When InStyle's cover for “The Confidence Issue” came out, I tore through Mattie Kahn's cover profile on Sharon Stone. Listeners, this is a fantastic article, but when it comes to Mattie Kahn's writing, that's just what one comes to expect when it comes to her. Mattie is one of the most published writers today, and after working full-time at outlets like Elle and Glamour, she's now a full-time freelance writer and has written for literally every publication you can dream of: Vogue, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveler, Time, The Atlantic, Town & Country, New York Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Seventeen, I could go on and on. Today Mattie and I talk about the secrets to a good celebrity interview, what she wishes she knew before going freelance, how telling stories of powerful women and girls is a running theme throughout her work, and about her first book, Young and Restless: The Girls Who Sparked America's Revolutions, which came out in June 2023. The book is about teenage girls involved in activist work and, as the book description reads, is “the untold story of the people who have helped spark America's most transformative social movements throughout history: teenage girls.” Mattie is a Harvard graduate and, in addition to all of the publications she writes for and her book, she also has a Substack called “Things I Ask My Mother.” Mattie Kahn is very deservedly one of my Women in Power. By Mattie Kahn: Young and Restless: The Girls Who Sparked America's Revolutions “Sharon Stone Has Found Her Limit” for InStyle “Things I Ask My Mother” Substack + another day of extra picks by female authors! In this episode of Personally Speaking, Msgr. Jim Lisante is joined by the Award winning journalist and author Luke Russert. Luke worked for NBC News as a broadcast correspondent from 2008 – 2016. He is the son of news legend Tim Russert and Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth. In 2016, Luke went on a global journey, spanning 67 countries for more than three years. In his recently released book, “Look For Me There: Grieving My Father, Finding Myself”, Luke talks about his deeply personal journey, why he decided to step away from journalism, his faith, and living with the loss of a loved one.Support the show
“Look for me there,” news legend Tim Russert would tell his son, Luke, when confirming a pickup spot at an airport, sporting event, or rock concert. After Tim died unexpectedly, Luke kept looking for his father, following in Tim's footsteps and carving out a highly successful career at NBC News. After eight years covering politics on television, Luke realized he had no good answer as to why he was chasing his father's legacy. As the son of two accomplished parents—his mother is journalist Maureen Orth of Vanity Fair—Luke felt the pressure of high expectations but suddenly decided to leave the familiar path behind. Instead, Luke set out on his own to find answers. What began as several open-ended months of travel to decompress and reassess morphed into a three-plus-year odyssey across six continents to discover the world and, ultimately, to find himself. Look for Me There is both the vivid narrative of that journey and the emotional story of a young man taking charge of his life, reexamining his relationship with his parents, and finally grieving his larger-than-life father, who died too young. For anyone uncertain about the direction of their life or unsure of how to move forward after a loss, Look for Me There is a poignant reflection that offers encouragement to examine our choices, take risks, and discover our truest selves. Luke Orth Russert is an Emmy Award–winning journalist who was an NBC News correspondent from 2008 to 2016, primarily covering American politics. Since leaving broadcast journalism, he is the author of Look for Me There, a travel memoir about his three-and-a-half-year journey around the world that took him to more than sixty-five countries. Based in Washington, DC, he is the son of journalists Maureen Orth (Vanity Fair) and the late Tim Russert (NBC's Meet the Press).
