Enjoy this stained glass panel discussion with top industry professionals and educators Judith Schaechter, Stephen Hartley, Megan McElfresh, and Amy Valuck. Topics addressed include: what is needed in stained glass education; how the massive number of Instagrammers making suncatchers and trinkets affect stained glass; how to promote stained glass in a gallery setting; and how to stay relevant as stained glass artists. The panelists: By single-handedly revolutionizing the craft of stained glass through her unique aesthetic and inventive approach to materials, Judith Schaechter championed her medium into the world of fine art. The content of her work – some of which gives voice to those who experience pain, grief, despair, and hopelessness – resonates with viewers, leaving a profound and lasting impression. Schaechter has lived and worked in Philadelphia since graduating in 1983 with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design Glass Program. She has exhibited her glass art widely, including in New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, The Hague and Vaxjo, Sweden. She is the recipient of many grants, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in Crafts, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, The Joan Mitchell Award, two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts awards, The Pew Fellowship in the Arts and a Leeway Foundation grant. Her work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Hermitage in Russia, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Corning Museum of Glass, The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution and numerous other public and private collections. Schaechter's work was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial, a collateral exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2012, and she is a 2008 USA Artists Rockefeller Fellow. In 2013 the artist was inducted to the American Craft Council College of Fellows. The Glass Art Society presented Schaechter with a Lifetime Achievement award in 2023, and this year she will receive the Smithsonian Visionary Award. Schaechter has taught workshops at numerous venues, including the Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, the Penland School of Crafts, Toyama Institute of Glass (Toyama, Japan), Australia National University in Canberra, Australia. She has taught courses at Rhode Island School of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the New York Academy of Art. She is ranked as an Adjunct Professor at The University of the Arts and Tyler School of Art Glass Program, both in Philly . Born in Philadelphia, Stephen Hartley began his craft career working on a variety of historic buildings and monuments throughout the region. In 1999, he moved to South Carolina to attend Coastal Carolina University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in History. He then relocated to Savannah, Georgia, and continued to work in the traditional crafts and conservation fields while attending graduate school. After completing his MFA in Historic Preservation at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Hartley was employed as an instructor at various colleges within the Savannah area. He earned his PhD from the University of York in 2018 where his dissertation thesis studied the historical and modern frameworks of trades training in the US and the UK.  Hartley eventually returned to the Philadelphia area and accepted the position of Head of Building Arts at Bryn Athyn College, where he formulated the first Bachelor's of Fine Arts (BFA) in traditional building within the United States. Hartley, currently an associate professor in Notre Dame's School of Architecture, wants his students to have a deeper appreciation for the work craftspeople do to fulfill an architect's vision—by learning the vocabulary of the trades, understanding their history, and, when possible, trying out the tools. Executive Director of the Stained Glass Association of America (SGAA), Megan McElfresh has dedicated her professional life to community service and the art and science of stained glass. With a background in fine arts and operations management, she joined the Association as a professional member in 2015 and became the Executive Director in the fall of 2017. Growing up in small stained glass studios, McElfresh continued to build on her technical skills in the medium by seeking mentorship opportunities throughout college. Some of the highlights of her glass studies were traveling to Pilchuck Glass School and time spent at the nationally recognized kiln forming resource center, Vitrum Studio.  Prior to working with the SGAA, McElfresh worked in a variety of roles from operations management at a life sciences firm in Washington, D.C. to IT and web support for small non-profit art organizations. In 2011, McElfresh moved from Northern Virginia to Buffalo, New York, and founded her studio, McElf GlassWorks. With a passion for her professional career as well as her new community, she never turned down an opportunity to collaborate with neighborhood teens and local programs to provide enthusiastic and creative educational enrichment. In her personal work, McElfresh uses her artwork in the advocacy of issues she became passionate about during her time working at a forensics laboratory concerning subjects like domestic violence and rape, and DNA backlogs. Her studio work has been featured in the Stained Glass Quarterly, Design NY, The Buffalo News, and Buffalo Rising. Find out more about the SGAA's 2024 