You need to find freedom where you are free. You're not in jail; feel the freedom of walking, of going into the sea, of going into the wilderness, and let your spirit feel free. John Lockley is a fully initiated and ordained Sangoma (African Shaman) in two lineages from South Africa, the Xhosa and Swazi nations. His Xhosa apprenticeship took 10 years and he was foreseen in a dream by his teacher, MaMngwevu, a senior Xhosa sangoma from the same tribe as Nelson Mandela, who inivted him to be her apprentice. He has pioneered the bridge between modern western Psychology and traditional South African healing. For the last 13 years he has been facilitating 'Ubuntu' (Humanity) and Way of the Leopard retreats worldwide, teaching people how they can reconnect to their Ancestors, Spirit and the Earth. And it's really not the form or even the object that's terribly important or interesting. It's that force, it's that energy, it's that habit pattern of wanting. When we don't see it, when we're caught, when we're identified with that wanting mind, it obscures the natural freedom of mind. Transform your meditation practice with Dharma Moon's 1-on-1 mentoring program: 1:1 MENTORING"There is another expression of practice, 'Hasten slowly and you will soon arrive.' There is a built-in tension between our momentum to try not to be where we are... and this instinct that is coming in just to settle in and be who we are; where we are; when we are. We are going to let that play out a little bit... We are not necessarily going to outsmart it - manipulate it and bend it to our will - and then on the other hand we are not going to be able to avoid it. Then you are in the sweet spot, and I think that is a kind of texture of practice that is very powerful." - David Nichtern NEW Meditation Series: Pause, Breathe, Be Here Now with Ram Dass, Sharon Salzberg, Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach, Joseph Goldstein, John Lockley, Ram Dev, Trudy Goodman, Lama Tsultrim Allione—FREE January 16 to 25. Intimacy with the world
The most important question in life: What is sacred to you? with John Lockley, african Shaman/Sangoma

