Pat Flynn – The Power of Collaborative Teamwork for the Entrepreneur: From Solopreneur to SPI Media and Beyond (AoL 200)

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2021 67:27

In the last session, I brought up the books Key Person of Influence and OverSubscribed both written by Daniel Priestley and one thing that these books have made is that the dream of the solopreneur is a pipedream. In fact, as a business owner, we need to seek collaborative teamwork as soon as possible. And, as I've been telling people in my day to day life, I think these books are as vital to someone's success as an entrepreneur as Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The E-Myth Revisited are. Sure, you can go without reading any of these books... but I highly suggest you don't pass them over. For the longest time, today's guest might have been considered the Ultimate Warrior of Solopreneurship. In fact, for much of its history, Smart Passive Income (SPI) featured Pat Flynn as the Crash Test Dummy of Online Business. And if he could start a six figure passive income business on his own, anyone could. But here's the thing. For several years now, he's been part of a team. Sure, he's been the head of creative at SPI, but he's been part of a team. And I have to admit, when that transition happened out of the blue, I (and I'm sure plenty of others) felt left behind. But as you'll hear, when he joined forces with Matt Garland and his team, things completely changed. The power of collaborative teamwork began changing his business and his life.Listen in as Veronica and I hear about his Pat his journey of leaving the legend of the great solopreneur behind to join his own team of Avengers.I think it's a lesson we all have to hear moving forward.Enjoy! Kira Leskew – Taking a Step Back to See the Big Picture: Finding Inner Peace in a World of Chronic Hustle and Burnout (AoL 199)

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2021 60:02

A couple of books I've been reading recently are essentially about finding inner peace as a business owner. One is called Key Person of Influence, and the other is called OverSubscribed both by Daniel Priestley. One's about becoming someone who creates opportunities in life through relationships while the other is about making you and your brand something so desired that there's a waiting list. How are they about inner peace? Well, both of them are books essentially about anti-hustle. They're books about working smarter, not harder. (They're also both available on Scribed). So many of us are used to working harder in our lives that we forget the price that we pay to do so.I know I have. And I've realized that pushing the capacity of myself wasn't really getting me further along. In fact, it was ruining not only my relationships but also my own physical wellbeing.I first started on this path of discovery when I met this session's guest, Kira Leskew in the summer of 2020. And while I was still trying to figure out what my next steps were, I was also trying to carry on all the other things that I was already doing. After working with her for a few months to learn about Pranayama last fall, I have continued to use it and other tools to get the weight of the world off my shoulders.I've realized (and I continue to realize) people who get to where many of us want to be - they don't overwork themselves. In fact, according to Key Person of Influence, they do just the opposite. In this episode, and as we close out season 5, I wanted to have Kira on to share with you some of the insight I've learned during this Pandemic stricken year. It really did allow me to slow down so I could speed up.Listen in as she shares with us some of her thoughts on anti-hustle, being present, and keeping yourself from burning out.Enjoy! SPECIFICALLY, YOU'LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT: How did Kira get into teaching others about meditation? 14:03What was the critical moment that made Kira consider meditation? 15:32How did she realize that others would be interested in the same realizations she's had? 20:25A lot of times, business owners find themselves in the weeds of the business. How can they raise themselves up to see the bigger picture more frequently? 27:31For people who have problems actually getting into meditation, what would Kira recommend to people to finally make it happen? 30:37How is she addressing all the burnout that's going on due to the pandemic? 36:01How can business leaders who feel pulled in many directions be able to reset themselves? 39:30What's Kira excited about in the coming year? 47:31Who are three influencers who helped Kira get to where she's at today? 49:18If she could ask anyone living or dead a question, who and what would it be? 50:09What's something Kira thinks is going to affect entrepreneurship in the future she's excited about? 51:08In the last 5 years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved Kira's life? 51:35What's it mean to live a life of abundance? 53:43 ITEMS and PEOPLE MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Kira Online: Website, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTubeCohost: Veronica KirinPowered By: Groove DigitalBrushfire MarketingTim Cook announces Apple's focus on WellnessMaria GonzalesMorrnah Nalamaku SimeonaPrahamahansa Yogananda Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. Jerome Myers – Discovering Your True Self: How To Allow Yourself to Start Living Your Dream (AoL 198)

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2021 62:33