conference here: Conference 2024: Sand to Sash | The Stained Glass Association of America Amy Valuck is a stained glass artist and conservator based in Southeastern Pennsylvania, and the current president of the American Glass Guild. She began her apprenticeship in 1998 at The Art of Glass in Media, PA, and in 2014 went on to establish her own studio, Amy Valuck Glass Art, now located in West Chester, PA. Her studio's primary work is the restoration and conservation of historical windows from churches, universities, and private residences. As a conservator she specializes in complex lead work, plated windows, and replication painting. Valuck also maintains a personal art practice, producing autonomous stained glass panels for private commissions and public exhibition, including the AGG's American Glass Now annual exhibit. Her personal work is heavily influenced by the fabrication and painting techniques of historical windows but frequently includes experimental fused glass elements.  Valuck is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, who earned her BFA degree in jewelry and light metals. Her work in jewelry earned awards including the first annual Cartier Prize, and the MJSA (Manufacturing Jewelers and Silversmiths' Association) Award. She has served on the board of directors of the American Glass Guild since 2017 and has participated as a lecturer and instructor at several of the AGG's annual conferences. Registration is now open for the 2024 Grand Rapids conference, July 9 – 14. The stained glass community will gather in a confluence of energy, inspiration and excitement for Forging New Paths: The Stained Glass Association of America's 2023 Conference, held at The Hyatt Regency in downtown Buffalo, New York, from Thursday, September 28 through Sunday, October 1, 2023. In addition to 25 workshops, five tours, auctions, art salons, art openings, the Vendor Showcase, the Mosaic Marathon, and major networking events – SGAA will hold its General Session. For more information, check out SGAA's website for speakers, a full schedule of events, and more about individual facets of every part of the event on the organization's conference homepage.  General Session Each year during General Session, SGAA brings together speakers from around the world to speak about restoration, conservation, public art, history, and technology in the field. It is not uncommon to have roundtables to tackle emerging issues or panels of experts to provide clarity on how industry elements are being tackled across the country. Speakers and lecturers are chosen by a panel of peers for both their content and enthusiasm. The expertise of historians, conservators, and contemporary practitioners come together in a unique way to celebrate the enormous diversity of the entire industry. In recent years, additional efforts have been made to bring notable guests and speakers to the conferences that can speak to the partnerships glass work often requires, e.g. those in adaptive reuse, metalsmithing, masonry conservation, sacred places, fundraising, and public art. There has also been a great many collaborations within the larger glass arts community as it applies to architectural art glass – kilnforming, flameworking, lamination, etc – and it is always exciting to see how connections made at the annual conference push the boundaries of new work. Classes & Workshops Conferences offer a unique opportunity to learn both beginning and advanced techniques and are often geared toward the unique strengths of that year's conference host. SGAA tailored its workshops to nearby facilities and studio resources that are unique to this year's conference location. Says McElfresh: “We have been very fortunate to work with incredible teachers from all over the globe – leaders in the field who have generously donated time to share their knowledge with our members and attendees.” Mosaic Marathon The Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) is the largest nonprofit mosaic art organization in the world—a vibrant and ever-expanding group of more than 1,200 members, including mosaic artists at all levels, mosaic aficionados, collectors, materials suppliers, and art educators. SAMA has placed renewed emphasis on strengthening ties with other mosaic organizations around the globe to pursue common goals. The Mosaic Marathon brings together members for a unique opportunity to create a mosaic in a cooperative, continuous, networking experience. The Mosaic Marathon creates a lasting piece of art that is donated to a local charity in SGAA's host conference city. As a not-for-profit organization, this is an opportunity for SAMA to give back to the arts community and create a lasting reminder of its legacy and mission. Tours & Field Sessions The history and appreciation of stained glass is inseparable from both its setting as an architectural element and the very nature of the material itself. For craftsmen and artists in the field to gain exposure to the vast living museums of stained glass, they must visit stained glass all over the world whenever they can. “Installations all over the world are our museums, our laboratories, and our classrooms,” says McElfresh. “Thus, when we come together as a group, we must take advantage of our travel and our companions to go and experience installations, to discuss them with our peers, and to investigate ongoing care and restoration concerns that affect us all. This is one of the most useful ways we can learn as a group.”  