Intimacy with the world

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 9, 2021 62:33

John Lockley is a South African Shaman or Sangoma. He is also the author of the book: Leopard Warrior. We start our conversation by talking about how the principles of shamanism are the same all over the world, even in cultures that haven't had any contact for millennia. connecting to life-force, and how we are related to this life-force: through the breath, the bones and the blood. The aim of shamanism is to give our ego away in ceremony, to the life-force that created us - and by these practices we become lighter, and we are blessed by grace. Many of these practices are also inspiring humility, for us to let go of our ego. So in the Sangoma practices are very close to the ground. We beseech the ancient ones and the nature spirits through gratitude and through humbling ourselves to the earth mother. enlightenment in shamanism is not a stage you attain, it is rather a continuous giving yourself away through prayer, gratitude and ceremony. the true centre of the human being is actually the foot. and the foot connects you to the hara. John Lockley talks about how the base of the feet in ceremonial trance dancing, gives you that deep connection to the earth, actually feeling the earth. Animals are the true gurus of the world, because they live so close to nature. We speak about how trance-dancing connects us to the mystery, with the elemental forces of nature, at through that connection we can receive the wisdom downloads from the great mystery. John tells us how being in nature is part of his spiritual practice. Listening to the land, the wind, and his to his own body, the rhythm, heartbeat and breathing. And how the walking can even bring him into trance. We need to feel our body touching the earth, and that can be such a joyful and intimate experience. The only real answer to the environmental challenges, is through the deep listening to the earth itself. We speak about what the soul is. To John, it is the immortal part of us, and through the shamanistic practices, including our dreams, we can connect to the soul. We talk about how the people of the past who lived with that connection to the dreams and the life-force, telling them how to live and which plants to use for healing, didn't get ill, they only knew life and death, not illness. And that came down to their deep humility and listening to the earth. The most important question is: what is sacred to you, and if nothing is sacred, then that is where your work lies The purpose of life, is to find your purpose The reason for someones struggles with soullesness, is due to a lack of magic in their life. A lack of wonder... One of the questions to ask to enter into that kind of wonder, is to start with the question: "what brings you joy?" Each person needs to find out what brings them in touch with the magic of life - find what is sacred for them. We speak about feelings of aloneness and loneliness, and how becoming a shaman is a calling, it is not something you choose. And we speak about the western worlds glamourising of shamanism. Whereas it is actually pretty hard being a shaman, as they are so sensitive and feel everything. A shaman is not part of the crowd, because if you are part of the crowd, you can't listen to the spirits. We speak about all the gifts of learning and speaking another language. How you have to learn to really listen, become humble and childlike again. — The root cause of sickness is disharmony inside, which filters outward from our inner landscape to the outside world. The warfare and disharmony around our planet today speak to a profound imbalance of the inner world of mankind. It is not surprising, then, that according to the World Health Organization, the leading causes of death in the world are heart disease and stroke. Our inner mental and psychological states can have a profound effect on our physical bodies. To correct this, we each have a responsibility to listen to our hearts. Valeria Teles interviews John Lockley — the author of “Leopard Warrior: A Journey into the African Teachings of Ancestry, Instinct, and Dreams.” John Lockley is a fully initiated and ordained Sangoma (African Shaman) from the Xhosa nation, the same nation as Nelson Mandela & Desmond Tutu in South Africa. His apprenticeship took 10 years. He was one of the first modern white men in recent times after Apartheid to be awarded the title of ‘Ligqira Linkulu' by his elders, meaning senior Sangoma. He has pioneered the bridge between modern western Psychology and traditional South African healing. His Xhosa name given by his teacher is ‘Ucingolweendaba' meaning ‘the messenger or bridge between cultures'. He is also a sangoma in the Swazi tradition and called ‘Gogo Moya'. For the last 10 years he has been facilitating ‘Ubuntu' (Humanity) and Way of the Leopard retreats worldwide, teaching people how they can reconnect to their Ancestors, Spirit and the Earth.  To learn more about John Lockley and his work, please visit: https://www.johnlockley.com     — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. This culminated in the creation of the Kalahari retreat. Using dreams to connect with your inner tracker and ancestors. Viruses work through nature in the wilderness to balance populations of species when needed, and how this is now illustrated at the human level with coronavirus. Can a Christian Be Depressed? #123