One of the things I've learned in the last 10 years (and even more so since the start of the pandemic) is many of us, including myself at times, ask if we're worthy enough to level up and start living our dream. Scratch that - OUR DREAMS.See, here's the thing. Society has told us what's important and that's the magic dollar bill. How you get it is secondary to actually getting it. Because so many people focus on the end destination (which, hint... there is no end destination), it really doesn't matter how you get the result. However, what I've learned along the way is that if you can tap into your true self and do work that has meaning to you and/or you finding fascinating, then the sky's the limit. That was true for this session's guest, Jerome Myers. As he tells it in this chat, while he was in college he realized that there are easier ways to earn income than trading time for money. In particular, he learned that multi-family housing can be particularly lucrative.More so, he realized that when he "figured it out" that others need to know how to get free from the Matrix and live their dreams as well.Listen in as he shares with us some of his thoughts on steps to finding our true selves and how we can make sure we don't live a nightmare of constantly trying to do it with little luck.Enjoy! SPECIFICALLY, YOU'LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT: How was Jerome given the "permission" to seek something other than a traditional day job? 14:14Where did Jerome get the idea that he even wanted to get into real estate investing? 16:34What makes the red pill easy to swallow for some people, while other people get choked? 21:21Are there a couple of signs someone can look for when it comes to pursuing their dream full time? 23:50What are three things that Jerome suggests that a dreamcatcher can do to make sure their dream doesn't become a nightmare? 26:57Why does Jerome have multiple podcasts as opposed to bringing in a video element? 28:33Does Jerome have any success stories of where he's been able to help others take the red pill? 34:20When it comes to the Hero's journey, does Jerome feel like society is preventing people from living their own? 42:21What are a handful of concepts people should consider before they leave a successful 9 to 5 career to go do their own thing? 44:39How does someone make their job making revenue streams for their family? 50:11What future dream does Jerome want to pursue himself? 53:26Who were Jerome's top 3 influencers who helped him get to where he's at today? 55:01What's the best advice he's ever received? 56:46Is there something he's become good at saying no to? 57:20What's the piece of advice he likes to give others? 57:50What does it mean to live a life of abundance? 58:16 ITEMS and PEOPLE MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Jerome Online: Website, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeCohost: Andy DixPowered By: Uncover Your Personal Mission12 Stages of the Hero's Journey Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. Often when we think about making millions of dollars, they think of three things. Primarily those things include building a business to a particular revenue level, creating a portfolio of real estate, or getting lucky in the stock market. That last one has always been something that I've struggled to believe - that you had to have luck to find the right top stock picks.Back in session 182, we learned from Jason Brown that it's possible to create a predictable revenue stream from stocks. So after hearing that, I did a bit of research. What I came up with was a subscription the Rich Dad Newsletter... but unfortunately, it was simply a way for his publishing company to make $250 off of me while upselling other solutions. It was frustrating to the say the least. However, it wasn't much longer before I met today's guest, Sean Tepper, and my paradigm started to shift. In today's chat, Sean shares with us how he created a platform called TYKR out of a need to develop his own passive income stream. In it we learn that being an angel investor isn't everything it's cracked up to be. And we also hear how, with the use of the platform itself, how we can all build passive income through the magic of compound interest.Enjoy! SPECIFICALLY, YOU'LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT: When Sean was developing a means to create passive income, why did he go with the stock market vs going the real estate route? 13:46How does playing the stock market actually yield passive income? 16:17What's some advice Sean has heard in the entrepreneurial space that he believes doesn't work for everyone? 17:57What are the key features of TYKR? 19:15How did the journey go for Sean as he was creating the platform? 23:26How does Sean find great guests for his show? 27:18Sean has posts about certain stocks on his blog. For a good majority of the population, an online presentation can be a drag. Reason why is that most people are simply new to doing online business. They simply haven't heard all the tips and tactics which have been discussed in the digital marketing space for the last 10+ years. As of 2020, though, the game has changed. And just like how Facebook was once a place for college students to get together and discuss school and their favorite professors, things have changed for Zoom as well. What was once a platform utilized mainly by podcasters and tech savvy businesses, everyone and their brother is using the platform. However, that doesn't mean that they're doing a great job doing so. In fact, poor presentation skills is nothing new. It's just now being done in a widely used online setting. So in this conversation with our guest, Rich Mulholland, we find out how he's not only been able to help people get better at presentations themselves, but why so many business owners fail to take their business to the next level. It was very interesting and unexpected to Andy and I how these very different topics actually are related.Enjoy! When it comes to my work here at New Inceptions, one of the most often asked questions I've received is "JC, how did you find your why?" 10 years ago, I wouldn't have really known what they were talking