Nearly every SGAA conference includes at least one full day of site visits and installation tours. In addition, the organization has been known to schedule and participate in special travel opportunities both in the United States and abroad to experience as much stained glass as possible. The tours are almost always stand-alone events, which can be attended outside of General Session participation and are often open to the public. Auction & Scholarships At each conference, members have the opportunity to browse through tables laden with books, sample sets, vendor products, tools, and artwork from members. SGAA's annual silent and live auction at the summer conference is a major source of funding for scholarship assistance. Donations directly fund scholarships for professional stained glass instruction all over the country and beyond.  On exhibition years, work is donated to SGAA's live auction, which is an opportunity to collect autonomous work by any number of the group's talented members. On the Shoulders of Giants: Innovation in Stained Glass at The Buffalo History Museum, Portico Gallery, September 15, 2023 – January 14, 2024 This anniversary exhibition pays homage to skills honed over generations that have facilitated innovation in past and present-day Buffalo. Just as LaFarge and Tiffany pushed the boundaries of the medium in the 1880s, today's community continues to move forward, fostering innovation and creativity. This trifecta of exhibits brings together Buffalo's unique history and legacy with future architectural endeavors. Conference attendees have the opportunity to experience how glass is a part of the city's built environment, building momentum for the art of the future. Viewing opportunities include: The new Gundlach building at Buffalo AKG Art Museum and multiple new glass-related commissions being unveiled there this summer; Brilliance: The Stanford Lipsey Art Glass Collection at the Burchfield Penney Art Center; and On the Shoulders of Giants at the Buffalo History Museum. States David Judson, Judson Studios: “The world of stained glass is constantly evolving with the advancements in technology. Despite being an ancient craft, new and innovative methods are being discovered every day. These advancements present exciting opportunities for the future of this beautiful medium. We are thrilled to witness the endless possibilities that lie ahead.”  Camaraderie, Networking & Celebration Says McElfresh: “Year after year, SGAA builds on the shoulders of giants, sharing cumulative knowledge with one another. This magic is the result of providing space for the unplanned to occur: the intermingling of artist, craftsmen, business people and suppliers. They exchange ideas, have impromptu demonstrations, and socialize. It is the chemistry created by our shared passion for the glass material that keeps bringing us back together.” She continues: “At our business meetings, we not only attend to the business of the day, we recognize those who have achieved professional recognition in the field. We seek to learn what challenges may face us next. We are just as eager to hear from emerging professionals as we are to hear from the recognized experts.” Each annual conference ends with an award banquet where SGAA celebrates Lifetime Achievements as well as up-and-coming voices.  The Stained Glass Association of America is one of our nation's oldest trade associations. Now 120 years old, the organization is proud to produce one of the oldest continuously published art journals in the United States, in addition to providing over 1,500 professionals across the country including manufacturers, suppliers, and educators with programs, scholarships, accreditation, public education and services for stewards.  Says McElfresh: “SGAA is the advocate and ambassador for monumental stained glass art in the United States.”

Minnesota THC beverage company co-founder sees Black ownership in the marijuana business as social justice issue

Many places you go these days, liquor stores, co-ops and even convenience stores, you see them: colorful cans of CBD and THC drinks, recently legal to sell and consume in Minnesota.  And when happy hour comes around, I often finding myself reaching for one of them instead of a glass of wine. Unlike with alcohol, there's no hangover, I sleep better and feel great in the morning after a couple of these. When I heard that Plift hemp-infused beverages was a Black owned-and-operated company, I started asking for it by name. You can get it in stores around Minnesota as well as five other states, and soon to be in Wisconsin. Plift hemp-infused beverages come in a variety of fun flavors.  There's juicy grapefruit and crisp ginger that taste a bit like natural soda. Guests at a recent dinner party reacted as they took their first sips.