In episode 397 of the Real Life Runners Podcast, we focused on the often overlooked component for improved running performance and injury prevention: the nervous system. While many runners emphasize training plans, mileage, strength training, nutrition, and paces, the regulation of the nervous system is crucial for optimal results. We delve into the autonomic nervous system, explaining the roles of the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) systems. Signs of nervous system dysregulation, such as constant fatigue, trouble sleeping, and frequent injuries, are discussed. We explore the methods for better nervous system regulation, including proper training plans, HRV monitoring, recovery techniques, and lifestyle adjustments like adequate sleep and nutrition. The episode underscores the importance of balancing stress and recovery to enhance running performance and overall well-being.02:26 The Importance of the Nervous System in Running03:20 Understanding the Autonomic Nervous System04:12 Balancing the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Systems08:45 Signs of Nervous System Dysregulation12:44 Regulating Your Nervous System for Better Performance16:09 Using HRV to Monitor Nervous System Health23:03 Building a Stronger Parasympathetic Response25:24 Lifestyle Factors for Nervous System Health  Thanks for Listening!!Be sure to hit FOLLOW on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast player Leave a review on Apple Podcasts. One in four American women suffer from some kind of pelvic floor disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health. That's 25% of us! And yes, that number goes up as we get older. And running can trigger accidents and make it worse. And this is not just a female phenomenon. Men have a pelvic floor too and can also have issues. Most guys certainly aren't talking about it! Some people are so ashamed, embarrassed, and downright fearful of leaking that they choose to quit running all together.  I'm here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that way. I've brought on pelvic floor specialist and international coach, Baz Moffat. You'll learn: Why pelvic floor issues happen and increase as we age and especially when we run, What the signs are of a more serious problem and, most importantly, The surprising ways to strengthen the muscles to prevent leaks and incontinence in the first place (and it's not kegels!) Baz is a former member of the rowing team for Great Britain and she is a prominent voice in the women's health movement. She is a co-founder of the Well HQ whose mission is to challenge the status quo for women in health, fitness and sport. This is a powerful conversation for anyone who has a pelvis and unless you are like Baz and study this for a living, I promise you will learn something brand new that you can apply today. The other thing I want to say is that this topic doesn't have to be all doom and gloom! Baz has several great tips on making pelvic health more normalized and dare I say it, even fun. Today's episode is a re-release of a conversation I had just over 2 years ago, a few weeks after completing the London marathon for the very first time. I have decided to re-release it because I am seeing so much online about people being injured, struggling with their running, their walking or their sport. I believe that this conversation - and my wonderful guest - can help.My guest is my dear friend, Helen Hall. Helen is a movement therapist, she's a running coach, a pain expert…in fact, to be frank, all of these labels feel a little bit limiting - in many ways, I would call her a detective for the human body.Helen has had a lifelong passion for analysing posture and movement, and her clients include elite athletes as well as regular everyday folk who simply want to walk or run pain-free. She combines objective clarity from motion analysis technology, 46 years of visual experience, and study in the field, to seek out the root causes of chronic pain and injury that often seem resistant to standard treatment protocols. Helen first shared her movement philosophy in her wonderful book Even With Your Shoes On. More recently, she has launched an online course called PFM Pilot. It is aimed at both professionals working in the field of movement, pain, and injury, and also for amateurs keen to learn more and help themselves. We look at the core principles of Helen's approach. Awareness is everything and she teaches clients to really notice what their body is doing. Where is your head sitting? How are you using your arms? It's only when you've noticed that you can begin to change. And changing means becoming more efficient – learning the adjustments that help you to move with freedom. Movement, Helen points out, is a ‘job share'. We need to be able to recruit as much of our bodies as we can to do it well.I can testify to this holistic approach. Working with Helen hasn't just changed my running, it's helped me to walk faster, breathe better and stand more comfortably. It's made me aware of how past injuries and trauma can affect you for decades. I've even learned how the surgery I had for appendicitis as a child played a huge part in my experience running the London Marathon. And, this conversation is my first real deep dive into my marathon experience. It wasn't the race I'd planned, but it turned out to be the race I needed. Helen helps me unpack why I found it so emotional and explains why my physical struggles were a sign of progress not limitation. I hope this conversation conveys just how valuable I think Helen's approach is. Whether running is for you or not, I know it'll get you thinking about how you're sitting or standing right now, and noticing how you use your body for the rest of the day. Thanks to our sponsors:https://www.vivobarefoot.com/livemorehttps://drinkag1.com/livemoreShow notes https://drchatterjee.com/391DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. The Best Way to Train Your Pelvic Muscles for Worry-Free Running: Baz Moffat

Be sure to stay tuned all the way to the end of the episode for the Mental Strength Minute to fortify your mind in 60 seconds or less.
