Land art, the movement which emerged in the 1960s and 70s with artists such as Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, and Michael Heizer erecting monumental works in far-flung destinations, is widely regarded for its engagement with the environment and its elements. These remarkable installations are crafted in concert with the Earth, meant to evolve as sun, storms, and seasons weather them continuously over time. But what if you homed in on the core of this concept, creating sweeping land artworks in ways and places where they would be truly temporary, imprints made for a moment before disappearing back into the Earth? This is the crux of California-based artist Jim Denevan's dynamic practice, which involves interacting with topographies and terrains to craft ephemeral compositions that play with the impermanence of our ever-changing world. Since the mid-1990s, Denevan has traversed the globe creating unfathomably massive works in sand, earth, and ice, often using no more than a rake, stick, or even the soles of his feet. He has etched miles-long Fibonacci circles in Siberia's frozen Lake Baikal, drawn shore-spanning spirals in San Francisco's Ocean Beach, and sculpted concentric rings of sand mounds at international public art exhibitions Desert X AlUla in Saudi Arabia and Manar Abu Dhabi. His work has been featured in institutional shows at MoMA PS1, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, as well as the Oscar long-listed documentary Man in the Field, which explored Denevan's artistic career and his culinary trajectory as the founder of Outstanding in the Field, a roving restaurant set where food is sourced to connect diners with the origins of their meals. This spring, Artnet collaborated with Denevan on an original project, titled “You Only Live Once,” showcasing the all-new 2024 Lexus GX alongside the artist bringing to life an incredible land artwork in Lake Harper north of Los Angeles. Taking the shape of the universal number “1,” the more than quarter-mile piece is a dramatic testament to making the most of our time on this Earth by confidently pursuing our curiosities and drive for adventure.

It's a perfect Thursday to care for the millions of people who will walk through our doors. Today we're talking about the proposed terms set forth by the UAW. We're also talking about the return of two icons…one is a truck and the other is a household name for household wares. The players are all on the field as UAW President Shawn Fain has announced the union's intention to pursue an audacious set of proposals from Detroit's Big 3. The "most ambitious" contract demands in decades include double-digit wage gains, restoration of pensions, and improved benefits for retirees. The union is also pushing for a reduced 32-hour workweek.Fain emphasized that if the automakers want to celebrate their record profits, they should be prepared for record contracts, pointing out the substantial concessions made by the union in the past.Stellantis expressed its willingness to collaborate on the proposed terms, stating a shared interest in securing the future of its employees and their families, while also emphasizing the need for a globally competitive contract."If the companies want to brag about record profits, then it's time for record contracts," Fain said. "It's time for them to deliver for our members, and we're going to deliver for our members, come hell or high water."The current contract expires on September 14thThe internet is abuzz as the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser stages its comeback. Discontinued in the United States in 2021, it's making a grand return with a 2024 model that exudes retro charm. The transformation is marked by a smaller size and the introduction of an exclusive hybrid version which will likely be a vast improvement to the iconic poor fuel efficiency of the vehicle. The new design shares its architecture with other Toyota models like the Sequoia, Tacoma, and Tundra, as well as the Lexus GX and LX but is slightly more compact, yet still wider than the old 200 Series.Perhaps the most captivating aspect of this comeback is the Land Cruiser's newfound affordability. Anticipated to be priced at about $30,000 less than the outgoing 200 Series, the revived Land Cruiser is sure to attract a new generation of off-road enthusiasts. In a bold move to redefine its online retail identity, Overstock.com's CEO, Jonathan Johnson, revealed his jealousy and has decided to adopt the name of a well-known competitor. Overstock acquired the digital assets of the bankrupt Bed Bath & Beyond earlier this year and has since made a full transition to its iconic brand, signaling a significant shakeup in the e-commerce home goods sector.Johnson highlighted that the name Overstock.com no longer represented their business model and needed "sprucing up."The transition allows Overstock.com to distance itself from its original image as a clearance sale website and negative associations from the past.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