“I don't know what it is but I thought it was going to taste more like sparkling water, but it tastes more like pop,” said one guest.Another guest had fun saying the name aloud and then gave his verdict: “It's a pretty good beverage. I'd give it …”  He paused to take another taste. “A nine. It's not bad. I don't want to go too crazy with the rating. It's good though. I like it!”Plift also contains four milligrams of THC per can which offers a light buzz. This relatively small amount of cannabinoids, the psychoactive compounds in cannabis. Co-owner Todd Harris calls it “sessionable.” It's a brewing term for an alcoholic beverage that is light, refreshing and easy to drink, without too much inebriating effect. But unlike sessionable beer, there is no alcohol in the making of Plift. “I grew up in a family where my parents were amazing parents,” says Harris, who was born and grew up in Minneapolis. “But alcohol was prevalent. And so I quickly realized that I was always one drink away from being an alcoholic myself, as well as how alcohol played a role in communities of color. And so I said, ‘Let's go build a really good product that provides optionality for those who want ways to unwind that don't include alcohol.'” ‘Easier to get alcohol than a square meal'The negative impact of alcohol on communities of color, and in particular the Black community, is well-documented.According to the American Psychological Association, African Americans drink less, start drinking later and abuse alcohol less frequently than other races and cultures. However Black people suffer from more negative consequences of alcohol use, including more injuries and illnesses. More potent forms of alcohol, such as malt liquor and 40oz beers have historically been marketed disproportionately to Black communities. “In communities of color,” Harris goes on, “it's easier for people to get their hands on alcohol and poison than it is to get their hands on a square meal.”So he and his partner Glenn McElfresh, both fans of cannabis, decide to make what they think of as a “viable alternative” to alcohol, one arguably with fewer negative consequences. “And if we can make it at a price point that becomes affordable and accessible and approachable, then that's even better,” Harris adds. Social justice issueThe duo really think of their product, and cannabis in general, as a social justice issue, and very one that is currently super topical with the shifting marijuana legislation nationwide. This includes Minnesota's recent legalization of recreational use for people aged 21 and above.Plift decided early on that its active ingredient would come from hemp, and Harris says he has no intention of moving into marijuana. But he's watching the changing market forces in Minnesota.Historically, Black people have received the short end of the stick where it comes to marijuana use in the legal system. Black people outnumber white people four-to-one in marijuana arrests according to NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. And, says Harris, just because marijuana is legal here and in other states around the country, it doesn't mean Black people are suddenly poised to win in the marketplace. In fact, Harris predicts quite the opposite.“You're going to see scarcity of Black founders,” he said. “You're going to see the literal gentrification of cannabis.”Currently, Black ownership makes up less than two percent in the cannabis industry, according to a 2021 jobs report in Leafly, one of the leading sources on cannabis use and education. Plift is one of just a handful of Black-owned cannabis companies in the state of Minnesota. It is currently producing about one thousand cases of product per week, but say it is growing quickly. Worry for the futureHarris said they are cautiously optimistic about their position in the marketplace. Because of its much lower barriers to entry and the fact that it's already a federally legal substance, Harris and McElfresh decided to derive their cannabinoids from hemp. Thanks to that lower barrier to entry — about $1,000 for a license compared to tens of thousands for a marijuana license — about 60 sixty percent of the hemp companies in the state are owned by minorities or women, according to a study by the Minnesota Cannabis Association. But Harris worries Plift's decision to go with hemp might ultimately put their company at a disadvantage.“Corporate cannabis companies want to have a monopoly on the marketplace,” Harris explains. “And low potency THC from hemp competes directly with both medical and recreational marijuana derived THC products.”Harris said special interest groups are currently lobbying to restrict access to hemp for companies like his, and there's one reason for that: the big operations want to corner the market. “I think the fact that in 2023 we still have people who look like me locked up for things that many, many people are getting very wealthy on — mainly middle aged white men — is a travesty. And it's just another instance in how policy politics in our systems continue to fail Black people and Black men in general.” Harris worries that as marijuana continues to be legalized around the country, people of color will not benefit at large. This despite legislative calls to create opportunities for the communities most adversely affected by the war on drugs to benefit from the opportunities  offered by business possibilities created by  marijuana legalization. “There's not a good example in the country, yet in the previous 22 states that legalize adult use marijuana that can point to how communities of color in particular are benefiting.” Harris says he wants everyone to carefully consider that as the marijuana laws and landscape continue to shift, probably for years to come.“Hemp is a path forward [for Black owners]. Low potency, THC derived edibles, consumables, that's a path forward that anyone can play in, and corporate cannabis does not want the world to know that.” Harris says he dreams of one day selling the business with the goal of providing employees and families with financial security and generational wealth. However, as some Minnesotans explore the new landscape where marijuana can be enjoyed widely, Harris urges cannabis users to continue thinking of marijuana legislation, and Black presence in the marketplace, as a social justice issue.

