soul that you were designed to have.  He cares.    And IN THIS He is good.   If we only knew how much He truly loved you…  He would risk you possibly turning away from him due to that suffering because He has bigger purposes.  Remember… Higher than the heavens are above the earth are His ways higher than our ways, are His thoughts higher than our thoughts.  We do NOT have to understand. We DO have to trust His goodness.  That starts with realizing, if the God of the Universe feeds each of these birds, that means he makes each of my breaths happen, each of my blood vessels moves when they are meant to.  It means He causes my son to smile at me.  It means He causes my eyes to even see the sunset.  It means that He not only knit me together in my mother's womb for 9 to 10 months… But He didn't stop. He is still in me. He is still designing, directing, causing all these things to go well in me.    EVERY good gift is from Him. Even the ones I don't take time to notice.    When my arm breaks it should remind me that He was the one that caused it to thrive every other day.  If we only soaked in the truth of His love, we could more easily trust it during the suffering… He is still good.  If we only knew His love.    If we only knew His love.    If we only knew His love.    May you know the love of Christ.  May I know it, too.   Love & Blessings, Belah   PS If you would like help with your marriage, we invite you to schedule a free Clarity Call with our advisor. With more time I can easily think of more things. I never once questioned if what I spent on MR was worth it, because without question it was."

Trust.   1 in 4 or even 1 in 3 women have been victims of sexual abuse.  1 in 6 men have.    So, many of us need the HOPE for healing Lisa gives us.  Was it instant? Was it easy to confront? Is Jesus the Lord of your life in EVERY area?  Are you trusting God in everything except your marriage?  Are you saying, "Yes, I will follow," but then when Jesus says to sacrifice for your spouse, that's where you draw the line to do it your own way? Is your emotional intimacy with your spouse in God's hands? Is your spiritual intimacy with your spouse in God's hands? Is your physical intimacy with your spouse in God's hands?   Or, have you decided (like I too often do, sadly) "God, in this area, I can do it my way"?   God is really interested in your marriage. Your spouse is the closest relationship to you. Whom you can influence the most -- and they influence you the most.   So... if you decide to do marriage your own way, that's a big deal.   I was recently reminded that when I don't TRUST God, I suffer... often, unnecessarily.    When I don't trust God, and I try to do it my own way...the work that God was in the middle of doing -- behind the scenes -- I can ROYALLY mess up!  The lesson I invite you to learn from my fumble is: TRUST God in your situation.  TRUST God in the way He set up marriage and your role (husband and wife) and witness God move in your  emotional spiritual  and  physical  intimacy.    He has a way. If you're suffering doing it His way, there is a reward on this side (or the other side) of eternity.  But, as I was reminded of, we may suffer because we are doing it OUR way. And I encourage you to make sure you're doing it His way.  IMPORTANT: Make sure you ARE doing your marriage and intimacy God's way, so you and your wife don't unnecessarily suffer. From a past of pain and hurt Reed realized he needed healing. His first wife left him after twenty years. He then found out that she had had several extramarital affairs.  Completely devastating. Alternate Title: 7 Steps to a Productive Disagreement -- Arguing. Ugh. It's so... so... unhelpful. When have you left an argument where the dust has settled and you felt 100% good with everything you said -- your eyes, your words, your tones...? Everything.  In fact, how would you feel if your church congregation watched what you said and did?  Would you be proud of yourself?  Would you feel small and immature? Usually, after an argument, I only feel the latter.   To clarify, what I mean by arguing is having elevated emotions when we start using a stronger voice and intense words.  Essentially, the judging/reasoning/impulse-control part of our brains (pre-frontal cortex) goes offline during that stressful conversation and we're left with the "lizard brain" which only knows how to flight, fight, or freeze. All the wisdom that we have cultivated throughout all of our lives and have prayed for and read about, goes out of the window during an argument.  We say things we don't mean and throw verbal knives at each other.  Sure, we might apologize for it the next day when we're calm, but those words leave scars.    So, can we ever disagree?  Yes.  We need to disagree. That's healthy and correct.    We need to be courageous and disagree about things that matter.    But we need to do it the Jesus way.    I have some very practical tips on how to disagree well, and how to honor God in it.    It's easy to use "popular thinking" and just say what you think. But the Bible is clear that's not best.  "We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check... The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one's life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell." When I look back on my life -- when I see what is currently unseen -- when I see Jesus face to face -- when all has been revealed... I am convinced I will be BLOWN AWAY by the love I never realized He truly had for me.  In the Bible, it says that God feeds the birds. (Mt 6:26) He FEEDS the birds.    I was observing birds yesterday in the park.  There are tons of them, flitting around, this way and that.  And yet the God of the universe cares about His creation, so much so, that He Himself feeds the birds!    He is intimately aware of your life and what you're going through.  And He is feeding you. He is clothing you. He is giving you far more than just that. He wants you to realize that in every good AND in every suffering, He remains good.  There is SO much you (and I) cannot see.  He allows suffering for His reasons only He can see. But when you trust this truth that He is the one that gives everything that is right in your life -- it allows you to see the suffering better. You can endure the suffering with a peace, a joy, and a contentment that is important. In fact, when you have that peace/joy/contentment during the suffering, you will accomplish at least some of the important purposes He has for that suffering.    Make no mistake, God cares about your suffering. God cares about the rejection you feel from your spouse.  He cares about your loneliness in the one supposedly "safe relationship" - your marriage. He cares about the lack of intimacy.  He cares about the lack of warmth.  He cares when your spouse ignores the cravings of your soul that you were designed to have.  He cares.    And IN THIS He is good.   If we only knew how much He truly loved you...  He would risk you possibly turning away from him due to that suffering because He has bigger purposes.  Remember... Higher than the heavens are above the earth are His ways higher than our ways, are His thoughts higher than our thoughts.  We do NOT have to understand. We DO have to trust His goodness.  That starts with realizing, if the God of the Universe feeds each of these birds, that means he makes each of my breaths happen, each of my blood vessels moves when they are meant to.  It means He causes my son to smile at me.  It means He causes my eyes to even see the sunset.  It means that He not only knit me together in my mother's womb for 9 to 10 months... But He didn't stop. He is still in me. He is still designing, directing, causing all these things to go well in me.    EVERY good gift is from Him. Even the ones I don't take time to notice.    When my arm breaks it should remind me that He was the one that caused it to thrive every other day.  If we only soaked in the truth of His love, we could more easily trust it during the suffering... He is still good.  If we only knew His love.    If we only knew His love.    If we only knew His love.    May you know the love of Christ.  May I know it, too.   Love & Blessings, Belah

The Most High wants us to see all 4 corners of the earth. This world is too big to not see it. We have to get out of our comfort zone and expand. We have to stretch and live a life full of risks. Love & Blessings. Peace.

SO much packed in here, but I tried to narrow it down so you have a helpful summary. We go deep in this episode, I really think it'll help you. Three points are made in this episode: 1 - Your feelings are God given and He wants to do something because of them. 2 - It is healthy and even Jesus-like to express your frustration emotions (without hurting anyone) and grieve through your sad emotions (tears are important). 3 - Regardless of your lot in life, it is your responsibility (not your family of origin, perhaps you didn't have a good role model, maybe you were exposed to porn, or your wife doesn't have wholehearted sex with you every other day...) to correctly follow God with your emotions.    A lot of men learned to deal with frustration through masturbation and/or pornography. It was a very tactical way to get frustration out of their body.  However, that stunted the opportunity to get frustration out in a healthy way, so that their brains could develop in the way God wanted it to -- with empathy, gentleness, and kindness.  So, they came into marriage assuming they'd be able to replace their "frustration valve" of pornography with their wife's body.  And surprise... they're still frustrated.  Because that's not Jesus' way.  They may struggle now with anger, aggression, bitterness, resentment, being judgmental... Sex addiction, still... Alcoholism, video game addiction, binge-watching nonsense... Longing for your past sexual escapades... Daydreaming about divorce so you could get a new partner... Other similar things are unhealthy ways of expelling the frustration. (Things that, if it was printed on the front page of a newspaper, you would be ashamed of.)    I want you to know -- I am proud of you for even reading this email -- and if you're in any of these loops -- I think God is proud of you for facing it! Bravo! Listen, this is not just for men, but I hope this will help you process what's going on with you a bit more.   