about. I hadn't really thought about my motivators in life. Sure, I had thought about my personality and what I was naturally attracted to doing, but not what actually goes behind that thinking. In fact, when I first heard Simon Sinek's "Start with Why" presentation, it made since how he was relating it to companies, but it hadn't really clicked for me how it related to people. That wouldn't be until later. However, someone it did click with at the personal level was the founder of the Why Institute, Gary Sanchez. In this chat, Gary's right hand man, Dan Dominguez shares with us in his own words where he was when he stumbled upon Gary's work and how Gary actually put the work together.More specifically we'll learn how Dan is now living his best life due to the work Gary has done as founder of the Why Institute. If you're still struggling to figure out your own Why, perhaps getting some time with Dan might be in your not too distant future? Self sabotaging behavior is a common theme when it comes to personal and business development (or the lack thereof). Whether it's the lack of willpower to get healthier, the determination it takes to go through college, or the focus it takes to build one's business, there's one thing that is certain when it comes to accomplishment: setting a goal is one thing - but actually achieving that goal is something completely different. In this session of the show, Ya'el Johnson and I get to talk to two completely different kinds of individuals who have made it their passion to help others figure out how to achieve goals like this.Through their app called the Consistency Chain, they're helping tons of people build good habits in place of the ones that have lead them to where they are now.In their recent book built on the same premise, The Consistency Chain for Network Marketing, authors George Campbell & Jim Packard suggest that the main reason that people don't do well with network marketing is that they simply haven't built the right habits to actually grow their business. Interestingly, George goes on to say that he was only successful when he realized he was the common denominator between all these opportunities. In this conversion, we explore how they came to that conclusion and some of the concepts one should consider when trying to achieve anything in this world - let alone building a network marketing business!Enjoy! As we're getting started in this second year of potentially a two or three year pandemic "clean up" plan, there's going to be plenty of time for us to really adjust and think about where we fit in the world. It's a great time to develop our skills for success. What do I mean by that? Well, it's a forced transition period for all of us. What might have been our identity in the past, might not work in the PAE.That said, one group of individuals who all have to go through this major life change sometime in their career are professional athletes. Like our guest, Desmond "Dez" Clark says, if your identity was wrapped up into your job (as an athlete), you're going to have issues when you can't do that job anymore.Luckily for Dez, he knew who he was before his career as a professional athlete. So when he finished up, yes, there was a transition period, but he was the same Dez who used the game as a means to get what he wanted. In this chat with him, Ya'el and I learn a little bit of what he's learned over the years through these transitions and how he's been able to stay the course during his life using those experiences.Enjoy! SPECIFICALLY, YOU'LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT: Where did Desmond's early leadership mentality come from? 8:46How did he develop a vision for his athletic life and able to stick to it? 12:11When did Dez realize it was time to transition into a new life/identity? 17:07Why does he believe his success wasn't a coincidence? 20:50How did Dez start realizing that failures aren't necessarily endings but just learning opportunities no matter the cost? 25:00How does he actively build relationships to help him and those around him get to the next level? 28:11Is there a secret to gauging if a conversation is a winning conversation? 29:43What's a bad day look like to Dez? 38:25What is he looking forward to in 2021? 41:06Which teachers have helped him get to where he's at today? 42:53If he could ask anyone living a dead a question, who and what would he ask? 43:11Which issue should be discussed more today, yet hardly anyone does? 44:01What advice does he hear adults give children which he'd like to call BS on? 44:21What's the secret to achieving personal freedom? 45:02 ITEMS and PEOPLE MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Desmond Online: Website, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, InstagramCohost: Ya'el JohnsonPowered By: FREE GUIDE: Uncover Your Personal Mission Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. As we're quickly hurtling towards 2021, many a young professional is finding it harder and harder to sync into the "real world" once they're out of college. For me, it's been over 10 years since I got out. And it took me quite awhile to get my bearings. I can only imagine what it's like now as the world is changing faster and faster outside the ivory tower of academia.Personally, I think 2020 has been a wake up call in more ways than one. Sure, we've been talking about pivoting all year since the virus officially dropped. But one thing we haven't discussed is the need for better networking skills. For yours truly, I struggled with this for awhile when I got out of school. In fact, I wasn't all that great at it even when I started this podcast. However, it was through the podcast, that I have been able to build my networking skills. It's definitely not the same perspective I have on the art as I did when I first entered into the "real world". It would have been