Here, I talk with my friend Jake McElfresh of Front Porch Step for his first interview in 8 years following a scandal that ruined his career in 2014.   I was a pop-punk kid back then and made an idol of music before Jesus, living by the mantra “music saved my life” and was into FPS, using it as a way to cope during a breakup as well as the death of my grandmother — so this is a full circle moment, now that we are both born again disciples of Jesus Christ.   In this discussion, he shares how he grew up, what his journey with God looked like throughout his life — how he was a “Christian," thinking that saying a sinner's prayer meant he would go to heaven — he describes how his parents divorce affected his perspective of women, and how he got into the music scene.   From there, he speaks on his Front Porch Step career, the depraved man he was, and the gritty details of the scandal. He so vulnerably and honestly shares how it all spiraled and ultimately sent him right to rock bottom, both personally and professionally.   But that is where Jesus met Him: at the end of himself. Much later, Jake felt the unconditional love of Christ for the first time, realizing that no matter what he did, God would love and forgive him.   Jake eventually surrendered in repentance, and laid it all at the foot of the cross, turning his life around by the grace of God. His walk with Jesus led him to his wife Shanelle. He tells us the intimate story of how they met, how he courted her, and how they eventually married.   Sharing Jake's story is about demonstrating what the gospel actually is, because his testimony shows the Heart of the Father. No one is beyond redemption.   What God has done in his life is the epitome of the old man being crucified, and the new man being resurrected in Christ.   When the carnal world offers no mercy, God offers mercy as we receive His Truth in faith. That is why Jesus' free gift of salvation is so precious.   Each of us needs a Savior that we are ALL EQUALLY undeserving to have. And yet, when we have Him, there is no condemnation. He makes us a new creation, not because of who we are but because of who He is.   We pray the Lord will use this to plant seeds of faith.   --   + JAKE'S INSTAGRAM & YOUTUBE @frontporchstep   + MY INSTAGRAM: @angelamarireucci   + SOW INTO HEAVEN & HEALING PODCAST MINISTRY AND BECOME A FINANCIAL PARTNER VIA… - DONOR BOX - STRIPE - VENMO @angelamarieucci

Today in episode 12 I'm joined by Megan McElfresh, she's a third generation stained glass artist, and the wizard behind the curtain aka the executive director of the Stained Glass Association of America. Building a community and connecting people within this niche glass world is something I'm passionate about and a huge reason for starting this podcast. In Megan I found a kindred spirit in those efforts amongst others. From her vantage point she sees us all, from the part time hobbyist to the major studios. BTW did you know that all those huge studios need the small makers to keep this industry alive? It's true, and she's going to explain to us why! The SGAA also has a very cool history of protecting the stained glass industry here in the states, and I think this falls into the category of things we should really know, so Megan is here to enlighten us on that too. She's also an advocate for safety in the studio and I bet something she says today is something that you didn't think of doing or you didn't realize you needed and it could change your life! For real. It did mine. I thought I was being pretty careful and turns out there were some easy -  but major - improvements I needed to make in the studio to protect myself better. Besides being a walking Encyclopedia Britannica Megan is also funny, sweet, and someone I'm now proud to call a friend. Keep listening and you'll see why…Join me as I crack it all wide open!To learn more about the SGAA their instagram is @SGAA_HQ and the website is stainedglass.org. 351-Notes and Queries

Futility Closet

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 19, 2021 33:21