Surprise! Only for Luke Russert would I come back from hiatus -- and what a great chat this was. Luke's book is a New York Times bestseller, and for good reason. It unpacks the grief he felt over losing his father, Tim Russert, at such a young age; traveling the world in search of himself; his relationship with his mother Maureen Orth, also an iconic journalist; nepotism in the workplace; and so much more. This will be our last episode for a while, so I hope you enjoy it -- and pick up this book. You'll love it. Look for Me There: Grieving My Father, Finding Myself by Luke Russert

In this episode I speak with Luke Russert, author of, "Look For Me There: Grieving My Father, Finding Myself," an exploration of finding oneself and one's place in the world in the face of crushing expectations and grief. He is an author and an Emmy Award winning journalist who served as an NBC News correspondent from 2008 to 2016. Primarily covering American politics, he was seen on popular outlets such as NBC Nightly News, Today, NBCNews.com, and MSNBC. He is the son of the late Tim Russert of NBC's Meet the Press and Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth. His wakeup call was prompted by a talk with House Speaker John Boehner who advised him to get out of the suffocating political bubble in Washington, D.C. to find out who he was and wanted to be. https://www.lukerussert.net/

Then, we get into the investigation & arrest (48:08), "Where are they now?" followed by our takeaways and what we think made the perp snap (52). The media often likes to post unproven generalities as "Facts", and they do it A LOT now that Michael Jackson has passed away... One popular article in particular, comes from Vanity Fair's Maureen Orth. I wanted to get to the bottom of these "Undeniable Facts" as she called them. The first couple were addressed in Part 2 of this interview, but I wanted to get to the rest of them with Michael Jackson's eldest nephew: Taj Jackson. If you missed Part one of our interview with Taj , you can see it here: https://youtu.be/G0Bc3WPcxwM or wherever you listen to this podcast. Hello for the third time in 8 days. This week we're covering the full gamut of topics: Why the monarchy will miss Meghan and Harry; a perfect essay on fame and sexism by Lena Dunham; the catch-22 'likability trap' that stunts all women's success and a final deliberation on Back With The Ex. Plus, Harvey Weinstein is going to prison but Roman Polanski is winning French Oscars and Woody Allen would be writing a multi-million dollar memoir (if not stopped by the efforts of his estranged son, Ronan Farrow). Why, oh why, are we still having to deal with these two - given everything we know about their treatment of children? And is Woody Allen's cancelled book deal a victory for #MeToo or censorship, as Hadley Freeman suggested in a column in The Guardian? Then we inevitably lose our minds about how depressing everything is and need to google pictures of Zendaya and her cute boyfriend to calm us. Enjoy
Bruce Springsteen was a local favorite and a darling of the critics, but that sort of thing doesn't cut any ice when you're Columbia Records and your artist has already released two albums without scoring any hits. But Springsteen had an epiphany about what his next album should sound like, from both a lyrical and a sonic sense, and it was the start of his reputation as a serious perfectionist when it came to his recordings. The result was the album Born to Run, and its title track, which were both released on the same day: August 25, 1975. The album went to Number 3 and just a couple of weeks later, Springsteen made a kind of history by being the first rock star to land on the cover of both Time and Newsweek Magazines during the same week, on October 27. According to biographer Peter Ames Carlin, that wasn't a coincidence: Jay Cocks of Time found out that Maureen Orth of Newsweek was doing a piece about Springsteen and convinced his editor to run a piece as well. Time's piece was all about his music, though, while Newsweek concentrated on the publicity machine that put someone like Springsteen on the map. I, being only 12 years old at the time, remember seeing the covers but didn't read either magazine because we didn't have a subscription. But a pretty big deal was made about it in the newspapers and on TV at the time, so I have a memory of that too. And as promised, here's the video of the Springsteen pastiche that appeared on Sesame Street: Next week's show was inspired by a suggestion from a listener. In the meantime, have fun with this week's show: Click here for a transcript of this episode. Click here to become a Patron of the show.
At the height of her fame in 1943, movie star Gene Tierney contracted German measles during pregnancy and bore a daughter with severe birth defects. The strain ended her marriage to Oleg Cassini and sent her into a breakdown that lasted years. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Tierney's years of heartbreak and the revelation that compounded them. We'll also visit some Japanese cats and puzzle over a disarranged corpse. Intro: The indexes of two mathematics textbooks contain hidden jokes. Choreographer Sam Pinkleton is back in time for The Stacks Book Club to take on true crime, with Vulgar Favors: The Assassination of Gianni Versace by Maureen Orth. Vulgar Favors examines the serial killer Andrew Cunanan, who murdered 5 men in 1997 culminating in the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace. We discuss Cunanan and his victims, but mostly we focus on the tone of the book. We examine the term "gay crime" and why we find this and so much of the book to be problematic. While there are spoilers in this episode, this book covers a real life event, which means all of the information is out in the public. You can listen without ruining the book. Discussed this week: "The Killers Train" (Maureen Orth, Vanity Fair) Outrage: The Five Reasons Why O. J. Simpson Got Away with Murder by Vincent Bugliosi The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, Season 2 (FX) American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder, and Survival by Deborah Hall New Boy by Tracy Chevalier Connect with The Stacks: iTunes| Website| Instagram| Facebook | Twitter | Goodreads |Traci's Instagram Connect with Sam: Instagram | Twitter Thank you to this week's sponsor Audible. The Flash (season 4 on CW)At 11, Barry Allen's life changed completely when his mother died in a freak accident and his innocent father was convicted of her murder. Now a crime-scene investigator, his dedication to