nice to have been taught some of the stuff you'll learn in today's conversation in school. So, if you're a young professional, entering the workforce, or have an expendable entry level position, what can you do to hedge your bets? Well, I think a great start is to look at someone like Emily Mishler as a fine example of how to get yourself out there.Listen in as Andy and I find out how she's been able to reach the professional level she has as a late 20-something.Enjoy! As 2020 is coming quickly to an end, we're moving closer to favorable conditions to be creatively self employed. However, that might be easier said than done. For many, the pandemic has set people back in more ways than one. If we want to build confidence going into the new year and to be a player in the Pandemic Adjusted Economy (PAE), we'll likely need to rebuild and equip ourselves with new expectations of what's possible.Personally, I feel that 2020 has helped me reflect and improve my vision of what my businesses can be. In fact, we're improving the model of everything I'm involved with. I've certainly learned a few lessons from this past year. More so how to build businesses that are pandemic proof! However, I understand that not everyone has been able to gain that clarity. In fact, I think a lot of people who've lost their business aren't quite sure how to pick things up to rebuild. Or, even if they'd want to. Or maybe, someone's been waiting for the best time to start out on their own - but they're especially not sure if NOW is the best time to get started. Here's the thing: everyone who was affected by COVID-19 will still have to start from a level playing ground when we're given the greenlight to begin again. So don't let your fears hold you back. Reach out and find those who can be a catalyst for what you're trying to achieve. One such person I'd recommend reaching out to is this session's guest, Casey Sharperson. In the last five years, I've learned a lot of things from doing this show. If someone is looking, I really think it can help someone live the life they want. However, while I might have learned plenty since starting the show, I'd say a big part of that knowledge is simply developing new perspectives on what I already thought I knew. While I've had several changes of perspective, three have stood out the most this year. The first big perspective change I had was that it really does take awhile to master a craft. For example, while I feel I know a lot about producing a great sounding show, there's always tweaks I can be making to improve the show as a whole. But it's only from that experience that I know to make those changes. You're not going to learn meaningful knowledge overnight. The second perspective shift I've received from the show was actually a big game changer. I realized the more people are doing work aligned with what's important to them in life and how others see them, the closer they are to doing work that isn't really... work. And the third realization came from understanding this past year one thing: The more people you meet and let into your life, the more opportunity you have to grow.I share those three perspectives with today's guest, Justin Breen. In fact, when I realized he was building his business on these three core beliefs, it occured to me that I should probably embrace them more myself.Listen in as he shares with Veronica and I why these beliefs are important to him and how they've empowered him to live the life he's proud of.Enjoy! Believe it or not, but there's a lot of people in this world who are afraid to think big. The reason for this is pretty simple... at least to them. Why think of making a huge impact when you can't even get your own life straight? What I've learned is that having big goals and dreams actually helps one deal with the now. If we have a worthwhile goal, it allows us to prioritize it. And that, allows us to not prioritize what's good now... or at least the actions that might self sabotage us in the long run. Some businesses might have many options, while most actually have a handful or less.Generally speaking, when you're starting a podcast, it's no different. Sure, there's a few podcasts out there that practically anyone can listen to, but for the most part, shows need to be tailored to the audience. This is especially true if the host isn't well known. When this session's guest, Joe Sanok, started his podcast, not many people knew who he was outside of his therapy work. When it comes to the stock market, the most knowledge people typically have is letting someone else manage their portfolio. Robert Kiyosaki strongly urges people not to do this because, generally speaking, those that do manage other people's money do so in whatever way they can earn the most commission. So, where does someone look if they're interested in finding out more about day trading for beginners? For me, this has been an answer I've not been able to find a solution to for the entirety of this show. We've had plenty of guests who have built their businesses in the B quadrant, and we've had several reality stars who have built a great portfolio in the I quadrant. However, we've never had an expert on whose focus is helping those who want to build wealth through paper assets. Until now.More often than not, people generally build an S quadrant business, scale it through the B quadrant, and then take their profits and buy assets in the I quadrant. However, there's no rule that says you can't start slowly in the I quadrant and then build a business helping others do the same in the B quadrant. In this session Andy and I learn how our guest Jason Brown ended up doing just that with The Brown Report and Power Trades University.Enjoy! On the show, we've asked several of ours guests a particular question when we know they've had the answer. And that question is simply this "How did you get