In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll explore some curiosities and unanswered questions from Greg's research, including a novelist's ashes, some bathing fairies, the mists of Dartmoor, and a ballooning leopard. We'll also revisit the Somerton man and puzzle over an armed traveler. Intro: Amanda McKittrick Ros is widely considered the worst novelist of all time. John Cummings swallowed 30 knives. Sources for our notes and queries: The Pony Express ad is quoted in Christopher Corbett's 2004 history Orphans Preferred: The Twisted Truth and Lasting Legend of the Pony Express. It appeared first in Missouri amateur historian Mabel Loving's posthumous 1961 history The Pony Express Rides On!, but she cites no source, and no one's been able to find the ad. The anecdote about John Gawsworth keeping M.P. Shiel's ashes in a biscuit tin appears in John Sutherland's 2011 book Lives of the Novelists. "The comedian and scholar of nineteenth-century decadent literature, Barry Humphries, was (unwillingly) one such diner -- 'out of mere politeness.'" Sutherland gives only this source, which says nothing about the ashes. (Thanks, Jaideep.) Henry Irving's observation about amateur actors and personal pronouns is mentioned in Robertson Davies' 1951 novel Tempest-Tost. Joseph Addison's definition of a pun appeared in the Spectator, May 10, 1711. Theodore Hook's best pun is given in William Shepard Walsh's Handy-Book of Literary Curiosities, 1892. Richard Sugg's anecdote of the Ilkley fairies appears in this 2018 Yorkshire Post article. The proof of the Pythagorean theorem by "Miss E. A. Coolidge, a blind girl" appears in Robert Kaplan and Ellen Kaplan's 2011 book Hidden Harmonies: The Lives and Times of the Pythagorean Theorem. They found it in Elisha Scott Loomis' 1940 book The Pythagorean Proposition, which cites the Journal of Education (Volume 28, 1888, page 17), which I haven't been able to get my hands on -- the Kaplans couldn't either, until they discovered it had been mis-shelved in the stacks of Harvard's Gutman Library. Neither Loomis nor the Kaplans gives the proof as it originally appeared, and neither gives Coolidge's age at the proof. The anecdote of the Dartmoor fog appears in William Crossing's 1888 book Amid Devonia's Alps. The Paris fogs of the 1780s are described in Louis-Sébastien Mercier's Tableau de Paris (Chapter CCCLXIV, 1:1014), a 12-volume topographic description of the city that appeared between 1782 and 1788, as quoted in Jeremy Popkin, ed., Panorama of Paris: Selections From Tableau de Paris, 2010. "I have known fogs so thick that you could not see the flame in their lamps," Mercier wrote, "so thick that coachmen have had to get down from their boxes and feel their way along the walls. Passers-by, unwilling and unwitting, collided in the tenebrous streets; and you marched in at your neighbour's door under the impression that it was your own." The anecdote about Charles Green and his ballooning companions appears in John Lucas' 1973 book The Big Umbrella. The best image I've been able to find of the Dobhar-chú, the "king otter" of Irish folklore, accompanies this 2018 article from the Leitrim Observer. Does a photo exist of Grace Connolly's entire headstone? According to WorldCat, G.V. Damiano's 1922 book Hadhuch-Anti Hell-War is held only by the New York Public Library System; by Trinity College Library in Hartford, Ct.; and by the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago. If it's available online, I haven't been able to find it. The incident of the dividing typewriters is mentioned in this article from the Vancouver Sun, and there's a bit more on this Australian typewriter blog. The anecdote about Enroughty being pronounced "Darby" appears in the designer's notes for the wargame The Seven Days, Volume III: Malvern Hill. This 1912 letter to the New York Times affirms the pronunciation, and this 1956 letter to American Heritage gives another explanation of its origin -- one of many. A few more confirming sources: Robert M. Rennick, "I Didn't Catch Your Name," Verbatim 29:2 (Summer 2004). Parke Rouse, "The South's Cloudy Vowels Yield to Bland Consonance," [Newport News, Va.] Daily Press, Feb. 23, 1989, A11. Earl B. McElfresh, "Make Straight His Path: Mapmaking in the Civil War," Civil War Times 46:4 (June 2007), 36-43, 5. But even if it's true, there's no consistent explanation as to how this state of affairs came about. Listener mail: Daniel Keane and Rhett Burnie, "The Somerton Man's Remains Have Been Exhumed — So What Happens Next?" ABC News, May 19, 2021. Strong DeafBy Lynn McElfresh Sometimes what the outside world views as different is the norm for you, yet you can feel like an outsider in your own home. Such is the case for Jade. Jade can hear. Her sister, Marla, can’t. But Marla resents that Jade can hear, not BECAUSE she can hear, but because Marla feels that Jade is less in some ways because she doesn’t understand how strong Marla is when she is surrounded by all deaf people. Marla feels Jade makes the family weak, by not BEING deaf. Both of the girls’ parents are deaf and have been their whole lives, so the outsider in this home is Jade, who is the only person with hearing. The sisters have such different perspectives on the world, can they ever see anything in the same way?For a more detailed review click here.Recommended for grades 6 and up.