We were there for the “double feature” event where the Japanese luxury brand unveiled the all-new 2024 Lexus GX and the all-new 2024 Lexus TX. Staying connected while we are in our cars is critical for many of us. Now a new study shows just how important that is to American consumers and to the carmakers and data providers that are vying tooth and nail for what is predicted to be a giant market. We'll have details on that coming up. And just when you thought there were no more three-row SUVs to talk about, we have another for you. Buick has shown us a glimpse of the heavily revised 2024 Envision, and we'll tell you more. In the road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague will describe his week-long experience with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Host Jack Nerad will discuss the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E, the all-electric Mustang crossover SUV. Our special guest this week is Jamie Zinser, Vice President, Global Automotive, Novelis Inc., and a prime mover in a consortium called Alumobility. Jack Nerad recently had a chance to talk with her about the value of using aluminum rather than steel in automobiles. Electric vehicles might well be the biggest beneficiaries of that. America on the Road
Fall, Maine Woods, Ford Raptor: A Threesome Meant to Go Together

America on the Road

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 23, 2022 40:12

Few things seem like more fun than bashing around the Maine woods in a Ford F-150 Raptor. And that's just what America on the Road Co-Host Chris Teague did this past week. We've tested Raptors before but this one was equipped with an upgraded package that included 37-inch 50R17LT BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires. Among other things, the beefy sidewall tires improved the ground clearance of the off-road marvel by over an inch. And they also had some other unexpected effects. Power was never a problem with 450 horsepower readily available from the 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6. It channels its power through a 10-speed automatic transmission and a standard four-wheel-drive system and a two-speed transfer case. The Raptor's suspension is remarkably supple, meant to glide over obstructions instead of confronting them. The big question is this: after driving the Raptor with 37-inchers does Chris Teague prefer it to the Ram 1500 TRX? And what does Host Jack Nerad have to say about all that? In addition to having his own opinions about the Ford F-150 Raptor Nerad also tested another off-roader this week — the Lexus GX 460. While the Lexus name doesn't always conjure up an off-road image, the GX 460 is in many ways more at home on the trail than on suburban avenues. Underneath it is a truck that owes a lot to the fabled Toyota 4Runner. In fact, you could look at it as a more potent 4Runner since it is powered by a 301-horsepower 4.6-liter V8. Its one of a dwindling handful of V8s left on the market and delivers more power than the 4Runner's V-6. With four-wheel-drive and 329 lb-ft of peak torque, the Lexus GX 460 offers a robust 6,500-pound towing capacity. And it has trailer sway control to enhance straight-line tracking with a boat or camping trailer behind. In all, the Lexus GX 460 might not be what many of its prospective buyers think it will be with virtues they don't anticipate and foibles that might frustrate them. We'll discuss all of that in this episode of America on the Road. In the news, there is reason to be concerned if you're sharing the roadways with drivers who are misusing some advanced driver assistance systems. According to a new study, many drivers are asking those systems to perform tasks they are not capable of handling. And the results could be tragic for them and for others on the highway. We'll have the details on that coming up. Also in the news, recent federal legislation has thrown the EV market up in the air. Now government trade regulators are in talks with their European counterparts to try to resolve the problems it has caused. But once the law has been passed can its obvious flaws be fixed? We'll tell you our opinions next. And there are new developments in the partnership between Honda and Sony on electric vehicles. They've set a date, though they don't have a bridal registry anywhere. More to come on that too. Our special guest this week is Brittany Grande, GM Field Service Engineer She and Host Jack Nerad will talk about the critical shortage of auto technicians that is currently plaguing the industry. It might represent a big opportunity for you or someone you know. General Motors has a program that can make a big difference. And we'll talk with her about that. All that and more is served up hot right here on America on the Road.