on TV?"Interestingly, there's been a few different answers. But the one thing which was common between all of them was that they had a compelling story. The other part was that they networked into the spot. Now, I get what that means. It means that you either found someone you knew who knew the person you were trying to connect with. Or, you randomly connected with someone who could get you on. One's a little more intentional, however, both have the same result. However, what if you don't know where to start in doing that? Sure, there's courses that can teach you how to network with the right people. But wouldn't it be easier if you could just reach out to someone who could help?If you believe you're looking for that kind of person, then today's guest is someone you should connect with.Sabrina Santucci has the network and the skillset to help you on local TV and potentially help you go national. For a lot of business owners, the pandemic has cost them their livelihood. For example, Yelp! recently shared that 55% of the businesses using their platform which closed down due to the pandemic aren't coming back. What's a business team to do when you're looking at those kinds of numbers? How can you avoid having to close down? The answer, I believe, is all about being able to make a pivot. And this is something we've been discussing in great detail on the show.Unfortunately, for some business teams, pivoting might not be too obvious. Sure, curb service and delivery for some restaurants makes sense, but what if your restaurant wasn't so much a restaurant, but a bar? What if you're reliant on a market that's not doing so great right now such as realty?Today's guest, Dirk van Reenen, excels at helping teams focus on the foundations of business and how they scale their businesses in ways that they might not have noticed before. In fact, with the future looking like things will be changing faster and faster, it's important that all businesses know how to quickly pivot. So what does that look like? Today, more than ever, videos play a large part in social media marketing. If you have a goal of becoming a social influencer, there's a pretty good chance you'll need to know how to not only make but produce good quality content to attract people to be part of your audience. Here's the catch, though. Not all business owners want to be social influencers. In fact, many business owners might prefer to stay out of that particular limelight because they feel that it would take even more time to make that extra content. Time they could be spending doing what works and less experimenting with new content. So how does someone who prefers to work their craft and/or work 1 on 1 with their clients, find the time to create and edit this new content?Well, truth is, they need to bring in someone who has a proven process to attract the right type of audience. Our guest, Rohan Kale, fits the bill. Personally, I call him more of a social media marketing architect. Or, if we know better, maybe we'll take a look at our vision and mission and see if it needs to be tweaked a bit.One thing we often skip over, however, is our mindset. As we've been learning in the show recently, mindsets can be seen as the lenses we see the world in. And there's a lot of talk about going from negative mindsets to more positive alternatives. Most of the time, though, this has been a bit of nebulous concept. Especially, when we don't know where we're currently at and how we can improve from there. However, in this session, our goal is to bring that conversation down to reality a bit.Our guest, Dr. Ryan Gottfredson, has spent over five years looking at the knowledge and data on what it means to go from good to great when it comes to mindsets. And what he's found is that mindsets can actually be quantifiable. During the civil unrest of 2020, there's been a lot of talk about how to create safe neighborhoods for everyone. However, this isn't a new topic by any means. In fact, it's an issue that many cities have been dealing with for a number of decades. For example, here in Indianapolis, we're way ahead of the curve when it comes to homicides for the year. It's only June and we have had over 100 people killed. This curve has been rising year after year.Add to that the frustration people have with law enforcement and the systems in place for their accountability, and it only makes sense that there's protests. However, where many people draw the line is when those protests turn to violence. When protests turn to riots, that's where the message starts getting lost. So, if people want to make a change for the better, wouldn't it make sense that they do so in non-threatening manner? This session's guest, Commander Dale Brown of the Threat Management Center in Detroit, MI, believes that's the case. On top of this, through his experience of over 25 years, he also believes that when people know a bit about self protection, crime in neighborhoods tends to go down.In this session, Veronica and I learn why this is the case, and what society can do to erase the man made construct of race all together. If you're a peace loving individual and have wanted to have your voice heard, then perhaps Dale's message is for you.Enjoy! For many people, the main reason they don't start a business is simply because they don't want to (or feel they can't) sell. In fact, many of the most successful books in business are those that teach the reader how to sell. And interestingly, many of those books teach tactics that reinforce the reader's perspective of sales. This perspective being that sales is all about bypassing objections that a potential buyer would have. However, what I've learned in the last few years is that sales, when done right, is more about adding value or service to someone who needs a particular solution. Meaning that, if you're looking to develop a sales