Hello friends, and happy Thursday to you. A bit of a heavy topic today - depression - but there us much hope in the Word when we go beyond the surface. This will be a continuing series for us also, and like our discussion of the Perseverance of the Saints, it will be spread out, rather than consecutive. Today's Scripture readings include Numbers 7 (the longest chapter we've read thus far, and the fourth longest chapter overall in the entire English Bible.), Psalms 42-43, Song of Solomon 5 and Hebrews 5. Can a Christian be depressed is our big question of the day. Medical doctor and Christian author John Lockley writes: “Being depressed is bad enough in itself, but being a depressed Christian is worse. And being a depressed Christian in a church full of people who do not understand depression is like a little taste of hell.” Psalms 42 is our focus passage, and it is a wonderful Psalm full of soaring emotion that goes up and down. I am finding a greater and greater appreciation of the Psalms as we are reading them through during quarantine. I generally do the podcast late at night, once the kids and my wife are in bed. I finish quite late, take a walk, wind down, and go to bed. I find that the Psalms have been occupying my thoughts in the morning, and that it has been very fruitful to reread the Psalms from the previous night's reading first thing as I am waking up. The Psalms are such a wonderful expression of thoughts, prayers and praises to God - I find they are teaching me to pray and worship utilizing the Words of Scripture more and more. Consider the powerful emotions found in the words of Psalms 42: My tears have been my food day and night, while all day long people say to me, “Where is your God?” 4 I remember this as I pour out my heart: how I walked with many, leading the festive procession to the house of God, with joyful and thankful shouts.5 Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God. 6 I am deeply depressed; Psalms 42:3-6 You can see where we get our focus question for the day - right here in the Holy-Spirit inspired words of Scripture, the Psalmist notes that he is depressed, and that tears have been his food. I note here, as I've noted many times, that reading the Bible dispels one of any notions that the Word of God is full of the kind of sunshine pumping, pollyannish, your best life now kind of faith that is so often proclaimed by televangelists on various 'Christian' tv channels. The Word of God is genuine, authentic, deep and often reflects the real anguish and pain of being an actual living and breathing human. This is one of the most honest and genuine passages in the Bible, and there are dozens. Most of us are unfamiliar with the depth and genuineness of the Bible. I honestly blame preachers for that. They/we tend to avoid passages like Psalms 42, and negative things. NOTE the switch between vs 8 and 9 - the flip flop. That is so characteristic of us - especially when in the throes of depression.   The Lord will send his faithful love by day; his song will be with me in the night— a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I will say to God, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about in sorrow because of the enemy’s oppression?” Psalms 42:8-9 If you've ever had this kind of jarring flip-flop from faith to fear and back again - YOU ARE NOT ALONE! It happened to many of the spiritual giants in the Bible. Let's go read Psalms 42-43, and then come back and briefly discuss the possibilities of a Christian being depressed. If you define depression in a very general and sort of vague way - maybe that depression is an extended and persistently depressed mood - keeping in mind that I'm neither a doctor, nor psychologist, I think you'll find that several giants in the Bible qualify as depressed. The Sons of Korah, authors of our Psalm today, and others count. As does Elijah and Moses, both mighty men of God that were so downcast that they told God they were ready to die. Jeremiah also fits that bill, wishing he hadn't been born, and worse. Hannah in 1st Samuel declares that she is a woman with a broken heart, and King David (Psalms 69) also went through several periods of seeming depression. Other giants of the faith have too, such as Charles Spurgeon: “I am the subject of depressions of spirit so fearful that I hope none of you ever get to such extremes of wretchedness as I go to.’”  Charles Spurgeon. “It is all very well for those who are in robust health and full of spirits to blame those whose lives are sicklied or covered with the pale cast of melancholy, but the [malady] is as real as a gaping wound, and all the more hard to bear because it lies so much in the region of the soul that to the inexperienced it appears to be a mere matter of fancy and diseased imagination. Reader, never ridicule the nervous and hypochondrichal, their pain is real; though much of the [malady] lies in the imagination [thought-processes] it is not imaginary.” Charles Spurgeon, The Treasury of David, 3 vols. (Newark, Del.: Cornerstone, 1869), 2.132. And John Piper: I cannot tell you how many hundreds of times in the last twenty-eight years at Bethlehem I have fought back the heaviness of discouragement with these very words: “Hope in God, John. Hope in God. You will again praise him. This miserable emotion will pass. This season will pass. Don’t be downcast. Look to Jesus. The light will dawn.” It was so central to our way of thinking and talking in the early eighties that we put a huge “Hope in God” sign on the outside wall of the old sanctuary and became known around the neighborhood as the “Hope in God” church. John Piper, Sermons from John Piper (2000–2014) (Minneapolis, MN: Desiring God, 2014). So - can a Christian have depression, or be depressed? You bet they can! I see nothing in Scripture that would lead me away from that conclusion, and volumes that affirm it. If you are now fighting depression know that you are NOT alone - many saints in the Bible and throughout church history also waged war against depression. I do not have an easy antidote for you, or a fake cure-all. I do want to close out with a hopeful passage from God's Word, though: Psalm 34:18: The Lord is near the brokenhearted; He saves those crushed in spirit. I'd also like to recommend David Murray's book, Christians Get Depressed Too. 5 stars, and very helpful, comforting, and faithful to God's Word! I do realize that this is short commentary, but do not despair, as this will be a topic we return to fairly regularly as we go through the Psalms!