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 has a few upgrades and it's on Consumer Reports' most reliable cars list for 2022. Photo © Gretchen Gaither/2022 "What we do is survey our members, our millions of members, and ask about their experiences with the cars they own or have owned," said Linkov of the most reliable cars list. "We just don't look at current vehicles, we look at used cars, the ones they've had for years. We have data going back 20 years." 2022 Most Reliable Cars The current most reliable cars list involves a database of information for about 320,000 vehicles. The publication's analysts calculate the list on their prediction of which new car models will give car owners the fewest number of problems covering 17 trouble areas. The criteria range from ranging minor nuisances to expensive repairs. "We have data for all different years of vehicles," Linkov said of this year's most reliable cars list. "But we also have robust data that allows us to predict for the new model year." The 2022 Toyota Highlander is among the most reliable cars in 2022, according to Consumer Reports. Three Toyota models, two vehicles from Mazda and one car each from Cadillac, Honda, Kia, Lexus and Subaru are also on the list "We've been around for more than 70 years; We certainly have evolved over time in the sense of our relationships with manufacturers," said Linkov of Consumer Reports' enduring reputation. "We still hold them accountable. I've been there almost 20 years and early in my career and before I was even there, there might have been a little bit of an adverbial relationship." Most Reliable Cars 2022: Three Toyotas "They didn't really understand us and we really wanted to have a closed-off wall from communicating with them. Now it's different. We don't take advertising. We pay the rent of the getting a press car from them. But we do have a better sharing of data and a better rapport. In the end, that makes a vehicle for a consumer." The 2022 Lexus GX, a luxury midsized sedan, is Consumer Reports' most reliable vehicle for 2022. It has a price range of $56,125 to $65,365. It's rated at 12 miles per gallon in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway. Here's the top-10 list: 1. Lexus GX Price Range: $56,125 - $65,635 CR MPG: Overall 17 / City 12 / Hwy 24 mpg 2. It's a vicious cycle: brandnew cars are exciting, but fall to the back of the auto show display after a couple of years. After awhile, that once brand-new machine is a few years old and is starting to show its age. Sure, a car might get a mid-cycle update to freshen it up and add some tech, but its bones might still have some age. By the time it's at the end of its production cycle, the once-loved machine sees jeers for being past its prime. Well, that's kind of what's happening with the venerable Lexus GX 460 -- the V8 powered luxury off-roader cousin to the Toyota 4Runner. This Lexus debuted all the way back in President Obama's first term. Now, Lexus did update the GX 460 in 2019, but it's still old. Though, instead of bemoaning its aging tech or slightly behind the curve V8's output, the GX offers you a body-on-frame SUV experience with the hardware to take you anywhere you want to go, which should be appreciated. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2022 Lexus GX 460 and takes you along for the ride. Wren takes you on a guided tour of this Lexus SUV and highlights its styling, features and interior. Wren then climbs behind the wheel and takes you along for a live drive review. Along with these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's west coast editor Mark Vaughn about the Lexus GX, off-roading and the demand for vehicles like the GX 460. Closing the show, the pair talk about what makes this Lexus special.

This episode of America on the Road includes an in-depth interview with Brian Bell, marketing manager of the all-new 2021 Ford F-150. The F-150 is the bestselling vehicle in the United States, a title it has held for decades, so an all-new version is big news. In his discussion with Jack Nerad Bell gives a detailed look at the F-150's new features that include a hybrid powertrain, a 12-inch infotainment screen and interior work areas. The Volvo V60 Cross Country and Lexus GX 460 are the subjects of the week's road tests. The V60 Cross Country is that rare species, a station wagon, although it represents a modification of the conventional V60 wagon designed to give it more off-road cred. The Lexus GX 460 is an old-school body-on-frame SUV that is filled with luxury features. In this iteration, it features a revised grille and some revised driver-assistance technologies. And its powerful engine gives it a leg up when the trail gets rough. In the news segment, hosts Chris Teague and Jack Nerad look at June auto sales and their rapid rebound from the pandemic panic, and Chris delivers some thoughts on the proper care and feeding of hand sanitizer in a vehicle.   Lexus GX 460 slideshow Volvo V60 Cross Country slideshow

Toyota revealed the all-new Land Cruiser which is basically a more affordable and arguably better looking version of the Lexus GX and is finally bringing the plug-in hybrid Lexus RX450h+ to America. Speaking of America, we've poisoned Britain with our preference for SUVs over cars so Volvo is going to stop selling cars in the UK. Mazda couldn't find enough American buyers for the MX-30 so it's discontinuing it here.