process, it needs to include a phase where you can ask questions from the potential buyer. It also needs to include a point where you suggest the solution based on the buyer's needs. And then, if they need help, they'll ask for it.This session's guest, Chris Spurvey, is all about that process. And, in fact, he suggests that ambiverts, who are people who aren't quite extroverts or introverts are the best equipped to do sales.Interestingly enough, most people who can't think of doing sales the "traditional" way, are, in fact, ambiverts. In this session, we learn from Chris why ambiverts like him, have this special power to be super successful at giving people what they want.If you've dreaded sales in the past because you don't want to come across as being sleezy or pushy, then this chat is one you don't want to miss.Enjoy! Greg S. Reid – Ok, Now What? Tips For Getting Ahead in Life and Business After the Pandemic (AoL 175)

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2020 51:42

As the world heads back to a post pandemic normal, more people find themselves wondering about getting ahead of the new status quo.As we move forward, once again many people are realizing (again) the future is uncertain. Just like security was a big concern after 9/11, corporate wellness is going to be a huge topic moving forward. Corporations, being the relatively static entities they are, prefer to have all their ducks in a row. The more predictable the future is, the better they look to their investors. So one would think that part of the new status quo is going to be maintaining a healthy workplace and workforce. Is a business capable of properly reacting to potential future waves of this (and other) diseases? For us creative entrepreneur types, we know that with uncertainty comes big opportunity. So that's why in the last couple of months, my business partners and I have been working on starting a wellness consulting business. If the corporations want to go digging for gold ( in wellness), then we're more than happy to help them find the tools they need.Even if you don't have the expertise to capitalize directly on the new status quo, there will be more than enough room for to indirectly capitalize on it.For example, perhaps you're an artist. Is there a way for you to use the technology everyone has become accustomed to using to get more people around your work? (Yes, virtual art shows...)As we speak with this session's guest, Greg Reid, Veronica and I learn a little bit about the mindset he's used in getting ahead himself - now and in the future. If you've not heard from Greg before, then today might be one of those days which changes the trajectory of those that follow.Enjoy! Here it is 2020, and a good part of the population scratches their head when the subject of Millennials and Gen Z comes up. With the pandemic completely changing how things are done in the working world for the foreseeable future, it would seem that these generations are going to be the ones left picking up the pieces and reassembling the economy in their own way.So what exactly does that look like? For the most part, we know what it looks like for entrepreneurs. But the usual 9 to 5 world is going to change drastically in the next 5 to 10 years. Like after 9/11, when we were all about ramping up security, are we going to now see a continued uptick in technology use specifically geared towards maintaining healthy workplaces? How will this change the workplace overall? Will things ever go back to "normal"?These are some of the questions Veronica and I ask this session's guest, Chris Tuff, author of the book The Millennial Whisperer. If you've not heard Chris before and you're into futurism, I think you'll really enjoy this chat.Enjoy! In a an usual time like we're going through right now, it's easy to be hyper responsive to everything that's going on around us. Practicing mindfulness is probably the last thing many folks are thinking about. In fact, I'd go on to say that many people are doing the opposite - they're in a constant state of panic. They're still focused on what we've been through, not where the world is going. But can you blame them? Many who were hanging on a thread from their day job have found themselves in a lot of hurt right now. Even small business owners and farmers find themselves having to do things they never thought they'd have to.What I've personally found out is this. If we can manage our stress in stressful times, then new solutions and new ways of looking at the world come more readily. We have to give ourselves room to find our own pandemic pivot. (Plus it always seems to me that survivors in zombie movies tend to see what the masses are doing, and do the opposite!)In this conversation with Kelly DiNardo, we learn about a time where she herself had to pivot earlier in her career. While it wasn't convenient at the time, it sure did prep her for future times of adversity.Enjoy! When it comes to the entrepreneurial mindset, most of the time we hear topics that the new business owner needs to know. It's great to know that there's so much support for folks new to the game. In fact, people like my unofficial mentor Pat Flynn and the crew over at Fizzle have made decent livings on helping these folks. (Which I admire because it's really hard to grow a reputation in this market segment. The market is already saturated and many folks don't or can't pay at this stage in the game.)However, there is market for entrepreneurs and business owners who have had a bit of success. This is the scaling stage - the stage that Veronica, Andy, myself, and previous cohosts of the show specialize in.And depending on how they've grown the business to this point, the way that they'll continue to grow is more than likely completely different than what got them to that level of success. In today's chat with Joe, Veronica and I are