Building a talent ecosystem to help the 120 million professionals in Southeast Asia grow their careers. Well, that's the aspiration and the mission of our guest for today Glints. Founded in 2015, Glints is a recruitment platform that allows organisations to hire the right talent from anywhere in Southeast Asia.  With operations spanning across key markets such as Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam, the firm has so far empowered over 3 million talent and supported 50,000 organisations in realising their human potential.  And according to a Tech In Asia report, the firm had in September registered “record-high” revenues in the 2022 financial year of S$45.4 million, an 85% year-on-year increase.  Glints attributed this to growing demand for cross border talent. This comes as firms become more willing to hunt for talent outside of their head offices.  But why is this the case? What bearing will this have on Glints' strategy to acquire talent within Southeast Asia, and how far will this trend continue to drive Glint's business looking ahead? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Ying Cong Seah, Co-founder, Glints.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"One pattern I've noticed is teams that are close and trust each other can talk about problems. They tend to go a long way together, and founders stick on the journey. The second one is a mission. If they have a clear mission and they're very clear about why they're doing this for a purpose larger than serving themselves. If you have a mission that you're living for, that you're fighting for, larger than yourself, then that will give you the motivation to keep going when things are tough." - Oswald Yeo "It was the awareness that it's not only about working hard and going through the grind day after day, that's very important. You just have to put in the hours. But it's the awareness that clarity is key, especially when you're building and leading a team. If you're leading a hundred people, a thousand people, you can be working hard, but if they're all working on the wrong things, then your head is heading off in the wrong direction at a faster velocity. So having clarity and ensuring that you take a step back to make sure your team is working on the right things, executing the right strategy." - Oswald Yeo "So one thing we have at our company, Glints, is a value called a beginner's mindset. We ask questions like, 'When was the last time someone gave you negative feedback?' and we observe how people react to that. Some people react defensively to feedback, while others respond well, becoming reflective and striving to improve themselves. At the core of it, it is ego, because if you can set aside your ego and reflect, recognizing that there are areas for improvement, I believe that, in combination with habits like reading or learning from mentors, it will propel you a long way." - Oswald Yeo In a discussion between Jeremy Au and Oswald Yeo, the CEO of Glints, key insights emerged regarding Oswald's entrepreneurial journey in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia. He emphasized the importance of adapting to Indonesia's unique market needs and tailoring strategies accordingly, while also building a strong team based on trust and clear communication. Oswald highlighted the significance of gaining clarity through mindfulness practices like silent retreats and meditation. Despite acknowledging funding challenges in the tech landscape, Oswald remained optimistic about opportunities for startups in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, and encouraged founders to prioritize clarity and strategy execution for success. He also shared insights about Glints' product market fit pivot, showcasing the company's adaptability to cater to the demands of the Southeast Asian talent market. Additionally, Glints recently released the Southeast Asia Startup Talent Report 2023 in collaboration with Monk's Hill Ventures. The report provides comprehensive salary and equity data, startup trends, and valuable insights from interviews with founders, VCs, and operators in Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Overall, the discussion shed light on Oswald's entrepreneurial journey, highlighting the importance of local market adaptation, effective team building, mindfulness, and the positive outlook for tech startups in Southeast Asia. Welcome to Season 6 of The New Exchange Podcast: The Passport Season. This is an idea that's been kicking in my head for quite a while now and getting to have it materialize for you feels unreal. Traveling has been a major part of my whole life and the thing that I value the most about traveling is how I've perpetually gotten to meet people who're different than me. The Passport Season is all about celebrating those differences and also exploring them. This season will feature 6 episodes that will feature multiple guests from a specific country. Our first episode is about Belgium, the capital of Europe. Something I swiftly learned when making this episode is how the energy of the musicians in Belgium is reflective of the people who live there. Where the closest thing to a Belgian identity is a willingness to be eclectic. I'm joined by Glints (2:45), Coely (30:14), Jasper Maekelberg (52:35), and High Hi (76:29). Also, next week I'll be dropping a radio broadcast that goes along with this episode. The playlist for that will be full of incredible Belgian artists, many of who we talk about on today's podcast. That radio broadcast will be dropping on June 7th and you'll find that only on Spotify.

"To build, sell, and lead. Those are three essential roles for the future, and learning to do all three simultaneously or being ambidextrous is incredibly challenging but valuable. Building is key - can you code or understand code and leverage technology to construct and organize effectively? Selling is about understanding human needs and identifying problems to solve." - Jeremy Au "I think values are important for leadership because people need to connect with you and understand what you stand for. It's about creating a just environment and treating others fairly, not just in a transactional way. Values are connected to your sense of self and confidence in knowing what you believe in, even if it goes against what others think. It's important to have a sense of right and wrong and a sense of self in those things." - Shiyan Koh In this episode of BRAVE, Jeremy Au and Shiyan Koh discuss the current state of the job market and provide advice for individuals navigating this challenging time. They predict that the pain caused by the pandemic is likely to drag on for another two years and that layoffs will continue to be a reality for many companies. They caution against shallow cuts, which can negatively impact morale and create uncertainty among remaining employees. When it comes to preparing for the future, they highlight the importance of building skills in communication, technology, and statistics. Rather than training for specific jobs, they emphasize the need to develop these core skills, which can be applied to a range of positions. In addition to technical skills, they stress the importance of values and the ability to lead, sell, and build. They also discuss the need to maintain a sense of self and confidence in the face of uncertainty. They emphasize the importance of having values and being able to communicate them effectively, as well as the need to build resilience and develop the ability to thrive in challenging situations. Overall, they provide practical advice for individuals looking to navigate the job market during a time of great uncertainty and change. "Instead of speaking to god, I picked up my phone and started talking to Siri. I said… "Is it time to let the dream go?” Meet Helen, a horse-loving entrepreneur who successfully pursued her life-long dream of owning a riding farm in the country. Despite growing up in the city with no farming experience, she had a single-minded purpose and worked towards her goal relentlessly. She spent a decade saving up and getting as much experience with horses as she could so she could buy her own plot of land in the country. So at nearly 30, despite being single and scared of being alone, she took the leap and moved to a small country town by herself where she knew no one, and had no running water or electricity. She had nothing but a plot of land, a stray dog and her horses to keep her company... but she had a dream and her mother's visions that her soulmate - "the man with the golden glints" - was out there somewhere waiting for her. Epic romance. Making your dreams come true. A life off the beaten path. If this isn’t a story about following your inner voice, we don’t know what is! Tnfld.com | That #nofilter life dream