learn the truth about his mother's death drives him to follow up on every new scientific advancement and urban legend. When his latest obsession -- a particle accelerator heralded as a world-changing invention -- causes an explosion, it creates a freak storm and Barry is struck by lightning. He awakes from a coma nine months later with the power of superspeed. When he learns that others who have gained powers use them for evil, he dedicates himself to protecting the innocent, while still trying to solve the older mystery. Black Lightning (season 1 on CW)CW and Greg Berlanti expand the footprint of their DC Comics universe with this exploration of the intersection between family life and being a superhero. As a younger man, Jefferson Pierce donned the suit of a vigilante and protected the streets of his city, but he believed he'd left those days in the past. He learns that life doesn't always work out as planned when his daughter, Jennifer -- a star student who is determined to achieve justice at any cost -- gets recruited by a street gang. In order to protect his family, Jefferson sees no choice but to once again become Black Lightning. The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (season 2 on FX)The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is the second season of the FX true crime anthology television series American Crime Story. The season premiered on January 17, 2018, and will consist of a total of 9 episodes.[3] It explores the murder of designer Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, based on Maureen Orth's book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History. Grey’s Anatomy (season 14 on ABC)The medical drama series focuses on a group of doctors at a hospital in Seattle, including several who began their careers at the facility as interns. One of the doctors and the show's namesake, Meredith Grey, is the daughter of a famous surgeon. She struggles to maintain relationships with her colleagues, particularly the hospital's one-time chief of surgery, Richard Webber, due to a pre-existing relationship between them -- Webber and Meredith's mother had a personal relationship when Meredith was young. Scandal (final season on ABC)"Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes is the creative mind behind this ABC drama. Olivia Pope, a former media consultant to the president, is ready to move on with her life and opens her own crisis-management firm, but she can't seem to shake ties with her past. Olivia's staff includes Quinn Perkins, who has a complicated history, and hacker extraordinaire Huck. As she moves forward it becomes clear that, while her staffers may specialize in cleaning up the lives of other people, they can't seem to do the same for themselves. High Maintenance (season 2 on HBO)Exploring the private lives of dozens of New Yorkers that have one connection, their weed dealer. Counterpart (season 1 on Starz)What might be different if a person could co-exist in an alternate world? Howard Silk, a low-level agent whose career is winding down at a Berlin-based United Nations spy agency, unwittingly learns the answer. Upon discovering his organization is harboring a secret, that of a gateway to a parallel dimension, Howard becomes immersed in a mysterious world of espionage, intrigue, and government conspiracies. There, the only man Howard can trust is Prime, his almost identical counterpart from a divergent reality. Baskets (season 3 on FX)Chip Baskets has always dreamed of being a classically trained clown. After flunking out of French clown college -- probably due to his inability to understand French -- he returns home to Bakersfield, California, where he moves in with his mother, Christine, bickers with his twin brother, Dale, longs for his sophisticated Parisian ex-wife, and continues to pursue his professional clowning dream, with the assistance of his friend/assistant/insurance adjuster, Martha. Zach Galifianakis stars as both Chip and Dale, with Louie Anderson as Christine and Martha Kelly in the role of Martha. Another Period (season 3 on Comedy Central)Before others staked a claim, there was one American family who stood for all that was spoiled, shameless and stupid. It's the Bellacourts, and as Rhode Island's first family of the Gilded Age, the insanely ridiculous, debaucherous clan have more servants than relatives, and days are filled with money, sex, drugs and more money. With nothing of substance to offer their fellow citizens, the Bellacourts are solely concerned with how they look, what parties they attend, and -- in the case of sisters Lillian and Beatrice, especially -- becoming super famous. Co-executive producers Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome star as Lillian and Beatrice, respectively. Waco (miniseries on Paramount Network, formerly called Spike)In February 1993, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raids David Koresh's Branch Davidian compound, a small religious community located just outside of Waco, Texas, triggering a drawn-out gun battle that kills four ATF agents and six civilians and wounds dozens more people. After a 51-day standoff, the conflict ends when an FBI assault leads to a fire that engulfs the compound, killing 76 Branch Davidians, including Koresh. Told from the perspectives of those who were there, including chief FBI negotiator Gary Noesner and survivor David Thibodeau, the six-part scripted series "Waco" dramatizes one of the most misunderstood stories in American history. Altered Carbon (season 1 on Netflix)More than 300 years in the future, society has been transformed by new technology, leading to human bodies being interchangeable and death no longer being permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the only surviving soldier of a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned for centuries until impossibly wealthy businessman Laurens Bancroft offers him the chance to live again. Kovacs will have to do something for Bancroft, though, if he wants to be resurrected. Bancroft's request of Kovacs is to solve a murder -- Bancroft's. "Altered Carbon" is based on Richard K. Morgan's cyberpunk noir novel of the same name. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Maureen Orth’s 1999 book, Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History, is now the backdrop of FX’s nine-part series, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”. But while the TV show may shine the spotlight on Versace, Orth’s book dug deeper into the complex mind of Cunanan -- why he killed, how he hid in plain sight and why he targeted Versace.