reminded that different personalities can build a business so far. With the coronavirus outbreak, working remotely is starting to become a normal trend. In fact, I'd say it's moved the timeline up by 5 years or more until we see a lot more remote workers. However, not all virtual workers are from first world countries where being able to work remotely is considered a perk. Instead, they reside in countries where they might be in the middle of long term economic crisis. They have learned how to become virtual assistants or VA's so that they can bring in money than they'd get paid in their home country. To help those folks, today's guest, John Miles, and his partners at iWorker and Optimate, have built a network of VA's around the globe. These aren't just any VA's, though. They are VA's who actually are usually more than capable to handle what us solopreneurs would throw at them. As we grow more successful, it can be easy for power to go to our heads. We can start to think we're unstoppable. This is especially true on the grand scale when we see ethical issues in business headline the news. One right now, for example, is the rehabilitation of the Boeing 737 Max line of aircraft. It has turned into an epic crisis in the last couple of years for them as they simply have not done well in addressing the issue. Nor did they really do a great job of mitigating it either. Whoever made the decision to cut corners and create the software which caused a couple flights to crash, obviously shouldn't have cut those corners.Another example was back in 2008 when Lehman Brothers had to file for bankruptcy. Out of all the things that went on that year, I still remember watching the news as the threat of that particular crisis grew more inevitable. When it finally did, the market plummeted... as well as the savings and lifestyles of many people who thought they had done things right.Today's guest, Michael Ainslie, was one of the group of people that had to make the decision to file for Chapter 11. Sure, making the decision was tough, but it was the right thing to do.Being part of that board hasn't been his only rodeo, however. In general, politics is a topic that people are really engaged in or they want to keep away from it with a 10 foot pole. Personally for me, I'm a bit of a junkie. And in fact, the shows that I tend to listen to engage in political satire. They don't take themselves too seriously.I love that because it's such a break from the norm. Because when you think of politics today, you often think of this side vs that side. One side is right while the other side is wrong. One side is Trump and on the other side you have the Pelosi lead Democrats. This wasn't always the case.Today's guest, Andrew Heaton, is someone I started listening to sometime last year in his last podcast called There's Something Off with Andrew Heaton. That particular show concluded this past summer and since then he's been busy building his own show entitled The Political Orphanage. (He also has a new show called Alienating the Audience , Sci-Fi based show, which we'll talk a bit about in the interview.)Listen in as Andy and I get a chance to find out from Andrew what his process has been as he's been building his new platform. Personal financial management is a topic that many people really don't want to touch with a ten foot pole. A lot of the time, the reason for this is that as a society, we're just not taught how to manage our own money. For those of us who are lucky to have extra to invest, we feel that we need to hire a financial advisor or investor to do the work for us.While that might be helpful, it's not a great plan to simply give up the responsibility for our own portfolio. Since the world runs on money, we all should have a good fundamental knowledge of how the game works. In this session, Veronica and I speak with Tess Wicks. For many people, starting a consulting business is something they've thought about doing at one or another. But just like most entrepreneurial endeavours, many don't get started because they don't know the way to find real success. And many times, they don't know anyone who is a "successful" consultant to learn from.In my experience, there are a few well known names out there that come to mind when you're talking about becoming a decent consultant. Today's guest is one of those names.Michael has been a consultant since the age of 19 and since then, he's been honing his craft and helping others along the way. Since 2007, he and his cousin Sam have empowered 34,000 people from over 80 countries with their company Consulting Success. To Michael and Sam, success is not about numbers or material gains. Instead, it's about being in a place where money isn't a concern anymore. It's the ability to go out to enjoy a meal or a trip with family. It's having the certainty you need – in an increasingly uncertain world – to take charge of your future. It's the freedom to live life on your own terms. If consulting is something you've thought about getting started with, I'd highly suggest getting to know Michael in this chat with Veronica and me. People get involved in non fiction writing for a number of reasons. In the thought leader space, the number one reason books are created is for their ability to be a lead generator. Many times, they'll be at the front of a sales funnel that leads to higher and higher priced products such as courses and live events. However, sometimes the book is the end message. And for me, before I got into the content production world, I always thought that was point of a book. The point was to actually increase the awareness of your readers. The book was the end... not the means to an end. But, as a good authorpreneur knows, you can have the best of both if you really care to make the effort. You can create something of value while at the same time using it as a tool to grow