Feelings are good. They're God given. They tell us something. It may be that WE need to process, mature, slow-down, feel grief, etc. so we can feel empathy... This is why when he was searching for podcasts on intimacy, he stumbled on DYM and became an avid listener.   Well, I am happy to say that after 3 months of, only him doing the work, in fact, she didn't know! He said she had no interest in changing, working on the relationship or certainly not discussing sex... but God has done some awesome things! I want you to listen today because it's when we hear stories that God puts hope in us to a greater degree (I think) than just direct teaching. It's really through stories that we hear someone's heart and we hear what God has done in them and in their marriages. If you're struggling... I want you to resist the temptation towards jealousy. A message of gratitude from Ujamaa Place CEO Otis Zanders, Welcome to our Virtual Celebration & Awards 2021.  Wow! Can you believe we're just days away from the start of a new year. I don't know about you, but it has me excited about new opportunities for learning, understanding, growing, and most importantly loving. Challenges were abundant in 2021, but the strides we made were greater.  Bear with me while I reflect on how far we've come… I, for one, experienced some personal health challenges in 2021. While I was out on medical leave, the staff at Ujamaa Place was forced to step up and fulfill my responsibilities in addition to their own work, which was already made more difficult by the pandemic. They rose to the occasion beyond what would have been expected of anyone in these circumstances, and I am forever grateful to them for it. This experience made us stronger as an organization, and we are eager to take the lessons and understanding gained in 2021 into 2022 and broaden our unconditional love and support of the most marginalized population in society, African American men, aged 18-30. This year was not without sadness.  We lost a Ujamaa brother and member of our Ujamaa Music Group, Justin Langeslay aka “Ju$$ Lyfe,” who is remembered as kind, loving, respectful and full of life. I just want to express my gratitude for you! THANK YOU for supporting Ujamaa Place over the years. We know none of this would be possible without the bold support of our community. Knowing that the community is supporting and cheering them on goes a long way for the Ujamaa Men on their transformation journey. So, this is such a fun story to share. I believe it will inspire hope, excitement and most importantly faith that God can do this for you too! I remember speaking with Timothy on our first call together and the sincere pain and loneliness he felt with his wife which was so visceral and real.  He reached out firstly just to thank me for an encouraging podcast that he stumbled upon after a really tough moment between he and his wife and it encouraged him. My heart went out to him. A big part of him thought the state of his marriage was "just the way it was". How could a class fix that?    Timothy shares what happened to him when he got the tools and training of Masculinity Reclaimed. What happened to his marriage when he implemented it.  What changes he made. Week in and week out he "showed up" and did what I asked -- and what I think you can tell by listening to his story is that he changed.  She didn't know he was doing the program, but she started responding to his change. This week on Purpose By Design we welcome Vicki Meyerding. Vicki and her husband, Case are traveling ministers. They work deeply in the Native Nations (First Nations) throughout the United States. Vicki and her family presently reside in Roseville, Minnesota. Vicki and Casey bring truckloads of donations into areas that are hit hard by floods or other disasters. This gives them the ability to develop relationships with people while being an example of faith and love. Vicki is passionate about helping people become the best version of themselves. Vicki ended up on the strip circuit in desperation to make money. Vicki explains how she understands being controlled, living in fear and feeling enslaved with no way out (14:10). Vicki shares how she finally was able to escape from that lifestyle. (16:00) It all began when Vicki went to an audition. Which ended up being a church production. Where for the first time Vicki said she experienced "Real Love". Her life began to change and Vicki began discovering her Purpose ! (11:25) Raymell was a young man beginning to fill with aggression and anger. Instead of acting on the aggression and anger he turned inward and upward. Which he says changed the Landscape of his Life forever. Instead of just experiencing hard times, he would see the other side. Letting the lessons become blessings instead. Raymell says he chose to stand on his life instead of his life standing on him. In that way, his story could help others. When I asked Raymell his insight about the condition of our Nation right now. His words were profound. " 2020 vision is accurate. We have it now. What we have been to busy to see we now have no choice but to see. Now as a nation we are in a place of transformation ".