Traditional South African shaman, John Lockley, offers his wisdom and insights in this powerful episode. We open with John guiding a beautiful meditation. He then describes his background and call to be a sangoma (traditional South African shaman). He advises on how to listen and call on dreams as well as improving the listening capability via interaction with nature. We talk about embracing spirituality beyond "love and light" to enhance development, including accepting our shadow and vulnerability. He gives advice on tapping into the power of the natural world regardless of surroundings, connecting to ancestors and coming to peace with any shame connected to lineage, and expressing kindness to ourselves. John is the author of the spellbinding book The Leopard Warrior, which gives a detailed account of his upbringing as a white, middle class youth in South Africa during apartheid, his time as an army medic, the call to shamanism, his ten year apprenticeship with a Xhosa medicine woman, the years spent immersing himself in his maternal homeland of Ireland, and so much more. John has also created meditations and shamanic practices in the form of his audio teachings, The Way of the Leopard. John's book, The Leopard Warrior, and audio teachings, The Way of the Leopard (both produced by Sounds True), can be purchased via his home page www.johnlockley.com.

He trained under Zen master Su Bong from South Korea, and spent ten years in apprenticeship with Mum Ngwevu, a medicine woman from the Xhosa tribe. Recently John authored a book called Leopard Warrior, which is not only a great exploration of African Teachings on ancestry, instinct, and dreams, but a wonderful autobiographical account of his journey to becoming a Sangoma.  In this episode we’re discussing what it means to be fully human, how aliveness can be a messenger of our purpose, cultural appropriation, how to heal your ancestral lineage, the danger of avoiding the shadow, and aligning with your own wild nature. John shared with us that his reason for doing this work is to support people in becoming intoxicated with the sweet spirit of Mother Nature, and you can feel it in his words.  For more on John’s book Leopard Warrior, or for info on private sessions with him, visit johnlockley.com

John Lockley is a traditional healer, or sangoma, from the Xhosa lineage in South Africa, the same tribe that gave us Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He runs "Ubuntu" (humanity) workshops worldwide, helping people connect to their ancestors, the earth, and one another. His mission in the Western world could be summed up in the Xhosa word "Masiyembo"—involving a profound remembering of the human spirit. As John says, "When people can remember their dreams and connect to their life purpose, then their true vocation surfaces; namely being in service and acting as guardians to our planet." With Sounds True, John has published Leopard Warrior: A Journey into the African Teachings of Ancestry, Instinct, and Dreams. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, John speaks with Tami Simon about his startling journey to becoming a sangoma and what he learned while caught between two cultures in apartheid-era South Africa. They speak on what it means to honor one's ancestors and how life takes on a new richness with that practice. Finally, John sings a blessing song called "The Great Spirit," inviting listeners to share in its calling. (69 minutes)

She had foreseen his arrival in a dream and began his 10-year apprenticeship, giving him the initiated name Ucingolwendaba, meaning messenger or connector between people and cultures.John trained under difficult conditions in the townships of the Eastern Cape. Why Shamanism Now - A Practical Path to Authenticity

John Lockley, a senior shaman in the Xhosa lineage of South Africa is our guest this week. John is one of the first white men in recent history to become a fully initiated Xhosa Sangoma, meaning seers, dreamers or prophets – they are the traditional healers of South Africa. John explains, “My journey is about reconciliation and part of my job is to help heal the past. When people are more connected with their own spirits, there is less of a desire to destroy or put down another. I don’t intend to bring Xhosa or South African shamanic culture to the West as such, but rather to use its essence – the techniques of prayer, dream work and connection to nature – to help people connect with their own ancestors and spiritual traditions.” John joins host, Christina Pratt, for the first of our series of Society of Shamanic Practitioners sponsored shows. Through these monthly shows we explore how contemporary shamans are meeting the challenge of their world where the relations of things—the living and the dead, the humans and nature, and Western Way and the spirit world—are profoundly out of balance. It is the ancient role of the shaman in all cultures to tend the balance of things. How are these shaman meeting this extraordinary need today?