your business. This session's guest, Lindsay Whiting, is all about helping writers do just that. She finds joy in helping new writers write a good book while at the same time helping them navigate the publishing waters. If writing a valuable non fiction book is something you've wanted to do and your goal isn't to just be an Amazon Best Seller, then you'll get a lot out of this interview. If you've ever read the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad, you probably know that the author, Robert Kiyosaki gained his wealth in Real Estate Investing (REI). Since the release and rise of popularity of the book, there's been all kinds of methods revealed to the general public about how to make passive income. There are two passive income quadrants: Investing (I) and Business (B).When it comes to passive income, we're usually thinking of the B quadrant. For example, most of us are familiar with the thought leader approach. They create content, develop a tribe, and provide services or products to that tribe to help them achieve more. The larger the tribe, the more potential one has of making a good income.Yet others might be more familiar with drop shipping through eBay or Amazon. Pretty much the same idea, but instead of developing your own tribe, you sell to the customers on those sites. Because of that, you have to share a percentage of what you earn with the company.A hybrid of both of these is using Facebook ads to get your name out there to Facebook users so that they can convert in your sales funnel. As for the I quadrant, it tends to stay off limits to most people who are seeking passive income.Mainly because most people think that to work in that quadrant, we have to have money available to invest.Truth is, that's not necessarily the case.In fact, today's guest, Chris Prefontaine, has one of the coolest systems I've seen to help people develop wealth in the I quadrant. In this session of the AoL Podcast, Veronica and I learn how it's indeed possible to build a passive income portfolio without using money from banks or our own pocket. Back in session 55, Laila and I had the opportunity to pick the brain of Summer Edwards. Outside of Veronica (who was still running her tech company), she was the first entrepreneur I had on the show who we could label as a social entrepreneur. This type of entrepreneur is someone who not only creates a business, but that business could be called a social venture - a business that has a social mission empowering it.Since then, I've met all kinds of social entrepreneurs and they all have one thing in common. They're creating something by themselves or with others that not only affects a large amount of people in a positive way, but is sustainable.Traditionally when many nonprofits start out, they do so thinking that they'll be funded by governmental grants or strictly through donations and fundraising. However, they tend to leave one concept on the table - partnering with companies who care about their cause. In this session, we find out about a company which not only offers a great service through their membership, but has a passion in feeding people around the world. Obviously, they can't do the work themselves, so that's where a nonprofit who is already doing that comes into play. It's a win-win for both organizations. So join me as I speak with one of the founders of LVRG, Cam Martinez, and learn more about his journey as a young entrepreneur and where this great idea came from.Enjoy! If you've been following the show for awhile, you're probably aware that I'm a big fan of Fizzle. Personally, I think they're one of the best resources I've seen out there for the lifestyle entrepreneur. Why?Well, there's a couple of reasons for that. For one, their library of courses available to their members are geared for those who need an Entrepreneurship 101 or 201 course. They cover all the fundamentals. But that's not all that's there. In fact, the creators joke with the idea that people come for the courses, but stay for the community.Which is so true. In fact, I'm still interacting with several people I met on there 4 years ago. Including Veronica. In today's interview with co-founder of Fizzle, Corbett Barr, Veronica and I talk to Corbett about the founding of Fizzle and what he thinks about the online entrepreneurial space 10 years after he started his first blog Think Traffic. It's my hope that you get a bit of an understanding of why Veronica and I both believe Fizzle is such a great resource.Enjoy! SPECIFICALLY, YOU'LL FIND OUT MORE ABOUT: How did Corbett originally get started in the tech startup world? 9:11What was his initial plan in starting Think Traffic? 17:29How have things changed online since the start of Fizzle? 22:24Where did the idea for Fizzle come from? 28:51What kind of advice does Corbett have for those who want to get off the fence and develop the business they truly want? 36:23What's the future for Fizzle and Palapa look like? 41:37Who are three influences that have helped him get to where he's at today? 47:20Is there something he's excited about that's going to affect entrepreneurship in the future? 49:06What topic should more people be talking about yet hardly anyone is? 50:54What is something Corbett believed as a 35 year old that he's changed his mind on? 52:41What does it mean to live a life of abundance? 54:53 ITEMS and PEOPLE MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Corbett Online: Fizzle, Personal Website, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, YouTubeCohost: Veronica KirinPast interviews with Fizzle Alums - Barrett Brooks and Steph CrowderSan Miguel de AllendeBlog World ExpoWorld Domination SummitCaleb WojcikPalapaThe Lean Startup - Eric RiesRework, Getting Real - Jason Fried and David Heinemeier-Hansson (DHH)Evergoods Civic Transit Bag 40L Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer.
